Oops: “Guitar Hero: Metallica” Cover Art Misspells Lynyrd Skynyrd

2/17/09, 1:26 pm EST

The cover has been unveiled for the anxiously awaited Guitar Hero: Metallica, and the artwork pumps up the contributions of all the bands not named Metallica featured in the game, like Judas Priest, Alice in Chains, Queen, and Lynyrd… Skynrd (check the left-center). Sadly, it seems the Southern rock heroes have lost a Y in their band name — haven’t they lost enough already? Even the (properly) misspelled Mercyful Fate get their name handled correctly, and the oft-mangled Mastodon pass the fact-checking test. It doesn’t mean that Skynyrd’s bluesy kiss-off “Tuesday’s Gone” will be any less fun to play, though.

It’s also been announced that Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister will make an appearance as an animated character in the game, so players can gargle along with “Ace of Spades” without having to see a spiky-haired punk rock caricature singing it onscreen. There are also multiple songs featuring the facepaint-loving King Diamond, so there’s even money on him making an appearance, as well.

Metallica’s biggest songs are represented in the track list (”Enter Sandman,” “Sad But True,” “One”), but there are also a few old gems thrown in for the diehards, including “Dyers Eve,” “The Shortest Straw” and “Hit the Lights,” the first song the band ever wrote and released. The XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game — which will be sold stand-alone, so players will already need the rest of the Guitar Hero gear — will be released on March 29.

For Rolling Stone’s hands-on preview of the game, check out our Sneak Peek: Guitar Hero: Metallica.

Dennis O'Bell | 2/17/2009, 4:12 pm EST

What is it about Metallica that it causes momentary music-biz brain farts? After all, Rolling Stone left the band out of their 2005 Album Guide altogether…

Anonymous | 2/17/2009, 6:31 pm EST

Something is rotten in Denmark when you can’t freaking spell Skynyrd…Oh that’s right…Lars is from Denmark…what a tool!

Coop | 2/17/2009, 8:37 pm EST

I’m a die-hard Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, and it really irritates me when people misspell the band name. It is NOT…
Skynrd
Skynard
Skiny rd
Skinerd
or ANYTHING ELSE…
it is SKYNYRD.
And they are the greatest southern rock band ever put on God’s green earth!

MaxShrek | 2/17/2009, 8:41 pm EST

Huh, I think most people at first would spell it wrong, but this being on the packaging (is it the official scan?) is just silly stupid.

eightball | 2/17/2009, 11:31 pm EST

See their first album if you can’t spell it

Alex | 2/18/2009, 4:02 am EST

Metallica since the Black Album have always tried to have a finger in every pie. That’s the problem with fame. It drives musicians to want to involved in everything they can to make more money and the music suffers. No wonder they haven’t done anything decent for the last 15 years.

Death Magnetic is okish. I got bored of the album in only few listens. Even though it’s the best thing they’ve done in the last 15 years it’s not enough to make me believe in them again. I find Chinese Democracy to be much more interesting but the hate towards Axl killed the album even before it was released.

Anyway Death Magnetic has terrible vocals, sloppy guitar solos and what’s with the horrible compression and painful snare drum?

Congratulations Metallica for finding another source of income while your music skills go down the drain.

“And they are the greatest southern rock band ever put on God’s green earth!”

Southern rock… Allman Brothers was and is vastly superior, CCR absolutely destroys Skynyrd and they were from Cali so… yeah…

Good job Metallica on the typo though that’s really pro, not.

rockballs | 2/18/2009, 6:35 am EST

i think this sucks!
skynyrd were THE BEST southern rock band.
allman borhters were the best southern blues rock band.
there’s a difference and skynyrd can never be topped in sothern rock.
people should also show respect as this was one of the greatest bands ever in rock and classic albums like like helping, debut, and street survivors will be played 100 years from now with the same impact they’ve had since the 70’s!
even the who and the stones asked skynyrd to open up for them during their peak so that says alot about how good this band WAS.
they’re over now but ronnie van zant and his bandmates music lives on!

me | 2/18/2009, 8:08 am EST

sloppy guitar solos?? get an ear check dumbass.

Alex | 2/18/2009, 9:57 am EST

Do you play guitar? Do you play well?

Kirk hammett’s solos on Death Magnetic are sloppy and anyone here that plays guitar can tell you that. He was never the most precise guitar player but his early solos were extremely catchy and cool.

He’s trying to prove himself on Death Magnetic by playing fast runs but it’s just not good enough compared with his early solos. I love metallica. I’ve been listening since 1988 and Kirk Hammett is one of my favorite guitar players. I’m not saying this out of spite but simply out of disappointment to see one of my influences being lazy and sloppy.

Kirk Hammet can do better than what he did.

Tawanda | 2/18/2009, 10:44 am EST

But I swear Chris Brown ain’t done nothing to nobody, y’all. He so fine! I heard he the octopussy’s baby daddy, fo real yo.

the porksword | 2/18/2009, 10:59 am EST

That’s right…let’s all blame Metallica for the misspelling. I’m sure Lars and James were in Lars’ basement printing off the cover…
Really, if you are looking to blame someone, blame the company who was in charge of producing this thing.

Mitch | 2/18/2009, 11:22 am EST

Alex, thanks for sharing your opinions of Death Magnetic as if your words are straight from the Gospel of Heavy Metal According to Alex.

I play the guitar and find Kirk’s solos on DM to be quite satisfying, especially in Cyanide, All Nightmare Long, and The Unforgiven III. But then, I’m apparently not as good as you and misinformed of The Truth. Perhaps you can give me some lessons?

I also find Hetfield’s voice to be satisfying, perhaps his best vocals since Justice. They’re 100% better than his work on St. Anger, and much more aggressive than the Load/ReLoad era. His live performance has also increased 100% since the ‘03 Madly in Anger tour.

But then, maybe I just need hearing lessons so that I can properly listen to the record and learn The Truth.

Gotta love these music fans who want to claim superiority over bands like Metallica. I guess maybe they should hire some of these guys to tutor them… maybe that way their clearly-established musical skills won’t continue their downward spiral.

Joe | 2/18/2009, 12:16 pm EST

thank you metallica…that was just your life!!!
right? (oooopppsssssss)

Ringo | 2/18/2009, 6:31 pm EST

No one’s gonna buy the game anyways. All my friends hate Metallica (even though they like metal)

Alex | 2/19/2009, 3:44 am EST

Mitch, like you said “quite satisfying”, and that’s not good enough for me.

I’m not claiming superiority. I know I could never be as good as these guys, I’m comparing their music with their music and not my music. Death Magnetic compared with my band is a masterpiece, a work of genius, I wish I could get to that level. What I’m saying is that Kirk can do better than “satisfying”. James vocals are pretty much gone, even though I agree that it’s the best he’s done since the Black Album.

For instance Lars, do you think his drumming has been any good since and justice for all?

I love the band and I’m in no way attacking them. It’s just what I feel.

Mr Grim | 2/19/2009, 8:10 am EST

Mitch:

Death Magnetic is the last gasp of a band thats running on empty. Its only good because you’re comparing it to St. Anger. Anything is better than Anger which would make DM look that much better. Hetfield cant sing any more and Lars has never even been an adequate metal drummer. There is a big difference between “satisfying” and Great.

Dont Need To Know | 2/19/2009, 9:33 am EST

i have 2 things to say. 1 is that well people make mistakes and this is one of them. if people didnt put this all over the internet then mabye the company wouldnt have to spend more money on the new cover!

2 i think GH is stealing RB bands. like Alice in Chains and System of a Down because first RB had them and NOW GH which i think is just STUPID AND WRONG!

da pope | 2/19/2009, 12:11 pm EST

gh did not steal rb bands, metallica made a list of bands and songs they wanted, and you can’t say metallica stole those bands.

da pope | 2/19/2009, 12:11 pm EST

gh did not steal rb bands, metallica made a list of bands and songs they wanted, and you can’t say metallica stole those bands.

Mitch | 2/19/2009, 12:38 pm EST

Alex,

I disagree of course. I don’t think you have the right to say Kirk’s playing is “sloppy” or somehow below his other work. Kirk’s work ethic speaks for itself, and the band members themselves stated that they could not have released a better album. So no, it’s not “sloppy”, and I think it’s fine. To say that that is not good enough implies that Kirk has done solos are astronomically better. I disagree. I get goosebumps when I hear the solo at the end of “Fade to Black”, but I anticipate the fast midsection and insane soloing in “All Nightmare Long.” I think the solo in “The Unforgiven III” rivals the solo in the original “Unforgiven.” This material ranks amongst their best. It’s better than Kill’em All, The Black Album, Load, Reload, and St. Anger, and it depends on the day of the week as to whether or not it’s a favorite over their classic trio.

That, of course, is all my opinion, but I do know for a fact that if Kirk’s playing on DM is “sloppy”, then he’s been a “sloppy” guitarist his whole career.

Likewise, Lars has never been the greatest drummer in the world, but his drumming on DM is only mediocre if you compare it to Justice. It’s easily as good, if not better, than anything he did on their other albums.

And I just flat-out disagree with those who say that Hetfield’s voice is shot. Hetfield’s all grown up and he’s not going to sound twenty again, but this is his best vocal performance since 1990. So it’s not “gone” if it has, in fact, IMPROVED over the last fifteen years.

Mr. Grim,

Thanks for the facts, friend. Have a good day now.

Gina | 2/19/2009, 4:30 pm EST

hey are u gonna make the game on XBOX?

who cares | 2/19/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Alex | 2/20/2009, 3:57 am EST

Mitch, I said this things I feel. Even though I feel this way about the band I still think they’re 100 times better than all the old and new bands out there.

Metallica are simply the best in the end.

emo`s suck | 2/20/2009, 5:43 am EST

Only shows how Americans are with spelling… always wanting to speak with americans because “they speak english” but non-english speakers actually has a better grasp of the english language (written/spoken)

Indep | 2/20/2009, 6:50 am EST

What a great marketing scheme. Misspell a bands name, create controversy and get free advertising, brilliant!!

that person is a loner | 2/20/2009, 7:15 am EST

the person who found that mistake just needs attention…. that person’s a “loner”

Tommis from Kansas | 2/20/2009, 9:38 am EST

Aw…it doesent matter what the hell they did. There a kick ass rock band. I surprised Lynard Skynard doesnt mispell Skynard…they are hicks from the sticks but they can rock too. I just think this is hallariouse. OH, and the guy who found the mistake, get a life man.

Tommis from Kansas | 2/20/2009, 9:39 am EST

shit, i spelled it wrong…hahahaha.

Larry D. | 2/20/2009, 12:38 pm EST

Those so-called music critics are not intellectual either. Youre talking about one of the greatest rock bands ever and to say that that Lynyrd Skynyrd …might not be the world’s most intellectual rock bands, but at least they can spell their own name.. is an insult. I don’t think you follow through on “YOUR” stupid criticism. You’re probably some little kid with any kind of music background. You should be fired! No wonder Rolling Stone sucks lately, Morons like that work there. and to Tommies in Kansas.. We “hicks” can still kick your ass!

M. Webster | 2/20/2009, 3:08 pm EST

The spelling and grammar in these comments is downright scary. Apparently no one here has ever heard the old proverb, “If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well.”

metallica rawks | 2/20/2009, 9:39 pm EST

ugh crap who gives a flying fck about a lil mispelling its not were gona b playin it and sitin there saying OMG ITS SPELT WRONG THE WORLD IS GOING TO END AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

MetallicaFanForLife | 2/20/2009, 11:34 pm EST

as long as they dont spell metallica wrong im fine

matt | 2/22/2009, 1:12 am EST

honestly who cares, the band is so popular you could spell it lenard skinyard and everyone would know who they are. plus they’ve had their songs on previous guitar heros and their name was spelled right.. who ever was in charge of spelling the names wasn’t doing their job right and didn’t double check or was in a hurry

pantera1 | 2/22/2009, 6:24 pm EST

I AGREE WITH “EMO’S SUCK” WHERE SLIPKNOT AND MACHINE HEAD.

i agree whit SOMEBODY this is just crap

Woody | 2/23/2009, 7:18 pm EST

Who are all these morons making these comments? Can any one of you speak English? Is there a single high-school graduate among you? And who the hell does this Alex think he is? To make such defamatory remarks and then rescind after no more than a slight defensive nudge from another fan is just plain gutless. Alex, I too have been playing guitar for many years and would love to one day become even half as proficient as Kirk. And,I would never be stupid enough to publicly bag the man with the knowledge that I’m nowhere near as good as him. Back off! The guy is a legend.

Unknown | 2/28/2009, 11:16 pm EST

Make a gh game where the people playing can pick their own songs.

Metallica's #1 | 3/1/2009, 1:11 am EST

Blah blah blah, all these bands have an agreement with certain companies (EA and Activision)to be on both games. GH isn’t doing anything wrong. And as for Metallica haters, when Metallica tours why is it that the tickets ell out really fast? Duh did you figure it out yet? Well if you didn’t that’s because they have a HUGE fan base, they’re the best band out there and they kick ass where ever they go!!! I don’t think they sold out to have there own GH game. Would’nt you love to have you’re own game like Metallica, I would. So people lay off Metallica. This will be an awesome game for the TRUE Metallica fans!! ROCK ON METALLICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4EVER!!!!!!

MeTaLlIcA | 3/4/2009, 11:52 pm EST

Okay, I agree with emos’ suck. They should put out a Guitar Hero: Metal, but in the mean time, quit talking shit about Metallica. There’s no point in raging on Metallica just because, they haven’t made a Guitar Hero: Metal.
