Pearl Jam Head to the Studio for 2009 Album

In May, Rolling Stone first reported that Pearl Jam were sketching out songs for their ninth studio album — their first with producer Brendan O’Brien since 1998’s Yield. Now those plans are more concrete: Eddie Vedder and Co. are close to hitting the studio to lay down an album they plan to self-release in the U.S. without a label. “The new record feels good so far — really strong and uptempo, stuff we can sink our teeth into,” Vedder told RS‘ Brian Hiatt when visited the band in Seattle for an in-depth look at the upcoming record — read the full story in the new issue, on newsstands now.

Pearl Jam are also busy readying the deluxe reissue of their 1991 debut, Ten, which his stores March 24th in four editions. When the album came out, David Fricke directed listeners to focus on Vedder’s voice: “a ragged, enraged mongrel blend of Robert Plant and James Hetfield — and the Pearls’ surprising, and refreshing, melodic restraint.”

Looking back at Pearl Jam’s beginnings made us think of the awesome 1993 profile of the band Cameron Crowe wrote for this magazine. Crowe grabbed the band while they were prepping to record their second album, as they casually discussed releasing “Daughter” as a single, and mused on the prospect of blowing up. “If somebody wants to say, ‘You guys used to be my favorite band, but you got too big’ — to me, the problem with getting too big is not, innately, you get too big and all of a sudden you stop playing good music,” Stone Gossard said. “The problem is, when you get too big, you stop doing the things you used to do.” Read the full feature here:

Three words….Hell Fucking Yeah!

TheCoz | 2/5/2009, 7:50 pm EST

I wish the mail would hurry up and deliver my new RS so I can read about what the boys are up to in the studio. I may just have to break out “Single Video Theory” and relive their recording of Yield.

Nothingman | 2/6/2009, 12:27 pm EST

Please, there was nothing worth listening from Pearl Jam since Vitology…

RaleighRick | 2/6/2009, 12:42 pm EST

I’m hip to the excitement & love Pearl Jam, but do we really to type-out so much cursing to make our points?

Hoss | 2/6/2009, 12:49 pm EST

‘09 has barely started and now I know its going to be a good year because Pearl Jam will have a new album out.

While, I’m optimistic that the new U2 will be good, its isn’t going to be better than new Pearl Jam, but the whole world will know about No Line on the Horizon because U2 will spent 15 million to stuff it down everyone’s throat.

There’s a for sure equation with Pearl Jam: New Album + tour = new bootlegs. Hell yeah!!!

simone camargo | 2/6/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Estou super feliz com a notícia!! Amamos Pearl Jam aqui no Brazil. Não vemos a hora de te-los por aqui outra vez.

Still a cutting edge band worth paying close attention too.I love Eddie and the boys.{Please come north of the border again boys!!We love you in Canada!!

capnles | 2/7/2009, 8:36 pm EST

For all they’ve achieved, I still somehow feel that Pearl Jam aren’t given due credit. Somehow, for nearly 20 years, they’ve released music that sounds fresh at the time of release and hasn’t date in subsequent years…. it amazes me that Vitalogy was released nearly 15 years ago, yet doesn’t sound out of place in today’s world.

Maybe, as Hoss suggested previously, they don’t spend enough on marketing. Whatever the reason, we all know this album will be brilliant.

p3arljm | 2/8/2009, 1:00 am EST

a reason to get out of bed in the morning… would it be selfish to ask for the tour to take place after the recession. i must see at least 10 shows per tour…

i know in my heart the boys will know to wait until the time is right…

yousedwhat | 2/8/2009, 3:31 am EST

I’ve seen Pearl Jam many times and have loved most of what they’ve put out on their own albums, but Reign O’er Me is about the deepest and darkest song I’ve heard in a long while and keeps me listening every da#$ time it comes up in my iTunes Party Shuffle, and I keep moving it up for more…

Keep it coming guys, and keep sneaking stuff in where we don’t see it coming.

redlady | 2/8/2009, 5:03 am EST

Wooow you guys still rock after all these years …i really would love to see ya here in Belgium sometime i’ve waited 14 years the first time and now i will wait again hopefully not another 14 years…all the best with ya new album…see ya

PJ10FAN | 2/16/2009, 8:34 pm EST

Nothingman, you seriously believe there has not been PJ material to listen to since Vitology? Seriously??? What are you, a Jonas Brothers Fan now?

MookieB10 | 2/17/2009, 7:21 pm EST

i don’t know if O’Brien had anything to do with the Single Theory Video, but hopefully he can persuade the guys to do that again.

real grunge kid | 3/25/2009, 11:24 am EST

whats up with all u doods dissing on pearl jam..they are one of the best bands still around….everyone compares them to nirvana.. nirvana and pearl jam are in two different categories…dont say pearl jam=teen angst……..pearl jam does not have angry or sad lyrics so shut the fuck up…the people who hate on pearl jam are the coorporate rock whores who listen to the radio and then judge the bands…..PEARL JAM rocks my canadian bacon….dont even talk about anything to do with nirvana when talking abouyt pearl jam…ok u fake ass bitches………………….. ………………………… ………………cant wait for the new album

surf | 3/26/2009, 11:26 pm EST

I’m not ‘Corporate’, and I’m not apart of ‘The Right’. I’m just a guy who likes good music. But what I think is good music you may not. All I’m saying is that when you’re hanging out with your friends and you want to listen to some rock and roll, Pearl Jam is the last band I want to listen to. I want to listen to some up tempo rock not some ‘dark downer’ crap music.
Ten & Versus = good, alright. Then after that Pearl Jam became a Neil Young Cover Band or Tribute Band. No offense to Neil Young.

Anti-Surf | 3/28/2009, 1:28 am EST

Surf you’re implying that Pearl Jam’s music needs to grow up, yet the point you made was because of the fact you don’t like the music – there’s a problem with it.

While Pearl Jam continues to shine, feel free to come up with another rant for me to sigh at.

surf | 3/28/2009, 8:16 pm EST

To: real grunge kid & Anonymous

You say people who don’t care for Pearl Jam music are “the corporate rock whores who listen to the radio and then judge the bands”

I bet your a blue haired skinny little freak who can’t hold a job down, With a bunch of piercings all of your dame body with few dozen tattoos. Plus you probably where those skater pants that look like potato sacks. One pant leg cant fit your whole body. But hey, Green Day wears them so you have too.

And if a band gets to popular then they sold out, right.

You probably want the gov’t to take care of you and give you money and tell you what to do. You probably get mad a rich people because there rich and you’re not.

You far left pro socialism, communism idiots.

surf | 3/28/2009, 8:18 pm EST

Pearl Jam is one of the best bands of all time hands down cant wait for the new album!….for those dissing go listen to your emo crap or the new GnR you probably think thats good too

surf | 3/31/2009, 11:02 am EST

The new Guns N Roses album, Chinese Democracy, is a classic. If you haven’t listened to it, I highly recommend you do. The Chinese Democracy album is so more advanced musically and lyrically then anything Pearl Jam has ever put out.

They don’t repeat the same words over and over throughout the song and their playing more then two chords.

Chinese Democracy was worth the wait.

james | 3/31/2009, 3:26 pm EST

The new gnr album hahaha! that’s funny gnr its a mediocre band, i never liked then i dont think i will, better than pearl jam no i dont think they are! specially with the jerk as frontman as is Axel. I dont event cant stand when he sings! Good try surf, but it seems Gnr album its not that good as you said!

TexasBaldGuy | 4/1/2009, 4:38 pm EST

I am far from the political views that Pearl Jam has, however I only feel good and feel like I am listening to real music when I am listening to Pearl Jam, the band. That is real music, no frills, strait up rock for the soul. Too many bands are giving up and going with a computer-technical sound. I can’t wait for the new album and yes I have seen them in Australia and the U.S.- GO PJ!

Surf Sucks | 4/2/2009, 1:56 am EST

Surf, you continue to enforce the point that Pearl Jam is a band only a disgruntled teen would enjoy listening to and yet, for some reason, you never back this point up. Your main argument seems to be that Pearl Jam is band simply because you no longer like them anymore. Likely you’re one of the people who group Pearl Jam in with all of the other 90’s bands which originated out of Seattle.

Your next major argument is that they’re bad because “all” of their lyrics are sad and depressing. Some of their lyrics are; I’ll agree with that. However, the lyrics are not repetitive nor does their tone automatically create bad music. Some Beatles songs have sad lyrics. Would you shit on the Beatles like you shit on Pearl Jam? Come up with a way to properly validate your points before you speak.

surf | 4/2/2009, 5:38 pm EST

Don’t even try to compare Pearl Jam to the Beatles.

“you enforce the point that Pearl Jam is a band only a disgruntled teen would enjoy and yet you never back this point up”

A: Listen to Vitalogy, Yield, No Code, Binaural, Riot Act, & Pearl Jam. And even Ten & Versus.
Plus i remember watching an interview with the bassist and even he said, “on record we may seem kind of melancholy but you have to see us live”. I seen them live, eh.

“you’re one of the people who group Pearl Jam in with the other 90’s bands which originated out of Seattle”
A: Pearl Jam did come out in the 90’s and did come out of Seattle. But the bands in the 90’s that came out of Seattle didn’t play rock music. It was alternative music. How gay.

“the lyrics are not repetitive nor does their tone automatically create bad music”
A: The lyrics are not repetitive. Have you listened to Pearl Jam music? Granted lyrics will repeat in a song but PJ take it to the nth degree.

I think of a great band like Creedence Clear Water Revival, not fancy but with a combination of good beats, good rhythm, and great lyrics came up with a bunch of classic songs that still rock today.

I’m not saying PJ’s tone automatically creates bad music but I am saying in most of there songs they create a KumBaYah sound. And that other bands produce a far more sophisticated sound then they do. Example: Guns N’Roses – Chinese Democracy.

Hey if you can Rock out to Pearl Jam, by all means do so. Then when you’re finished you and your friends can cry on each others shoulders while you’re hugging each other. Then you can question why you’re here and how bad the gov’t is and how you and you’re small group of friends are the only ones who “get it” because every else is a clone and so beneath you.

pj4life | 4/4/2009, 10:05 pm EST

now, all of you down playing pearl jam are naive retards. pearl jam is one of the greatest bands ever. over time, as each band member has grown as people, their music has grown with them. They have such an immense broad horizon of music. those saying its all depressed and melancholy really dont know a damn thing about pearl jam. try to actually listen to the lyrics! and there songs display emotion, every emotion known to man. they sound great playing love, angry, loud, soft..ect..songs.they have an obscure, ORIGINAL SOUND. if they arent so good, how come its been almost 20 years theyve been jammin…long and hard. you anti-pj people, i feel bad for you and the people around you who have to listen to the trash you listen to since you obviously have a very poor taste in music

dennis | 4/5/2009, 1:26 am EST

personally, i’d rather stay in the fertile gutter of perpetual teenage angst than grow into the post-adolescent “adulthood” characterized by the alcohol-fueled and drug-induced hedonism for which bands like GnR are most well known.

Marcos Silva | 4/15/2009, 9:18 am EST

friedeggsandhamsamiam | 4/19/2009, 7:30 pm EST

I cant believe you actually rate chinese democracy LMAO!!! Has to be the biggest let-down album EVER. I say that because gnr were once capable of great music – im suprised they eventually released C.D. & tarnished their otherwise good name

surf | 4/20/2009, 10:39 pm EST

riedeggsandhamsamiam your

“surprised they eventually released C.D. & tarnished their otherwise good name”

The album did take quite some time to be released but there were unavoidable delays with members leaving, poor production, & management. But they finally did it. Lesson to be learned: “don’t put your life on hold” – axl.

You think the Cd tarnished their otherwise good name. Did you even listen to the album. It’s probably one of the best rock & roll albums ever.

I wanted to give PJ another chance. Maybe I was a little to hard on them. So I was listening to Pearl Jam a few weeks. Nothing has changed. They really are a dark depressing band. Maybe you have to be a depressed not to notice. Or like rainy days instead of sunny days. I don’t know.

Pearl Jam = buzz kill

KillYourInternet | 4/25/2009, 3:15 pm EST

fact 1: Pearl Jam are a great band with an amazing vocalist

fact 2: The internet, ipod, and our youtube, myspace reality is underming art and culture, and is probably most responsible for the death of great art forms like rock, jazz, classical, etc. etc.

BB | 4/30/2009, 11:01 am EST

I’m a huuuge PJ fan, and I’m seeing them at ACL. But come on. Aside from Slight of Hand, DTE, and a handful of songs off of Riot Act, PJ’s post-Vitalogy career has been average at best. Specially with their self-titled last release being a wash. That’s why 15 years later, and the biggest responses they get are over songs from their first 4 years as a band.

scarbino | 4/30/2009, 7:25 pm EST

wow…this debate has all kinds of craziness in it from people who like PJ being far left socialists to people who dislike them being right wing corporate assholes. I don’t think either has to do with PJ. I have to be a conservative republican who can’t stand PJ’s political views but I absolutely love their music and have since TEN came out. Those who like PJ realize they have done something that many bands haven’t done. Stand the test of time. And they still, to this day, sell out all of their concerts. Something that can’t be said for many bands of any era. Such as Gn’R…I have heard the new Guns and Roses and it is a far cry from Appetite for Destruction…They are nothing compared to PJ. Also, some of you “educated” anti pj fans…please learn english…

Thanks.

Saman | 5/4/2009, 4:00 am EST

Pearl Jam Rock! Admittedly, their first 3 albums were strides ahead of the ‘different’ direction they went with with albums after them.. But having said that, they had already released 3 amazing rock albums and fair enough they decided to branch out and try new things.. G&Rs were a great band in the Appetite and Illusion days, but went downhill after that… Plus Axl = tool and Eddie = awesome :-) Can’t wait to see them live in Australia!

Nothingman | 5/19/2009, 11:24 pm EST

JT MONEY | 5/22/2009, 5:10 pm EST

The only people who knock PJ are the ones who can only tell you the name of ONE song from any band. They are fair weather music listeners.
I will say Guns and Roses was a great band but unfortunately they didn’t have the creative power to last. So much music today is cosmetic, window dressing. PJ always brought the raw energy baby!

Vita-logy | 5/22/2009, 9:29 pm EST

I don’t know why people say they haven’t done anything great since Vitalogy. The self titled Pearl Jam album is GREAT. Each album delves into a different aspect of their musical influences. I love No Code and Yield. Each of these albums are very interesting artistically. I don’t know if it’s different for those that don’t play music, but, as a guitarist, the diversity and intricacy of each of their albums is pretty amazing. The albums are layered, but raw-complex, but simplified. I don’t know how they do it. The only other bands that I get that from are The Beatles and The Rolling Stones (and not always with The Stones). Riot Act is not an album I love, but it has some strong songs. I think other longstanding bands from the early to mid-90s (Green Day, Soundgarden, etc.) have less quality work. PJ, however, has released a ton of albums. They have more to criticize, but that’s because they have always been experimental and let their fans choose which songs they enjoy, rather than commercial radio or MTV. Say what you will, but I think PJ is one of the only truly GREAT bands of my generation. And, they will be forever recognized as such. I can’t wait for their new album.

Chris | 6/1/2009, 1:32 am EST

Complex, sincere and thoughtful music always comes from this band. Pearl Jam is a band that focuses solely on their music, they are true artists who have evolved in a very complex way. Each album offers a different flavor. Even the albums that I personally don’t like as much (Binaural, No Code) are good albums that I still enjoy. Look at another rock band like, say, U2, who always seems to be so, so, so VERY intwined with their image. Like most popular music these days. It’s not just the music, it’s the image and blah blah blah. I just want good music, good art = give me Pearl Jam!

jim jarmusch | 6/2/2009, 12:13 am EST

naysayers: pearl jam is the best band…& dont give me the “pearl jam…has beens”..just look the facts: 1.- they dont follow tendencies 2.- loyal fan base 3.-they are way better live act than all this mumble-jumble shit from today bands…for example:linkin park were stroked with the “imagine in cornice” live act..they thought linkin park was a pretty shitty live act & recognized their mediocre production values on their dvds after they saw that…can you figure out?… 3.- most pj albums sounds fresh today..brendan obrien brings crisp sound & top quality to pj..…plus pj is more diverse on their albums than most bands out there..actually they have ROCK ALBUMS…you can hear influence coming from the who to zeppelin to neil young to ramones in pj albums…you name it…no shit albums like these emo-new wave shit for kids..like green day or chemical romance 4.-they are more punk than most punk bands..just look at the ticketmaster law suit..as cameron crowe recalls today: “they lost but that was too punk for a popular band coming from that era….eddie vedder acted like a modern day version of joe strummer with an injection of iggy pop & neil young through his veins…pj really is the thing..theyre the personification of an old…great last rock band” 5.- dont even think to give me the “pearl jam vanished after ten”..yes…pj sells dropped because they stopped making less videos or trying too hard with the media or MTV.…but fuck..even with that situation…pj sold more than most rock bands from that era..including giants like smashing pumpkins, radiohead, green day, oasis & metallica…you figure out…true fucking facts…via RIAA,rolling stone, pitchfork, numerous polls, indy magazines, etc…so ps: a sincere “fuck you” to every single fan of the jonas bros, green day..or shit like that!..fucking period

Besos | 6/12/2009, 9:14 pm EST

I saw their performance on the first live taping of the Tonight Show with Conan and it was truly amazing. I am so excited about the release of this new album, I can hardly stand the anticipation. Pearl Jam, I love you!

surf,’The Chinese Democracy album is so more advanced musically and lyrically then anything Pearl Jam has ever put out.’

Eddie vedder is consistently in the top 20 lyricists of all time!!!
His songs inspire people of all ages and personalities, from your image of a angry teen to whatever age!

simple fact is good music appeals to all

Besos, are you serious! I just listened to the new song “Get Some”.

That song sucked. This truly is the beginning of the end of Pearl Jam.

This will probably be their last album.

Vedder looks fat and old. no offense

Sounds like the same old Pearl Jam.

Take Guns n Roses’ Chinese Democracy,They reinvented themselves with that album. The sound is heavier more bluesy but still rock n roll. Probably the best album they put out.

Pearl Jam songs sound to much the same. They don’t rock out anymore like on Ten. They’ve cemented themselves in the folk bluegrass sound. I don’t think there’s any going back now.

I bet Vedder comes out with another solo album after this one and then stays solo. The band won’t officially break up.

Did someone write up there that the new Guns ‘n Roses Album was great and that compared to that Pearl Jam sucks?!?!? Funny, very funny… There are strange people in this world… I’ll see PJ live in 2 weeks and it will be awesome :)

I just heard 3 songs from the new Pearl Jam album.

Holy Shit, They’re not even trying anymore. Backspacer, more like Backburner. I think this album is a collection of songs they wrote throughout the years that were never released. So they decided to make an album out of them.

No originality, no pushing the envelope, no pushing themselves to create better and different sounds and lyrics.

A lazy half ass album, from what I heard so far.

I like Pearl Jam. Though I don’t agree with their politics.

I think this album is going to be a fun, rock n roll album. It’s not going to be as deep as the last album. But that’s fine. It’s a change of direction. Not every album has to blow your mind.

I like Guns n Roses too.

Quote from my facebook favorite music section music section:

Pearl Jam…*(before their music became riddeled with self righteous political anthems).

Politics is is a great inspiration for art, music, and films. However, I miss the pearl jam of old that would make me stop thinking of things that are so trivial and all over the news everyday. Like old woman behind the counter in a small country store… to me talks about the metamorphosis we all have. Oh well, I just wish I could still listen to their old stuff without feeling like they have changed.
