The Cramps’ Frontman Lux Interior Dead at 62

2/4/09, 10:57 pm EST

Lux Interior, the frontman for iconic punk band the Cramps, died today, February 4th, at the Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, California. Interior, born Erick Lee Purkhiser, was 62 and is survived by his wife of 37 years, Cramps guitarist Kristy “Poison Ivy Rorschach” Wallace. In a statement released by the band’s publicist, a preexisting heart condition is named as the cause of death.

The Cramps first made their mark in the mid-1970s, when Interior, Poison Ivy and a revolving door rhythm section frequented the stages at famed New York punk clubs like CBGB and Max’s Kansas City alongside artists like Television, the Ramones, Blondie and Patti Smith. The band eventually recruited drummer Nick Knox in 1977, who remained with the group until 1991. During those years, the Cramps were credited with creating both the term and musical style “psychobilly,” a synthesis of punk rock and rockabilly that was gloriously raw and over the top. Their lyrics examined American culture at its most campy, often citing bad jokes, science fiction films and sexual fetishes.

(Listen to a Cramps playlist and check out vintage photos here.)

The Cramps went on to record singles with Big Star’s Alex Chilton and signed to I.R.S. Records in 1977. But it was the stage where the band truly made its name, with Interior grabbing the spotlight with Iggy Pop-esque antics. The band famously played a free show for the patients at the California State Mental Hospital in 1978, which was probably their perfect venue. “Somebody told me you people are crazy, but I’m not so sure about that. You seem to be all right to me,” Interior screamed from the stage (watch footage from the gig above).

In his 1984 review of Cramps comp Bad Music For Bad People, Kurt Loder wrote, “This is rock & roll the way it never really was on the radio, but the way you always dreamed it could be — drooling horrorama lyrics, great cheesoid guitar riffs, postlobotomy drum-bashing and a singer for whom inhibition is the dirtiest ten-letter word of all. Slurp it up, sleaze fans.”

The Cramps released classics like 1979’s Songs the Lord Taught Us and 1981’s Psychedelic Jungle. The group’s last album of new material was 2003’s Fiends of Dope Island. Over the years, the Cramps’ music has been covered by the Jesus & Mary Chain, Queens of the Stone Age and the countless more bands the Cramps inspired.

“Lux was a fearless frontman who transformed every stage he stepped on into a place of passion, abandon, and true freedom. He is a rare icon who will be missed dearly,” the statement reads. “The family requests that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Thanks for everything you’ve given us, Lux.

Love and deepest sympathy to Ivy.

Lux Interior was a true one off. A great frontman of one of the most exciting and original bands to emerge from the punk era. He showed real freedom of expression in his own unique style of performance, which in my opinion represented true abandonment and hedonism. Songs like “Bikini Girls with Machine Guns”, “Does your pussy do the dog”, “All Women are dad” etc were awesome and I thought there were very few bands who could produce such excellent material. You’ll be sadly missed Lux. My deepest condolences to Kristy and everyone who was touched by your music.

Lux was one of the best frontmen EVER. He understood rock and roll and what it could BE better than most people can even begin to comprehend. I met Lux and Poison Ivy before a show in Ohio, and they were the best, no pretense, just fabulously cool and having fun, no matter what. I heard the news driving after hearing a Cramps song on my radio, and I just screamed. Only the best cause reactions like I’ve seen online—–they were REAL. Rock on.

I’ve been listening the Cramps since about 1982 and I was sad to hear…
I never took the time to go see The Cramps live…now I have a regret in life. Another reason to give up my habit of procrastination.

Stay Sick is on of the best rock albums ever for me.

My condolences to Miss Ivy, her family, Lux’s family and the other band members.

God bless them for filling my life with great music.

I can’t bear to think of Poison Ivy without Lux. The Cramps have been my favorite band since I can remember. They inspired me to become a musician, have dirtier sex, and stay sick. I don’t know what we’ll do without him. This is the saddest song played on any guitar.

Carlos | 2/5/2009, 11:33 am EST

I liked The Cramps better than the bands that inspired them AND the bands that were inspired by them. They were a perfect synthesis of all things gloriously prurient. Sorely missed.

Words honestly cannot describe the sadness I feel over this news. I missed them the last time they came around and I foolishly thought, “Well, they’ll be back around next spring.” WHen I heard the news, I immediately broke out “Elvis F*****g Christ” and blasted the neighborhood. Tomorrow, I will get good and wasted, crank up “Big Beats from Badsville” and bang filthy leather-clad sluts until my ding ding rots off form some tauwdry social disease. It’s what Lux would want to happen.

I think it might have been Lux’s autobiographical song — the Mid-West Monster.
One of the greatest bands of all time. Why the hell didn’t the rock and roll hall of fame do the right thing and induct these guys when he was alive?

Rhett of Snuff Film Fest | 2/5/2009, 12:51 pm EST

I have been a huge Cramps fan for a long time and this is very sad news. The Cramps are far more influential then they have ever gotten credit for. It’s nice to see that so many new musicians site them as a reference point.

I know that their roots in early rock and super-cool imagery played a major part in my own decision to pick up an instrument and start recording. They took the nostalgic and the “tongue in cheek” of pop culture and turned into something weird and meaningful- Like a pornographic encyclopedia of the cheesy. They were total true Rock’N'Roll journeymen (and women) because they did this thing for so long because they felt it deep.

I like to think that Lux is with Bryan Gregory now, with not much clothes on, ripping through the classics with full on Fuzz distortion for eternity. FULL RESPECT TO LUX, POISON, BRYAN, & CONGO: YOU WERE THE SOUNDTRACK TO MY LIFE!

RIP to one of the true greats
Love and condolences to Ivy.

What a loss. The Cramps, besides being a great, fun band had a vast knowledge and love of the history and underlying joy of rock and roll. More than any other band I listened to in the early 80s, The Cramps acquainted me with genres and artists I was vastly unfamiliar with: rockabilly, 60s “garage punk”, Charlie Feathers, Jack Scott, The Rumblers, etc. Many of these artists, Hasil Adkins to name one, had their careers relaunched as a result of The Cramps’ devotion.

The Cramps deserve as much praise as any wealthy bibliophile who has rescued precious texts from oblivion and preserved them in a meaningful collation for new generations.

I was lucky enough to see them at Club Nu in Miami Beach in the late 80’s and always looked forward to catching them again. Sadly, its not to be. Condolenses to Ivy.

Fond memory: Watching him climb up on the huge PA at the 9:30 club, remove his stilleto heel, reem a gallon’s worth of sweat from his sock into his mouth, and then promptly share the rest with the audience. Always with a smile. Many Thanks for a good time

Neil | 2/6/2009, 5:07 pm EST

Adios to one of the greatest frontmen in history, someone who understood that catharsis is the most important element of a rock and roll show. Thanks for some awesome memories, Lux.

Love the Cramps and was shocked and saddened at the news. Lux was one of a kind and will truly be missed. Thanks for all the great music and my thoughts are with Ivy and family. The REAL king of rock ‘n roll!

Where are the Santana songs? Black magic women is one of the finest guitar songs of all time.
REELING IN THE YEARS BY Steely Dan is the greatest guitar riff ever written and neither of these great tunes made your list I do not get it

Anonymous | 2/7/2009, 2:50 pm EST

This one hurts. There will never be another one like him. Thank you Lux. Your bones will be rockin’ long after your gone. Stay sick. Everybody stay sick. He’d like that.

L.A.livin | 2/7/2009, 2:54 pm EST

Ivy-
My deep condolences. Thanks to you and Lux, I always laugh when I tell my preschool kids “don’t eat stuff off the sidewalk. I just have to add “you don’t need it so don’t eat it” and they know mom is weird. I hope that you realize that all the satire of God is just a joke and he is real and heaven is real and beautiful and fun.

What a shame it took this tragic event to finally make Rolling Stone write about this truly amazing person/band. Never were The Cramps given a mention before. Shame on you RS. Lux RIP. Love to Ivy xx

cookiedd | 2/7/2009, 6:03 pm EST

Lux will be sorely missed…..Anyone who was lucky enough to see one of their over-the top, loud, in your face rubber writhing, stage rolling, microphone swallowing, tongue lapping exhibitionism MISSED IT!

the greatest frontman My condolences to Ivy.
Thanks for making me stay sick and ruining my life. I grew up listening to the Cramps, and thanks to them, I discovered Hazil Adkins, Link Wray or Ronnie Dawson and their world of pin-ups and serial-killers or film-maders like ed wood.
I had the chance to see them on stage in spain and i´ll never forget that day.
It´s a very sad week. I´m very sorry

Gothdave | 2/9/2009, 10:44 pm EST

I am so sad! Some people say that they remember the day John Lennon died – I don’t – the day Lux died will always have more meaning. I only wish the best for Ivy and the rest of his family. He embodied all of what good music should be and will be very dearly missed!
Always in my prayers,

Crap. Another one gone. Robert Orr (1887 – ?) wrote, “They are not dead who live in hearts they leave behind.”

Feb 2 1979 – Sid Vicious; Feb 3 1959 – The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly; Feb 4 2009 – Lux Interior. Lux is in good rockin’ company by dates in February.

I heard ‘Human Fly’ by The Cramps in about 1984 and that hooked me in one. I saw The Cramps at Festival Hall, Melbourne, 19th August 1986; Lux climbed a speaker stack, stripped down to a leopard skin g-string (or similar) and made interesting noises sucking the microphone in his mouth – before Ivy got him to climb down and she escorted him off stage.

:-) A love story in Rock&Roll with no comparison, or competition, with the crankin’est soundtrack of all time.

Our hearts are with you, Ivy.

Beenthardonethat | 2/10/2009, 9:44 am EST

Yeah, where were all the Cramps’ inteviews in Rolling Stone? Hmmm…let’s search the archives, ooops, guess you missed out on that one, little too late to jump on the old bandwagon, like about thirty years too late…

i still and will not get over this. one of the best bands to see live will never come around. :(
I’ll never forget, one of the few times i saw them, as soon as they hit the stage the crowd went mental.
beer and water poured all over me,cigarettes flying in the air, my friends on LSD…you could smell the weed burning and this one guy pouring cocaine down his nose all by the second song. At the end of the show i was all beat-up and covered in sweat, i had the best time.
thanks for the memories

It has taken me a while to be able to put into words how I feel about Lux’s death.
Like many hardcore Cramps fans I have been a goo goo muck for a very long time.
26 of my 43 years have been musically consumed by Lux and Ivy. 7 times I waited
anxiously in front of the stage for Lux to walk out bend the mic stand into a pretzel,
look me in the eye and scream,” You ain’t no punk, you punk!!!!”

He was bigger than life to me on stage….A Godmonster from the endof the world,
A full-tilt non-stop It-Thing Hard on, Two fisted Gun Totin’ Six-Shootin’ Ringtailed Buckaroo!!
Lux was rock n’ roll to me. He was Gene Vincent, Ghoulardi, and Caligula all rolled into one.
Off stage he was the kindest, most endearing, and genuine person I have ever met in the
music world. His musical influence is far reaching and will touch rock n’ roll forever.

To Ivy: please know how many people love you and care about you. Kepp rockin’
that Gretsch…like a bad girl should. Birthday love to you today 2/20.

MandoRock | 2/28/2009, 2:23 am EST

Never forget when I first saw Lux & Poison Ivy open for The Police in DC at The Ontario Theater circa 79′. They hit the stage so hard that when the “headliners” came on Sting & the Boys were almost booed into oblivion( remember this was at the height of the Polices’ career} The spit & cum drenched crowd just wanted more & more goo goo muck from the Ultimate Garbage Man. I remember leaving the show feeling like this is Fucking ROCK & ROLL, being drained of all energy & inabitions & any and all drugs I was on. This was pure FUN & FREEDOM. Ivy, know that you & Lux gave us nothing but pleasure from the get go. Luv you 4ever.

Doobs | 3/8/2009, 11:06 am EST

Late posting cos I only heard last night – cryed for you today Lux. Paridiso in 86 was a lifetime highlight. Always showed us how far can too far go. See you in hell.

Just heard today as I’ve been cut off from most reality for many months now. Staying Sick and very sad for Ivy and the whole Cramps family. My 18 yo son is as much a fan as me, we always wanted to go see them play, but that’s OK, he already knows what it would be like. He’s a kid who, on his 17th BD, bought me a gift – Cramps at Napa State DVD.. Now if we can just find the Cramps at the California Theater bootleg DVD, he could see his own mama rock with Lux in the front row.

Lux, you changed my life and made it worthwhile. Ivy, you taught me just exactly whoat I needed to know to live just like a bad girl should.

Off to put on the purple one, with the plumes. Upside down of course. And maybe, just maybe when I die, someone will buy me a diamond ring.

My thought are with you Ivy. You came, you saw, and then you created the rockin’ bones moster that we needed so badly. It’s been said that the only reason that the month of February even exists is to make the world shiver, and a glace shows that only to good die in that wretched month.

I’ll be thinking of you both and will always remember that one most important lesson taught by you and Lux:

“Play Loud”

Boppin Bob | 6/2/2009, 6:45 pm EST

Gutted, really gutted. Lux said Rock n Roll should offend your parents. Mine were appalled. Job well done Lux. Thanks for showing me a whole world of music.

Manchester Apollo, six bottles of wine and broken glass torn across your chest. That’s how to leave an impression on a young mind.

He may be gone but the legacy and spirit will never die.

Thanks.
