U2 Book Letterman Residency For “No Line on the Horizon” Release Week

David Letterman’s reward for soldiering through that disastrous Joaquin Phoenix interview last night: U2 will perform five consecutive nights on The Late Show, beginning on Monday, March 2nd, the official U2 Website announced today. Coincidentally, U2’s new album No Line on the Horizon hits shelves and digital music services on March 3rd. Imagine that odds of that, releasing a new album and playing a residency on the Letterman show in the same week.

The performances mark the first time ever an artist has played Letterman’s show for five consecutive nights. As we mentioned this morning, the White Stripes did a similar feat in 2003, performing a week-long residency on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

In other U2 news, and this may be just our little conspiracy theory, but there’s a possibility that U2 have changed the cover art for No Line on the Horizon. The original image featured an oceanic photograph by Hiroshi Sugimoto with an equal sign superimposed on top of it. However, the revolving photograph at the front door of U2.com reveals the same image, without the equal sign. Plus, some digital music outlets are featuring the album artwork without the equal sign as well. With our without it, the album cover is still starkly striking, even if it’s not all together original. There are five different editions of No Line being released, so maybe this other cover will appear on a deluxe version.

With the new LP less than three weeks away, make sure you check out our track-by-track preview of No Line on the Horizon and exclusive in-the-studio story on the making of the album:

I think that he is just bored with the sanitised, repressed and uncultured situation of American television and the media per se – Letterman set the philistine tone with an opening joke about Pheonix’s beard, for god’s sake. We should remember the censorship of Bill Hick’s on Letterman – not to mention the destruction of anyone who had an authentic voice – think of Lenny Bruce. I think Phoenix seemed incredibly bored – not to mention offended and perplexed – and went through the motions to fulfill the contract… but he did not play Letterman’s game. I hope he gets his lawyer to sue every news source who confused his obvious authenticity with madness.

Mango | 2/12/2009, 3:30 pm EST

Letterman synonyms……tired, unfunny (totally), stale, washed up, lefty, a$$hole!!!

Such a miscreant dolt…he thinks Pelosi is a BABE!!!!! Guffaw, guffaw!!!!!!

Dave | 2/12/2009, 5:18 pm EST

Why not just give U2 their own network, instead of taking over talk shows for a week at a time?. U2 did the same week long thing on Conan back in `05.It`s also time for the traditional U2 press release which states that “U2`s new CD is going to SAVE the music industry”,and try to convince the public that U2 is still somehow relevant, and not just another 80s nostalgia band trying to string things out for yet another decade.

Suzanne | 2/12/2009, 5:53 pm EST

The people who made the above comments are most likely not educated, especially in music history. U2 is beyond relevant and will be for years beyond us.

Corporatio | 2/12/2009, 5:57 pm EST

Coincidence, ha, ha, ha!!!
Commensalism, maybe.

eightball | 2/12/2009, 6:20 pm EST

letterman is way better than leno. get over it whiners

Joe | 2/12/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Dave, I think that’s an awesome idea. U2 deserves their own network. Pitch it, buddy-boy!!!

Tim | 2/12/2009, 7:44 pm EST

U2 should`ve called their latest CD,No Retirement On The Horizon.Bono will still be limping around on stage when he turns 60, just like Mick Jagger. But U2 performing on Letterman`s show is perfect for them,They just play one 4 minute song each night, then they can sit down and rest, catch their breath, and reach for a heating pad to help soothe all those pesky muscle cramps.

Bill | 2/12/2009, 8:05 pm EST

Tim whatever music you are into I can assure you those bands will not match the relevance, energy, creativity, and overall live performance stamina that is U2. You mock what you do not understand, which I am sure is a considerable list.

Bukowski Thompson | 2/12/2009, 8:07 pm EST

U2 took over a full hour episode of Conan in 2005… not a whole week. However, White stripes did take up a whole week on the show. Ready for the stadium tour and the late night take over.

PoPo | 2/12/2009, 10:47 pm EST

Opinions are like assholes …. Everyone has one. Lighten up for Christ’s sakes .. it’s only U2.

Anonymous | 2/12/2009, 11:27 pm EST

hey,to all the “negative before positive” people.U2 has been making music since 1976…..
No matter how they may or may
not entertain you…they inspire
more than you will ever know.

TheCoz | 2/13/2009, 1:31 am EST

I still can’t get over U2 producing 5 versions of their new album. I guess there’s no recession in Ireland at the moment.

Nmar | 2/13/2009, 7:55 am EST

Cool!!! Can’t wait for No Line! Been waiting for this one for 5 years love U2. Man Phoenix is one weird cat.

Wow, what a tight schedule for U2! They were already part of Award shows like the Grammys (I remember their strong performance of “Get On Your Boots”) and next week they will also perform during the Brits and German Echo Awards. U2 have appeared on TV shows since “All That You Can´t Leave Behind”, which is of course part of the promotion of a new record. They have often been criticized of “promoting themselves”, but all professional artists need promotion to survive in times of merciless competition.

I´ve already noticed that U2.com shows the album cover without any equal sign now. A few weeks back there was much controversy here, because some people accused U2 of having used an almost identical (or at least a very similar) cover as NIN, Chartier & Deupree. Now even the RS doesn´t know how the cover will exactly look like. We´ll see it soon!

deano | 2/13/2009, 4:32 pm EST

I always thought Bono looked like Paul Schaeffer.

STFU bono | 2/13/2009, 4:41 pm EST

watch “hey BONO, please stfu, thanks!” over on YOUTUBE

he really needs to sing more and talk less. bono. ugh.

STFU bono | 2/13/2009, 4:59 pm EST

actually it’s…

“hey bono, stfu, thanks!”

Red | 2/13/2009, 5:13 pm EST

He’s got you talkin ’bout him and his band, don’t he?

Steve | 2/13/2009, 5:50 pm EST

I hear The Ruse will be opening for U2 on Letterman.

Playing songs from Midnight in the City.

Love them.

pt | 2/13/2009, 10:47 pm EST

they should make the cover a holograph and when you tilt it down and look at the water you will see the equal sign…

Mango Loves W | 2/13/2009, 11:49 pm EST

Hey Mango!

Quit calling everyone a lefty and sign-up for the military already.

sum dude` | 2/14/2009, 1:57 am EST

Pam | 2/14/2009, 2:44 am EST

pt, your idea of an holograph is great! The cover would be more different from others (I talked about certain accusations yesterday). And a kind of hidden equal sign would be mysterious and only people who actually LOOK at it would see it.

Rekobeko | 2/14/2009, 5:02 am EST

Back to Pop era U2 with an extremely dull album cover.

Nate | 2/14/2009, 10:28 am EST

Greatest Band Ever….on the Best Late Night Show! I’ll be watching!

Hey sum | 2/14/2009, 11:26 am EST

Go listen to your “band” and get off the jock.

TekunMan | 2/14/2009, 1:38 pm EST

U2 is awesome, can’t wait for the new album and their performance on Dave. Those who hate…take a chill pill!!

deano | 2/14/2009, 8:00 pm EST

What, Dave couldn’t find four other bands to work that week?

Diana | 2/15/2009, 9:36 am EST

Right on boys, I am waiting for the tour so badly.

king of tomorrow | 2/15/2009, 9:42 am EST

I do not watch TV a lot anymore, nevertheless this is an event I will not miss.

mr.ling | 2/15/2009, 11:35 am EST

i hate u2 they suck cox

caleb samson | 2/15/2009, 11:39 am EST

althought i dont perticually like the antics of bono, trying to save the world everyday.

though, i cant say anything bad about the axe man ‘the edge’. The edge has inspired me to write 6 volumes of poetry. his subtle guitar tones inspire me to live a full and brave life.

also the drumming is very good on the joshuia trees album.

alvin | 2/15/2009, 12:29 pm EST

U2 so cool…doing five shows!!!
no retirement on the horizon for these guys..although that can’t be said about springsteen.
he should definelty retire.

Eric C | 2/16/2009, 10:21 am EST

Taste in music is of course highly personal. I have seen virtually every big name band since the 1970’s and finally got to see U2 on their Vertigo tour a few years back. I thought it was one of the best shows I have ever seen.

ladyofthestars@mac.com | 2/16/2009, 4:43 pm EST

Bono is a flashback and I am thinking of
concerts again despite mergers and
price. Any ideas of what his new boots song
is all about? I am getting happy with a cinema verita s of Bono in my photographic mind.

Why not.

Peace Brother Jerome Watkins B | 2/17/2009, 8:25 am EST

I AM the Music Authority, as an Author, well known Rap Artist, Playwright, Poet, & Music Industry Analyst, and “Brutha J”, here has gotten tired of Bono & his antics! . .these guys are just a bunch of Capitalist Pigs, can you dig what Brutha J is sayin here!? Good score for David Letterman, but these guys are just hawkin their new album with no shame.
No better than tht creep Buce Springsteen sellin out to Walmart. Hey y’all, America is tired of all this used up talent, that goes for Billy, Bruce, Elton, and U2 Bono!
& that’s the bottom line cause Peace Brother Jerome says so!!!

Mark | 2/17/2009, 10:19 am EST

rap is crap…now having U2 on letterman for five is alive and exciting…only a fool would put U2 and springsteen in the same sentence…one is cool the other a fool.

Hypocrite | 2/17/2009, 11:02 am EST

“Peace Brutha J” was hawking his album on other blogs on this site. What a hypocritical asshole.

Owensy | 2/17/2009, 8:11 pm EST

Peacemuusta V | 2/19/2009, 12:49 pm EST

Music Authority “Peace Brutha J” needs Billy, Bruce, Elton, and U2 Bono to promote his Art. Awesome.

DICKTUCKER | 3/3/2009, 7:16 am EST

U2 STINKS AS BAD AS BONO’S BREATH..

Brady | 3/4/2009, 8:38 am EST

U2 is better than the rest. As soon as U2 plays their 1st note at the grammy’s it makes the rest of the muscial acts look like 1st time amateurs.

paiste | 3/4/2009, 8:42 am EST

Go listen to “Magnificant” on this new album … Gives me chills just like many U2 songs.

Maad | 3/27/2009, 6:27 am EST
