Is the Rock World Ready for the Return of Limp Bizkit?

Back in 2001, Limp Bizkit had sold 14 million records and frequently clogged New York’s Times Square with their appearances on MTV’s Total Request Live. But by the time they put out 2005’s The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1), the band (without guitarist Wes Borland) was releasing albums without advertising pushes and SoundScanning 37,000 in the first week.

In a joint statement released last Thursday, Fred Durst and Borland announced they were ready to get Limp Bizkit back together. But the question remains: Are we ready for Limp Bizkit? It’s no industry secret that the landscape has changed in the eight years since this lineup was actively touring and releasing records. Heavy music comes with eyeliner instead of fitted caps, rap-rock bands like Linkin Park have traded beats for ballads, and Fred Durst is best remembered for his macho posturing and public tantrums instead of a lasting music legacy. So will a reanimated Limp Bizkit work in the year 2009?

“It depends if the statute of limitations is up on Limp Bizkit being the most hated band ever,” says Tom Beaujour, editor in chief of metal magazine Revolver, who put Durst on the cover in 2000. “Like, is it acceptable to like them? It’s okay for people to like Poison and Warrant again. Bret Michaels is a TV star. Is it okay to like Limp Bizkit again? I don’t know. Hopefully for them it is.”

What’s certain is that rock radio isn’t playing the Bizkit as much as the band’s contemporaries. Rock stations like Q101 in Chicago and New York’s 101.9RXP fill their playlists with ’90s brooders like Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots and Bizkit cohorts like Linkin Park, Staind and Puddle Of Mudd. But rarely do they dive into “Nookie.”

“We played all Limp Bizkit,” says Danni, assistant program director and music director for New York active rock station 92.3 KRock. “We had huge ratings. It was all about Limp Bizkit. And then there was sort of a shift and people stopped caring and stopped wanting to hear about the angry side of things. Nowadays, with people losing their jobs right and left, I feel like it’s more of a banding together. Even the stuff from the ’90s, like some of the Pearl Jam stuff, that angst-ridden stuff, just doesn’t really work as much… I think there’s more of a positive spin on things with the new president and people trying to be positive about the economy.”

“It’s possible that aggression and escapism are just what the public needs right now,” counters Beaujour, who notes that rap-rock is bubbling up again in “screamo-crunk” bands like Hollywood Undead and brokeNCYDE. “Having said that, barely anyone making money in the music business right now is doing it selling stuff to 15 year olds. Generally, 14 year olds do not look at 40 year olds and think they’re cool. If the 30 year olds get on board, they’re set. Hey, Aerosmith did it.”

Danni also sees hope in the older demographic, mainly the people who remember them the first time around: “I liken them to Creed in a way because people want to hate them, but they don’t. They don’t really hate them. Everybody owns those albums, everybody loves ‘Nookie.’ If they go out and tour, as long as their ticket prices are reasonable, I think they’ll be fully welcomed back.”

Is the Rock World Ready for the Return of Limp Bizkit?

In a word.. NO!

Joe | 2/18/2009, 4:24 pm EST

BWA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! On Celebrity Rehab, sure.

Kepp | 2/18/2009, 4:31 pm EST

Say it ain’t so Wes. Limp Bizkit is awful and you said you would not be joining them again. Please just stick to Black Light Burns. They’re light years better.

could be worse | 2/18/2009, 4:33 pm EST

people actually paid to see New Kids on the Block last year. There will be room for Limp Bizkit. Probably not on the radio, but they will do solid in clubs. Even Vanilla Ice does OK in clubs.

Tom | 2/18/2009, 4:33 pm EST

oh I guess it would be nice if they never came back, and stayed dormant…forever.

xxplosive0420 | 2/18/2009, 4:45 pm EST

i for one am waiting for the new limp bizkit album. i’m sick of the mellow rock. indie rock sucks. sucks. it’s too soft and should not be considered rock. indie rock sucks equally with emo. emo should just die. limp bizkit’s live shows are sick. let the riots begin!!

Ed | 2/18/2009, 4:46 pm EST

WHY ARE WE REGRESSING? Music should be a progression into new forays, not crying over the failures of the past!

Limp Bizkit represented the worst of the worst back then. Nu-metal then is what emo is now. Awful bands that no one will want to listen in 3 years. The world needs a Limp Bizkit reunion like it needs WW3

surforia | 2/18/2009, 4:52 pm EST

3 key flaws with this article:

1. It’s NOT okay to like Poison, unless you’re a thirty-something washed-up groupie.

2. It’s NOT okay to like Creed.

3. It’s NOT okay to like Limp Bizkit.

Other than that, I warmly welcome back Fred Durst to music – for the pure unintentional comedy factor. What could be better than watching Fred Durst’s career implode, AGAIN?!!! This is going to be like a modern day Spinal Tap. I’m psyched!!!

Michelle Microgram | 2/18/2009, 4:55 pm EST

buncha tools, man. and hell no. he’s just as bad as vanilla ice.

Kevin the Robot | 2/18/2009, 5:26 pm EST

I promise you 5 years from now we’ll have Fred Durst’s Rock of Love. I just hope my TV doesn’t get Herpes.

Swingline | 2/18/2009, 6:29 pm EST

When the hell did the “rock world” get standards?

Erich | 2/18/2009, 6:40 pm EST

I agree with the article. There is room for some rap rock agression from the people who experienced it the first time. I won’t buy it, but I can see it happening and accidentally being big. New Kids sold out a lot of damn shows to people who can now afford to spend the money they couldn’t in high school and college.

rockfan | 2/18/2009, 6:56 pm EST

I can’t take these idiotic people that just like to hate on bands for no good reason (or just because other people hate them). NO!!! Limp Bizkit does not suck, and I listen to Heavy metal and 80’s rock, and I really like Limp Bizkit too. People these days just don’t have a mind of their own. Can’t wait for the new album!!!!!

DeadHorse | 2/18/2009, 8:41 pm EST

No, it really is not time for Limp Bizkit. We had enough of Durst in the late ’90s and early ’00s to leave us nauseated for a lifetime. Go away and take Britney with you.

killtheindustry | 2/18/2009, 9:01 pm EST

Cool… but just get rid of that Durst tool and let Vanilla Ice sing… he has way more talent than fat Fred.

Chicago says F' You durst | 2/18/2009, 9:25 pm EST

After the BS he pulled at Summer Sanitarium in 2003, he better not show up in town. I hope Q101 remebers that crap and ignores whatever crap they put out. The only band I would like to see reunite less then LB is Creed.

Nuggs | 2/18/2009, 9:28 pm EST

I’m in my late 20s. Limps first album, 3 dollar bill yall came out when I was in high school. They were cool back then. Not sure how well this will work, today. Wes is an amazing guitar player. Very under-rated. He should stick with Black Light Burns. Maybe he’s just doing this for the money, cause of the economy, and BLB isnt making much, because no one knows about them… but they should. Black Light Burns is awesome

Tog | 2/18/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Are you kidding?? Limp Bizshit was the worst thing to happen in the 90’s, and we’re all better off that they dropped of the face of the planet. Durst’s ‘rapping’ was pathetic and the rest of the band were idiots to follow along with him as long as they did.

LB don’t even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as bands like Pearl Jam and Aerosmith, who are both legends of their respective times, like them or not. Limp Bizkit isn’t anything more than a footnote in the great book of bad ideas.

Dude Man | 2/18/2009, 9:58 pm EST

I’m not sure about Bizkit, but I do think not people can really hate Creed. I mean just because Scott had more problems than Amy Winehouse does not mean that you can take away from the fact that they had some good songs. Where I live Creed still get radio play and are considered a good band.

Jungleland2 | 2/18/2009, 10:09 pm EST

I’d take Poison over Limp Bizkit. NuRock mostly sucks and these guys are a joke

Jeff | 2/18/2009, 10:09 pm EST

I’m not saying Fred Durst is a good singer and I’m certainly not saying he’s anything short of the biggest douche in the universe, but I’ve never seen anyone other than Zack de la Rocha or Axl Rose work up a crowd the way Fred does.

I’ve seen him take a stadium full of people booing and throwing shit at him when he comes out and make them rock out like crazy by the time he leaves.

Also, Limp Bizkit have a great jazz-influenced drummer in John Otto, a fantastic bass player in Sam Rivers, and a great/innovative/charismatic guitarist in Wes Borland.

Like them or not, they were everything that constitutes a great band.

Hed Burst | 2/19/2009, 12:34 am EST

“people want to hate them, but they don’t. They don’t really hate them. Everybody owns those albums, everybody loves ‘Nookie.’”

WTF!?!? Someone actually made that comment?

Dan | 2/19/2009, 1:07 am EST

I love the part in the article where it basically says how bands like Linkin Park have demoted themselves to writing whimpy top 40 ballads. You people trash Limp Bizkit yet praise Linkin Park’s new sappy direction? We live in a music age now cluttered by cookie-cutter power ballads from Nickelback, Hinder, Saving Abel, etc. And not to mention lame pop-punk/emo stuff like My Chemical Romance, All-American Rejects and Fall Out Boy. Mainstream Rock has gotten a lot worse since Limp Bizkit’s last album in 2003. Let’s face it.

I have to wonder if the majority of you people would actually prefer Fall Out Boy over Limp Bizkit. Keep in mind, FOB is just as mainstream as LB was from 1999-2001. Just keep that in mind and get back to me. The Nu-Metal craze really wasn’t as bad as the stuff we hear now. In the end, it’s all the same post-grunge clutter.

Kbilly | 2/19/2009, 2:11 am EST

Umm playing Limp Bizkit instead of Pearl Jam on the radio….really? REALLY?

The Dude | 2/19/2009, 2:13 am EST

Dan to answer you’re question I’d rather have NO fall out boy or limp bizkit, but unfortunately the world sucks

Rohan Of Rock | 2/19/2009, 6:17 am EST

WOOOOOOOOT LIMP BIZKIT FUCK YEA THIS IS AWSOME NO MORE PUSSY MUSIC JUST PLAIN OLD ROCK! THIS IS BETTA THEN BLINK 182 GETTING BACK TOGETHER!

Fuck limp bizkit who the hell likes them they are the most stupidest band ever why would they come back the worlds better without them they dont like the music we listen to well alot of people like it they are just probly shitty cuz nobody liked them.haters united

Aussie Legend | 2/19/2009, 7:12 am EST

I think its sad how people will follow with what they are told. If this article read ” Limp Bizkit is making a comeback to break up todays same old boring bullshit music” people would be like “f__ck yeah can’t wait”. But because its a “Are we really ready” article people are in doubt. Noone has a mind of their own anymore, what ever the media says, lets just agree and follow them. BOORRRRIINNNNGGG!!!!!!! If they do tour i’m flying over to a show for sure.

Numetal Emily | 2/19/2009, 8:19 am EST

fuck yeah. i love limp bizkit. 3 dollar bill yall and significant other are fucking excellent. i love heavy and industrial metal as well but there is not enough rap metal atm too much soft emo/scene BULLSHIT. iam very happy that the whole original members are in it too i hope wes gets his wacky-self out again. fred is like marmite you either love him or hate him and i love marmite haha

Me | 2/19/2009, 9:06 am EST

Ok, when they came out when I was 12 or whatever, they were really cool. I loved Faith and Nookie. But when Fred Durst started, ya know, being himself, I stopped listening to him (along with Bizkit). I’m going to assume they’re doing the same kind of music but generally, people will listen. Mostly out of nostalgia for their hate-ridden youth but maybe it’ll be a bit better. And btw, I like FOB. They’re funny. But i’ll give you My Chem. Romance needs to seriously go away. And no one should ever mention Creed again – if for no other reason than Stapp did an interview where he said they’re not a christian band… THEY’RE CALLED CREED AND MENTION GOD IN EVERY SONG… OF COURSE THEIR CHRISTIAN. Ok, done ranting now

The biggest d-bags....... | 2/19/2009, 10:33 am EST

music has ever seen…..seriously they were cool for a 2 seconds. I wanna see them tour with Kriss Kross.

GNRBUCKEYE | 2/19/2009, 10:52 am EST

I think the headline of this article should read “Limp Bizkit reuniting. Does anyone really give a shit?” The answer is no.

the porksword | 2/19/2009, 12:05 pm EST

I just hope they bring back the Bizketts (or however you spell that)!

red | 2/19/2009, 12:08 pm EST

This makes me ache even more for U2’s album to be released.

thedetoxg | 2/19/2009, 12:44 pm EST

limp bizkit came out and it was cool to like them in 1999 because they had that element of rock and rap that took it to the next level. the actual band not (fred durst)is not bad. and to see them come back and maybe do new shit that may actually be respectable

rockballs | 2/19/2009, 2:12 pm EST

i’m as ready for limp bisquit to make a comeback as i’m ready for the plague to make a comeback.
don’t we have enough shit in the music biz without having to add this pile of poop!

fred dork | 2/19/2009, 2:16 pm EST

this is one of those bands were the guitarest is cool but the band hez in sux!! like tom morello, jeff loomis (nevermore), or van halen. all those guitaest have talent but there bands blow huge nuts. wes, as ur buddy i strongly advise that u run the hills now…

Steel Dragon | 2/19/2009, 2:22 pm EST

It is funny how everyone loves to bash these bands (Limp, Creed, etc), yet let me say this…. They put out albums, people bought them, people paid to see them live, and bought their merchandise. Is their music for everyone? No. But ask yourself this question…

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE??

Thanks for listening

Mark Tulsa | 2/19/2009, 4:01 pm EST

If Scott Weiland produces the next Limp disc, then Durst might have a chance at reclaiming success. Unlikely though.

Radio Zero | 2/19/2009, 4:08 pm EST

BTW – it’s spelled Biscuit.

Thanks.

Brain E-No | 2/19/2009, 4:16 pm EST

Forget Limp Bizquick.

Listen to Faith No More’s ‘Angel Dust’ instead. Same musical vein but INFINITELY better.

Anonymous | 2/19/2009, 4:30 pm EST

I was 14/15 during the Limp heyday. Yeah, I owned Significant Other, I chalk it up to being young and stupid. The rhythm section of Rivers and Otto is decent, and Borland ain’t too bad either. But Fred Durst? biggest d-bag on the planet. Can’t rap, sing, or do anything a competent frontman does.

That said, at least they aren’t wuss rock like FOB or ballady sh!t rock like Hinder, Nickelback, Saving Abel, etc.

Metal Master | 2/19/2009, 4:37 pm EST

Its hard to say, I think today is interested in such a wide variety of music that why cant Limp Bizkit have some good moments again… Man that brings me back to seeing how crazy they got the crowd at Woodstock, I remember the Chaos that they got that crowd to do. Man if they had such a huge fan base back then I don’t think anyone can say it can’t happen again.

Joe B | 2/19/2009, 4:45 pm EST

Limp Bizkit created a RIOT at woodstock 99. Fred Durst said to “BURN THIS M’FER DOWN” and they did. They rocked out when they opened for Metallica at summer sanitarium. They have high energy in concert unlike other bands. And i do believe there is room for limp bizkit. SiriusXM plays alot of music from all genres, so i’m sure they will at least get some air time on there.

shemp | 2/19/2009, 5:23 pm EST

You all love Limp Bizkit. Admit it. They’re eight million times better than half the shit Rollingstone is sucking off now. Fall Out Boy? Jonas Brothers? Please. I’d rather listen to a little bit of misplaced aggression than some meta-ironic pop punk or Disney kids whose voices are just beginning to crack.

Bunny | 2/19/2009, 6:43 pm EST

No. Not every band needs to try and make a comeback.

who cares | 2/19/2009, 7:10 pm EST

To Radio Zero’s post…..they spell it Bizkit not biscuit. Thought maybe you were kidding but not so sure.

Drewdog21 | 2/19/2009, 8:29 pm EST

Yes, Limp Bizkit is hella better than the Anus (Jonas) Brothers, Nickelback, Fall Out Boy and any other pseudo-rock bands out there.
But they’ll never be as good as Pearl Jam or Foo Fighters or Kings of Leon (pre-Only By The Night, of course!).
Limp was a novelty act during the novelty era of rap-rock. They blew their load then–well–went limp! HA HA!!

raisedlefteyebrow | 2/20/2009, 10:43 am EST

tim | 2/20/2009, 12:54 pm EST

Just the fact that there is this much responce to this blog shows you who really loves Limp Bizkit. If you didn’t care why are you waisting your time with a comment. We all had their albums because they rocked, you looked at this blog and chose to comment to either say they were cool or get a reaction. Well bravo! You now have a reaction. Now go throw your significat other album in and shut up. They didn’t sell millions of albums to ghosts.i say “bring it on”

Jesus Christ | 2/20/2009, 6:26 pm EST

What the f – i thought Borland was just quoted joining Manson and talking shit about Limp Bizkit; now he’s rejoining them? This is as lame as the whole Blink 182 regroup. Artists must be feeling the economy crunch too and getting desperate. f it. f u. ftw. – Jesus

anonymous | 2/20/2009, 11:38 pm EST

ahh, the sweet sight of ignorance. music should go into a progression not a regression, and if limp bizkit can improve their sound it is a progression. all because they come back does not mean they will put out the same shit. there has been many bands that re-unit and change their sound to fit the music world. i actually cant wait to hear what they can do.

harry | 2/21/2009, 12:29 am EST

its about to be 2001 all over again

Dan (again) | 2/21/2009, 12:47 am EST

I like what Mark Tulsa said a few posts below about Scott Weiland….

Scott Weiland did two great guest appearances on Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish. The guy is one of the best rock frontmen of the past 20 years along with Chris Cornell.

But Weiland shouldn’t waste his time with LB and instead focus on recording the new Stone Temple Pilots album which is due out later this year. Thank God for STP! One of the best bands ever. I’m glad they’re back!

fab | 2/21/2009, 5:07 am EST

everyone saying how much they hate limp are tryhards who think there cool just because critics and bands hate them. I like strong lyrics good beat and flow and if its got attitude its a bonus limp bizkit are the shit can not wait for the return of limp bizkit

Lol, what do you think Limp Dipshit is? Indie? Christ, is everyone posting trying to relive their late 90s middle school days? This music is trash. Faith No More started the whole rap-rock trend and that was as good as it got. Everyone else is a cheap imitation. Its 2009 and so far this decade has sucked balls musically except for the indie rock explosion and older groups like Radiohead and Sonic Youth putting out records. Just when I thought music couldn’t get any worse, its starting to.

metal rules | 2/21/2009, 6:43 pm EST

raisedlefteyebrow | 2/22/2009, 12:13 am EST

“Like them or not, they were everything that constitutes a great band.”

Yep. Everything except talent.

I DO have a mind of my own and I say limp bizkit sucks. balls. Just like emo, Nickleback, Fall Out Boy, Britney, and everything that gets radio airplay today.

Indie rock is the best thing out there today. That is all.

themanstrikesagain | 2/22/2009, 12:26 am EST

All u people hating on here are missing a key point. Limp Bizkit has been and remains a very, very popular band on the other side of the world, where they have never toured before and the culture is very, very different then it is here. It is a culture that exists completely outside the realm of “nu metal”, “late 90’s”, “emo” or any of these other things that are so much a part of the American pop culture mentality. Over in Europe, Argentina, and The U.K it’s really alot more about the music on the music’s terms. And alot more people over there are and have been feeling Limp Bizkit songs long after they faded out over here. You may notice that the first 30 or 40 dates scheduled are all in that part of the world.

It became really cool to hate on limp Bizkit and really uncool to like them but there was a reason that they were so popular in the first place and that is because they wrote good songs, not just one, two, or three but more like fifteen to twenty at least.

Good music is good music and it survives and outlasts all changes in the pop culture landscape. Limp Bizkit with Wes Borland was and will always be a good band that know how to play and write really good, original songs. Thats what made them famous to begin with.

I’m open to debates on this

victorchaz | 2/22/2009, 4:53 am EST

i dont say lb is a hopeless band .but sumtimes it really sucks.. i feel like sayin to them “eat u alive” ha ha !!!

Anonymous | 2/22/2009, 3:07 pm EST

“themanstrikesagain | 2/22/2009, 12:26 am EST

All u people hating on here are missing a key point. Limp Bizkit has been and remains a very, very popular band on the other side of the world” Um…no…nobody over here likes them at all. Rap-rock/metal has died in the same degree as it has over in the US.
“Over in Europe, Argentina, and The U.K it’s really alot more about the music on the music’s terms. And alot more people over there are and have been feeling Limp Bizkit songs long after they faded out over here.” True about the music, which is why people now realize that LB sucks balls. There will be a very low turnout at the concerts. And fucking travel before you make generalizations.

FBM | 2/22/2009, 7:28 pm EST

Well, I will say even after the times have changed, so has my music collection, but my albums of LB are still there. Sure I may not play there stuff like I repeatedly did a few years ago, but just the other day, I did begin to wonder, and now, this. I think it is great to hear that they are planning on getting the original band back together. Will Wes bring back the black lenses again, and will Fred still don the Red Hat? I’m curious to see, but more concerned on what the music will be like. Afterall, the new generation of music that is on the radio are by bands who are being listen to kids that grew up watching a purple dinosaur and are now the reason bands on radio today are being listened to. But, then again, I believe the music we listen to today is far more disposable than Limp Bizkit. I kept my albums, no need to download there…

Its funny how many people actually cared to comment to this! The truth is be prepared to rock out again! Who else creates beats and rocks out on the mic like limp bizkit! All the haters are goin to feel like dumb asses when lb comes out with a 1# album! Its been way too long!

xxplosive420 | 2/24/2009, 2:45 pm EST

finally limp bizkit, the orginal lineup is back. wes borland coming back to lb is making 09′ look sick. it’s about time too, emo and indie rocks sucks. really sucks.

Oh right they realized they suck and broke up again! They will never be a successful band again.

for all you haters-screw you. I seen them in Denver for their anger management tour and they were awesome. I am 39 and been to a lot of concerts and they rocked. I am pumped about them getting back together and I hope they go back to Denver because I will for sure be there. Love you guys.

I for one have waited for this bad to reunite forver, they rocked back in the 90’s and i believe they will bring mainstream music down to their knees with their come back album, and to all you haters I got 3 words for you, Go Fuck Yourself.
