Trent Reznor Plots Tour With Jane’s Addiction Before Nine Inch Nails “Disappear For a While”

The rumors are true: Trent Reznor will produce the new Jane’s Addiction album, and take Perry Farrell’s band on tour when Nine Inch Nails hit the road this summer for a U.S. tour. In a long post on the NIN.com Website, Reznor writes that early in Nine Inch Nails’ career, he toured with Jane’s Addiction and the experience was “truly the best times I’ve had.” Reznor goes on to reveal how a friend told him that Jane’s recent L.A. club performances were “unbelievable,” which inspired him to contact the band and discuss the possibility of collaborating.

“Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we’re in the studio experimenting,” Reznor writes. “We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record lots of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become friends, we laugh again and we do some great things.”

While NIN fans are likely excited about the Jane’s Addiction news, it’s the second sentence of the third paragraph of Reznor’s post that most likely concerns the diehards: “I’ve been thinking for some time now it’s time to make NIN disappear for a while.” Reznor has been uncharacteristically prolific in recent years, releasing With Teeth, Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV and The Slip in a four year span; by contrast, there was a six-year hiatus following 1999’s The Fragile. Fans have a legitimate reason for concern: should Reznor take another lengthy break from NIN, the project might not return until 2015.

With this year marking the 20th anniversary of NIN’s seminal Pretty Hate Machine, and following NIN’s production-heavy Lights In The Sky tour, Reznor also revealed that the Jane’s-and-NIN jaunt will be “much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted.” According to Reznor’s Twitter, the rocker was nervous about testing out the new concert format prior to last night’s show in Auckland, New Zealand, but in the end Reznor writes, “Very strange show for us to play. Completely different and exciting. Nothing was familiar to us. Mission accomplished!”

The NIN U.S. tour dates are expected soon, and we’d be shocked if a huge festival or two weren’t part of the itinerary. NIN are already booked for Bonnaroo and this morning both bands were announced for the Memorial Day Weekend Sasquatch! Festival in Washington’s Gorge. Jane’s Addiction at Perry Farrell’s own Lollapalooza, perhaps?

If NIN is gonna take a break for a while, there is no better way to go out than with a tour alongside Jane’s Addiction.

Jay | 2/17/2009, 11:24 am EST

That would be A Fuckin AWESOME TOUR!!

BYE TRENT | 2/17/2009, 11:41 am EST

well if they chose to call it quits its all good. they’ve had great success, wrote killer music thru out the years and will definatly go down as one of the most unique bands ever. trent is a gifted musician. i wish i could write songs as good as his.

Pslightly Psycho | 2/17/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Trent Reznor is the man. I kneel at his altar. His music is my life.
I wish him well, and I pray that i am able to see him this summer on what could be his last shows with NIN. Trent truly brought me closer to God.

Hell, if NIN toured with Ashlee Simpson I’d go.

Pinoyrockz | 2/17/2009, 1:42 pm EST

We all need to take a break sometimes

Pinoyrockz | 2/17/2009, 1:43 pm EST

I like his music though

NIN | 2/17/2009, 1:53 pm EST

was cool for about 10 seconds. Jane’s Addiction 5 seconds. What is the point here?

V | 2/17/2009, 2:05 pm EST

Please have The Mars Volta on this tour. It would be incredible.

Axl Rose | 2/17/2009, 2:12 pm EST

Take a break T Rizzle…..I need my guitarist back:)

Brent | 2/17/2009, 3:37 pm EST

I’m afraid I’m going to have to disagree with all the skeptics here. Trent Reznor is a good man who writes wonderful music. I have too many favorite songs from him to name.I am incredibly sad that he is leaving us for even a brief period of time. But one might find this heartbreak bearable if they think about how when he DOES come back he’ll have plenty of material.

Anonymous | 2/17/2009, 4:27 pm EST

we love you, trent.
don’t take too long coming back to surface.

HeyNow | 2/17/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Gosh, I don’t know how to feel about this. Another Jane’s record could be good with Trent at the helm. Trent would be a great producer, and should maybe take a break from instrumental rock records for a bit. The one thing I hate about Jane’s is, they get back together, they break up, they get back together. Its juust getting so old. No Jane’s reunion will last passed this NIN tour, quaranteed.

And what about an european tour ?

martin | 2/17/2009, 5:04 pm EST

i hope they play rothbury this year alongside bonnarroo

FAkers | 2/17/2009, 5:19 pm EST

I remember the first time I heard NIN while partying as a teenager. 20 years is a long time. I can only imagine the grind of his own process concidering what he describes above with JA. Kick in the on stage and back stage stuff while touring… Hell I need a nap just thinking about it. zzzz zzz

arch stanton | 2/17/2009, 6:21 pm EST

I hope no American artist plays Rothb ury or any European festival. Just because there are no bands worth a shit over there in the UK, they expect us to provide that entertainment. Maybe Jay Z will head back over and have Oasis whine some more. Better yethave em stick with the Verve, Duffy, Winehouse, Oasis, Kooks. There i just solved thier problem. NIN in America only.

buddy | 2/18/2009, 6:56 am EST

GREATNESS ISN’T LIMITED TO THE NAME OF A BAND OR EVEN THE MUSIC THEY MAKE HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY TRENT REZNOR SOMEHOW

MANGO | 2/18/2009, 12:39 pm EST

HELL PSLIGHTLY PSYCHO…if Ashlee Simpson toured with NIN, she should headline….NIN = another overrated bunch of noisemakers!!!!!

BK | 2/18/2009, 1:12 pm EST

Trent Recognises greatness. I am excited to hear the New Jane’s Addiction with Reznor at the helm. I am glad JA did not do the trendy thing – getting Rick Ruben to produce – and have selected Trent for the Job. This record will be good in a world of crappy music. I cant wait!

PJs of Alternative Rock | 2/18/2009, 1:22 pm EST

They should also take along Chris Cornell and the new Soundgarden, much better guitar leads and the same crunching metal guitar hooks from the Black Hole Sun collection. Like Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails and Jane’s Addiction both seized the planet on behalf of Alternative Rock with their big hits, we hope they don’t overdo it with too many stadium tours, we’re in San Francisco and would much rather see a combination like Trent and Jane’s Addiction at The Fillmore for 20 shows. Concerts in big venues amount to an ant performance, with your favorite music ants pretending they see their fan ants from the stage all the way to the rafters by way of TV big screen monitors, really takes away the primal energy of a concert and reduces it to a wine tasting event or seminar. Much better with open floors and smaller venues, just park there and add shows until you’ve attracted the same 60,000 that would have piled into a stadium, 2,000 spread out over 30 shows at the same small venue attracts the same 60,000.

The Downmard Spiral is possibly the worst album I have ever heard.

Peter S. | 2/18/2009, 7:44 pm EST

The Downward Spiral is possibly the worst album I have ever heard. JA is a pretty good band.

Where's Dave? | 2/18/2009, 8:34 pm EST

I was exctited to hear back at the NME awards that the original lineup had reuinited and performed. I rocked out to the footage of their La Cita and El Cid Shows. When i heard they were recording a new album, i was in heaven. Jane’s Addiction is the best band of all time. I’ve been a fan for years. I lost some of the excitement when i heard trent reznor would produce the album because i don’t want to hear an industrial version of Jane’s. I asked myself, hey, WHere’s Dave Jerden-the guy who produced the first two albums with PErry? That would have thrilled me. However, i learned Trent has respected the band for years and had always wanted to work with them which leads me to believe that he will respect the legacy and take it to the next level. I hope he doesn’t ruin this spectacular reunion and the possibility of how great the record could and should turn out.
I’m hoping for the best. but hell, i’m a Jane’s fan so ill buy it anyway. I just hope the new album turns into a modern day classic like “nothing’s shocking” and “ritual de Lo Habitual”. Rock On Jane’s Addiction!!!

Arch Stanton, you’re a prick! No bands worth shit in the UK eh? Expect American artists to provide? You really should do your research before your narrow-minded crap is spewed out of your mouth!!! I think you’ll find Trent would have something to say about that, given that all his main influences were British New Romantics and punk bands! The UK gave America all it’s influences – Zeppelin, Floyd, Bowie (Another of Trent’s favourites), Pistols, Beatles, Stones, Maiden, etc etc… The only difference is, I’m not so ignorant, I recognise that there are also great American bands too, but it’s ridiculous to completely dismiss UK bands – even now, there are some great UK bands that are equally, if not more musically competant than most big American bands! Oceansize, Elbow, Radiohead, etc etc… just most of the great UK bands are so well known – and of course, in your ignorance, that must mean they are no good: Less popularity = less talent I suppose? What an idiot!

So why should British music fans not be treated to the bands that they helped make successful in the first place! You make no sense!

Dick.

chasenine | 4/24/2009, 4:02 am EST

good hell. everyone who posts in forums like this are so crazy. so biased so chaotic and thoughtless. very interesting though. i mostly disagree with everyone. trent and NIN is the best thing that has happened in years and ja will only expand and explode that already incredible world. can’t wait to see you guys on tour.

Ryan | 6/6/2009, 6:32 am EST

Wow, that Arch Stanton guy really isn’t helping Americans against the view of “all Americans are ignorant and dumb”. Dickhead.

corrine | 6/26/2009, 9:39 am EST
