Rolling Stone’s New Critic: Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump

Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump has been in Rolling Stone before — he’s even been on our cover. But the Sean Penn issue hitting newsstands today marks the first time the singer-guitarist has written for the magazine: Yes, Stump reviewed the forthcoming CD/DVD The Ultimate Peter Tosh Experience under the byline P.V. Stump for Issue 1072.

“It’s insane to say, but I never planned on being a singer,” Stump tells Rolling Stone. “The thing I really wanted to do was write about music; it’s what I planned on doing when I went to college.” Stump says he grew up with a subscription to Rolling Stone and spent hours listening to radio shows hosted by Chicago critics Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis.

When Stump visited our offices late last year, he confessed he’d always wanted to review albums for RS — so we put him to work. Why Peter Tosh? “I had a huge ska and reggae phase in junior high, so he’s always been a background character in my study of music,” Stump says. In his four-star review, Stump writes, “If Bob Marley was reggae’s Bob Dylan, Peter Tosh was its MC5: less accessible, more cocky and a whole hell of a lot more dangerous.”

Even though Stump is currently overseas with Fall Out Boy and the band will be hitting the road Stateside in the coming months, he’s already got his next assignment. Check back to follow Stump’s budding career as a critic, and enjoy his first review here:

Someone who makes crappy albums should not be allowed to review albums.

Matt | 2/4/2009, 7:22 pm EST

…aaaand I hope Stump realizes that his reviews are never going to be given a chance, because of people like Kepp.

Personally, I’ll wait to read several reviews before I decide his worth as a writer.

Kepp Sucks | 2/4/2009, 7:48 pm EST

First off, FAD wasn’t crappy. Second off, he’s the main talent in his band. Third off, you’re a hater, or a troll. GTFO.

ChiliPepper | 2/4/2009, 7:50 pm EST

I guess I was just trying to avoid it. Ignorance is indeed bliss. This, however, is just another nail in the Rolling Stone coffin. When will Rolling Stone go back to its roots, following the music that defines generations. This may be a nonsenical rant, I can’t tell if it’s going to be yet, but work with me here…

I have no personal vendetta against Patrick Stump (more so Pete Wentz and his pro-looks/publicity over sound agenda). Maybe it’s even jealously out of which I speak, as I have always wanted to write for Rolling Stone. I have a hard time believing though that someone like Stump should be dictating what is/isn’t good music. FOB is a band that shot to glory by abandoning their roots (punk) and conforming to the standards of awful pop-punk music. Worst of all, in the process they left behind the scene. They used the scene to gain attention and as soon as the mainstream media picked them up, FOB disowned the scene like a bad child.

Rolling Stone should be asking artists like Jonny Greenwood, Jack White, Danger Mouse, Dave Sitek, and Flea to do reviews if they want to have legitimate musicians doing reviews. I’ve read too many times, though, that bands like FOB are the voice of this generation. I hate to say it, but if bands like Fall Out Boy are in fact the voice of my generation, though, then kill me sirrah.

amy | 2/4/2009, 7:58 pm EST

@kepp: i’m sure rolling stone will take your opinion into their consideration seeing as they obviously haven’t thought over this decision already. and music is way too subjective for you to legitimately say their albums are “crappy”

Chris | 2/4/2009, 8:23 pm EST

Hey Rolling Stone: I want to review albums too. Is being a multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated artist in a band adored by millions and hated by just as many a prerequisite, or just encouraged?

Robb Whitey | 2/4/2009, 9:07 pm EST

If we got an honest review of Folie a Douche from rock’s version of Lumpy Rutherford here, then I may be inclined to read other reviews of his.

dude | 2/4/2009, 10:40 pm EST

to ChiliPepper…it’s “kill me Sarah”…not “sirrah”. anyways, i hate FOB as much as any sane person…but maybe the guy can write reviews…we’ll see. However, if he stays on the payroll and keeps writing, he better not write any bad reviews on any of the bands that i like…or i’ll hate him and RS forever.

Sean | 2/5/2009, 12:20 am EST

He’s not bad, actually.

alice | 2/5/2009, 1:59 am EST

So what if he’s in Fall Out Boy? It should be the writing and reviews you’re bothered about, not whether he’s in a “crappy” band. Not that I see FOB as crappy. And yes, they are one of the voices of our generation, so get over yourselves please.

What BS!! | 2/5/2009, 9:03 am EST

I have been a music critic for many years and RS never printed any of my stuff. I guess I too should have joined a lame ass band and then I could joined the staff!!

RS is a joke and this just proves it!!

Griff | 2/5/2009, 11:40 am EST

Alice, if Fall Out Boy is the voice of your generation, I weep openly for you.

8080808 | 2/5/2009, 12:38 pm EST

Fall Out Boy are most definitely NOT the voice of a generation. Not to anyone that actually LIKES music.

Let’s just stop that idea right here and now.

Lola | 2/5/2009, 12:59 pm EST

I’m not a fan of Fall Out Boy, but I don’t think you should judge the man on what bands he’s in or what music he makes or the scene he apparently ‘abandoned’, you should judge him on how good or how bad his writing is.

And plus any critic is just putting across their point of view on one thing, you don’t have to like what they say. It doesn’t matter whether they are an experienced, respected critic or if they’re the vocalist in a ’shitty’ band.

Ylisza | 2/5/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Respect. That’s all.

Ylisza | 2/5/2009, 1:15 pm EST

Respect. That’s all.

luiza sedrim | 2/5/2009, 1:28 pm EST

YEAH!!!

patrick,
just do not talk nonsense! :|

kepp | 2/5/2009, 4:44 pm EST

I think the point that many of you are missing, is that he would not be reviewing albums if he was not in a megapopular band. That is why I am not judging him on how well he writes, but on the basis of how he got this job. And I realize that music is subjective, but popular music has gotten so bad over the last 15 years. Fall Out Boy is so harsh and annoying-sounding. Whiiinny. And it is so simple. I don’t know how to play bass and I could play that pretty boy’s bass lines.

Mandy (from Brasil) | 2/5/2009, 7:03 pm EST

When I read the review in the magazine, I DIDN’T KNOW THAT Patrick Stump, from Fall Out Boy, was the author. I think it was a very good review, gracious, very expressive, tasteful, and very professional. I also think that everything that we make with dedication and love, turns into a pretty awesome work.
I liked very much. CONGRATULATIONS TO P.V.STUMP. I hope he continues.

(*Waves White Flag*)

People! People!
Can’t we all just get along?

I have to admit, I have long had a great respect for Patrick and his knowledge of music (just for the record, Fall Out Boy IS going to be one of the few bands this decade that people will actually remember)…But even though Fall Out Boy, unfortunately, has as many haters as they do fans, “true” music fans shouldn’t base their opinion of Patrick’s writing on what they think about his band, or the “scene”. It should be about the writing itself.

As big of a RS fan as I am, I have yet to see single review that I have agreed with completely, no matter who has written it (I mean, who HAS?). No matter what you think of FOB, or the “scene”, Patrick IS, in fact, a musician, and a music lover, just like anyone else, so he deserves the exact same kind of chance as any other RS writer would, doesn’t he?

dude | 2/6/2009, 11:15 am EST

well shit, FOB is definitely the voice of my generation…and i’m going to gladly murder my children if they ever get into that shitty excuse for music.
GLADLY!

dude | 2/6/2009, 11:17 am EST

i’m sorry…definitely *NOT*

ELIZABETH | 2/6/2009, 1:35 pm EST

DONT JUDGEHIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! !!!Just beacsue he’s patrick stump and u judge his music badly doesnt mean he cant decide what is good and whaT IS BAD. IF he wasnt in fob them he ould be doing this for a living and every one would like it. i thought the review was well done. DONT JUDGE HIM

dude | 2/6/2009, 8:03 pm EST

elizabeth, you are one insane girl…and no, patrick is not a person, and i’ll judge him all i want….you probably are patrick stump. i never get judged, because i’m so cool. and fob is the gayest band alive.

Payton | 2/9/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Hmmm.
wow.
It’s amazing how we can take this article and turn it into “how much FOB sucks” conversation.
If you’re a FOB fan, then great.
If you’re NOT, that’s great.
Just don’t go putting people down because they don’t like the same bands as you. I just think it’s downright immature.
This is just my opinion.
Just do what your conscience tells you to do.

just saying…..

Sarah | 2/10/2009, 5:50 am EST

Amazing! He is such a talented person/intelligent person. It drives me crazy in a good way.

I love you Patrick! I am up for reading anything you have to say always.

I still want to know why people come to eead these articles just to post rude comments about how much they “hate fall out boy!”.

Get original.

I’d have to say Fall Out Boy is by far my favorite band in the world… But, if you disagree maybe you should realized Patrick Stump is his own person. Value that.

Taylorr! | 2/10/2009, 6:01 am EST

Alright Aright.

I bet if Patrick Stump used some anonymous name as he’s writing you’d all be pleased.

Just because he is in Fall Out Boy, you all have to completely go crazy. I will never get why everyone LOVES to hate that band so much. Have you heard Patrick Stump Sing? AMAZING.

I swear it’s jealousy. They are unique, catchy, interesting, talented… They are a quality band and after listening to them it’s hard to listen to any other “newer” band without thinking its just noise.

If i was them i’d of lost it, and probably killed everyone by now. HAHA, everyone is so immature. LEAVE THEM ALONE AND LET THEM DO WHAT THEY LOVE.

But anyways, I thought the article was great!
I am looking forward to anything else he writes. ;]

Boardies OWN | 2/10/2009, 3:53 pm EST

Patrick V. Stump(h) is so talented. He is an amazing producer and musician. He is amazing and doesn’t get as much credit as he deserves.

carly | 2/10/2009, 7:29 pm EST

…i am a patrick stump completist, so not only do i appreciate his music, when he writes or speaks, it’s always phenomenal. the way he talks is always so intelligent, so having him write for rolling stone’s cd reviews is a wise choice. you can tell he loves everything he does, so why can’t you all just respect that. he’s a great performer and i’m sure he’ll be an awesome addition to the magazine because he has heart in everything he does.

Fanatics... | 2/24/2009, 5:13 pm EST

Not fans. Thats what some of you seem like. You don’t know this man, so you shouldn’t act like you do. I have a friend who’s the bass player in a (great) band on F.O.B.’s level. He knows Mr. Stump and happens not to think as highly of him as the rest of you. But then again, he actually knows Stump…

Rachel | 2/24/2009, 9:25 pm EST

Guys, just because you hate FOB doesn’t mean that you have to trash Patrick. He really knows a great deal about music; you can tell. A dude who wanted to review records for RS since he was a kid…doesn’t that sound like a good person for the job? And consider that he’s produced and wrote songs for Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes, The Cab, Lupe Fiasco…

He clearly has a good experience in music, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a Patrick/Fall Out Boy fan. Quit dissing him just because you hate the band.

…oh, and if you hate FOB for how they changed their sound (ChiliPepper), I have a statement: everyone changes. It’s a part of life and you’ll have to get over it. They ARE a band that will be remembered by this generation.

Rachel (again) | 2/24/2009, 9:33 pm EST

…and not only am I sticking up for Patrick and FOB, I am sticking up for all of my fellow Overcast Kids, who will definitely give all of you haters a piece of their minds.

reinventlove | 4/22/2009, 8:17 pm EST

ok i am a huge fan of patrick stump, i think he is the only member in fob that actually has any talent… though i like fob, i think pete wentz is dead weight…
from interviews i have seen and read of stump he sounds as if he really does have a vast knowledge of music, not to mention he is extremely talented, so i think he’d be a great rs reviewer… i do not think it is fair people are judging him on the band he is in, considering that if pete wentz was not in fob, people would not be going into cardiac arrest over stump writing a rs review…

jeep | 10/19/2009, 11:34 am EST

i don’t really care if he’s on a band or not,,
i like what he wrote..

Lee | 11/6/2009, 10:21 pm EST

You could see that he’s not a bad writer if you disreguard whether you hate or love the band.
His reviews are fun to read, and pretty accurate.

JonB | 11/10/2009, 5:39 pm EST

Just browsing some of the comments here.

“And consider that he’s produced and wrote songs for Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes, The Cab, Lupe Fiasco…”

“Patrick V. Stump(h) is so talented. He is an amazing producer and musician.”

“Fall Out Boy IS going to be one of the few bands this decade that people will actually remember”

“Just don’t go putting people down because they don’t like the same bands as you. I just think it’s downright immature.”

I think the only immature people here, are the ones who like tripe like that.
