Taylor Swift: The Story Behind Rolling Stone’s Cover Story

When Rolling Stone’s Vanessa Grigoriadis hung out with Taylor Swift for our new cover story (on newsstands tomorrow), she found in some ways the 19-year-old superstar is the emotional teen Swift sings about in her songs — giddy over her RS cover, passionate about junk food — and in others a savvy music-biz insider wise beyond her years. “She has a say in everything,” Grigoriadis says of the country crossover’s attention to details like where the pit should be located on her upcoming headlining tour — and who should be in it.

Grigoriadis followed Swift from the set of CSI to Faith Hill’s Los Angeles mansion to press junkets in New York and finally to Swift’s Nashville home for the story. “It’s always best to interview people on their home turf. You get to really see who they are and all aspects of their personality,” Grigordiadis says. Still, at first she found it “insanely hard” to interview Swift, as the country singer was guarded and conscious of her responses, reluctant to indulge too much about former flames, especially her ex, Joe Jonas.

But before long Swift opened up, revealing that behind her glamorous exterior lays a low-key teen. “She really is like a tomboy,” Grigoriadis says. “I asked her if she likes to get manicures and she was like ‘No, I don’t do that.’ She doesn’t go get massages, she eats crappy food,” Grigoriadis adds. “She was like, ‘Yeah, I totally am a tomboy. If I had been better at sports, I would have just been a tomboy. But I wasn’t, so I got into singing.’ ”

While pop queens like Britney Spears hid behind facades of innocence while powering up the charts, Grigoriadis believes Swift really is the “good girl” she appears to be. “For whatever reason she’s never felt a need to rebel from those values and that’s cool. I think she’s really focused on making her music and being, and she’s so involved in the songwriting and the technical aspects of it and just accessing her feelings like that,” Grigoriadis says. “She really is that girl in the tiny little bedroom at home writing songs about the things she hopes and dreams and feels.”

And though Swift is currently the queen of country pop, Grigoriadis predicts her music may change as Taylor has more life experiences and musical interactions. “Her brother introduced her to Jack White,” she points out. “I think because she’s not a manufactured product she could potentially show a broodier side on her next album,” Grigoriadis said. “You never know, I think she’s a true artist. I think you can count on her doing something different.”

So how does Swift feel about being on the cover of Rolling Stone? “She’s so excited. She said she cried. She talked about how she never went in saying that she’ll be on the cover of Rolling Stone,” Grigoriadis says. “Taylor said, ‘I would always have a dream that’s attainable and then as I’ve achieved more I would set different goals, I’m totally freaking out because all these things are happening like being on SNL and being on the cover of Rolling Stone.’ Just like all these things in her mind she’d considered the ultimate thing to happen is happening. So she said she was ‘totally freaking out.’ ”

Rolling Stone will have much more from our Taylor Swift feature over the coming days, from photos to video and more, so stay tuned to Rock Daily.

Talentless bitch and pure crap

rachael | 2/18/2009, 3:05 am EST

Pinoyrockz – clearly you are talentless, jealous, and try to bring others down to make yourself feel good. pathetic.

DGG | 2/18/2009, 3:23 am EST

OMG, this seems like it’s going to be, like, a really deep article!

I can empathize so much already with her, because she doesn’t get manicures and massages, and guess what, I don’t either!!

I, too, am “totally freaking out!”

Seth | 2/18/2009, 3:32 am EST

Taylor Swift? Really? If I wanted to pick the brain of an 18 year old blonde I’d read the fashion column of my local high school paper.

annalise;) | 2/18/2009, 4:03 am EST

she is so coool and first thing tomorrow morning i will be going down to the store and buying the magazine

SamF | 2/18/2009, 4:27 am EST

I think she is great in every way and I can’t wait to read more about her.
The people buying her records prove that she is not crap even if you kids
feel that way :)

Anonymous | 2/18/2009, 5:19 am EST

yesssssssss taylor finally! :D

Rocco | 2/18/2009, 5:55 am EST

I just don’t get all the hating. She’s a good kid, with tons of talent and drive. Oh, and last I checked, she sold out her LA show in like 2 minutes. So somebody must like her.

LRQ | 2/18/2009, 6:04 am EST

No line on the horizon in less than two weeks and taylor swift is on the cover?????

Brian | 2/18/2009, 7:27 am EST

First off, Pinoyrockz, Shut Up. I don’t care if one hates someones music, but come on, if all you have to contribute is name calling than just crawl back into the cave from which you came. Moving on, much as the indie music snob in me would love to hate on Ms. Swifts music, I can’t. The girl is totally unafraid of a hook and understands this particular point in music and history better than anyone else out there. She is a cultural sponge who perfectly reflects the world view of her audience and I have no choice but to tip my hat to her for that. If she continues doing what she does best than she has a very long career ahead of her.

Sydney | 2/18/2009, 7:48 am EST

Taylor Swift is the most original act out there right now. She is a beautiful girl and a beautiful soul. She makes her fans feel like they are her best friend. Anyone who takes the time to write that she is pure crap is just jealous and pathetic. Maybe you just go get yourself some talent.

jason | 2/18/2009, 7:58 am EST

Her songs suck. Nothing more need be said.

bizelion | 2/18/2009, 7:59 am EST

Taylor is a very beautiful girl & I love her songs!

brian | 2/18/2009, 8:01 am EST

Taylor Swift is manufactured and has that awful generic sound that comes from the minds of record producers who are stuck on mush mode.

bruH | 2/18/2009, 8:03 am EST

She’s awesome!
Love her!

toste | 2/18/2009, 9:20 am EST

Too many S’s in the headline

Lisa | 2/18/2009, 10:37 am EST

The girl is sweet and down t earth. But she can’t sing, especially live. Not sure what the fascination with her is.

Dan | 2/18/2009, 10:39 am EST

I cannot believe Rolling Stone put Taylor-Fucking-Swift on the cover of their magazine.

She’s hot: I get it. I saw her live on SNL, she can’t sing, though she’s quite adept at rhythmically strumming her guitar while some lame EMO kid does his very best to impress with half-assed guitar solos on bad songs.

ROLLING STONE: STOP THE MADNESS!

Listener | 2/18/2009, 10:40 am EST

She is a great lyricist and easy on the eyes, her voice isn’t that great but it nice to see some actually have melody and some kind of formal structure in their music I give her a thumbs up.

Dan | 2/18/2009, 10:42 am EST

I also wonder what the median age of all the girls posting in her favor is. I’d bet money it’s 14-16. And we all know they’re the authorities on good music.

1MoreThing | 2/18/2009, 10:46 am EST

Listener:
“She is a great lyricist…”

Which songs, sir or mam, are you referring to? Perhaps the one where she BRILLIANTLY rhymes “guitar” with “shooting star?”

Arsham | 2/18/2009, 12:02 pm EST

What the Hell?! the voice is really staggering but a little bit self effacing;i mean a little shy and that is bcause of her age.she is too young. You wanna see her like Amy the BITHCH fuck herself on the stage?
Fuck you all men!

heathen2002 | 2/18/2009, 12:23 pm EST

I would go down on her all day long…But I doubt that would do anything to help her inability to carry a tune.

thomasblaze9 | 2/18/2009, 12:23 pm EST

why do so many people hate taylor? shes a geniune artist. she writes her songs that actually mean something. people can relate to what she is singing about. i think she deserves a cover.

Alicia | 2/18/2009, 1:04 pm EST

I am so happy to see Taylor on the cover. She made herself into what she is today. Taylor has an honest and real voice unlike all those others who lip sync. Taylor begged her parents when she was young to move to Nashville and she worked her ass off to get noticed. I still don’t understand why there are so many haters. Taylor has grown a lot over the past couple years and her live performances have grown as well. Kudos to Taylor for sticking with what she knows and staying to true to herself. I know I would rather have my niece look up to her than anyone else right now.

anti-country | 2/18/2009, 3:01 pm EST

country music is boring and predicatble. its so depressing and dramatic. every song is about love, heartache, goin to the bar and gettin tipsy…same shit.

John | 2/18/2009, 3:02 pm EST

What the fuck

Rolling Stone- grow a pair

AMS | 2/18/2009, 3:26 pm EST

This is just killing the metal heads on here. What? She’s not trashing hotel rooms and gettin’ fucked up on drugs? She must be crap then.

Sorry assholes – you’ve got it backwards.

TBates | 2/18/2009, 3:31 pm EST

Taylor Swift came to my school before her first album came out in 2006. I had the chance to meet her and she actually is a genuine sweet girl. She went to the same high school as my girlfriends’ sister too. Even though I don’t listen to her music except for hearing her singles on the radio every once in a while I do respect her as a fellow musician, and I am one of the biggest indie snobs out there. I may not buy her albums or praise her constantly, but give the girl a break. I could care less if she’s on the cover of RS, I’m not going to buy the magazine regardless of who’s on it. I find RS’s style of reviewing very biased which is why I don’t read it.

RS1234 | 2/18/2009, 3:42 pm EST

cut this shit out rolling stone, stop covering miley cyrus, and taylor swift, none of us want to hear about these puppets of the disney corporations

ONLY LOSERS AND FAT BITCHES HATE TAYLOR! Jealous much?

DORF | 2/18/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Anybody who wants to check out some real country rather than Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, etc., (let’s face it, they’re top 40 eye candy and nothing more) should go to corporatecountrysucks.com, and check out true country artists such as Robbie Fulks, Deke Dickinson, and Billie Joe Shaver. Fortunately there are still people out there who still do it right.

Stephanie | 2/18/2009, 5:16 pm EST

She deserves to be on the cover! She’s an amazing person, song writer and singer. Oh sorry to all you people who can’t put up with one issue with a country girl on it. Is this hurting any of you in any way. Leave Taylor alone!

Taylor Swift | 2/18/2009, 5:18 pm EST

1. I’ve sold a lot of records when everyone else except Lil Wayne hasn’t so yes i should be on the rolling stone cover.
2. I AM NOT THE QUEEN OF COUNTRY!
3. I AM ONLY 19!
4. Because I am only 19 I can’t be the queen of country, maybe princess.
5. I have potential to be a respected songwriter.
6. I like the dick.

wow | 2/18/2009, 5:19 pm EST

i dont listen to indie…
i hate metal….
modern rock is so fucking corprate….
someone really needs to grow a pair…

Liz | 2/18/2009, 5:45 pm EST

OK…I am not a Taylor Swift fan – she’s charming but weak. (I will not even apologize for her songwriting abilities…I don’t hear it, but I am not a girl into princessy things…).

But I love watching the luddite RS readers bust a gut over this cover. LOVE IT!!

Also how did they manage to make her GORGEOUS hair look so gross on that cover?! LOL.

mandi | 2/18/2009, 7:01 pm EST

cat eyes

calebbbb | 2/18/2009, 7:02 pm EST

Props, Major Props!
Taylor Swift is amazing. Good for finally putting her on your cover.

Now, if you can just get Neko Case on there for Middle Cyclone on your next issue.

jen | 2/18/2009, 7:04 pm EST

i’m only waiting for the miley cyrus cover to cancel my subscription

TAYLORSUCKS | 2/18/2009, 7:35 pm EST

She is NOT the queen of country pop! What bs!

Carrie Underwood sings circles around this talentless wench.

Taylor cannot sing her way out of a paper bag… and yet you call her a “true artist?” True to what- pop remixing?

She remixes all her so-called country songs to pop club remixes, and yet you call her a “true” artist? What a joke! She is a pop sell out and would sell her mother down the river to make it big.

She can’t sing, she writes trite tween bubble gum pop with no substance or originality, and you crown her the Queen of Country?

what a joke. I am cancelling my subscription today.

CancelMySubcription | 2/18/2009, 7:38 pm EST

Dear rollingstone- you suck and so does Taylor Swift. This is the last straw. You ignore vastly superior artists like Carrie Underwood, and you glorify this horrible spoiled brat pop sellout who cannot sing to save her life?
wow. You clearly were paid big bucks by her rich daddy to worship the talent-less brat. She is the worst singer in any genre of music, period.

Michael | 2/18/2009, 7:41 pm EST

What a joke! Taylor is the worst singer in any genre of music, period. I cannot believe that Rollingstone magazine actually glorifies her, when she cannot sing her way out of a paper bag. if she is a “true” artist, then you must also love Milli Vanilli and the Jonas Brothers. Get real!

You virtually ignored Carrie Underwood, who has schooled Taylor in every facet of country music, dominating every industry award show. Carrie sings circles around taylor, and yet you call Taylor the “queen of country?” What a farce.

Taylor is not even country at all. She remixes her songs to pop radio and is a complete sellout. Her music was never country anyway. She needs to go to pop and stay there.

What a joke.

Andrea | 2/18/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Um, sorry RollingStone, but Carrie Underwood is the Queen of Country, not Taylor-can’tsing-Swift. I have yet to hear Taylor sing 3 notes in a row that are on key. She is the most over-rated, over-exposed singer in history. Even Britney can sing better then her, and that ain’t saying much.

Michael | 2/18/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Taylor can’t even sing her way out of a paper bag. What an insult to the real artists, like Carrie Underwood or even Kenny Chesney, who deserved to be on your cover. If you are going to cover a country artist, at least pick a real country artist, not someone who remixes all their songs to pop and was never country to begin with.

EnoughDisneyCrap | 2/18/2009, 7:46 pm EST

No one wants to read about Taylor-can’tsing-Swift. She is the worst singer in country, not the country queen. I literally cringe when she opens her mouth to sing, it is that dreadful. I just lost alot of respect for this magazine. It is being taken over by 12 year olds. Is Miley next?

Why can’t you ever cover Carrie Underwood, who sings circles around Taylor?

Ryan | 2/18/2009, 7:48 pm EST

The girl…cannot…sing.Period.
I cannot believe how over-rated she is. Why is Carrie Underwood never featured in your magazine? She is the true Queen of Country, and she doesn’t have to remix her songs to be number 1, unlike Taylor the sellout.

Alexis | 2/18/2009, 7:49 pm EST

Why is Carrie Underwood never featured in your magazine? She is a much better singer, and person, then Taylor. Taylor has yet to stay on key for a live show.

do-the-revolution@ | 2/18/2009, 7:50 pm EST

i cant believe rollingstone covers these disney pop bands. what the fuck?

what happened to rock’n'roll?
i dont understand how these tools can get an RS cover over bands like my morning jacket, death cab, etc. by doing that this magazine is essentially fueling the shit fire of horribly manufactured pop music the world loves lit under its own ass.

This magazine can make bands famous, give MMj or the black keys, whoever the cover.
Why dont you use your power to promote instead of conform?

Jen | 2/18/2009, 7:52 pm EST

Taylor cannot sing live, and does not deserve the hype she is getting. This is an insult.

Taylor Hater | 2/18/2009, 9:17 pm EST

I REALLLLLLLY hate this girl. She’s immature, and really stupid. She needs to grow up,and she’s NOT pretty! Why does ANYBODY like her?!

She is PERFECT! | 2/18/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Best singer ever! Taylor Swift is number one !

Billy | 2/18/2009, 9:42 pm EST

F*CK U2! Taylor has more talent in her cute big toe than all of U2!

Stephan | 2/18/2009, 9:56 pm EST

She cannot sing her way out of a paper bag. She is the most over-rated, horrid singer in music history.

Sally | 2/18/2009, 9:57 pm EST

Best singer ever? WTF??? You taylor worshipers must be smoking something good. Try worse then William hung. She is horrid.

Maria | 2/18/2009, 10:01 pm EST

She is not a good singer. Period. Carrie Underwood should be on the cover as she sings circles around Taylor.

Joe | 2/18/2009, 10:04 pm EST

She has pretty hair but a terrible voice.

Bryan | 2/18/2009, 10:42 pm EST

She’s cute but can’t sing.

Vince | 2/18/2009, 10:44 pm EST

She is so over-rated and over-exposed. She can’t sing to save her life.

cock balls | 2/19/2009, 12:13 am EST

it’s funny when someone says something like this:”The people buying her records prove that she is not crap even if you kids
feel that way.” If everyone has bought into it, then it must be awesome. This person and all the people with similar view’s on taylor swift’s so-called art must have a very narrow view on life and meaning.

sally | 2/19/2009, 12:14 am EST

All that hair of hers reminds me of a Farrah Fawcett-wannabe. Her songs remind me of that irritating generic mush that passes for country music these days. No wonder the American music industry is in a hole if the best you can offer is Taylor Swift.

jason | 2/19/2009, 12:16 am EST

The American music industry is in a very deep hole. And Taylor Swift is reflective of that hole.

DTB | 2/19/2009, 12:29 am EST

you know who should be on the cover? you know who does not reflect the sorry state of music today? you know who is a musician who is head and shoulders above the rest? DEREK TRUCKS. give him some recognition, his band just put out a great new album, (Already Free) and Rolling Stone pretty much overlooked it. you know who probably won’t win a grammy for that album? DEREK TRUCKS, because he doesn’t get the respect he deserves

Shannon | 2/19/2009, 2:39 am EST

I love Taylor’s music and she is amazing to her fans. People can disagree, it’s a free country but I think it’s unnecessary to be insulting and rude.

Taylor | 2/19/2009, 4:25 am EST

i love Taylor Swift!
why is everyone hating on her?
she is amazing

Myra Robinson | 2/19/2009, 6:45 am EST

I really like Taylor, she is a great singer and songwriter. the main thing I love about her is her “go get it” attitude. she saw her fav on tv(Faith Hill) and decided to do what she did.it has paid off.Carrie has already had plenty of attention,it is now Taylors turn. If TAylor is so bad, then why is she outselling others. I am a grandma and i really like this girl.and she has a great respect for her parents and will not get into drugs or anything like that.she wants to stay true to herself.I have a great deal of respect for her.Her voice is improving.have you heard White Horse.please stop putting her down, you know nothing about music!!

rockballs | 2/19/2009, 7:00 am EST

for the people that call this pretty young thing the queen of country i ask you this question:
have you ever heard loretta lynn or patsy cline or even tammy wynette.
if you have then you can tell the difference between a singer with the power ofa mouse and a legend such as loretta lynn who not only wrote most of her material but had the musicality and vocal power to interpret her songs with the right kind of eloquence and impact.
when people are promoted as kings and queens these days it’s because people don’t have the education or musical culture to tell the difference.
ignorance is bliss in this 2nd rate world of today and especially to the big wigs of the record company who are more interested in promoting an image rather than an artist with the substance to vlaidate a status such as being anointed queen.
mediocrity rules as long as ignorance permeates.

Remember when... | 2/19/2009, 7:10 am EST

Rolling Stone was a respected music magazine?

Remember when people like Hunter S. Thompson used to write for it?

Remember this fucking trash was worth reading?

Cancel your subscription people.
Move on. RS is dead.

David | 2/19/2009, 7:51 am EST

4 million albums sold in 2008, more than any other artist in any other genre! First country singer to be #1 on the pop charts, ever! Numbers don’t lie! This girl can sing!

rockballs | 2/19/2009, 8:47 am EST

david:
millions of people bought milli vanilli and paula addul records too and does that make it any more art than what it truly is which is musical swill (thank you lester banfs for the inspiration).
if we are to judge by sales than we are no different than the big wig corporate heads who wouldn’t know real art if it kicked them in their ignorant artless money obsessed little heads.
sales don;t indicate art.
if that was the case then garth brooks is the luswig van beethven of his time and hank williams is the boxcar willie of country.

yeh me | 2/19/2009, 8:51 am EST

OOhhhhhnnoooooo she can’t, seriously, she is as horrible of a singer as it gets, a mockery.

yeh you | 2/19/2009, 8:55 am EST

How can she sing through those squinty eyes?

Erin | 2/19/2009, 9:01 am EST

The greatest country singer ever! Taylor Swift is GOD!

Michele-44 | 2/19/2009, 10:05 am EST

Apparently many of you who have made hateful comments about Taylor Swift have never sat down and read her lyrics. You’ve only heard a song or two in passing. Her lyrics are experiences of a teenage girl and her friends, brought up in Christian homes to have feelings and morals. Oh, I know how that might offend some of you out there, but that’s who she is. If you’ve ever wondered what’s going on in the mind of your teenage daughter, sister, or friend, Taylor is giving you an inside look. Read those lyrics!
By the way, kids are reading this simply because it’s Taylor. The language in some of these comments is not needed here, but expected from RS readers. I’ve been a subscriber for many, many years, so I know. My very first issue had John and Oko naked on the cover. My mother nearly had a heart attack. I was grounded for a month for ordering such smut. Reluctantly, she allowed me to keep the subscription after she read the magazine, accepting the fact that it was about the music and the artists.
The cover shot has always been about drawing attention to the mag, getting you to pick it up, buy it, and discuss it, whether you love it or hate it.
OMG!! They did it again!!

joey | 2/19/2009, 11:33 am EST

TALOR SWIFT IS A GREAT STORY AND A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL FOR YOUNG GIRLS UNLIKE ALL THESE OTHER RAP (crap) so called artists that cant stay out of trouble for more than a week . GOD bless TaYLOR AND ALL THE MONEY SHE TAKE AWAY FROM THESE OTHER LOSERS CALLED MUSICIANS WITHOUT INSTUMENTS!

No Country Queen | 2/19/2009, 12:12 pm EST

I had to read that twice…no way is Taylor Can’t Sing Swift the Country Queen. She is so manufactured it isn’t funny. The true country fans won’t even listen to her music or watch her videos. Her appeal is to the pop tweens. What an insult to country music. You must have gotten paid a lot of money to put her on the cover because there are lots of real country artist that deserve to be there. But it is all about the sales and fame to her. You can hear that every time she opens her mouth to speak.

Any7way | 2/19/2009, 12:23 pm EST

Go Taylos Swift!! Great voice, great songs. She is for sure not manufactured. Watching her on youtube, recording her song change, etc. you`ll se how much impact she has in making her songs. She is a REAL artist, with no dirty secret. Love her!!!!

So Awful | 2/19/2009, 1:06 pm EST

I wouldn’t walk across the street to see this girl. She is so fake and sounds awful!

A Concerned Country Music Fan | 2/19/2009, 1:25 pm EST

To The one that said we need to sit down and read the lyrics–No Thanks You–The lyrics are all about kids and every song sounds the same-Princess and Fairy Tales.
That I could understand if she could sing but her vocals are flatt and She can not sing anything but her own songs. I gave her a fair shot when she first came out–But then I heard her sing Silent Night and someone had to tell me what she had sang–It was Bad–And then when she tried to do a tribute to Brenda Lee a great Classic Lady of Country Music–She butchered I’m Sorry–And too top it all off she changed in the middle of the song and started singing her own song–Shameful self promotion–The others that were there did not do that.
And all those sales–I do not buy that for an instant–something fishy there–maybe it will all come out soon, and all this Hype will be over. I sure hope so for all the Country Music Fans out here.

annette | 2/19/2009, 1:39 pm EST

this girl sucks!! She is so overrated and i cannot stand to hear her open her mouth. When they say her song is the next to come on the radio, i turn it off. Carrie Underwood is the best, and little miss hot shot Swift does not have a change next to this charming talented singer. Taylor go back to playing with your dolls! No one wants to hear you sing. You totally suck! Your not country music and quit crying around over your no love afairs, no why would a guy want you!

I love | 2/19/2009, 1:42 pm EST

how people dont like her and then they have to bash her on this.. she is sooo amazing. she can sing better than all the people on here that says she cant sing. Taylor is soo beautiful. I LOVELOVELOVE her

I love | 2/19/2009, 1:43 pm EST

also how people says she cant sing while she sold more albums than any other artist in 2008. hmmm

you are a total joke little miss think your so hot stuff!! Really Taylor you have no breasts so why are you going to these Nationally televised events trying to reveal your self, if that what you think real Country Music People want is to see your dresses that you can’t even fill them out anyway. Get a life you are a fake and I hope the spotlight fades on you, as fast as it went up the charts. all i can say is the people that bought your albums, CD’s etc, must have been so bumbed out from the recession we are in and that was there last alternative is to listen to your mousey voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!you suck!

Dan | 2/19/2009, 1:46 pm EST

I love Taylor Swift. She is amazing singer and a great role model! People out there are saying that she suck, well they have their opinion ( even though its wrong)..I love her so much and cant stop listening to her music

V | 2/19/2009, 1:46 pm EST

“TALOR SWIFT IS A GREAT STORY AND A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL FOR YOUNG GIRLS UNLIKE ALL THESE OTHER RAP (crap). GOD bless TaYLOR AND ALL THE MONEY SHE TAKE AWAY FROM THESE OTHER LOSERS CALLED MUSICIANS WITHOUT INSTUMENTS!”

Very good point. I don’t listen to her music personally but it’s refreshing to see an actual musician versus a lyp-syncing corporate manufactured puppet created soley to just sell records. I have a feeling she’s going to be around for a while and she’s only going to better with experience. We need more “contenders” and less “pretenders” these days.

Jimmy P. | 2/19/2009, 2:05 pm EST

AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!SUCKS!!!!!!!!!! GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!UGLY!!!!!!!!IF PEOPLE SAY THIS IS COUNTRY THERE GOING TO LOSE A LOT OF HONEST LOYAL COUNTRY MUSIC FANS, THIS IS SO FAR FROM COUNTRY, HEY TAYLOR GO PLAY WITH MYLIE, YOUR SQUINTING JUST LIKE SHE DID. NOW SHE IS IT- AS FOR YOU HANG IT UP, GO BACK TO SCHOOL, AND PLEASE SHUT YOUR MOUTH IT IS LIKE GETTING AN INSTANT MIGRANE!!

rockballs | 2/19/2009, 2:08 pm EST

this just in!
taylor swift is to be featured in the new penthouse magazine in all her glory then she will do a movie with ron jeramy playing a plummer!
way to go church girl!
listen people.
the people you most need to watch are the ones who profess to go to church and live by the word of god.
these people are many times the ones stabbing you in the back to get your job or your girl or man.
hypocrisy can be the deepest when a front is in use.

Ryan D | 2/19/2009, 2:44 pm EST

To the person who wrote: “also how people says she cant sing while she sold more albums than any other artist in 2008. hmmm”

And milli Vanilli won a Grammy. Your point is??

Record sales do not equate talent. Rather, in Swift’s case, her success is very much a product of clever marketing and dating Joe Jonas.

Sorry, but I’m a musician and the girl has a pathetic, weak voice. She is even worse live. All of this is a joke, a slap in the face to the people who can sing.

Any7way | 2/19/2009, 3:02 pm EST

Love Taylor Swift!! Have been listening to her music for months now, and simply can`t stop listening… Have 2 kids 4 and 6 who absolutely love her songs, and make me play them alot:) Listen to a lot of country music, which i LOVE, and other kind of music too. Can`t help loving her for being real!!! (The people who have got Disney mixed up with T.S. (since she happen to know Miley Cyrus)??, no NOTHING about Taylor Swift. She has worked her own way to sucsess). Bet they havn`t really given her a real shot. To me alot of you gyes sound jealous!?!

I’m certainly not going to read this article. However, I am interested in the 5-star U2 album review. I also find it curious that U2 is not on the cover given No Line On the Horizon is only 2 weeks away. I’d say Rolling Stone is appealling to the money – she sells a lot of CD’s and may have more of a young following than U2. But then again, this is U2’s first 5-star album rating from RS. Curious.

I agree (except you’re wrong about this being their first 5 stars from RS). As to this girl, I don’t know if her stuff is bad or good. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of song of her’s. I couldn’t care less.

U2 has a freakin 12th studio album releasing in two weeks, and it’s the best thing they’ve done since Achtung Baby! Get their asses on the cover RS!

Rap, Britney and now Country Western? RS is a joke.

I agree with ''Kliff'' ... | 2/19/2009, 5:54 pm EST

RS should be writting about rock n roll artists. hard rock, blues, rock n roll, heavy metal, progressive metal, etc.
G-O-O-D music not this

Kliff: ”Rap, Britney and now Country Western? RS is a joke.”
AMEN to that.

Andrea | 2/19/2009, 8:09 pm EST

Her music is AWESOME … with the quality of her music, it is definitely not packaged. She’s a normal teenage girl who knows her priorities. I was exactly like her when I was her age (less talented though), as was my friends.

thomasblaze9 | 2/19/2009, 9:15 pm EST

teen girls out there need someone like taylor as a role model. shes a down to earth person that loves doing what she does. i dont understand why all these people are bashing her as the cover story…rolling stone is a stupid magazine anyway. the only reason im getting this issue is for her. shes amazing!

Tricia | 2/20/2009, 12:33 am EST

So the truth is Taylor Swift, whether you like her or not is a musician, she writes and plays her songs therefore she deserves to grace the cover of RS just like any other musician. Also I want to further point out that actors, athletes, and politicians have also been featured as cover stories so to say that only rock-n-roll, blues, and metal acts should be on the cover is just wrong. As far as how many albums she has sold this does equate to influence and likability, to compare Taylor Swift to Milli is senseless because (a)we aren’t talking about someone who doesn’t sing their songs and (b)Taylor Swift is a popular singer and people who aren’t subscribers to R.S. are going to pick the magazine up and buy it and at the end of the day that is the kind of story that you need to draw readers in.

musicjunkie13 | 2/20/2009, 1:51 am EST

Hi,
As a Rolling Stone subscriber of 10+ years it has been a long time since I have been this excited & watching the mailbox!
I have had a great respect for Taylor since her debut single “Tim McGraw”! It takes guts to put something like that out there,(as a debut single at that) having no idea how it would be recieved by listeners at country radio. Not to mention she must have worried herself wondering how Tim himself would react to her song. She made a very personal statement with that tune.
Right now she is in a league of her own,her talent knows no end!
Her writing is awesome, personal, & heartfelt, and country fans LOVE that in an artist.
No doubt Miss Swift is going to be around for a very long and prosperous career,if she continues to stay true to herself & stays humble.
A great role model for our daughters too!
I am a huge fan partly due to the admiration my 7 yr. old foster daughter (I have had her since age 1.) Brooklyn has for Taylor.Last month I had to buy her her 1st guitar (pink) so that she can start lessons. She has only been 7 for 7 weeks, but she has such a will & determination (probably due to the circumstances she was born into) to play & sing…. that I as a 44 yr. old single parent feel that no matter what we have to sacrifice for these lessons…it must be done. She deserves a shot at her dream too, no matter if she comes from a “normal” family or not.I pray God blesses us with a way to do this.
Taylor we appreciate the inspiration you have provided Brooklyn!
I mean in 2 years you have become a superstar….a very deserving one too.God Bless & be with you Taylor.
peace & love,
~Angie~
p.s. I not only dig country, but rock,(old & new)rap, punk.I think there is good music to be heard in all genres…so don’t expect me to listen to any genre exclusively!

marie | 2/20/2009, 2:31 am EST

i really admire you taylor swift! you’ve got the beauty inside and out also the voice, and it is a real talent of yours which you can share to us. i really love your songs esp. the LOVE STORY actually it is still the no.1 song here in Philippines untill now, also the white horse which place on no. 3.
so keep on writing more songs, just forget joe jonas i think he doesnt deserve a good role model like you.
lastly, dont mind those people who dont appreciate your songs just remmember that your at the top and they’re just a crap!

And your point is... | 2/20/2009, 3:57 am EST

“Her lyrics are experiences of a teenage girl and her friends, brought up in Christian homes to have feelings and morals.”

Which is why it’s so sad that a once notable publication like RS decides to give her the front page. Surely good Christian girls are RS’s new target audience, right?

Fuck off dipshit.

rockballs | 2/20/2009, 6:56 am EST

with all due respect to rolling stone:
you have gone from putting such esteemed and truly distinguished artists like john lennon to putting taylor swift and britney spears on your cover.
what happened?
you used to be about the art and it used to be a true privilage to end up on the cover of a rolling stone because you once had integrity and dignity.
the problem with money is that it corrupts when greed becomes the dominant factor.
when this happens you lose your morale, dignity, ethics, and sense of right and wrong.
putting people such as taylor swift is promoting people above and beyond based on someone who’s making immense sales.
immense sales due to a promotion machine and a less than cultured buying public.
her music is trivial and her voice has no power nor impressive range.
what happened to yo rolling stone and mr. wenner i address you in particular.
a magazine needs to survive yes that is true but at the cost of their own soul?
R.I.P. Lester Bangs.

Emily | 2/20/2009, 10:37 am EST

Why all the vitriol? I love the guy who commented that Rolling Stone used to be a SERIOUS magazine with articles on JOHN LENNON. I hate to remind you, but John Lennon wasn’t some subversive indie rock star, he was a member of one of the biggest POP MUSIC acts of all time. Just b/c it is pop doesn’t mean it can’t be well written. Rolling Stone is going to write about what is current in music, and this girl is definitely current, so let’s calm down a bit.

If you don’t like her, why did you take the time read an article on her and comment on it? If you want to waste your time, then be my guest. She was the top selling artist of 2008 for a reason. She has talent, whether you want to believe it or not. She sold out the Staples Center in 2 minutes. Her dad did not buy her fame. She worked extremely hard to get to where she is today, and she deserves all the success she has gotten. I’ve met her four times, and she is one of the most genuine, sweet people I’ve ever met.

“The lyrics are all about kids and every song sounds the same-Princess and Fairy Tales.”

Because I’m sure these lyrics are about kids and princess:

You put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray
And I stood there loving you and wished them all away
And you come away with a great little story
Of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you

You never did give damn thing honey, but I cried, cried for you.
And I know you wouldn’t have told nobody if I died, died for you.

Anti- Anti- Taylor Swift | 2/21/2009, 6:31 pm EST

You Taylor-haters are just getting it all wrong. Taylor Swift is a great person, a great singer, and shes cute too. Now all you immature, sexist, obnoxious men who don’t like her songs just because their romantic, it is getting REALLY old. If you don’t like her, then shut your mouth and stop complaining. And if you want to cancel your issue of RS, then fine! See if we care. Your just missing out, and for what? You don’t like one cover-girl? Get over it and move on with your sorry lives, so the real music enthusiasts can praise her for what she deserves! She has worked her ass off her entire life so she could make with the talent you all know she has, and she cant and wont stop because in our sorry world she has to put up with so much crap everyday from all you people. So stop making life harder for her and just get on with you sorry lives!

catethegreat108 | 2/22/2009, 6:33 am EST

I hate it when people say “boo self promotion” or she’s “talentless” “not country” and what not. first of all, EVERY artist ever to get into the music business had to go through a time of Self Promotion. Unless you get on some stupid show like American Idol, where they make you into what THEY want, not who you are. All the great classic country artists self promoted such as, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, The Hagg, George Jones, ect. What she’s done to get where she is, are all the right steps. My family is person friends with many people in the music business, including the Cash family. And from what they say, self promotion is the way to bigger oppurtunies. And she is def. NOT talentless. She writes or at least co-writes every bit of the material on her albums. I do quite a bit of songwriting myself, and i can tell you its not easy to be a good songwriter. Its a God given talent, and she’s got it. You think her songs are “cliche” but her writing style and form isn’t compared to the rest of the music industry. Cliche is most of the music in the Hip-Hop/Rap scene, all they talk about is, sex, drugs, money, girls, ect…And the whole “not country” deal. She may have a pop feel to her songs, but she is far more country than “Big&Rich” who sound more rock than anything. or Gretchen Wilson (yes her lyrics were country, but not her music) there are a LOT of other artists i could list as well. Stop bringing her down. She deserves every bit of what she’s gotten, and worked her butt off to get it. And she’s one of the only celeb’s that isn’t mentally ill and prob never will be. Being on the Cover of RS is a BIG deal, and cutting her down makes you sound pathetic, and jealous..grow up.

Anonymous | 2/22/2009, 2:38 pm EST

I think Taylor more than deserved to be on the cover. She has written and co_written every song she has on her cd which is an amazing feat to be seen by such a young woman. I love her music and there isn’t one song i hate on any of her cds. i can honestly say i think Taylor is an artist who will always remain true to herself despite the corrupt industry she is in.

GAwwdd I am so sick of her weak nasal singing.

And what’s with the princess act already?! She is so FAKE!! Why are you all buying her “deer in the headlights” stupidity? oohh hee I’m Taylor and I’m so cute and stupid and look at me, I’m an angel, an angel!

She’s just gonna end up fat and ugly like her mom.

There’s a reason guys don’t date idiots like Taylor for very long.

Dizzy | 2/25/2009, 12:21 am EST

I think someone needs to get a dictionary and look up the definition of sociopath. I’ve always found it wise to know what you are talking about before you talk about it.

Progya | 2/25/2009, 2:06 am EST

Taylor Swift is a talented artist, I cannot say what she is in life, never having seen her and I haven’t actually researched about her either, but I can say this, her music is really good.
It is rude to insult her.I think the first and the most important thing to look for in an artist is the art, and her art is music, and that she is pretty good at.

Country Fan | 2/25/2009, 1:19 pm EST

I think Taylor has an amazing voice. She’s good at what she does because she makes it personal, and you can tell that by listening to her music. Keep up the good work Taylor.

Over it | 2/25/2009, 1:38 pm EST

Taylor Swift just proves that people are tone deaf and that a pretty face will get you lots of money and people bowing at your feet because you are making money for them. While personally I have nothing against her she cannot sing period. If I hear one more award show with her on it I am going to stop watching them. Its about time that people stop tolerating the cookie cutter mentality of the music industry however I guess they have in a way since record /cd sales are down. While it is a good thing Ms.Swift writes at least she will always have money coming in, once though her record sales drop she will just be another pretty face thrown to the side by her handlers who will move on to the next one to make them money. Because in the music industry its not about the talent its about how you look and how much money you are making for all the ones with their hand out!

wolfgirl | 2/26/2009, 5:11 am EST

i truly love Taylor Swift!

those who hate her..
you’re only making her more famous by commenting..well..thanks for that..she has the voice and she writes good songs..she really deserves a cover..

uhm.. pinoyrockz?..are you a pinoy?.. well if you are..i’m disappointed..i love pinoy singers and i believe in their talent in singing but you can’t call anybody a crap..especially Taylor..well i think you’re just jealous..because she’s beautiful and has good voice..do you have that? even just one?

Melissa | 2/26/2009, 12:59 pm EST

it funny am lied in denmark wee can’t buy her album. Like her music. in Norway and Sweden wee also can’t buy her album.

Jenna | 2/27/2009, 1:10 pm EST

Look I like Taylor. She has a charming personality and she has had the determination to get herself where she is today. She has a very large fan base that keeps her stardom alive. But lets face it outside of the recording studio where here voice is mixed to sound good she really sounds like a chipmunk on stage in person. A little flat and off pitch. Kind of like most of sound like singing in the shower.

Sad Day for Country Music | 3/3/2009, 6:32 pm EST

I am a true country fan and I am disgusted that Taylor Swift is considered country. Her songs are POP, I will hand it to the RS for referring to her as “country pop” GET HER OFF THE COUNTRY STATIONS AND ONTO POP ONES. She can’t even sing a note on key! If the girl somehow ruins her pretty face we will never here from her again.

I find it extremely funny about all you “Taylor haters.” Do you have nothing better to do then reply to this article with negativity? She can sing, she is gorgeous, and how the hell do you figure she is manufactured. She turned down a record deal because they would not allow her to be herself. She has accomplished so much at 18. You are so quick to say she cannot sing and beauty is her only thing, well did you ever figure how she got to where she is? She clearly has talent. You comment on her “cheesy” lyrics, can you tell me you have written a song? Stop being sadistic haters and go find someone else to relay your personal issues on. If you have nothing nice to say, then just don’t say it becuase we don’t want to hear the ramblings of incoherrent morons.

Peace & Love

Hey all of all people who saying mean things about taylor swift i have a few words to say TO SAY TO ALL “BACK OFF” and if you dont have nice things to say dont say them at all. Taylor swift is pretty, shes a good singer and song writer and for all haters of taylor swift back off.

you're all idiots. | 3/13/2009, 7:56 pm EST

first of all to whatever idiot responded before being properly infromed, the beatles were always considered pop you fucktard. even though, yeah, our idea of “pop” is slightly different now, they were considered POP.

more on topic though. no matter what you say taylor swift is a true artist. i hate country music. and i hate most pop music. but how can you hate on someone who turned down a record deal at 15 because they wouldn’t allow her to write her own music? she could have still made millions. MILLIONS. and she turned it down to stay true to herself. she does what she does be cause its what she loves. if it was about the money, the fame, the endless fan base that you are all hating on. she would have taken the stupid record deal at 15. clearly it is just what she loves to do. and if you can get a job you love to do, make millions, and have other people enjoy your music, tell me you wouldn’t do it. TELL ME. you fucktards.

asdfghjk | 3/13/2009, 11:06 pm EST

I lost count of how many times “she can’t sing her way out of a paper bag” was said. I realized how pointless that comment was the first time. I didn’t need to read it again.

I personally am a huge fan. She may not be the best singer but she’s unique, marketable, and down to earth which is more than can be said for many artists these days.

Hayley | 4/12/2009, 11:48 pm EST

Who says you need talent just long blond hair and cute face will get you long way Taylor Swift has made a career of it but look at her mom that is what Taylor Swift may turn into in 25 years.

canehiller | 4/16/2009, 10:33 pm EST

WOW! What a varied bunch of opinions…it is great to live in a democratic society. Years ago when I began singing my voice was off key only because it was changing. Lucky I didn’t take it to heart as most of my heroes could be considered horrid~ Dylan…Segar…Nugent…Jagge r… Joplin…Hendrix! The thing about my singing is that I will never be good but Taylor Swift really is good. She happens to be my favorite youth voice. Plus she has the biggest heart and is willing to share it with her fans. Rolling Stone might consider NOT putting actors and political figures on their cover and put more great not-so-well known artists on the cover. As country music goes…why do some of the commenter’s seem to put up walls and fences? A person that is labeled country should only play country and not stray to other genres. I personally like all kinds of music and being a country songwriter I am amazed at Taylors ability at constructing pictures in my mind with words. I am proud to have her a flag bearer of the country music flag. Oh… by the was I dig rap-metal-americana etc. Before some people make judgments they should give the artist the benefit of the doubt and learn a little about them first then they could give an intelligent opinion. About the 2 strings missing on the R.S.cover of Taylor…I bet it was another move to see if you were really paying attention. Taylor Nation will be a force to be reckoned with for a very long time…like it or not!

surely you know Taylor Swift is not a country singer she does pop/bubblegum music for teenage girls and is more like Miley Cyrus or The Jonas Brothers of country music.
shes the fad of country music right now that will wear thin after a while.
however her beauty my take her a long way.

Hay Hayley…Thanks for responding it is refreshing to have a dialog going without taking offense. I think you are right in a lot of ways about Taylors demographic being mostly kids and girls and that sooner or later they will grow up and go on to other music. I recently took a poll at a biker bar no less and found out that the Ole ladies absolutely loved Taylor…not so much the men but the women were from 30 to 50 years old. Guess the message in her songwriting crosses many boundaries. I would like to refer to legends like Kitty Wells Loretta Lynn Tammy Wynette who were also criticized for not being country enough and girl singers should stay home and out of the business. It seems that all successful people especially women have had a hard time in country music including Tanya…Martina…Faith…Shan ia…Jewel and Avril Lavigne. The reason they overcame their detractors was that they remained true to themselves. It has helped Shania ,Jewel, Avril and Taylor that they write their own songs and play instruments. Maybe I wouldn’t classify Taylor Swift as country in the old sense of the meaning but Americana might be a better tag. Don’t tell Reba that Taylor is not country though ;) (She is thoroughly adored by her peers in Nashville)! Anyways Hayley…I hope to hear your opinion and others who may like to respond. Peace to you!

This girl is a true human being, she is trying to live right she is authentic and instead of trying to sell you trash food she is sharing her art, so even if you do not like her songs, I feel she deserves respect as an artist for sharing her art and leave up to every one of you who may judge it. At the end of the day she is an artist for herself and for honest reasons.

taylor swift is a money making prefabricated nontalented singer.Good for the investers, but bad for the country music world.

ghostfreak | 6/6/2009, 4:59 am EST

she is good. i dont care about what other people say about her, i mean we all have different likes, and for me, this 19-year-old, writer-singer is an AWESOME package..i’ve read a lot about her, her blogs, her posts, and guess what, i dont feel like she’s lying, she’s no hypocrite..she’s like a REGULAR teen who loves writing songs about almost everything thats happend to her, and giving them TUNES, ..i also bought her FEARLESS CD, i love her songs, and i voted her on CMD.com, i mean, she’s an idol.SHE ROCKS, and she says that she’s a fan of a fan, that’s rare for STARS.. some thinks they’re god, but taylor is different..SHE’S A JEWEL..

I used to like Carrie Underwood. This a blog about Taylor Swift. Carrie Underwood is the plastic…manufactured ass kissing singer that we all know her to be. Taylor Swift has learned some things from CU…to not be like her. Taylor Swift has Swiftly passed CU popularity~ the way it should be. I love Taylor!

The Taylor detractors will soon be begging forgiveness from Taylor Swift…and you know what??? She WILL forgive you…why….because she is nice and that is what goddesses do! Support Taylor Swift!

Taylor swift is a very talented young lady and has become very famous over the few years because oh her hard work she has put into this music career.

Jason | 10/14/2009, 10:29 am EST

Cashviller | 10/16/2009, 4:39 pm EST

AHHHH….I’m gonna tell your mommy about you using bad words! Taylor Swift has the most awesomest voice in the history of music. I think …I know she is a very nice young lady. So be nice or I’ll tell her daddy…then you will get it!

9:55PM | 10/18/2009, 7:57 am EST

Wow. People sure hate Taylor Swift. Why? Gosh. She expresses her feelings through her songs and you don’t like that she’s opening her life out to the whole world. Well. Whatever. If you don’t like it then why are you actually commenting. I like her. She’s cool.

NotPatheticLikeYou | 10/20/2009, 10:11 am EST

I’ve noticed that a lot of you use these:

1. She cannot sing her way out of a paper bag
2. Carrie Underwood should be on the cover as she sings circles around Taylor.
3. She is so over-rated and over-exposed. She can’t sing to save her life.

You know guys, anyone who’s commented negatively should just suck it. If you seriously hate her so much then would you even bother commenting? And your subscription? Yeah well earth to you, at some point a magazine (not just RS) will feature something/someone that you don’t like and some do.

Taylor Swift really intended to write songs for teens from 14-16 (or so) and it really isn’t her fault that she appealed to others.. PLENTY more of others, is it? The number of awards and attention she’s got so far.. sheesh. You gotta hand it to her.

Everyone has fans, everyone has their own taste in music. Just live with that people. Not everyone are obligated to listen to your own preference of what’s cool to listen to.

And by the way, nothing’s wrong with being innately good and courteous. Ya’ll need it.

PS
It’s a big deal to get on RS. And artists who are actually A BIG DEAL gets featured here. So if in case you’re wondering why that guy or that band or this girl isn’t featured, well wait till they get enough heat or attention. If you think they’re so hot then they’ll probably get featured like you want them too.
