Kings of Leon, Coldplay Celebrate Grammy Wins at Star-Packed Afterparties

When the pageantry of the 51st Annual Grammy Awards wrapped at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, the stars headed off into the night to party — or enjoy a nice quiet dinner, as Dave Grohl described his post-show plan. Radiohead took off for their Hollywood Hills house party, where members of Maroon 5 gathered, while Jason Mraz dropped off his mom (his Grammy date) and headed to the Sunset Marquis for what he described as a more mellow hang.

At the private Kings of Leon post-Grammy party at the exclusive Teddy’s in the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, Kid Rock held court in a roped off area reserved for his crew, which included ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons. Before the end of the night, the bearded legend had made Kings bassist Jared Followill’s day: “Billy Gibbons gave me his slide!” he excitedly told us. When asked about the Kings’ Grammy win, Nathan sarcastically replied, “Finally, after nine long years!”

The Kings’ bash also drew out Kirsten Dunst, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds, and Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. Katy Perry arrived in a silver sparkly flapper dress at 12:45 a.m. with a massive posse and headed to the back to smoke cigarettes with Johansson, while Suge Knight chatted with Kid Rock and Slash made his way over to Timberlake. The party cleared out at 1:45 a.m., and rumor had it Prince was hosting his annual post-Grammy house party.

EMI threw a more private bash at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills for the company’s artists and executives. Coldplay, fresh off their three wins, were in attendance, though Chris Martin (sans wife Gwyneth Paltrow) didn’t stay long. Katy Perry made an appearance, as did Keith Urban with Nicole Kidman and presenter Kate Beckinsdale. And SonyBMG’s unofficial artist soiree was held at the bar in the Beverly Hills Hotel, where John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston, Clive Davis, Carrie Underwood, T-Pain, Adele, Anthony Hamilton and Sara Bareilles gathered to toast the label’s big Grammy victories.

Well deserved win. The band should celebrate and be proud.

A few years ago, they would have never even been nominated, let alone made the telecast.

Great band, great record and I’m just dissapointed they didn’t win more.

caleb’s face says it all….congrats!

Daniel | 2/9/2009, 3:10 pm EST

they are sexy

Daniel | 2/9/2009, 3:11 pm EST

in a platonic way.

I’m so happy that Kings of Leon won a Grammy. I think they deserved Rock Album of the Year.

Blu | 2/9/2009, 4:06 pm EST

I’ve been a faithful fan since Youth and Young Manhood, it’s about time.

It’s rad that Kings finally won a Grammy and got some recognition for their brilliance.

Too bad they didn’t win Rock Album over Coldplay, though. Coldplay is nice, but, in all seriousness, Kings actually Rock.

Shawn | 2/9/2009, 6:27 pm EST

What happened to Kings of Leon? They are just another U2, Coldplay kinda band now and it really dissapoints me. I know it’s cliche to say a band isnt as good as they used to be when they start making it big, but thier last album is a snooze(except maybe 2 songs)and the one before was a bit underwhelming as well.

Youth and young manhood was like nothing I had ever heard before, totally unique and ballsy. Aha Shake Heartbreak was amazing as well but now they are just so uninspiring. More self important “soaring arena rock” to fill the airwaves, yih…pee. They used to be “the southern strokes” now thier just “the southern coldplay”.

KoL, give me more songs about getting laid, PLEASE! Its where you shine.

M | 2/9/2009, 7:22 pm EST

They blow, their first 2 albums were exciting, fun and a breath of fresh air. I don’t get how people think they are great now. Because of the Times was a decent album, but this new one is just awful, yet people think they are this great band. In my honest opinion they shouldn’t even been nominated. If anything Consolers of the Lonely should of won. Certainly not Coldplay

bdgavin | 2/9/2009, 8:12 pm EST

Only by the Night pales in comparison to their first 3 albums. It’s weird how great bands like KOL don’t get nominations or wins for their best stuff. Only by the Night is more mainstream, watered-down sounding music. Sex On Fire has a catchy chorus that is looped over and over so that you can’t get it out of your head. It’s more of an advertisement than a song, but I still love the band. Hopefully they’ll get ashamed of all the attention for a mediocre album and get back to making awsome music that appeared on Youth and Young Manhood, Aha Shake Heartbreak, and Because of the Times. Disregard the previous poster, Because of the Times was just as good as their first two albums.

Patti | 2/9/2009, 8:20 pm EST

The more and more i listen to their album the more and more i appreciate them.

Chris Kirkpatrick | 2/9/2009, 8:54 pm EST

This is great, cause I love parties.

Kings of Leon’s new CD does not suck! their music is evolving and keeps getting better and better. woud the Beatles be as famous if all their albums sounded like Please Please Me? fuck no they wouldn’t, keep doing what you do followill boys!!

Sheree | 2/9/2009, 11:12 pm EST

I would like to ask them if they sold their soul. They were raised Born Again Christians, on their website they are shown praying I would ask them who they are praying to? Jesus does not listen to rock music. Read “90 minutes in Heaven” for a description of Heaven’s music. If the rapture is today fornicators & drunks will not go, you may have salvation if you don’t take the mark, but at what martyred price? Your Head Chopped Off. The latest rock stars or not you can bet if KOL are left behind they will know not to take the mark. Who knows maybe they were born for such a time as this. They could change the world for their generation, if they repented and turned back to God before it is to late. Thank You!!!

@Sheree: First of all, “90 minutes in heaven” is Don Piper’s story. It is NOT the infallible Word of God. God created all things, putting Jesus right along side that. Music is music. To say “Jesus does not listen to rock music” is simply absurd.

Please refrain from your heretic comments.

Peter, LA CA. | 2/10/2009, 3:30 am EST

That 90 Minutes in Hell video is a joke. Who are you to judge and determine whether or not someone is a person of faith!! You’re not. Gett off your high horse and take the log out of your own eye.

KAT | 2/10/2009, 4:34 am EST

TO SHEREE are you serious you cant think that way seriously they arent born again christians to start with and as long as they live a good life then what does it matter you dont know them and obviously dont have the capacity to see their music so i think you should keep you comments to your self cause its all about the music and how it feels…

L | 2/10/2009, 5:30 am EST

go Kings!!!

so glad they won ^^
I thought they should’ve won more tho

clinically disinterested | 2/10/2009, 6:43 am EST

I’ve been a faithful fan since Youth and Young Manhood, it’s about time.
While I must dispense with my cynicism for a minute to congratulate a band that for me generally have rock star credentials and have, in their prior albums evinced signs of true majestic Southern rock in the same vein as their predecessors, Lynrd Skynrd. I can’t help, while being proud that they’ve achieved such a mainstream plaudit, feel as though they’ve sold their soul for commercial success. Use Somebody is banal, derivative rock so bloated on its egotism, so sickeningly self-aggrandising, it sounds less like the typical bluesy, soulful style of Caleb et al and more like a Pepsi commercial (which I wouldn’t be surprised if it was made in mind for.) Sex on Fire for me is odd. I can’t rationalise in my own mind whether it is a brilliant burst of pure, exhilarating rock perfection or masquerading as such behind an incessant beat that refuses to leave the residence of your brain. And while I can’t help but be enamoured by the balladry and charm of Revelry or the genuinely claustrophobic sounds of Closer, I can’t help but feel this album has been created solely to galvanise the US market. It’s no secret that Caleb has always been aggrieved by the band’s lack of success in the States and while it seems, with stints on Saturday Night Live, a Grammy, a sold out gig in Madison Square Gardens and more celebrity kudos and sycophancy than you’ll find at a pre-Oscar lunch, they’ve eschewed the great music that so cemented their success in the genuinely musically adroit UK in favour of stadiums and chart toppers. I only hope that they don’t buckle under the pressure of avaricious record companies to recreate this superficial, meaningless glut because, and I speak as a real Kings of Leon fan, from the yesteryear of Youth and Young Manhood, another instalment of this saga will leave me with indigestion. Anyone for White Denim?

Melanie | 2/10/2009, 9:09 am EST

Kings of Leon ROCK!! Give the Tennessee guys a break (I am referencing the earlier posts)!! They are full of soul and rawness that only comes from a TRUE artist. I love them! They deserve a grammy, in fact, in my opinion, they should have won all 3; it is about time they were acknowledged for their talent. Can’t wait to see them live this spring!!! Keep on rockin’ Followill Men!!!

Melanie | 2/10/2009, 9:12 am EST

Kings of Leon ROCK!!! I am so happy for them that they finally were acknowledged for their soulful, raw talent!! True Artist!! They should have won all of the grammys that they were nominated for, in my opinion!! Can’t wait to see them live this Spring!! Keep on rockin’ Followil Men!!!

M | 2/10/2009, 11:07 am EST

By far their worst album, and even if the same record was made by a different band it would still be a shitty record. Who ever said that this record has soul….well they must be as deep as a puddle. its garbage

dude | 2/10/2009, 11:49 am EST

KOL’s albums definitely go from Best to Not Best….but I love all of them. Youth and Aha were simply amazing, BOTT could’ve been better if they would’ve traded McFearless, Black Thumbnail, or My Party with the unreleased My Third House and also added in Woo Hoo. Only By The Night is a beautiful album, but definitely a little more commercial. If Caleb changed their sound just to appeal to the U.S. audience, then that’s simply pathetic. The U.S.’s taste in music sucks (I’m saying that as an American citizen.) Every decent band around has had to have success in the UK before the U.S. (Jimi Hendrix, the Roots, KOL, and many more.)

dude | 2/10/2009, 11:50 am EST

and I hail Steve Earle for saying that Caleb has one of the greatest vocals that Rock n Roll has ever produced…so true.

Yaboy | 2/10/2009, 12:21 pm EST

King of Leon FTW. I hope something is crackin at the Hollywood Roosevelt this week. I’ll be there all week.

FreshVoice | 2/11/2009, 1:03 am EST

I love the kIngs of Leon! They have so much creativity and creativity is important in an artist because without it music can be very dull..im glad that their home country has finally recognize their talents. With or with out the awards I feel the Kings of Leon will always be one of my all time favorite band & I have been listening to them since I was 14! Yes I am very young but I love their music..All the guys are talented..I hope they keep making great music..

Stacey | 2/11/2009, 8:19 am EST

Whoever doesn’t like KOL’s music means that you cannot appreciate good music. KOL’s albums have gotten better & better over the years. To say that their newest album sucks is rediculous. It’s amazing & shows how much the band has grown through the years. Keep up the great work boys, I support you 100%!!

MEADOWS | 2/11/2009, 9:24 am EST

THIS COMMENT IS TO THE WONDERFUL NICE LADY AND JUDGE SHEREE, I AM THEIR AUNT AND THE ONLY THING I HAVE TO SAY TO YOU IS “THANK GOODNESS YOU WILL NOT BE THEIR JUDGE BUT A WONDERFUL MERCIFUL GOD WILL BE!!! THE BIBLE SAYS “JUDGE NOT” YOU MUST HAVE MISSED THAT IN YOUR DAILY DEVOTION.

KOL weary | 2/11/2009, 1:16 pm EST

Couldn’t agree more with “Clinically Disinterested.” What I was drawn to with these guys was the raunchy swagger that filled their songs. It was honest and just rocked. While Only By the Night has great songs…the album as a whole lost that swagger. In fact if it wasnt for Calebs rediculously unique voice it would have sounded rather generic. I think even just 2 or 3 rockin, bluesy, swaggering songs would have made this an AWESOME album. Great bands must evolve. B/C of the Times was a great example of a band evolving without losing what made them great. Dont get me wrong they are one of my favorite bands, but it concerns me to see how interested they are with fame. Great music is never made for the sake of pleasing the masses. Im glad they have a little more cash in their pockets and are getting the credit they deserve, but I really hope that next album has a little more balls. Fingers crossed!

Sheree | 2/11/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Aunt Meadows of KOL, You are right I am not their judge God is. When they stand before God he will ask them 2 questions 1.What did you do with your knowledge of My Son Jesus? 2.What did you do with the gifts and talents I gave you? Right now their answer would be ditched Jesus and rocked on. God calls unholy music of any kind noise. see Isaiah 14:11 The KOL are not stupid they know the word of God. They were raised on it. Hebrews 10:26 Aunt. Revelation 3:15-17 Aunt. I am praying for them, not judging them. It is called Exhortation. Mark these words “At least one of the members of KOL has an unction from God to be a leader to reach his generation with the Gospel of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” He will leave the band to serve God. He needs to make haste, this could be the night the moon turns red. God Bless you for loving them, I will be praying for them. Your Sister in Christ, Sheree

SHEREE, PROVERBS 22;6 Train up a child in the way he should go,and when he is old,he will not depart from it.I am at peace because I know how these boys were raised,”In the Truth”.. Being close to the boys I know their hearts and i know all will be well.
You just sounded a little harsh and of course I am going to defend them. They are sweet boys and they haven’t for one second forgotten who gave them their talent. They have parents, grandparents, uncles,au nts praying for them daily. I love them very much. Thank you for your prayers but remember God is gentle not pushy and very merciful, I just wished you would have sounded more like HIM..

marieeeeeee | 2/20/2009, 6:19 pm EST

this wasnt the best album by KOL, very commercial compared to the others. but, they still are an awesome band and deserved this.

To Aunt Meadows and Sheree | 7/22/2009, 3:31 pm EST

To Aunt Meadows: I commend you for defending your faith AND the boys. I am a believer AND a fan of the band. Your love and acceptance radiates Jesus.

Sheree: My dear sister, when you fall, and since you are human, I am guessing this happens, I pray that someone shows you grace and you will know in your heart that His blood covers EVERY sin of those who believe. Be blessed.

Brenda | 9/21/2009, 2:58 am EST

I am just discovering KOL this month and god what took me so long! They are amazing and inspiring. Some of their songs bring me back to the 70’s in a good… very good way! I would think that people would be thrilled that this new album has attracted so many “new” fans like me who didn’t even know they existed. Now I am out there buying all 4 of their albums including “Youth and Young Manhood”. I love their old stuff as well as their new stuff. My favorites off the new one are “Crawl”, “Cold Desert” which is so haunting!, Use Somebody, Be Somebody, Closer, Sex on Fire, Notion, … oh the whole album I guess. Can’t wait to see them live… Please come to Virginia!!!
