Eddie Van Halen on Son Wolfgang: “He Is a Part of Van Halen. Permanently.”

2/6/09, 2:55 pm EST

Photo: Mazur/Getty

Even Jeff Spicoli couldn’t have imagined a life this awesome: Wolfgang Van Halen, 17, spent last year on the road with his dad’s band Van Halen, playing bass on “Runnin’ With the Devil” and “Panama” to packed arenas — and he’s still on schedule to graduate from high school this June. “Wolfie had it the toughest on tour: he had three or four hours of [tutoring] every day, and then the gig,” says Eddie Van Halen. “I yanked him out of school for 11th grade, which is actually the most important year, because that’s what they go by for college. And the school said, ‘We’re not going to let him back in, if you pull him out, because we’ve never done that before.’ Well, first time for everything, dude, you know? They did let him back for 12th grade, because he wanted to graduate with his buddies.”

Wolfie plans to attend college at some point in the future, according to his dad: “He’s obviously going to Julliard or something like that — and they’ll take him at the drop of a hat, because he is ready. And the kid can act, too.” But for now? “He is a part of Van Halen. Permanently.”

That means Wolfgang is certainly a part of the band’s plans for a new album: In the current issue, Eddie Van Halen said he’s writing new songs for the next time Van Halen take the road. “I’ve got tons of music written, such a variety of stuff,” Eddie told Rolling Stone. “The essence of me is obviously there, and those drums, they’re always recognizable. But people expect a certain thing from Van Halen, and this isn’t exactly bang-your-head-against-the-wall stuff.”

Eddie may claim all he wants about how Wolfgang is a permanent part of Van Halen.

But any VH fan knows, its not really VH without Michael Anthony.

The last tour did okay, because of the novelty factor of David Lee Roth with them, after twenty something years.

But by the next tour, nobody will care about VH anymore. They will play to half-empty houses.

Eddie took a once-classic lineup, and ruined it, just to please his son.

George | 2/6/2009, 3:14 pm EST

A Michael Anthony-less VH? No, thanks.

Too similar | 2/6/2009, 3:14 pm EST

Eddie Van Halen-”Permanently”

Dubya-” Mission Accomplished”

IRS-”The check is in the mail”

RockinR | 2/6/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Rock on Men classic new material saw the 2007 tour it rocked…
Sorry Sam and Mike fans, life goes on they have a new all star band. check them out let’s end the drama and have all of them rock.

Crowe | 2/6/2009, 4:15 pm EST

I’d be intersted to hear new material. It’s one thing to do “Hot for Teacher” and “Everyone Wants Some” as 50-year olds on the nostalgia circuit, but what will their new music be about?

Bitter old man | 2/6/2009, 5:04 pm EST

God, I am jealous. How much tang does that 17 yr old tub o’ guts get?

Jeff | 2/6/2009, 5:40 pm EST

The tour would have been marvelous (I saw it twice) if not for the canned backing vocals and canned rhythm guitar tracks going on under the guitar solos.

Danny | 2/6/2009, 6:00 pm EST

Van Halen is the best band on Earth. Hands Down.

Joe "Mama" Besser | 2/6/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Anyone who thinks Michael Anthony is expendable (and that includes Eddie) doesn’t get what made Van Halen truly great — that untouchable rhythm section. I’m a drummer myself, and I’ve seen a lot of shows in my life, and I can tell you, I’ve never seen a more powerful rhythm section than Anthony and the Van Halens.

Eddie’s son can surely play and sing the notes, but that’s not what makes the sum larger than its parts.

It’s a shame, really, but, then, I’m not really trying to fool myself that what these guys are doing now is even remotely similar in quality, significance, and power to what they were doing back when they were great (and no matter what some people might think of Sammy, 5150 (the album and tour) kicked serious ass).

R.I.P. Van Halen.

fydo1974 | 2/6/2009, 7:58 pm EST

Bring back Mike and Sammy!

Van Halen | 2/6/2009, 8:13 pm EST

Just like GnR, Van Halen is done, and has been for many years.

John | 2/6/2009, 9:14 pm EST

To all the braindead wannabe van halen fans that say it`s not van halen without mike .Are you effen serious ?? It`s not van halen without dave and now it`s more van halen than ever.if you want sammy and mike listen to chickenfoot. I for one can`t wait to hear them with dave again there tour was one of the best

Surpised! | 2/7/2009, 12:19 am EST

It’s like a male version of Valerie Bertinelli just joined the band!

What a joke!

Go VH! | 2/7/2009, 3:08 am EST

I, for one, judge music by my own tastes. Not, as many here have put it, by “how relevant the band is” or “who will care about the band.” When I listen to music, I really don’t care who else is, too.

I’m sure it won’t be “classic Van Halen” without Mike, any more than it was “classic Van Halen” without Dave. But I liked Wolf’s style on the road (particularly his little interlude on “Romeo’s Delight”), and I’m interested in what he’ll bring to the song writing for the new album. I think the new record will have more interesting bass lines at the expense of better backup vocals.

So if several of the other commentators aren’t going to listen to the new album, that’s fine. If they’re right, and no one else does, that’s fine too. I will.

deano | 2/7/2009, 6:06 am EST

Bring back Cherone!

rockballs | 2/7/2009, 10:46 am EST

eddie, get your head out of your arse!
michael anthony was a major factor to the sound of van halen with his harmonies and instantly recognizable voice that just blended in perfectly.
chunkyboy don’t got those vocal chops and certainly not the experience of michael so why don’t you drop the grudge and let michael back in?
what did he do?
spill his beer on you?
probably something ridiculous like that but you’re too much of a turdpile to let it go eddie barfbag halen.
tell your son to eat a carrot instead of that haagen daaz!

Rothchild | 2/7/2009, 11:41 am EST

Eddie Van Halen is an aquarian idiot. Only an aquarius would let his multi-platinum rock n’ roll band flounder in obscurity for almost a decade before making peace with its original (and overwhelmingly preferred) lead singer. The Michael Anthony issue is just another recent example of Eddie’s ridiculous aquarian grudge-holding. What a fucking TOOL!

thrush82 | 2/7/2009, 12:04 pm EST

Can the kid already. It ain’t Van Halen without Mike, DLR, Alex & Ed. What you’ve got now is Van Half-Ass.

goodbyeboy | 2/7/2009, 1:22 pm EST

special treatment from high school? okay, permanently van halen? sure, whatever floats your boat, but READY FOR JULLIARD?? COME ON!!!!!!

Ward | 2/7/2009, 3:29 pm EST

There is nothing quite like the beautiful chemistry of a rock band that has stuck together for 20, 30, 40 years. The style gets deeper and more magical. When you are lucky enough to have a element as unique as MA’s vocals it is absurd not to include him. Eddie will never realize that all of the elements are equal. The guitar magazine world has filled his mind with nonsense.

Kevin | 2/7/2009, 4:36 pm EST

It cracks me up on how all the haters go on and on about wolfies looks. have you ever looked at Mike ?? The guy is the original Joe Dirt with his mullet sleeveless shirts and trailer park beard . Wolfie proved on tour that he could pull it off and if you think the vocals were piped in then you know the kid can pull it off dispite what all the haters say.The kids got talent and will only get better . Dave Eddie Alex and Wolfie are Van Halen .Van Halen with sammy was Van Half-ass

Anonymous | 2/7/2009, 5:32 pm EST

The recent AC/DC tour, was everything I wanted the last Van Halen tour to be, but wasn’t.

Robert | 2/7/2009, 5:39 pm EST

Typical blathering by no nothings. Let’s talk about people’s looks. Has nothing to do with music. Let’s make fun of a teenager because of his looks. Real adult. Since Eddie is Van Halen, he can define it anyway he wants. If we like it we’ll buy it, if not we won’t. But all of these critics, haters, and loud mouths if you are all so great where is your album? “Canned” vocals “canned” rythym guitars – more like canned wannabe has nothing better to do than criticize. The substance should be the music. Ed should stop talking or being invisible and respond to his fans desire to hear his music. He claims to have written tons of stuff, Ed put it out and then we can stop hearing these nit wits!

M | 2/7/2009, 7:01 pm EST

How old is Eddie now??
63? Good Ole Alcohol.

elc | 2/7/2009, 8:28 pm EST

unfortunately you cannot believe a damn thing that comes out of VH INc these days, havent been for the past decade. they toured the hits last year cause VH needed DLR, DLR needed the dough, AVH needed the dough and Eddie VH stills thinks he holds all the cards in the dwindling VH hand. They ( the VH brothers) continually piss all over the fans and have done for years, and this is coming from one for the past 30 years. It is nothing but embarrasing how this once mighty institution has become a desperate down and out sole trader. Its straight up f##$%^d.

David Waters | 2/7/2009, 10:35 pm EST

The Universe may not be infinite, but one thing is for sure: The capacity of the Van Halen brothers to insult the fans that made them rich!

God! I wish I could pull a “Twilight Zone” on those 2 so they wake up tomorrow in a once-bedroom apartment with one change of clothes, nothing else. I’d do that in a second if I could.

Talk about stabbing Michael Anthony in the back.

Eddie and Al are worthless.

The Truth Commission | 2/8/2009, 4:51 am EST

Michael Anthony was essential to the cool attitude and greasiness of Van Halen through the Roth and Hagar years. His bass guitar and vocals helped define the sound, image and personification of the band in the media. He helped sell records. Now, there’s nobody in the band that can bridge the gap between the fan who sees himself being more like everyman Michael Anthony than the impossibly-gifted Eddie. Michael is even being a total class act now that he’s been dropped even from the album covers apparently. More power to him.

Without Michael and god-knows-who doing vocals, the next Van Halen album will truly be Eddie’s first solo album. It will sound like a self-indulgent Partridge family jam and nobody will care.

And after all this time, don’t you think Eddie would have released an album if he actually had anything left? From the horse’s mouth: “But people expect a certain thing from Van Halen, and this isn’t exactly bang-your-head-against-the-wal l stuff.”

Which is why it will suck. Def Leppard fans have Slang. U2 fans have Pop. Both groups have diehard fans who try valiantly and fail to find some merit in songs those bands have long since given up on. After their experimental hiccups they went right back to the sound that made them. VH’s sound includes Michael Anthony. Period. Van Halen is now a tribute band, a band with a severed limb, like any incarnation of the Beach Boys in the past 30 years. Tribute bands are pathetic.

ROCKBALLS | 2/8/2009, 9:40 am EST

HERE’S A DOSE OF REALITY FOR SOME HERE!
VAN HALEN IS ABOUT 4 MEMBERS NOT ONE.
EVERY MEMBER ADDS HIS OWN UNIQUE VIBE TO THAT FAMOUS TRADEMARK SOUND.
IT’S NOT JUST EDDIE’S GUITAR.
DAVE’S UNIQUE THOUGH JIM DANDY INSPIRED VOCALS, MICHAEL ANTHONY’S SUPREMELY UNIQUE ONE OF A KIND VOICE THAT MADE THOSE TRADEMARK VAN HALEN HARMONIES SO DISTINCT,
ALEX VAN HALEN’S SHARP CRACKLING DRUM SOUND AND RAZOR SHARP EXECUTION, AND EDDIE VAN HALEN’S VIRTUOSO SHREDDING.
SO IF YOU TAKE ONE INGREDIENT OUT OF THE PERFECT MIX THEN IT’S NOT GOING TO BE THE SAME.
IT’S PRETTY EASY TO UNDERSTAND BUT BACKSTABBER EDDIE AND HIS FARTHEADED BRO DON’T GET THAT BECAUSE THEY THINK THEY’RE VAN HALEN BUT THEY ARE SADLY MISTAKEN.
THAT SOUND THAT THEY CREATED IS ONE OF A KIND AND CAN’T BE SUBSTITUTED WITH A UNSEASONED HAAGEN DAZ WHITE CASTLE 24 SLIDER EATING WHALE OF A SON WHO’S AS READY FOR JULLIARD AS EMINEM IS READY TO PLAY A MOZART PIANO CONCERTO.
EDDIE YOU’RE A DICKHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BuckWayne2u | 2/8/2009, 10:30 am EST

It was inevitable that Wolfgang would be part of the band in any capacity. Piss and moan all you want, but Van Halen is what is because they do what pleases them…and ultimately, there are alot of fans that are pleased that a Van Halen line-up is even touring!

Jack | 2/8/2009, 10:44 am EST

I bet that kid got a lot of pussy on tour!

Slooter | 2/8/2009, 11:32 am EST

Who are we to tell the Van Halen’s that another Van Halen cannot join Van Halen?

Anonymous | 2/8/2009, 11:43 am EST

Eddie’s like the dad who coaches the team and lets his kid play no matter what. To the last anonymous you’re so right they will play to half empty arenas. How do you just erase Michael Anthony? Edward you are an out of control ego maniac.

VAN FAN | 2/8/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Here’s a thought: Bring Mike back on bass and have Wolfie play rhythm guitar. That would be the best case scenario at this point. But fact of the matter is that as long as Mike is best buds with Sammy, Ed ain’t letting him back into VH.

Blah | 2/8/2009, 12:51 pm EST

Now if they could only find a Van Halen relative that can sing.

lake monster | 2/8/2009, 12:56 pm EST

History has a way of repeating itself, folks. History shows that Edward communicates with the media only when he has something to sell. That something, of course, is his new line of guitars, strings, straps, amps, tennis shoes and whatever else stands still long enough for him to stripe! And Edward knows there are people who would skip a mortgage payment rather than miss out on the overpriced goods he pimps.

Truth Commission, you mentioned Van Halen’s next CD would be an EVH solo effort. My friend, that has already been done – how can anyone forget the abomination that was Van Halen 3?

I have long gotten over the fact that Michael Anthony was booted from Edward’s band. I believe Mike is in a much better place, surrounded by friends who are able to appreciate his talent.

No doubt, Eddie Van Halen is the flash behind this band. Michael Anthony, however, was the heart and soul of VH.

Carry on, Mikey.

Mike | 2/8/2009, 1:51 pm EST

First of all, take your meds. Don’t want you stroking out posting on RS.

Secondly, when Edward replaces David Lee Roth with Aric Van Halen, let us know how you feel about that.

Thirdly, I for one would not want Mike and Sam back with this dysfunctional mess

Concerned Citizen | 2/8/2009, 8:36 pm EST

It took them how many years to finally reunite with David Lee Roth?

And when it finally happened, they exclude Mike Anthony?

For what? ‘Cause he played some songs with Sammy Hagar?

It’s not like they HAVE to ride in the same tour bus together.

Eddie’s just overcompensating.

P.S. His ex looks hot now that she’s not fat like her hack child.

too bad that sound eddie keeps mentioning when talking about alex’s drums isn’t the only sound of van halen. it’s michael anthony’s voice, too. still waiting for a true vh reunion.

formost. I think they did ok. I went to BOTH concerts here in atlanta, phillips arena sound DID suck ,BUT it was NOT van-halens fault. The sound man sucked. The second show was perfect. personally, i hope the best for them ALL.

“Van Halen is no longer a relevant band.
This will eventually just be a foot note in their wikipedia entry.
Stop living in the 80’s folks.”

A couple of things:
- I’m only 27, and I love Van Halen. I love classic rock in general, but they’re one of my favorites. I doubt someone of my age could be told to stop living in the 80’s.
- What does “relevancy” have to do with music? Is it that they no longer decide the fashion trends? 16 year old girls no longer want to sleep with them? Why do you care what other people think of a band? It doesn’t change the music. Music is music, regardless of supposed “relevance.” If you like it, you like it. Period.

Lots of jealous statements from a bunch of ‘never-was’. Face it, EVH’s kid is on the stage where all you haters only DREAMED to be but never was. He’s 17, toured the world, has money in the bank and is having a great time.

You haters are stuck at a McJob and will never go anywhere. No one has never heard of you nor does anyone care.

A bunch of middle aged wanna-be’s stuck with a fat, used up wife, no job, flat broke, losing your house that you could never afford to begin with. Keep on hating, that’s the only thing you have.

everybody who thinks van halen sucks should just go blow eachother. you should be happy that its eddie and dave. i love the original line up but dave and eddie are the key ingredients the others can be replaced and it would sound the same. the way mike sounded on cd was great but his backing vocals in concert he sounded like a squealing girl. before you say ive never seen them i have seen van halen in every form 17 times so i know what im talking about. dave+eddie=Van Halen

Has EVH been an ass – yes. His brother goes along with him. Family ties- maybe AVH is loyal to him because EVH has provided a career for him so he will never betray him. AVH never plays music with anyone else. As for Wolfie, he is a KID and shame on you people who make fun of his weight. How many of you were GQ models at his age? I am sure the kid can play and maybe is extremely talented. But the comments made because of his weight are juvenile and just cheap shots. Leave the kid out of it. He is not making the decisions.

Arjay | 6/5/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Don’t get me wrong, I loved seeing Van Halen with DLR on the last tour and I’m anxiously awaiting the upcoming album with Roth on vocals. He may not have had the insight to do this because he is a kid, but Wolfie should’ve insisted that Michael Anthony be part of the last tour – so it would be a true reunion – and that he should play on the new record. Despite what Eddie might think, Mikey is a huge part of the Van Halen sound. Both his bass playing and backing vocals. And the fans love him! Wolfie may be talented, but he’s a mediocre bass player at best. Also, wouldn’t Wolfie want to do his own thing? Why ride the coat tales of dear old dad? If he’s such an amazing musician, you’d think he’d want to forge his own way as the next era Van Halen guitar god!

Chatoboy | 7/29/2009, 10:38 pm EST

I think it was wrong to let Mike go. I really don.t think Van Halen will ever be the same without all of the original members.

Joe Voodoo | 9/18/2009, 7:51 pm EST

It will be a good tour, and a good album. One thing my girl stated at the Chickenfoot concert was that she was amazed on how much Michael Anthony’s vocals on the songs really shine. So like Hagar vs Roth in Van Halen (which by the way, both are great, just different) so too will be Van Halen with Wolfie in the Band. Either way I am anxious to hear A REAL FULL ALBUM. I wish the Van Halen camp and Chickenfoot camp forget the drama and just keep bringing out the music. And Yes, Chickenfoot in Tahoe was a F’n great Rockin Show. So too will be Van Halen.

Joe Voodoo | 9/18/2009, 7:56 pm EST

Plus the Drama. Eddie stated that Mike left the band. Which I say. B.S.!!! Remember the tour Eddie, Remember telling Sammy and Mike to forget the Soul Circus project, and anyone remember the B.S. Van Halen did on the Van Halen web page (replacing Mike’s image with Wolfie). And when you buy the Guitar Hero Van Halen video game, it will be Wolfie’s bass you will hear not Mike’s, as a way not to pay Mike any due royalties. Van Halen Loves Drama, because he keeps them in the public mix. Eddie, You were the bad buy, just admit it! You kicked Mike and brought Dave back in because you knew Sammy would not go for that and leave his friend behind.

It was a sad day way back in April 1985.
Thats really when VAN HALEN DIED.
We can remember and appreciate all the tunes they did have for the fans.
All this hoopla about reunions is crap without MA.
I wouldnt go for free to this ensemble.
Thank s for the ORIGINAL ROTH VAN HALEN though!!!!
STILL kicks ASS

1)- EDDIE VAN HALEN CAN CARELESS WHAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT HIS SON, WOLFIE.
2)- $93 MILLION- THE LAST MAJOR TOUR, EDDIE’S NOT WORRIED ABOUT MONEY NOR POPULARITY.
3)- WOLFIE BEEN WOLFING DOWN TOO MANY FRIES, NEEDS TO GO TO FATBOY CAMP, BEFORE ANY TALENT SCHOOLS.
4)- EVENTUALLY, CLASSIC HEAVY METAL GROUPS WILL NOT BE KNOWN BY FUTURE GENERATIONS.
5)- KEEP HAGAR, ROTH, ANTHONY & THE VAN HALENS TOGETHER FOREVER.

STILL RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL!
