U2’s “Get On Your Boots” Video Returns as “Horizon” Previews Disappear

2/9/09, 9:49 am EST

Can’t wait until March 3rd to hear the new U2 album No Line on the Horizon and last night’s performance of “Get On Your Boots” at the Grammy Awards wasn’t enough of a fix? You’re out of luck now, but attentive U2 fans caught 30-second previews of every song on the band’s upcoming LP this weekend on the Walmart MP3 store Website. Fans got a revealing sneak peak at the entire album, from the opening title track to the closer “Cedars of Lebanon.”

If U2 fans were surprised at how much Walmart was revealing with the preview, they had good reason: By this morning, the previews were taken down, replaced with a female voice saying, “Previews are currently unavailable for this advanced product.” The previews did reveal that the album sounds very unlike the band’s bombastic first single “Get On Your Boots,” and instead straddles the line between The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. For much more on No Line on the Horizon, check out Rolling Stone’s exclusive first listen: U2 Break Down No Line on the Horizon.

There is some consolation if you missed the previews, however. Remember that “Get On Your Boots” video Rock Daily told you about? The one that was yanked off the Internet? It’s back now over at MySpace Music with much higher picture quality. Thankfully, our suspicions that the video that originally surfaced was a unfinished edit were confirmed when the new clip emerged without those “Getty Images” watermarks plastered on the photos behind the Edge.

Thank God | 2/9/2009, 10:44 am EST

Thank god the rest of the album doesn’t sound like “Get on Your Boots.” That song is terrible, and last night’s Grammy performance confirms it. Now I have some faith the album will be much better than I anticipated based on that crap song.

yeah that song really blows… and that was one of the weakest u2 performances i’ve seen

Achtung U2 | 2/9/2009, 11:56 am EST

I’m as big of a U2 fan as they come. I’ll defend them to the end, but even I will admit they were horrible last night at the Grammys.

I don’t HATE the song, but it is clearly not ready to be performed live yet. They need to work on a new live arrangement ASAP, because it was seriously not happening last night.

Bad way to kickoff the publicity machine for the new album, that’s for sure.

Oh please. that song rocked. even more so that they’ve never played it live. Cant fault the band (or any other band last night) because the acoustics blew. Cant wait for the album and tour.

I thought the performance was pretty good, not great, but not nearly as bad as people are painting it.

The song itself is classic. I think people need to just give it time. It had a lot of classic elements to it. It has a great bass line, guitar hook, the drums are killer and bono’s voice is great. It’s 10 times better than Vertigo, that’s for sure. Plus, the video is incredible.

“straddles the line between The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby”

Let’s hope so (isn’t that what they said about ATYCLB?)

Loved Adam’s Gibson Bass (not a Jazz bass for a change)at the Grammys

The new song is not great, but then again “Discotheque” was weak and “The Fly” was by no means the best song on Achtung.

Pam Mea Bonamusica | 2/9/2009, 2:41 pm EST

Wow, this video is exciting! It´s full of energy and strong colours and the density of images is breathtaking. It really emphasizes the high speed of the song. We see erupting volcanoes, running soldiers and planes as a wild background to the performing band.

The French filmmaker Alex Courtes creates a phantastic mixture of visuals that rapidly change between futuristic and historical elements. The video starts with an image of the outerspace when we hear “The future needs a big kiss” and there are neon lights behind Bono. And just a little later we see symbols of the past like skulls, ancient statues and pillars. At this point I think of Daniel Lanois who said:” It (the album) embraces the future but still pays respect to tradition.” I think the video also shows that in some way.

And of course there are a lot of “sexy boots” and red lipped women. Will women get on their boots politically, economically and socially?

rekcuf | 2/9/2009, 3:42 pm EST

U2 pulls this stuff down and puts it back just because they know the media will report it.

Free publicity.

The boots song is weak anyway.

hmmmmmm | 2/9/2009, 4:39 pm EST

they didnt put it up there to begin with, hctib.

thompson bukowski | 2/9/2009, 6:48 pm EST

I heard the 30 sec..clips and none of the other songs are on the same planet as Get on your boots. Last couple songs reminded me of the joshua tree. Fez(being born) sounds like something from the passengers and million dollar hotel soundtrk. first few tracks sound like the calmer achtung tunes. this first single is very misleading towards the whole album.

I tried to go into the Walmart site, but then the thing was loading…and loading…and loading……..This was too much of an eternity for me, but I don´t really worry. Maybe it´s more beautiful NOT to hear the songs before the release, because that would take away some adrenaline. I always love the moment when I unpack a new record ´cause I´m SO excited to hear the songs for the very first time. I don´t wanna miss that beautiful feeling.

On Purpose | 2/12/2009, 12:41 pm EST

U2 does this on purpose to get peoples attention. Thats why they are who they are. They knew that the new song was going to get people talking….and thats exactly what they want. They’re confident (and good enough) to expiriment like this because they know they have probably 5 or 6 instant hits on the new album anyway.

pmag | 2/12/2009, 6:27 pm EST

Yesterday’s band. Can you imagine this on War or Boy? The authenticity has been drained from them like Bono’s voice. It hurts.

Fuck-OFF! | 2/15/2009, 1:28 pm EST

IT`S NOT THAT BAD OF A SONG. THOUG I THINK “POP” WAS THEIR MOST UNDERRATED ALBUM AND THEY SORT OF GOT SCARED OF EXPERIMENTING. STILL MISS THE “POP” DAYS, AND ESPECIALLY THE “POPMART” TOUR WIHCIH WAS VERY SMART…

Please! | 2/17/2009, 9:40 pm EST

As a long time U2 fan, this is what I want to hear. The song has an old school u2 sound with a new school edge. It will be great live.

Memphis, TN's FRANK MAIER | 3/11/2009, 2:12 am EST

U2- Ya’ll need to come back to Memphis to record your next album, as we are a Rock’n'Soul city, and ya” need to get back to your roots- if I’m not mistaken, ya’ll recorded one tune here(was it the one that mentions “in the Memphis say”(In the Name of Love). ARDENT STUDIOS has produced many hits for R.E.M., ZZ TOP, Tom Cochran(Life Is A Highway), BIG STAR(Alex Chilton’s band, post The Box Tops), The Gin Blossom’s, The Replacements, Skillet, Etc. SUN(Elvis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash) and HI(Al Green, Willie Mitchell, Anne Peeples) studios are still active recording studios, as well! “Information…Give U2 Memphis Tennessee”! See ya’ round the Bluff City – Home of the Blues, the Birthplace of RocK’N'Roll!!!
