Backstage at the Grammys: Paul McCartney, Adele, Robert Plant Open Up on Rock’s Big Night

While Chris Martin was kissing up to Paul McCartney and Kanye West was showing off his mullet onstage at tonight’s Grammy Awards, Rolling Stone was hanging out backstage and in the press room at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where newcomers like Miley Cyrus, Adele and Carrie Underwood rubbed shoulders with legends like Paul McCartney, B.B. King and the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart (check out photos of the behind-the-scenes action in our Grammy backstage gallery). It was the kind of environment that made stars want to open up, and Cyrus happily confessed her crush on Kings of Leon’s bassist Jared Followill. “He’s pretty good looking,” she said. “I’m not usually one to freak, but me and Taylor [Swift] last night were like, ‘Holy smoke!’ ” Don’t expect the two teen pop stars to hook up with the Kings anytime soon, though: “Katy Perry was like, ‘They have super hot girlfriends.’ I was like, ‘Dang it!’ ”

A more jovial Paul McCartney joked with reporters about the Beatles’ relatively modest Grammy haul. “I’m very annoyed,” he said. “I didn’t come here to win it. I’ve come to be in it!” Later on, RS caught up with another jokester — Adele — after she came offstage with her Best New Artist win. “I was ecstatic and really shocked,” she said. “It’s surreal. I got a little emotional.” The British neo-soul singer admitted to getting teary onstage, but says she fought the emotions by admitting to her crush on the Jonas Brothers, who she beat in the category. “I just tried to keep it together and make a joke,” she said. As for her afterparty plans, Adele said she was going to take it easy. “I’ve stopped drinking so I’m just hanging out with my friends tonight,” she said. Her reason for hopping on the wagon? “For mental reasons, so I do my work and don’t forget to wake up in the morning.”

Ben Gibbard — whose band Death Cab for Cutie was nominated for Best Rock Song (”I Will Possess Your Heart”) and Best Alternative Album (Narrow Stairs) — didn’t think his group stood a shot for winning, but he was happy to be there nonetheless. “I don’t feel like we should be in the category with these amazing bands who I respect,” he said, referring to fellow nominees like Beck, Gnarls Barkley, My Morning Jacket and Radiohead in the category of Best Alternative Album. “So it’s nice to be mentioned in the same breath.” The Dead’s Mickey Hart shared a similar sentiment: “It’s not about the Grammys. It’s about feeling good about yourself and making music with other people. It’s not a horse race,” he said after winning Best Contemporary World Music Album for his Global Drum Project. And Robert Plant told the gathered reporters, “This is the most remarkable liaison I’ve been involved in. I couldn’t believe what we’d done.”

Earlier in the press room, Will.i.am was in a cheerful mood and jested about the area’s overabundance of PCs instead of Macs, quipping, “That’s not cool, folks!” But other stars were more sober: Carrie Underwood said she was stoked to watch Jennifer Hudson sing on the backstage monitors. “She’s handled the media attention with such grace and it was amazing to see her get onstage and see that healing process,” she said of Hudson, who has recently stepped back into the spotlight following the murders of her mother, brother and nephew.

And B.B. King — who would go on to score his 15th win for “One Kind Favor” in the category of “Best Tradtional Blues Album” — took a serious moment to reflect on the state of the country. “I believe the blues, the way things are today, is more important now than it ever was,” he said. “Unless you got a lot of money. I don’t.”

Did anyone besides me notice that Robert Plant was a complete PIG last night at the Grammys???? He refused to allow Alison Krauss to say anything really, and raised the microphone up so high she couldn’t speak out of it!!! He acted like a total prick – no manners whatsoever. I can’t have been the only one who noticed this.

Fan Mail | 2/9/2009, 10:54 am EST

Where are the other Radiohead, i only saw Two band members.

Thief in the Orchard | 2/9/2009, 11:12 am EST

Elinor, The mic stand was lifted not by the presenters, but mechanically by some off-stage hand (I noticed it happening all night). Also, he’s totally praised Allison Krauss for turning him on to heaps of American music, and he praised her during his acceptance speech. She’s also quite shy and not known for speaking very much. So yes I think you are the only one who noticed whatever it is you noticed.

basser | 2/9/2009, 11:20 am EST

All of Radiohead were there in the audience, but only Thom and the guitarist performed with the USC marching band.

Marty | 2/9/2009, 12:34 pm EST

Elinor….Robert is one of the nicest celebrities you will ever meet! I’m sure something was said before the show about who would speak. What you see with him is what you get. Not one phony bone in his body and let’s not forget the man has sold over 300 million records world wide….he’s not a rookie.

Joe Huggins | 2/9/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Not true. He was a gentleman. She quite obviously deferred to him as the spokesman for the band. Plant was so generous he even brought T-Bone forward to speak after they were trying to play them off the stage, but he would not let T-Bone be denied. That T-Bone is one cool cat.

lake monster | 2/9/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Elinor,

I’m not sure what you saw, but what I saw was a gentleman giving wel-deserved accolades to his collaborator. Did you not even consider that the choice of spokesperson was determined in advance? I can think of many words to describe Mr. Plant – pig is certainly not one of them!

lake monster | 2/9/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Elinor -

I’m not certain what you saw, but what I saw was a gentleman lavishing praise and admiration for his collaborator. Did you even consider that the role of spokesperson was determined in advance of the announcement?

lake monster | 2/9/2009, 2:11 pm EST

Oops, sincerest apologies for the double post!

Cheryl | 2/9/2009, 5:06 pm EST

Elinor, I’m appalled at your referring to Robert Plant as a PIG. There isn’t any man in the music biz who’s more of a gentleman than Robert Plant. Alison is a bit shy and I’m sure she was fine with Robert doing the talking, which he is so charming at anyway. I demand you apologize IMMEDIATELY!!!

BEATLELOVER | 2/9/2009, 6:03 pm EST

PAUL MCCARTNEY IS AMAZING!!!!!!!
OMG!!!
I LOVE HIM ESPECIALLY WHEN HE WAS WITH WINGS!!!!!

Baz | 2/9/2009, 8:16 pm EST

Re-Robert Plant…

Elinor, your negativity becomes you :-(

bbc4477 | 2/9/2009, 8:26 pm EST

That was so nice of Carrie Underwood to single Jennifer Hudson out like that when she could of said something about herself!! And wow she has a rocker chick inside of her that busted out last night!! Oh and shes pretty hot too!

Dana | 2/9/2009, 9:09 pm EST

Elinor,
Yes, the first time he raised it by hand he raised it too high for himself even and did not lower it, for him or her…the second time when it was raised mechanically when he was speaking he dove for it, as if it was falling, and then was embarrassed he was tricked by the moving microphone so kept staring at it.

Ann | 2/10/2009, 6:46 am EST

Having bumped into Robert Plant in a shop once, many years ago I can tell you that he is a complete gentleman. He was polite and courteous to the staff who were helping him (they obviously had no idea who he was !) and not at all ‘the big I am’. An absolute delight. As for the Grammy’s, well if you’ve ever seem Alison interviewd it’s obvious she isn’t comfortable doing so and I’m quite certain the speeches would have been decided beforehand.
Personally I’d like to see more top performers with RP’s good manners and attitude. He has a wonderful reputation for treating his fans well.

Amy | 2/11/2009, 7:29 am EST

Elinor,

Clearly you aren’t familiar with Allison Krauss’ shyness. When they lowered the mic for her, did you not notice, she said “Oh…” because she shies away from that stuff. Always has. Whenever Plant/Krauss do press, he always speaks more and it’s planned that way.
PS- the use of the word PIG really shows you have no idea who this man really is. My husband & I have known him for years, and I can tell you, he’s a man of deep kindness and integrity. A very beloved guy by most all folks who cross his path.
You oughta be ashamed of that comment.

Joe H | 2/11/2009, 10:45 am EST

Clearly Elinor saw a different broadcast than the rest of us. I did notice Krauss was somewhat cut off with the first award, but it was clear Grammy-types were ushering her away from the mic. Also consider Krauss’ prior 21 Grammys and the fact that those were likely RP’s first that didn’t have “Achievement” in the title. As a follower of RP’s career and astute observer, I have to agree with Plant’s defenders here.

dman | 2/11/2009, 10:52 am EST

coldplay is wuss-rock. oh, and they copy U2. and yes i will kick your teeth in.

Vvn | 2/12/2009, 7:23 pm EST

Wow calm down people. Elinor was just asking. I noticed EXACTLY what she noticed. In fact, I searched “why RP didn’t let her speak” and this page came up–I was confused and disgusted as well. It is true, apparently we are both unaware of Krauss’s shyness. No need to bitch–we just wanted to know. Thanks for the information (though it was given in phony defensiveness).

Vvn | 2/12/2009, 7:33 pm EST

A few more things I want to say are that some of you (such as Marty and Joe H) were trying to argue that Robert Plant was being an “absolute gentleman”, which is fine to argue and I think I understand the reasoning better now, but you used the fact of his achievements as some type of evidence. That is LOGICAL FALLACY. Amy, who asserts that Elinor should be “ashamed”,should really keep some things in perspective: Elinor was noting an observation, not damning Robert Plant. And if Robert Plant is such a real person, with “not a single phony bone in his body,” I am sure he would be embarrassed by the silliness of these postings.

I noticed ! Yes, he’s a “gentleman” . A person can be a gentleman and a nitwitt at the same time. “Selfish” I think is a kinder, gentler description. So, hats off to Bobbie! He’s selfishly achieved a lifelong goal of his: winning Grammys for something curiously odd that he acomplished outside of LedZeppelin with a dash of commercial mechanisms in play (the church of T Bone’s Unification Producer Congregation Society) What a sensationally strange way to close the book on a lifetime of greatness……
