Your Grammy Highlights: Jennifer Hudson Returns, Coldplay Soar

Amid fizzling sales and dwindling business, the music industry responded with a Grammy show thick on collaborations, stirring performances and once in a lifetime moments.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss took home the most hardware, but the night’s performances provided the bulk of this morning’s Grammy water cooler conversation. If you need a refresher, you can find images from these unforgettable moments in our Grammy gallery or skim through some of our favorite moments:

• U2 show off their new “Boots” — The band jumpstarted the Grammy telecast with the first single from No Line on the Horizon.

• Jennifer Hudson’s triumphant return — After a year of unimaginable personal tragedy, Hudson returned to the Grammy stage for a breathtaking performance of “You Pulled Me Through.” It’s hard to imagine there was a dry eye in the house (or among the millions of viewers at home).

• McCartney and Grohl revisit the Beatles — The night before the 45th anniversary of the Beatles debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, McCartney and Grohl showed that “I Saw Her Standing There” can still electrify a room.

• Coldplay and Jay-Z — An intimate performance of “Lost” took on a new urgency when Jay hit the stage.

• Radiohead & the USC marching band — On a night full of remarkable guest spots, Radiohead went above and beyond recruiting the USC Trojan Marching Band for a rousing performance of “15 Step.”

• J.T. & the Reverend — A last minute add to the Grammy lineup, this rousing rendition of “Let’s Stay Together” — which also packed in Boyz II Men and Keith Urban — simply soared.

• Taylor Swift & Miley Cyrus — A stool, a guitar and a little help from a friend was all Swift needed to turned the Staples Center into a cozy little coffee bar with her deeply personal performance.

• Neil Diamond gets “Sweet” — Hail the man who can get an arena full of industry cynics to chat “bah bah bah” during the undeniably infectious “Sweet Caroline.”

• Kanye and Estelle remind us that less is more — The night’s “Rap Pack” summit certainly boasted star power, but Kanye’s performance with Estelle through the sultry groove of “American Boy” was arguably tighter, brighter and more stylish.

• Adele & Sugarland — With “Stay” and “Chasing Pavements,” British soul met Nashville twang on the common ground of yearning and heartbreak.

• New Orleans rising — Whoever decided to put Lil Wayne, Allen Toussaint, Terence Blanchard and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on the stage at the same time deserves a medal.

• The Jonas Bros. & Stevie Wonder — We’re still trying to wrap our heads around this one.

So what do you think? What was the highlight of this year’s Grammy Awards?

did you guys actually watch the same show i watched???

T. | 2/9/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Rap is crap.

mAki | 2/9/2009, 12:15 pm EST

Kanye’s hair was the highlight of the night, hands down.

The Grammy’s in all its hype and glory saddend the soul/R&B music lover that I am. For when Jennifer Hudson won best R&B album of the year I fell ill. Though my heart goes out to Jennifer Hudson and her entire family and I wish her best, it doesnt change the fact that her debut album was garbage. I believe deeply that Jennifer Hudson is a great talent, but to beat out such artists as Raphael Saadiq and Jazmine Sullivan is a crime. Also I strongly feel that black music in general lacked this year, for Robert Plant, Coldplay and Adele has become my British Saviors. Cause if it wasn’t for them I would have just competely given up on music. I love soul/R&B and Rap music, but lets be honest the Grammy’s were not a good night for black musicians. Though I would proudly say that in Jazz/Blues black musicians still rule. Every so-called R&B singer ( besides Neyo, Jazmine Sullivan,Raphael Saadiq) should take a good ear to the music they are making or just move to England.

jungleland2 | 2/9/2009, 12:27 pm EST

It was old people vs. young people…very strange. The legends were…legendary, the new artists looked like deer in headlights. The rappers were…just not for me… (just don’t dig Jay Z or Kanye) TI is ok and Ne-yo is ok, Lil Wayne is crap.

I was hoping Sir.Paul was going to do something from his new CD

Did Robert Plant leave his suit at the cleaners? Nice Haynes Beefy-T dude.

I like his CD, but it’s sooo mellow, hard to really get into it. I liked Mighty Rearanger much better)

Bruce and Metallica won awards for ROCK MUSIC…and were not announced in the telecast.

REM, Pretenders…great records, no Grammy noms ;(

U2 looked old (they are old)
Where were the other 3 members of Radiohead?

Why does Coldplay look like Adam & The Ants?

Highlight for me had to be the Bo Didley tribute. Buddy Guy is the best living guitar player.

BrileyStyle | 2/9/2009, 12:27 pm EST

Radiohead’s performance was #1

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 12:30 pm EST

I love music, I don’t care what type, genere, sound, etc…just as long as its good music I don’t care. But when Jennifer Hudson win a Grammy for best R&B album of the year my heart just breaks, for that album was 100% garbge. Though my heart and prayers go out to Jennifer Hudson and her entire family and I strongly feel that Jennifer is a great talent, its just her album was not the best R&B album of the year. In all honesty if it wasn’t for my British Saviors that I’ve found in Robert Plant, Coldplay and Adele chances are I would have just competley given up on music. And though Lil’Wayne kept the rap game on lock, I must confess that this year Grammy’s was an all around disappointment for black musicians. But none the less we still rule Jazz and the most important Blues, but none the less the average black man or woman doesn’t listen too Jazz or Blues. Every black musician should take this year Grammy’s as a lesson to make and proudce better albums, hell if they have to then they should move to England. I wonder what ever happend to the days of Lauryn Hill ( remmeber her she won 5 Grammy’s in one night and her music earned each and every one) Still, I give my cheers to a few deserving black musicians. To Jazmine Sullivan, Raphael Saadiq, Al Green and Neyo please contiune making music not hits.

nathan | 2/9/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Radiohead was the highlight of the night, Plant and Krauss winning album of the year the lowlight.

Brian | 2/9/2009, 12:33 pm EST

Rolling Stone is a rubber stamp. I am embarrassed for you. Sickened. RS has the same brain-eating disease that afflicts the music business.

God save the queen | 2/9/2009, 12:34 pm EST

Radiohead proved that English is best. I thank you

Jordan | 2/9/2009, 12:34 pm EST

My favorite highlight is that BLINK-182 IS BACK!!! i’m so excited to see them in concert this summer and to get their new album!!

SUMMER 09

Mallory | 2/9/2009, 12:35 pm EST

Kanye’s hair was good. Seeing Plant and Krauss as the darlings of the Grammy’s was nice. Plant deserves it and Allison’s an angel. Would’ve like to see Radiohead win more. I think it deserved Album of the Year simply for what the release did to the industry. Props to Radiohead. Props to the Krauss/Plant duo. And Coldplay? Love that album. Good for them. MIA and her heinous outfit make me love her 10x more. What a crazy lady. Looked like a bug. Props to Mayer for best male rock vocal performance. Gravity is an amazing song. The 30 yr old beat out the tried and true. I don’t know if that’s saying something or if its a kick in the pants for Sir Paul, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen and co.

Hopper | 2/9/2009, 12:45 pm EST

Radiohead was the only reason I watched, and they didn’t disappoint. The rest of the Grammys was utter garbage.

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Although not on camera, I am so excited that The Mars Volta won a Grammy… Well deserved.

Mallory | 2/9/2009, 12:48 pm EST

Sara B. got jipped.

best in years | 2/9/2009, 12:49 pm EST

I thought it was great! Much better than in prior years. It felt like a long televised multi-starred concert. I didn’t even notice the awards, everybody was very brief in the acceptance speech. Jennifer Hudson’s performance was breathtaking. Kanye’s and Estelle’s American Boy was one of the highlights. Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, and Adele and Sugarland delivered great collaborations!! Thumbs UP for the Grammy this year!

Jesse | 2/9/2009, 1:06 pm EST

The credits at the end was the best part of the show..The Grammy’s are a f#ucking joke…

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 1:14 pm EST

is it m or was Whitney a little ‘off’ in a bit of head space….????

omg where's Britney!! | 2/9/2009, 1:17 pm EST

YAWWWWWNNNN!!!! Who cares? I didn’t watch the Grammy’s. As everyone knows those awards don’t mean shit.

anonymous | 2/9/2009, 1:22 pm EST

Radiohead was great, but why follow in the footsteps of Fleetwood Mac? Thought Jonas Bros (lyric sheet anyone?) Swift & Cyrus stunk (what’s pitch?). Bo Diddley tribute was my highlight, followed by Plant & Krause. Joe Satriani’s gotta be a happy guy today.

kitty | 2/9/2009, 1:28 pm EST

The fact that Gwyneth Paltrow introduced Radiohead cracked me up. Not only does her husband have a huge man-crush on RH, but Thom played Gwyneth’s severed head in a box for their 15 Step “mini video” based on the ending of Se7en.

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 1:32 pm EST

This just in: rap is still crap.

Grammys Disgrace | 2/9/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Shame on the Grammys. How they did not include Leroi Moore, sax player and founding member of Dave Matthews Band. He won a grammy for godsake…shame shame SHAME on you

keruzam | 2/9/2009, 1:33 pm EST

Jonas brothers on the same stage with Stevie Wonder — whoever staged this overrates the viewing public’s ability to recognize the satirical. And by the way, it wasn’t funny — just demeaning to one of music’s greats and downright mean to three kids who have obviously been convinced by someone that they can actually play instruments and sing on key. Someday, maybe even soon, the three brothers will watch a replay of this performance and be too embarrassed to leave the house. Stevie should be just as embarrassed letting himself be used for that sick (original definition) trick.

Bill Cooper | 2/9/2009, 1:34 pm EST

I thought U2 was brilliant, all of the little bands they have seeded over the years (Radiohead, Coldplay)…. 2009 – the year of U2!

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 1:39 pm EST

And the best performance of the night goes to Kid Rock…and no mention? Are you kidding me!!

Yo | 2/9/2009, 1:50 pm EST

U2 and Radiohead were the highlights. Coldplay, not so much…

Steve | 2/9/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Blink 182 reunion. It was the only reason I watched.

The Grammys are too long and far too boring.

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 1:55 pm EST

am i wrong or is miley cyrus both tone deaf and self-centered? goodbye grammys — robert plant was right it’s a sell-out, but wrong in it’s a good way to spend a sunday afternoon. the good moments weren’t worth the wait. i’ve watched many grammy awards shows, but will skip them in the future. maybe sit down with some headphones and try to decipher some rap lyrics. nah.

Sherry | 2/9/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Loved U2 – they really are in a class by themselves.
And Stevie Wonder needs to be given a better presentation than the Jonas Bros. The younger generation needs to be able to know what a genius he is.

Thompson | 2/9/2009, 2:03 pm EST

U2

larry | 2/9/2009, 2:03 pm EST

I think the worst scene of the show was some kids jumping and hopping around lke they were teasing a singing blind man.

Craig | 2/9/2009, 2:04 pm EST

Why didn’t the Hold Steady win any awards. Popular music sucks.

petey poo | 2/9/2009, 2:09 pm EST

garbage, every bit

Sherry | 2/9/2009, 2:09 pm EST

PS – Whitney Houston, you are not the Queen of England; you are a drug addicted former pretty good singer who is now a pitiful wreck. Go away until your ‘comeback’ album comes out and proves you’ve still got chops.

yeah no yeah | 2/9/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Radiohead was sweet. Also Al Green and Paul McC.

yeah no yeah | 2/9/2009, 2:13 pm EST

Anonymous down at the bottom. Please don’t separate yourself from us. Musicians are simply Musicians regardless of what race you are it doesn’t change a thing. The sound is what ultimately what matters.

mack | 2/9/2009, 2:15 pm EST

RADIOHEAD … Duh!

T | 2/9/2009, 2:19 pm EST

Big ups to Kid Rock for his shout out to the memory of Billy Powell..
If he didn’t mention it, the grammys wouldnt have. They ommitted him from the “encore” segment where they showed all the artists that passed on since last year…. thanks kid.

Lux Interior and Ron Asheton were also ommitted..thats total BS.

bigjokk | 2/9/2009, 2:20 pm EST

loved coldplay

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 2:21 pm EST

Hey, glad to hear I’m not the only one who can’t figure out what most rappers are saying. I would actually like to hear what they have to say — after all didn’t rap originate as a vehicle for saying things that noone else seemed to be saying? It certainly doesn’t strike me as all about the music, since so many rappers don’t sing or play. I’d listen if I didn’t have to work so hard to understand.

ElJayVee | 2/9/2009, 2:25 pm EST

As a U2 fan, it pains me to say that I enjoyed Radiohead’s performance better than theirs. Not to say U2 wasn’t good, but was there something wrong with the sound mix? Miley & Taylor and Jo-Bros with Stevie were not the highlights for me.

James | 2/9/2009, 2:30 pm EST

U2 and Radiohead brought it. The rest was crap.
I can’t wait to get “No Line on the Horizon” in my hands (ears).

HisPrinceMichael | 2/9/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Boycott, the Scammys.

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 2:37 pm EST

Never paid much attention to Justin Timberlake, just thought he was another bigheaded boybander. My apologies, sir, you definitely have a voice. I was also impressed by the respect you gave Al Green. Too bad the Reverend didn’t have time to warm up those old vocal chords, we only got a glimpse of the power that is obviously still there.

VA in KY | 2/9/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Loved Dave Grohl on the drums for Sir John. Dave Rocks no matter what he’s doing.

Austin | 2/9/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Blink-182……fuck yeah

SATAN | 2/9/2009, 2:54 pm EST

Blink is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Swingline | 2/9/2009, 2:56 pm EST

Did not understanding the vocals keep anybody from listening to James Brown? Might have been nice to know in some cases, but it probably wouldn’t have sounded so good.
People with the same set of ears that don’t listen to metal or hardcore probably don’t understand what those guys are saying either.

Victory430 | 2/9/2009, 3:02 pm EST

U2 officially sucks (mascara and all), while Radiohead gave The Extraordinary “Fuck You” to a Goddamn, delusional, self-important indusrty too greedy to realize that any-form of Music downloading should be emabraced and Celebrated.

Victory430 | 2/9/2009, 3:06 pm EST

U2 officially suck (mascara and all), while Radiohead gave The Extraordinary “Fuck You” to a Goddamn, delusional, self-important industry to greedy to realize that any-form of Music downloading should be embraced and Celebrated.

The Majority | 2/9/2009, 3:08 pm EST

U2 rocked the show…looks like stadium shows for the tour.

raisedlefteyebrow | 2/9/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Radiohead & 15 step!!! U2 pretty much sucked and Coldplay was inane as ever. I’m still recovering from the whiplash I got when Jay-Z took the stage with Chris Martin. Lol to all the people who said Lil Wayne would win album of the year.

J. | 2/9/2009, 3:10 pm EST

U2 was good. Radiohead was stellar. The rest felt flat and distant. The sound mix was a joke.

Finally, please do us all a favor and pull the plug on all that rap shit. That is not music….it is garbage “performed” by talentless losers.

Adguy | 2/9/2009, 3:23 pm EST

U2 once again has brought it. Coldplay truly is limestone, as Chris Martin put it.

nyc | 2/9/2009, 3:35 pm EST

I’m a huge U2 fan and I thought they stunk. bono looked awkward with the way he moved on stage and the song is just not that great. They can do better. Radiohead was awesome and so was coldplay.

lucky | 2/9/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Taylor swift rocked that stage… and she did not need flashy lights or crazy props… and since when did Miley learn to sing… she was great last night i like her now… before it was all Britney mouthing but now shes all soulful…

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 3:40 pm EST

Bono could barely walk in those ridiculous platform boots. He looked like a little boy trying on his daddy’s shoes.

Bono you’re short. So what? You’re not fooling anyone with those lifts.

11 | 2/9/2009, 3:40 pm EST

to j and anonymous… just in case u didnt see the grammy’s… rap runs shit!! dont be mad because the shit u like took a backseat.. haha Swagger like us performance was great because all four giants in the game on the same stage was great… lost was a good performance and radiohead performance was great!!! HIP HOP RUNS THINGS!!

iggy stardust | 2/9/2009, 3:42 pm EST

The duets were an inspired idea, get music back to where it belongs, fun, some creativity, something unexpected. Having said that, the Beatles influence on the whole music industry and everything that has followed is undiminished. What Mac did with one old tune rocked harder and showed more emotion ( with the exception of Jennifer H) than the rest of the show combined.

Jonathon | 2/9/2009, 3:55 pm EST

Radiohead was great Didn’t really see anything else…not interested. It’s cool to see Thom yorke do something interesting like that, and not really worry about how it would come across. Can always trust them

TeddyB | 2/9/2009, 4:05 pm EST

Radiohead was the definite highlight for me. Outstanding, although I do agree with whoever asked where the other 3 members were…oh well, it didn’t matter. Their transformation of “15 Step” was amazing.

U2 were just okay. Maybe they are working out the rust and once the tour starts “Boots” will come across better live. Ditto Coldplay, they are competent musicians, but performance would have been totally bland without the assist from Jay-Z.

Thought that the Lil Wayne, Robin Thicke and Allen Toussaint and JT/Al Green/BoyzIIMen/Keith Urban combos were impressive in their own right.

Lowlights…definite ly the Jonas Brothers embarrassing Stevie Wonder and Miley Cyrus’ tone deaf reading of Taylor Swift’s tune. Was it just me or did Swift look really pissed when the song was over?

K. Watts | 2/9/2009, 4:26 pm EST

1. Radiohead
2. Bo Didley
2. Kraus/Plant
3. Estelle/Kanye
4. M.I.A.
5. Coldplay/Jay-Z

I can’t tell if Kid Rock is workin for the UN or if he’s polishing his Vegas act…

Embarrassed | 2/9/2009, 4:31 pm EST

Pop music continues to get worse and worse every year. Rap runs shit someone said.. that’s fine if it runs the drug market and the gangs but IT’S NOT MUSIC.

JRW | 2/9/2009, 4:32 pm EST

The Grammy’s this year were a disappointment. I feel like only bands that can break into the top 40 or are featured in some VH1 or MTV’s “upcoming artists” or “artists you should check out” TV spots can get a nod at the Grammys. I understand that bands like No Age, Cut/Copy, Portishead, Fuck Buttons or Deerhunter aren’t going to win a Grammy for anything in the best album category. But I was disappointed that some better known bands like Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, or TV on the Radio weren’t recognized for their great albums this past year. I’m mad that Rolling Stone compared Miley Cyrus’ and Taylor Swift’s performance to being in an imtimate coffee bar. It was flat out horrible. I’m tired of people praising these young pop stars of being talented musicians. Both of these girls can not sing! (this includes Katy Perry as well) I thought that the Radiohead and Kanye West/Estelle performances were both pretty good and the highlights of my Grammy watching experience.

getthedoggie | 2/9/2009, 4:45 pm EST

U2 fan here – I missed their performance but the comments aren’t encouraging(’Boots’ isn’t a very good song anyway); I tried to give Jonas boys a break but they stunk; they will be done tomorrow. Despite being among the planet’s biggest names, Miley and Taylor Swift sounded like tone deaf amateurs. On the positive side I thought Timberlake and Al Green did a great job ..

jj | 2/9/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Katy Perry was 100% fresh air to the boring show. She knows how to ROCK EEET!

radiohead | 2/9/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Radiohead were the only real musicians performing. U2 was ok. The rest was trash. Where the freak were Gn’R!?

TJ | 2/9/2009, 5:02 pm EST

Hey 11,

Oh yeah, rap is the best. A bunch of worthless gang bangers mumbling incoherent lyrics over the stolen sample of someone’s else work. Yup, that’s some pretty amazing stuff.

Keep on enjoying that noise. I’ll still with real music.

kb | 2/9/2009, 5:32 pm EST

Radiohead once again proved that they are on another level than the rest of the Grammy artists! They should have won album of the year!

J | 2/9/2009, 5:45 pm EST

I’m a U2 fan, song weak, performance weak. Radiohead Ruled the night. Blink…who cares.

Shaun Shakes | 2/9/2009, 5:48 pm EST

Here’s my take:

The Grammy’s are desperately trying to win back viewers it has lost through the years. And they think they can do that by nominating Tha Carter 3 for album of the year and loads of other Lil Wayne crap because of the hype for him in ‘08. Other than the Rap performances (Except Jay-Z w/ Coldplay) stunk too. It just isn’t music to MY ears. Aside from those 2 factors, I was pleased with the performances and winners this year. Adele is quirky and talented. Taylor Swift & Miley sounded tone deaf which further proves Miley Cyrus can not sing.
Stevie Wonder with Jonas Bros. was fun and cute and totally G-rated cheese for the kiddies, but still managed to be a good collaboration for the 5 minutes or so it went on for. My highlight was def Coldplay’s nice rendition of Lost and Viva la Vida. Radiohead came in right behind with 15 Step and Jennifer Hudson gave me chills and I even got teary-eyed for a moment.
Overall I commend the Grammys for trying to reach over many genres to put on a good show.

U2 opened and honestly Bono just didn’t have it last night.

GRAMMYS ARE A SHAM | 2/9/2009, 5:57 pm EST

Shame on the Grammys. How they did not include Leroi Moore, sax player and founding member of Dave Matthews Band. He won a grammy for godsake…shame shame SHAME on you

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 6:20 pm EST

I enjoyed the “Swagger like Us” Performance. It was actually funny to see M.I.A all pregnant in such a ridiculous costume. Plus the rap lyrics were good. Don’t hate on rap. We don’t hate on most Rock which sounds like noise.

Get a skillful ear and listen to lyrics. lol.

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 6:30 pm EST

To repeat: rap is a steaming pile of crap.

sunny | 2/9/2009, 6:33 pm EST

McCartney/Grohl was my favorite performance. The Jonas Brothers with Stevie Wonder, on the other hand, was an absolute abomination. That song is a classic, and they slaughtered it. What an embarrassment. I felt bad for Stevie

J. | 2/9/2009, 6:36 pm EST

Rap is a pile of bile.

Hey, now I’m bustin’ phat rhymes. That now makes me more talented than all the other ganstas out there. Recognize, bee-atches.

Runmad | 2/9/2009, 6:36 pm EST

Radiohead.
Radiohead.
Ra diohead. The rest was silence.

Oh, and it’s gratifying to know that in Radiohead vs. Recording Industry, it’s all Radiohead:”In Rainbows”. So award your Album of the Year to anyone at all, it doesn’t matter. It’s Radiohead’s party.

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 6:42 pm EST

The Mars Volta came in and pounded Disturbed,
Rob Zombie, and Motley Crue in the ass. Never thought that a Grammy would go to actual talent. Oh and Sir Paul’s performance=excellence Dave Grohls had a constant look of “Holy shit I’m playing with Paul McCartney.”

Modartcomm | 2/9/2009, 6:43 pm EST

Kanye and Estelle looked so hot that I wanted to f**k them both.

Rex | 2/9/2009, 6:46 pm EST

U2 and Bono brought it. Unfortunately it was like a sound check for the show, and they didnt have the sound right out of the gate. Bono “got on his boots”. It was a great rock song/performance piece. Welcome back to ZOO TV, y’all. The song is about America. “You dont know how beautiful you are.”

the real TC | 2/9/2009, 7:11 pm EST

Record of the Year – Please Read The Letter? not.
I can live with Raising Sand as album of the year i suppose…but Viva la Vida and In Rainbows deserve it equally.
And i don’t really think of Viva la Vida as a “rock” album either.
The Grammys are a way to ADVERTISE PRODUCT. They cram as many popular artists as possible into 3 1/2 hours. Hell….they don’t even BOTHER with classical or jazz any more.

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 7:30 pm EST

Breaking news! Rap will always be 100% crap.

Sugga Hill Gang | 2/9/2009, 7:58 pm EST

Any rap song can be manufatured by simply including any of the following devices:
-refer to yourself in 3rd person
-explain how much $$$ you make
-exaggerate how big your dick is
-recognize how drug use has made you what you are today
-showcase how many beeches you can nail in a single session
-remind everyone how much comtempt you have for society
-have i already mentioned the $$$ thing?
-display your amazing knowledge of mixed drinks
-Finally, under NO circumstances should you create your own music–just use someone elses!

Tommy | 2/9/2009, 8:21 pm EST

Good to see U2 is back!!!

Bill | 2/9/2009, 8:22 pm EST

Missing LeRoi Moore from the memorial was a bad overlook and an absolute shame.

Stan | 2/9/2009, 8:24 pm EST

I don’t know who thought Miley was tone def, But fortunatly for me I haven’t destroyed my hearing with loud rock music over the years. I thought they sounded great.

Denzel | 2/9/2009, 8:27 pm EST

What is it with the grammies these days…is it trying to be one of the BET favorites.
U2 started the show well. Al Green looked good. Neil Diamond was a classic. Even that young Swift girl wasn’t bad.

Hello | 2/9/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Radiohead should thank MIA for been pregnant, otherwise she will kick their a***.

Best album of the year: KALA and TV on the Radio.

Jon H. | 2/9/2009, 8:42 pm EST

Not mentioning LeRoi Moore in the memorial showed bad taste, that said, I am a big Radiohead fan. In Rainbows was by far the album of the year. I was glad to see that they won best alternative album but every time they have been nominated in that catogory they have won. It’s way past due to start considering them for best of the best.

Joe Be | 2/9/2009, 9:35 pm EST

Dave Grohl played like he was living a dream. He should be Macca’s drummer. That song was electrifying. Paul was on fire. I was hoping for a Fireman track, but this punked up version blazed.

Radiohead did throw the finger at the industry. The marching band was both evocative and hilarious.

I liked the first part of Coldplay’s set w/ Jay Z, but after that, those stage moves just looked so awkward. Good song though. The greats steal. On second thought, maybe they didn’t really steal that song after all. Stranger coincidences exist.

U2 had seen better days.

MIA had me on the edge of my seat. I’m glad she didn’t give birth at that moment. As far as the song/performance, I’m reduced to using the snarky/hipster term “meh”.

All in all, a better than average show, and for the Grammy’s, that’s saying something.

One more thing: Hip Hop/Rap is music -thank you.

DeadHorse | 2/9/2009, 9:43 pm EST

I cannot believe that very few if any have mentioned how bad the show sounded on tv. I was thinking at one point that the show must be produced by Brendan O’Brien…you know, music drowning out the vocals.

Dj al | 2/9/2009, 9:58 pm EST

pumped for mars volta, wayne. how ne yo is sadiq lost to hudson is beyond me and almost made me cry….. there have been flukes before, but rnb had its best year in 08 then in my entire 17 year liftime and they give the award to hudson, who decied the robert plant album was good? it sounds like it was recorded in a week, way better the 90 percent of music but no comparison to viva la vida, in rainbow, or carter 3. im just pissed now. justin timberlake will always be my hero.

anonymous | 2/9/2009, 10:05 pm EST

rap showed it’s true inferiority – it took four of the genre’s superstars just to get through 1 song

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 10:29 pm EST

Inferiority???
That was the best part of the Grammys. Without them, the Grammys would’ve suffered another low rating because it’s a boring show. Besides, last time I checked a rapper sold the most in the U.S. If that doesn’t prove a lack of interest in other genres than I don’t know what does.

Me | 2/9/2009, 10:43 pm EST

I actually think that Coldplay sucked. The “Lost” section of their performance was good. But Martin just doesn’t know how to exorcise the demon of restlessness onstage! He begins to move so awkwardly and jump around so clumsily that he loses his voice and in the end sounds like crap. “Viva la Vida” is a fine song. But the live rendition yesterday sucked … and I hate that sh*t. It’s not the first time that Martin makes a good song suck live.

Radiohead were gold. Whitney looked and sounded like she’d ingested 4 or 5 Tylenol PMs. Justin and Al Green and Boyz II Men was a hideous clusterf*ck. M.I.A. looked cute pregnant, actually. Her tits are HUGE now. Jennifer Hudson ruled. Paul ruled.

ILLmatic10 | 2/9/2009, 10:54 pm EST

Does anyone else realize how much hip-hop straight up represented on the grammys. They completely killed it, from Kanye with Estelle, to the “Rap Pack” with MIA, TI with Justin Timberlake, and finally Lil Wayne unbelievable performance. Hip-Hop showed up with the creme-de-la-creme of the genre and blew everyone else completely out of the water.

SWAGGER ON A HUNDRED THOUSAND TRILLION

Anonymous | 2/9/2009, 11:04 pm EST

When will you white boys get over your rap hatred? You managed to steal rock and destroy disco but rap aint going no where. As long as black youth exists, rap will exists.

carlo | 2/9/2009, 11:11 pm EST

where was christina aguilera? the grammys should invite her to perform every year.

lmvalle | 2/9/2009, 11:20 pm EST

Hudson’s performance really was amazing. Boy I thought I was about to get into service – and for those who know what I’m talking about that is a GREAT thing. Very cathartic.

MIA just made pregnant mothers the sexiest of the year. That outfit was something else.

Easy Decision | 2/9/2009, 11:24 pm EST

Radiohead-100%. I’m writing this the night after and it is the only thing I can remember. That says enough.

Bryan | 2/9/2009, 11:25 pm EST

U2 performing what sounds to be another hit, McCartney & Grohl, showing that the ex Beatle can still rock the house, and the Four Tops being honored with the performance by Duke Fakir, Jamie Foxx, Smokey Robinson and Ne-Yo was a great way to show today’s kids what real music is all about

Slim | 2/9/2009, 11:30 pm EST

Come on. You didn’t even mention The Bo Diddley tribute R.S. That was my highlight, seeing some great guitarists pay tribute to one of the founding fathers of rock and roll.

lostaswell | 2/9/2009, 11:40 pm EST

i thought coldplay was good overall, jonas brothers are the usual crap. one of them said “show us what you got stevie!” ha. “swagger like us” is still weak without jay-z. he should have won best rap album. or lupe. my life will be complete when aesop rock wins it. Radiohead tooook the show.

Nat | 2/9/2009, 11:40 pm EST

They failed to mention LeRoi Moore during the tribute portion. Whoever is in charge of that is an idiot and should be fired.

Brian Gallagher | 2/9/2009, 11:56 pm EST

I try to like rap but cannot wrap my head around it. Those 4 dudes rapping was like watchin the View when they talk over each other. My whole musical sense is reppeled at rap, sorry. I love music not yelling over someone else`s music about my genitals.

:D iego47 | 2/10/2009, 2:37 am EST

Over the last several weeks I forced myself to listen to the nominated rap to see if there was anything there that stood out but I couldn’t find anything except with MIA and maybe JayZ. I just don’t get it. It’s amazing what Robert Plant could do after so many years. I’m not a big fan of blue grass either but at least that album has real creativity and passion in it. My favorite albums last year were Viva and Rainbows so I was disspointed they didn’t win but better to Plant/Kraus than Wayne. U2/Killers should own next year’s rock categories as long as Kraus don’t put out any new music. She is an absolute Grammy favorite. *LET ME IN THE SOUND*

marcovivio | 2/10/2009, 2:57 am EST

I agree with deadhorse — the sound on the show was awful — and whoever was controlling the soundboard was way off–bringing up vocals late— and cutting off the intros to guitar solos during the Bo Diddley segment — beyond belief — they should be fired

lolo | 2/10/2009, 3:57 am EST

why did jennifer hudson win? Her album is just crap she has a nice voive but in think she must stick to acting. Kanye, Wayne, TI, Jay Z and that pregnant woman who talks on her songs and we call it rapping all sucked. I do remember the Lauryn Hill days miss that woman.

Istabraq | 2/10/2009, 4:11 am EST

U2 and Radiohead were pretty sensational. Real art-rock performances full of risk that mark them out as the world’s premiere music acts.

(Coldplay need not apply. Perenially inoffensive and one of the most acute cases in modern music of ambition exceeding talent but I suppose if you can get away with it …)

The sound mix that CBS saw fit to bedevil these artists with was a bit like inviting Picasso and Van Gogh to exhibit at your gallery where there’s no proper light and asking those who would wish to view their to use flashlights instead.

Peter | 2/10/2009, 6:40 am EST

Is it me or was Whitney once again on crack? lol.

U2, Radiohead, & Macca & Grohl top the list in my book for best performances this year. What the hell was Stevie thinking playing with the Jonas Brothers? The JB’s are a joke. I like to think of them as actors cause everyone knows they’re not real artists.

Katy Perry was absolutely horrible. No one will remember her in 20 years. Sorry Katy.

As for the wanna be rat pack featuring M.I.A. I thought it was well, boring. I like the M.I.A. records but having all those dudes on stage pretending to be the sh&*! was dumb. Jay-Z’s verse was the best. Kanye and the rest sucked…someone needs to tell them to come up with some fresh new sound and not bite the 80’s.

Overall..I liked this Grammy show better than last year. Just my opinion.

chris | 2/10/2009, 7:24 am EST

blink 182 together again!!

JRW | 2/10/2009, 8:39 am EST

So Taylor Swift has had the number 1 album for weeks? She has this thin little voice. She can’t sing!! And people buy this stuff? Rap remains crap. It just ain’t music. Dave Growl and Macca were electrifying together; really great; a particular highlight for me. They seem to have this bromance thing happening. Both Bono and Chris Martin moved around the stage way too much trying for some extra drama or something. Just stand still once in a while and sing! Just some thoughts.

AJ | 2/10/2009, 8:41 am EST

i thought Carrie Underwood sounded more rock than Cold Play. She looked and sounded great. Best performance of the night!!!!!

bruH | 2/10/2009, 10:06 am EST

I disagree with a lot of things that been said up there.
I don’t know anything about music, I just love to hear it.
In my point of view, JoBros and Stevie Wonder were amazing, I rather see the better side of the things. I think is ridiculous we’re here just telling how horrible it was, as long as it wasn’t horrible at all, Joe shows us a different voice in Superstition, and I think it was really aewsome. Nick forget the lyrics, but who cares? He was excited ’bout sing with Stevie.
Miley and Taylor. Come on! It was really good! Taylor has a sweet and very beautifull voice, she’s not Mariah Carey, but she has a beautiful voice in her way. Miley has an awesome and strong voice, the only problem, I guess, was that Taylor’s song wasn’t in her key. But it was beautiful and lovely at all.

Everybody is arrested at the stereotype that only the ‘great’ bands are good. COme on!
Have you ever stop and think that has people in the world who really hates U2? and Coldplay?
They’re not perfect. the unanimity is the foolest thing in the world.
There’s always people who like something, and for make it more interesting there’s people who hate it. But I guess that put a bit of faith in the new generation doesn’t hurt. Forget about the Disney whole thing, artists like Demi (have you ever hear her voice?), Miley and the JoBros deserve a lit bit of atention, and not all this skepticism. They got talent, if you open your mind enough to see it, and then, believe that our new generation is far from singers like Britney and Kate Perry.

Josephine | 2/10/2009, 10:29 am EST

I love the performance with Stevie Wonder and the Jonas Brothers!! I still watch it, like on Youtube. Nicholas, my heart went out to him. Every year, from like November til the beginning of March, that poor boy has a cold… voice loss, stuffy nosie, all that. So, he lost his voice like halfway through “Superstition” but he kept going and the performance was really really great!
Ya, always stickin’ up for my boys, I wonder if any of you remember me? The Jonas Brothers, of all the people in the entertainment industry, have the craziest fans, and you’d better believe it!!

auggie | 2/10/2009, 10:41 am EST

the grammys need more acts like radiohead, i have not seen a in your face performance like that since the white stripes in 2004…the show basically sucked, much like most of popular music. Did anybody else think it was odd for gweneth to introduce radiohead? I don’t think she could have kept a straight face singing the same praise for her hubby’s little band.

Just Sayin | 2/10/2009, 10:57 am EST

Everyone praising Radiohead performance when it was a slight rip off of Fletwood Mac. Way to talented to not play the song by themselves. I like the ambition though.
Musical tastes are individual opinions, so I will take my jabs by saying people who hate on Coldplay have never listened to their albums start to finish. One of the better groups out there.
Will someone please tell all rap acts to stop yelling “Yo!” when they play together.
NeLo your table is ready!

HMC20 | 2/10/2009, 11:27 am EST

It’s clear Radiohead had the best performance….but the only band that could have out down Radiohead was Kings Of Leon. Someone tell me why they didn’t perform?? They obviously are one of the best live bands around today. Stupid americans!

de rosa | 2/10/2009, 2:26 pm EST

of course…U2…the rest are just okay.

Anonymous | 2/10/2009, 2:50 pm EST

The people have spoken. Rap sucks.

fydo1974 | 2/10/2009, 2:51 pm EST

I thought the grammys sucked!
I can stand Katey Perry enough already the jonas brothers were hideous they wont last long.I liked Kaynya west with Addele
U2 were great! the song isnt very good though radiohead were wonderfull Coldplay were good nota huge fan

truth | 2/10/2009, 3:08 pm EST

Radiohead’s 15 step hands-down best performance followed by Bo diddley tribute. U2 needs to stop and the rest of the show was chit. Coldplay’s wack.

SR | 2/10/2009, 3:39 pm EST

Orianthi. Definitely the highlight of the show.

Zap | 2/10/2009, 5:08 pm EST

Won’t ever watch this Garbagio show again after Dave Matthews Band sax player LeRoi Moore was inexcusably left out of the In Memoriam section. He was a pioneer and an essential part of a band that’s been one of the most successful touring bands of the last 15 years. Not only that, but he’s also a true musical genius in every sense of the word. That Academy doesn’t care a lick for music, otherwise Roi wouldn’t have been snubbed. I’m sickened……..

mitch | 2/10/2009, 5:14 pm EST

i liked hip hop when it was called RAP! Ghetto Boys, NWA, Ice-T. There is just no originality. Well, very little. I give Gnarls Barkly credit for being different. Radiohead is my favorite band, and although I liked that they were on there, it still made me feel weird. They are globally one of the biggest bands and they still are not commercially big in America. Thank god! And to the guy that said white boys ripped off rock n roll from the blues. you are close, but I would dig deeper to compare the early blues with early mountain and folk music. they kinda go hand in hand. everyone borrows from everyone. And I miss the days when young black musicians were praised for their music abilities (stevie wonder, miles davis, prince, bb king, coltrane, many more..) rather then pants down around the ankles, gold chain wearing, “thug” wanna be, materialistic, fake-ass, rhymers. Be different, I really don’t like Kanye, but he is a different bird. finally, The Black Angels are the best band most of you have never heard of!

Pete | 2/10/2009, 5:23 pm EST

I thought U2 were pretty good last night although you could hardly hear Bono’s voice. FANTASTIC to have them back. Coldplay thoroughly deserved their 3 awards showing them to be easily the best band out there at the moment and Martin and his piano were great until Jay Z came in. Piano and rap don’t mix.

Radiohead? The same bland, boring stuff from them again. Is it any wonder why they don’t get as many awards as other bands around them? Thom Yorke simply cannot sing.

KB | 2/10/2009, 6:54 pm EST

My favorite part of the Grammy’s was seeing Paul McCartney in the front row jamming and singing along to Neil Diamond’s “sweet caroline” and pointing to Coldplays drummer to sing along with him. At least he knows how to have a good time and isn’t a total douchebag pre-maddona like Bono.

Hilikus | 2/11/2009, 2:36 am EST

Yo pete!!! regarding thom yorke…saying he cant sing….You’d probably appreciate him if you didn’t listen to nickelback or kid rock you tasteless buffoon. but im glad you don’t like him beacause your brain would hurt to understand the intricacy of radioheads’ music..F***ker!!!!

NT | 2/11/2009, 10:37 am EST

I am a huge fan of Coldplay’s music but I wish Chris Martin stopped being such a clown. he moves around way too much to the point that his words are way too shaky and he murders the songs.
Katie Perry had her 15 minutes of fame, now please go away!

NT | 2/11/2009, 10:42 am EST

I have liked U2 since their beginnings, however I wish they retired while they are ahead. They are in danger of becoming a dinosaur band, just as the Rolling Stones or Aerosmith. Don’t ruin it guys!

Chad Hampton | 2/11/2009, 11:56 am EST

First of all this was the best Grammys in a long time. Radiohead was amazing and everybody else was a step or two below them. There were definitely some questionable awards given out but we all know they never get the awards part right. It’s all about the performances and at least they got that right.

darthwilson | 2/11/2009, 12:38 pm EST

The grammys are totally irrelevant. When the 4 best “alternative” albums this year were not even nominated there is something wrong. I agree with MMJ’s Evil Urges and Radioheads In Rainbows but to not include TV on the Radio’s Dear Science, Fleet Foxes self titled, Vampire Weeekends Self titled or even Bon Iver’s For Emma or MGMT’S album is a disgrace!

raisedlefteyebrow | 2/11/2009, 2:34 pm EST

People shouldn’t be so judgemental about rap. Rap is a truly unique art that is almost entirely based on lyrical strength. It’s just been suffering from a decline for the past several years just like rock. Also, I find it ironic that Radiohead fans (and I’m a huge Radiohead fan) are often the most critical of the genre despite the fact that the band itself loves it, especially guitarist Jonny Greenwood who has said that hip-hop is one of his favorite genres of music.

anonymous | 2/11/2009, 5:48 pm EST

Dave Grohl was great, and looked like he was having a blast playing with Macca. It would have been a perfect moment in time, though, if Ringo showed up with Sir Paul to sing “A Little Help From My Friends,” then launch into “Saw Her Standing There” with Paul (maybe playing along with Dave Grohl).

steelers4ever | 2/11/2009, 8:17 pm EST

I enjoyed the show and my favorites were Coldplay, Radiohead, U2, Sir Paul w/ David Grohl and Kanye w/ Estelle. Despite the Grammy result, I still believe that “Viva La Vida” is the best album of 2008!

kaitlin | 2/12/2009, 8:19 am EST

McCartney and Dave Grohl. Hands down best performance.
And Whitney made me laugh.
Also, Robert Plant and Alison Kraus winning album of the year made me a little nauseous.

joebama | 2/12/2009, 1:36 pm EST

I didn’t watch the grammys this year…I will probably do the same next year…and the year after that…etc.

Jay KK | 2/12/2009, 6:31 pm EST

Well i think that the grammys were really good and also kinda classy wich i like. My favorite was M.I.A, Chris Martin and Jay-Z and the moment where Adele recieve the Grammy and says: “…. I love Duffy, mmmmm …and the Jonas Brothers too” doing the best joke of the night. I know Rolling Stone really loves the Jonas Brothers but i just think they are really coky and annoing…. so Good speech Adele

Anonymous | 2/12/2009, 7:46 pm EST

it is a sin that coldplay beat out ac/dc for rock album. of course, this is the same awards show that awarded jethro tull a grammy over metallica, so i’m not surprised.

Pam | 2/13/2009, 8:55 am EST

It was exciting to see a strong live performance of “Get On Your Boots” from U2 for the first time. I also loved the way Chris Martin played “Lost” together with Jay-Z on the piano. And Jenifer Hudson´s vocals were very moving and beautiful.Another clear highlight was of course Radiohead. Their big orchestra was amazing! It was also great to see legends like Paul McCartney and Robert Plant.

remp | 2/13/2009, 10:40 pm EST

I have an aide or (at least)a case of Q-Tips for the hearing-impaired fellow who doesn’t think Thom Yorke (Radiohead) can sing!? No accounting for taste fella…..but the guy sings his balls off!

Lane | 2/14/2009, 1:43 pm EST

Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift? Seriously? They were – at best – off-key and screechy.

Joe | 2/15/2009, 11:40 am EST

Why is rap such crap?

me | 2/15/2009, 3:50 pm EST

Get on your boots………surely THE worst song…EVER.Awful self-parody from Bono

ThomYorke | 2/15/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Radiohead should won all that shit!!!

P.D: Coldplay sucks!

P.P.D: U2 new song sucks too!

Anonymous | 2/16/2009, 5:01 pm EST

All these bands, with the exception of Radiohead, are crap. U2, in particular, and the likes of Metallica, and all those 70/s / 80’s bands, are all so far up their own arses they can’t see straight.

MIRAN | 2/17/2009, 5:51 pm EST

1. WHEN DID PAUL MCCARTNEY TURN INTO ANGELA LANSBURY?..

2. WHY DID HE SING A BEATLES SONG WE’VE ALL HEARD A MILLION TIMES WHEN HE HAD A NEW SONG THAT WAS NOMINATED?

3. WHEN IS SIR PAUL GONNA STOP ROLLING OUT THE OLD DITTIES, SMILING AND BOBBING HIS HEAD LIKE 40 YEARS AGO?

4. JOHN OR GEORGE WOULD’VE NEVER DONE THAT, I MISS THEM…

5. GUESS HE’S GOTTA START MAKING MONEY FOR THE NEXT GOLDIGGER HE MARRIES.

6. RADIOHEAD WAS AWESOME.

CarrieROCKED! | 2/17/2009, 6:45 pm EST

How can you seriously exclude Carrie Underwood’s amazing performance from your highlight list? She was one of the best of the night!

Taylor Swift SUCKED as always, as she can’t sing her way out of a paper bag. What is it with RollingStone that they love that talent-less brat so much? She is the worst singer in any genre. Even Miley was better.

shuksan7 | 3/7/2009, 5:25 am EST

Hello— is anyone out there???? How could anything be talked about except Radiohead’s performance?????????????????

The now band created unheard of music, as precise as any 100 piece orchestra, thanks to the skill of USC’s Marching Band. Yet still retaining and expanding and originating electric rock music.

Go back and listen. You’ve never heard anything like it before.

Rick
