Robert Plant & Alison Krauss Working On “Raising Sand” Follow-Up

After winning five Grammys this past weekend, including Album of the Year for Raising Sand, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are already back in the studio with T Bone Burnett working on the follow-up to their platinum-selling LP. Thanks to the huge Grammy night, Raising Sand is on pace to top this week’s sales chart, despite not even being on the Top 200 two weeks ago.

“Alison and Robert have been in the studio for about two weeks and although we haven’t heard any of the music, we’ve been hearing good things from the musicians,” said Rounder Records’ Ken Irwin in an e-mail to Country Standard Time. Burnett recently spoke to Rolling Stone about Plant & Krauss for a story in the next issue (which hits stands next week). “The one thing we certainly can’t do is try and repeat [Raising Sand],” he told us. “That was a moment in time and a beautiful moment, so to try and do that sort of thing again would detract from that.” He adds, “Hopefully we have at least two more records in us.”

It’s kind of hard to be disappointed by news that the winners of the Album of the Year award are recording a follow-up, but this info likely doesn’t sit well with Led Zeppelin fans who were hoping that the group would finally reunite for a full-scale tour once Plant fulfilled his touring obligations with Krauss. A new album probably means another tour, even though Plant said he wouldn’t tour for “at least two years” after his first tour with Krauss ended.

Though many assumed Plant and Krauss would release a live CD/DVD before another album, Irwin said there’s no plan for a DVD at this time. Irwin was also unsure of the new album’s release date: “We set our release dates when we get all the pieces in place and at this point, we don’t have any yet.”

Good for you, Robert. It’s nice to see that he refuses to cave to the pressure of a reunion tour and living in the past. He’s doing the right thing by moving on with his acreer and making excellent music.

Anonymous | 2/13/2009, 2:58 pm EST

He sorta IS living in the past, as he regularly performed Led Zeppelin songs on his tour with Krauss. Granted, the songs were performed with new arrangements, but still…

Anonymous | 2/13/2009, 3:42 pm EST

There are people whining if he doesn’t perform Zeppelin songs, there are people whining if he performs Zeppelin songs. Geez, he can’t just win.

Giovanni | 2/13/2009, 3:55 pm EST

I very disappointed to say the least, that Plant will not be touring with Zeppelin. Also, I am disappointed in the way he handled the situation; first saying he wouldn’t tour for 2 years, now saying he’s going to tour again.

But good for Plant, he’s going down the road less traveled by.

I demand a Honeydrippers reunion!!

You completely missed the point.

ZEP is gone get over it!
Let the man be the artist he is , and just enjoy his talent.

Zeppelin & Honeydrippers are history…deal with it…enjoy the musical legacy you’ve been left with from those eras. Everything that could’ve been created and explored back then was already submitted. Artists grow and evolve – Robert is now creating some of the finest music of his life. The Alison Krauss collaboration is magical and one that needs further exploration. Mr. Plant now joins the elite group of Rock artists who have eclectic multimedia-multigenre careers such as Rock, Country, Blues, Etc. that folks from all walks of life may enjoy. Country music has always been huge in England, and it’s naturally appropriate for him to explore his musical yearnings. RAISING SAND is a great musical statement – I’m on my way to pick my copy up – been putting it off too long and I’ve heard and seen their youtube.com videos for quite some time. The album is as much Rock as it is Country, as it is Blues, as it is Pop, as it is R&B…it’s a full circle of musical delights. Don’t miss out!

I do want to see a Zeppelin tour, but best wishes to Robert and Alison. At least he’s doing something that makes him happy, even if it doesn’t make Zeppelin fans very happy. That being said, this album has grammy written all over it. Even if there is a better album but a band like Radiohead, or Chili Pepper I’m pretty sure they’ll once again go for the sake pick, or Plant and Krauss.

Jim | 2/13/2009, 11:53 pm EST

Very well said, Mike. You will not be sorry for picking up the album. It is beyond excellent. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have

Every song that was sung on raising sand as well as the extras done on the tour including the led zeppelin songs covered ARE from His past .In fact if they write any new songs it will be the 1st time alison won`t be covering someone elses songs, even though she also won`t be writting on her own just as the fact that all her grammys ,but ” 1 ” are due to other singers /songwriters work not some exclusive personal talent or work on her behalf

I am completely addicted to “Raising Sand” Cannot wait for the follow-up. I am hoping this time around, I will get to see them in concert. Congratulations to Robert, Alison, T-Bone and the other wonderful musicians on this record.

Why is the scary Burger King dude holding Grammys with Alison Krauss?

jojo | 2/14/2009, 11:35 am EST

robert is excellent because he expresses his true self in this moment. we would all do well to attempt the same.
going back to the golden zep moments in the 70’s is a nice thought for a moment, trust he and alison to take us somewhere that is golden in the NOW moment.

MotTheWot | 2/15/2009, 5:12 am EST

God help us all, a follow up crap album to a debut crap album. I’m going to watch some concrete set, it will be far more interesting than this. Robert Plant has lost it, what a douchebag.

Mauro, Italy | 2/15/2009, 5:29 am EST

I don’t think Zep are the past, till the end of their life
Plant,JPJ and Page will alweys be the Zep, even if they do others things. People can do new things and can also do things already made without beeing said for this reason they live in the past. Thanks god they are making new music, but thanks god too for the music they made! And why not, I would like to have the opportunity to say “thank you God!” for a new Zep album and a new Zep Tour. This will not exclude other project for them to do.
Please don’t speak about NOW music, or PAST music… WHY GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC! I think we all agree with it… :-)

Chris | 2/15/2009, 8:04 am EST

The fans demand that Plant/Kruass play some led zep songs ! “Battle of evermore” deserves to be out on DVD. Jimmy Page can sit at home while we enjoy this godly duet.

king of tomorrow | 2/15/2009, 9:47 am EST

Robert Plant will not budge until Alison has become the fifth member of LZ. I don´t mind.

thomsen | 2/15/2009, 10:26 am EST

Without John Bonham, it’s not Led Zeppelin.

Samola | 2/15/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Fantastic! I’m really happy for T-Bone, Allison, and Robert…incrdible versions of American roots and other music and maybe that and more to come? I cannot wait! :)

Zeppelin Freaks…I still revere Zep and throw Phyisical Grafitti on from time to time. Page was a studio genious..pretty mediocre live compared to some, but thats typical. There are only a few who can pull off genious both on stage and in studio. Perhaps Clapton…

My feelings anyway and it would be nice if more realized Zep ENDED in 1980. Period. Pages work for the most part has been forced and pretty boring ever since.

Plant is one of the few from his era who has been able to break free from old expectations and move ahead gracefully and artistically. Thank you Mr. Plant and I personally love the interesting new directions you’ve moved in over the last almost 30 years. You are in love with all that is music and your work with Allison and T-Bone is one more wonderful expression of the importance of appreciation for American and World music new and old.

Surf City Sounds Plus | 2/16/2009, 4:31 pm EST

Some of LZ’s best tunes were the acoustic ones, so methinks Mr. Plant hasn’t strayed much from his element. I think that he is still making good music of any kind with others should not be taken for granted. I don’t need to hear “Stairway” one more time at all. FYHDW3! [LOL!] Enjoy!

Jungleland2 | 2/16/2009, 5:50 pm EST

I’d prefer a follow up to Mighty Rearranger instead

Amen to the vote for a follow up to Mighty Rearranger instead. You said it. Killer disc.

norman | 2/19/2009, 1:11 pm EST

Wos I can not wait to hear some more plant kraus version of perhaps towne van zandt or some blues, I saw them live in KC fabulous show. Peace

They had so much fun and showed so much love and entusiasm live it was like sureal. It was truly amazing the crowd was (except for a few Zep maniacs) were subdued and purely enjoyed the music.

Barbara | 3/4/2009, 1:29 pm EST

Okay, first of all, I recently listened to all NINE of Robert’s solo CDs and find a lot of that music is what he and Krauss are doing either reworked or the same. It’s mostly ROBERT’s talent and songwriting that won these Grammy’s. I also don’t get Krauss’ voice? Nothing impressive as far as I’m concerned. Let’s forget about Led Zep reunions for now and concentrate on what SHOULD be happening — Another SOLO TOUR by Robert! Especially great were the Fate of Nations and Dreamland CDs where he collaborated with some of the most amazing musicians on earth! (e.g. the Great Violinist Nigel Kennedy). I would kill to see “Calling to You” LIVE! PLEASE Robert – Enough “Raising Sand” which title ALSO BTW was taken from lyrics from one of Robert’s songs. We gotta somehow make this happen!!!!!

Jodeo | 3/4/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Whatever happened to The Crawling King Snakes and Black Snake Moan?

C’MON, ROBERT!!!

helen | 3/12/2009, 11:46 pm EST

I’d love to see Robert Plant and alison krauss perform in australia.

Tom Hartman | 3/29/2009, 11:32 pm EST

It is amazing that anyone could think Allison Krause is anything less than one of the best female vocalists out there (in her style…she is not a wailer). Amazing pitch, angelic in tone, ask a few studio singers what they think of Krause….

“Mighty Rearranger” followup would be cool, but my introduction to Plant was through “Raising Sand”

Just a thought: Plant was hard rock and went bluegrass for Krauss. The next album, Krauss should go hard rock for Plant – that could be truly amazing if she can pull it off.

James | 10/28/2009, 12:34 pm EST

Is this still in the works?

Thor | 10/28/2009, 9:06 pm EST

“The next album, Krauss should go hard rock for Plant.” Ok, that sounds so good, I’m actually gonna be disapointed if the new album isn’t just that. Just imagine Krauss doing the mighty warrior à la Immigrant Song.
