Peter Gabriel Not Performing At Oscars Out of Protest

This year’s Academy Awards took a big risk by only nominating three songs in the Best Original Song category, and it looks as though it has backfired: Peter Gabriel, who was nominated for “Down To Earth” from Wall-E, will not perform at the ceremony. Gabriel is protesting the producers’ decision to only allow him to perform 65 seconds of the track as part of a medley.

“We were originally hoping to perform,” he said. “We’d assumed, as there are only three nominees, that the songs would be performed in full. But the producers came in to revamp it as audience figures were falling off,” Gabriel said in a video on his Website, “So I’ve now decided to withdraw from the ceremony, but I’ll still go along. I do think it’s a bit unfortunate. I do think songwriters, even though they’re a small part of the filmmaking process… we still work bloody hard and I think deserve a place in the ceremony as well.”

Gabriel is likely the favorite to win the award, having won the Best Song From a Motion Picture trophy at last weekend’s Grammy Awards. The other nominees for Best Song at the Oscars are a pair of Slumdog Millionaire songs, “Jai Ho” and “O Saya,” which features M.I.A. Given that M.I.A. will most likely have given birth to her child by the February 22nd ceremony, her presence at the Oscars isn’t guaranteed either. Thus, the Academy Awards may be faced with the absence of two of three Best Song nominees. We bet they’re wishing they hadn’t snubbed Bruce Springsteen’s “The Wrestler” right about now.

The Oscars have relied on other artists to perform songs in place of the original singer in years past. Think Robin Williams singing “Blame Canada” from that South Park movie. But it’ll be awkward to get a replacement for Gabriel when the former Genesis singer is sitting in the crowd. “So I’m an old fart, and it’s not going to do me any harm to make a little protest. But the ceremony will be fun and I’m looking forward to it,” Gabriel said.

Good for him! What bullshit to cut the noms down to three and then only allow them to perform a minute of their song. Gabriel was the only thing I was looking forward to seeing this year. What a shame.

I completely agree with his reasoning… And it’s definitely messed up, that the songs cannot be performed in full, especially when there’s only 3 nominees in the first place!

But on the other hand, 65 seconds is better than nothing, and he really is blowing an prime opportunity for exposure, especially in North America.

Peter Gabriel still occasionally tours, but his US popularity is not nearly what it once was.

The Oscars, is one of the most highly watched televised events.

A performance on this show, might have helped him recapture some of his shrinking audience who forgot about him, and enable him to play larger venues the next time he tours here again.

It would be SWEET if they got Phil Collins to do his song.

yanks – yawn

It is bullshit – would the academy only vote on nominees after watching a portion of the performances? Wait…don’t aswer that.

Thank You Mr. Gabriel! How can there only be 3 nominees?Playing a minute of a song is like an artist’s portrait without the face.

I would of had Pete OPEN the Oscars. Do a Grammy style thing – then announce a tour or release a multi-media album.

This is just a shock…to my monkey.

(I’ve become a HUGE admirer of Pete without him needing TV in recent years after diggin’ in the dirt a bit more…)

60 seconds on the Oscars could sell a lot of records.
It could bring Gabriel a lot of new fans and make others rediscover his earlier music.
He must have a lot of money.
Springsteen cut his songs short for the Superbowl.

I’m still waiting on that Genesis reunion/Lamb tour.

Waiting, waiting, waiting.

Sandro Mairata | 2/14/2009, 10:06 am EST

This is a typical anti-Genesis members Hollywood thing. I remember back in 1985 when Phil Collins wasn’t allowed to perform Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now). He stayed sitting in the audience with the most awkward expression on his face while Anne Reinking performed his song.

Gadzooka | 2/14/2009, 4:49 pm EST

He should play the song really fast…or maybe he could hum it instead.

saad | 2/15/2009, 12:10 am EST

they should just cut out all the music performances then…the show goes long anyways so u might as well cut some excess especially if not everyone for a category is even represented…

bob pridden | 2/15/2009, 12:57 pm EST

It pisses me off that a piece of total trash, like 2006’s “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp”, gets to be performed at the Academy Awards in full…

…but a genuinely good song, by a living legend, is not given the same treatment.

I love PG! I’m a little bummed he didn’t go along with it. I’d take 65 seconds over nothin’. But they could’ve at least given him 3 minutes! I know he’s edited songs for live performance (for instance, “Steam” on SNL back in ‘91.) Cause “Down to Earth” is a pretty freakin’ long song… just under 6 minutes. So, it would’ve had to be edited anyway.

The Music awards have been pretty lame for many years now. Anyone remember Milli Vanilli – Got a grammy but it was found out that they didn’t even compose the song and even did a lip sync, didn’t even siing on the recording, and what about the year that Metallica lost to Jethro Tull for the best “Metal” album… so whatever…. A total waste of time.

F U Hollywood.

Mr. Music | 2/20/2009, 8:59 pm EST

Whoever thought the creator of The Musical Box, Supper’s Ready, Cinema Show, and other 10+ minute triumphs would take a 60 second gig was out of his mind. One of the other writers had it right, someone should lose his job.

Let’s see, logistics, rehearsals, possible conflicts between artists……for 65 seconds……..nah………who needs it. Put on a freaking recording and be done with it. You’d have to have a colossal ego to want to be on that stage so bad that you would compromise your art that much. Good for him. Life can take many things from you but your self respect can’t be taken, you have to give that away.

George | 2/22/2009, 9:02 am EST

Peter, climb down from that cross and ‘come on down to Earth’. Get over yourself. It’s an award show ABOUT movies. With all that’s going on in our collective worlds, you can’t let people have one night of fun without injecting a protest. Way to go, tool.

Ziggy Cannonball | 2/22/2009, 5:36 pm EST

Peter Gabriel is standing up for his art. The Oscars, and Hollywood today, are about money. Which is a shame because though a few of the Best Picture nominees have some artistic merit, the bulk of the Oscar ceremony is about selling stuff. The Academy Awards ceremony has descended into a ritual of making money by parading the latest batch of Hollywood wannabees before the cameras.

If you want to make a good, artful show, why not let the artists perform? Cut out the Red carpet BS and the Fashion BS. Lose the “new” stars and starlets who can’t even read convincingly from the teleprompters. And bring us the art!!

Sure, Peter Gabriel has been rather outspoken about one cause or another. And I can see the contempt some might feel for someone who is not focusing on making some extra coin. But 60-65 seconds does not properly convey his contribution as one of this year’s nominees.

I hope that when the imposters attempt to perform his 60-65 seconds of stuff, that he does something memorable from his seat in the audience. Maybe miming a noose around his neck…perhaps a flip of the bird…

I thought the performance of “Falling Slowly” (from “Once”) from last year’s Oscars was one of the shining highlights (and a rare moment of earnest purity amongst all the preening and calculating). Jarring to think that had that film come out this year, that performance would not have happened.
