Langerado Festival Canceled Due To Sluggish Ticket Sales

This year’s Langerado Festival in Miami, Florida, has been canceled, the fest’s organizers revealed today in a statement. The seventh annual Langerado, scheduled for March 6-8th at Miami’s Bicentennial Park, was set to feature performances by Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Ryan Adams, Snoop Dogg, Deerhunter, Thievery Corporation and many more. “Sluggish ticket sales” were the reason for the cancellation according to the festival’s Website, as “Langerado’s independent local promoters, faced with a very tough decision in a dismal economy, canceled the 2009 event only after every possible option was exhausted.”

“Unfortunately, during these difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it’s become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to the high standards of our past events,” Langerado Co-Promoter Ethan Schwartz said. “Putting Langerado on hold was the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community during this difficult time.” All tickets purchased for the event will be refunded.

It seems like all facets of the music industry, from album sales to ticket sales to merchandising, is bracing for or is already feeling the inevitable effects of the recession. Sadly, Langerado is one of the first of many festivals that will either be canceled or postponed due to the current economy. British Columbia’s Pemberton Festival also announced plans to take 2009 off to focus on their 2010 fest.

I went to Langerado last year, which had a great lineup. This years planned lineup, was not even close.

I think this years lackluster lineup was probably an even greater contributor to the poor ticket sales, than just blaming it on the economy.

Last year had R.E.M., Beastie Boys, Phil Lesh & Friends, Ben Folds, among many others.

The biggest name they could find this year? Death Cab For Cutie.

While I enjoy Death Cab, they are not large enough of a draw, and I am not surprised this happened.

Also last years festival took place in a unique setting (Big Cypress, in the middle of the everglades). This years festival was supposed to take place in Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami, which lacks the spirit.

Feller | 2/3/2009, 2:37 pm EST

It’s not the economy – this was a piss poor excuse for a show attempting to draw the masses. Look at last year’s lineup – REM, Beastie Boys, The Roots, Phil Lesh… – does it even compare?

I mean, I’m a fan of a lot of the bands that were supposed to play this year, but they keep moving the show every year and, well, is Death Cab really headliner worthy? Snoop is still awesome but, uh, seriously?

A sluggish economy means people won’t spend money on something they’re lukewarm on. Sometimes a mediocre (or at least disappointing) product is the reason people won’t pay.

usiskin99 | 2/3/2009, 2:55 pm EST

compared to last year and the years before, the lineup was miserable except some good worth going bands and…. the biggest mistake, having it down in miami! no camping allowed? come on! thats the spirit of langerado! thats what makes the festival “the langerado music festival”!! better find a better venue for next time…

valerie | 2/3/2009, 2:56 pm EST

That’s a damn shame i was really thinking about going too. I hope they don’t cancel bonnaroo, i already bought i my ticket!!!

Anonymous | 2/3/2009, 2:57 pm EST

Although the economy might have had something to do with it, the pathetic excuse for a lineup was with out a doubt the main cause. Having been last year and had a blast, I was really looking forward to it, especially because I have nothing else planned around that time. I saw the line-up and immediately decided against it. My friends who were planning on going felt the same way. Meanwhile you have Phish and Bruce signed up for Bonnaroo which will undoubtedly sell even more tickets as a result of Langerado’s poor lineup.

anonymous II | 2/3/2009, 3:04 pm EST

Langerado committed a cardinal sin by abandoning its roots. Its obvious that this was canceled because of the dissapointing lineup, not the economy. The jam band community is extremely loyal and would have found the money to go to this year’s festival, but the promoters just couldn’t leave well enough alone…had to keep making it bigger and broader… this is what they get. I’m all about a diversified lineup, but when you completely alienate your base, this is what happens. Bring it back to Markham and watch it sell out.

Anonymous | 2/3/2009, 3:10 pm EST

It’s a shame they couldn’t cherry-pick some of the better bands that were supposed to play this year, and just make it a one-day fest instead. Rather than cancelling completely. Oh well.

Jay | 2/3/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Cool less hippies in Miami, that is a good thing. Dont know why they moved it out of the swamp, seemed like a good place to have it.

Festival Builder | 2/3/2009, 3:19 pm EST

Really sucks for those of us that lost our jobs at Langerado. Hopefully no other Festivals cancel or too many of us won’t be able o make ends meet.

dan | 2/3/2009, 3:50 pm EST

where’d you get your bonnaroo ticket valerie?

yeah, i agree the lineup was weak, especially since ryan adams was probably not gonna be there anyway

Markham | 2/3/2009, 4:14 pm EST

Should have kept it at Markham. I had been there every year except last year b/c of the location. This year the acts kept me from purchasing tickets. Back to your roots, Langerado, back to your roots!

Anonymous | 2/3/2009, 4:19 pm EST

They should have known from the minute they announced the new location that ticket sales would be horrible. I live downtown Miami and had no intentions of attending after I heard that news.
It would have seriously lacked the festival atmosphere that Langerado has provided in the past. The economy is a great scapegoat but music lovers always find the dollars necessary to attend that once a year music festival. My advice to the promoters of Langerado: Stick with what works.

novak | 2/3/2009, 4:24 pm EST

psshh… the economy… right…

Jamie | 2/3/2009, 4:29 pm EST

If you were headed to Langerado you may want to check out the Harvest of Hope Fest instead. Same weekend, many of the same bands and at a fraction of the price. By far the most affordable and decent festival I have seen in a long time, plus its for a good cause.

Abby | 2/3/2009, 4:49 pm EST

Bottom line: The promoters didn’t give a damn about the festival’s fan base. When they announced Miami, there was a ton of resistance… this could explain why the Langerado started censoring it’s MySpace comments. They pissed off their audience. Camping in the woods with a great lineup is what Langerado WAS. Now it’s non-existant due to some really bad decisions made by the planning team. That’s what happens when you become greedy, I guess. It WASN’T because of the economy. I, for one, was there last year and didn’t even consider going to Miami for this one.

mamajama | 2/3/2009, 4:51 pm EST

no campy- no selly tickets

RRS | 2/3/2009, 4:59 pm EST

That’s what they get for booking Horrible acts like Robert Randolph

Anonymous | 2/3/2009, 5:00 pm EST

Poor venue = Poor ticket sales

RockinRobin | 2/3/2009, 5:04 pm EST

I agree. We only go to festivals we can camp at- so much more fun. We had already decided to go to HOH instead because the camping is so cheap.

pooter5 | 2/3/2009, 5:06 pm EST

it’s cool wasn’t lookin forward to all the club crap at night anyway…

Anonymous | 2/3/2009, 5:13 pm EST

Does anyone know where else Girl Talk is playing anytime soon?

tami | 2/3/2009, 5:15 pm EST

I have attended every Langerado Festival and I planned to attend this one as well. It is unfortanate that this years has been cancelled! I hope they listen to the fan base and bring back what it is that kept us coming back for more again next year! Until then fest on somewhere else and keep the music alive! Bring back the CAMPING!

Hopper | 2/3/2009, 5:17 pm EST

Poor lineup, period. Are you going to blame the cancellation of Vegoose 2008 on the economy too? Take away the headlining jam bands and you will lose every time. You can’t tell me if Widespread Panic, Beck, DMB, Moe, Galactic and Phish were playing that there would be low ticket sales. Yes I know, Phish is playing somewhere else that weekend, but you get the point.

WidepreadSpectacle | 2/3/2009, 5:21 pm EST

If you present us with a shitty line-up and a shitty venue you get shitty ticket sales. It has nothing to do with the falling economy. Get your shit together Langerado and put together a festival that people actually want to attend.

Hoosiers | 2/3/2009, 5:23 pm EST

I’m with RockinRobin…looks like HOH is the way to go this year. At least it’s wicked cheap!

RockinRobin | 2/3/2009, 5:25 pm EST

and you can camp :)

Anonymous | 2/3/2009, 5:26 pm EST

maybe if they brought back camping and the JAM bands this wouldnt of happened. Also center of Miami?! what where they thinking.

Nat (Chicago) | 2/3/2009, 5:36 pm EST

My wife and I decided to go because we wanted to get away for weekend – Chicago winters suck. The lineup wasn’t allstar bands, but still it was a three day festival to have a great time… especially for us traveling from IL!!!

Going to festivals are fun to sample music I never heard before or see bands I haven’t been able to see when they are on a normal tour

I guess either way, getting away to warmer weather, the beach and sun doesn’t hurt… to bad though was really looking forward to this festival.

Jamie | 2/3/2009, 6:38 pm EST

Just to reiterate: If you were headed to Langerado you may want to check out the Harvest of Hope Fest instead. Same weekend, many of the same bands and at a fraction of the price. It’s in St Augustine and you can camp. By far the most affordable and decent festival I have seen in a long time, plus its for a good cause.

Jenny | 2/3/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Just reiterating: no camping, bad location, lack of great music overshoot the bad economy as reasons for the lack of interest. I think a huge factor was the fact that phish is playing their first three nights after their breakup that weekend. I mean, that’s where I was planning on going the weekend of the 7th. Langerado, i have faith in you, step up your act for next year!

Anonymous | 2/3/2009, 8:58 pm EST

The Big Cypress (Everglades) location was very cool last year.

But the parking/traffic situation was abysmal.

Bicentennial Park is a terribly bland venue by comparison, but its a lot easier to access. And better nearby parking/dining options.

Somewhere between the mess of Big Cypress and the blandness of Bicentennial, there’s got to be a happy medium. I never got to attend Langerado at its original Markham location. How was that?

Norsse | 2/3/2009, 10:38 pm EST

I hope some of the bands decide to play some of the clubs anyhow since there are going to be a lot of people who already bought airline tickets, paid for hotel rooms and rental cars with the hopes of seeing live music in Miami that weekend. South Beach and the other things Miami have to offer are nice, but I wanted to see Thievery, Deathcab, Michael Franti, etc… I imagine the bands have spent money arranging for their own travel and the trasportation of their gear too. I hope some Miami promoter is quick enough to book at least a few of those bands for shows!

The Langerado promoters suck!! Some of us saved hard for this trip and the ticket to the show was the least expensive part of the trip- Getting back the price of the ticket doesn’t make up for the rest of the loss- two days off from work, airfare, hotel, rental car, etc…

ChiliPepper | 2/3/2009, 10:56 pm EST

I think I can sum up this wall of responses in three words:

Fuck the ‘rado

ChiliPepper | 2/3/2009, 10:57 pm EST

But I hope it comes back next year…

Mad fan | 2/3/2009, 10:58 pm EST

I really wanted to go this year because my favorite band michael franti was going, but now thats not going to happen. It was the only thing I wanted to go to and now its ruined! :(

anonymous | 2/3/2009, 11:07 pm EST

yes, i like the bands on the lineup for the harvest of hope. and i think it is their business if they want to help that organization. but i am someone who is incapacitated by a mental illness (ptsd) and i have trouble getting treatment because of my financial situation. this organization wouldn’t help me, and i have paid taxes every year i have worked, and my parents paid taxes all their lives, therefore funding my education. i can’t walk into any emergency room and receive emergency medical care for free. i am not against migrant workers, i have worked with them and one of my best friends is a migrant worker trying desperately to gain citizenship in the united states. he is a really good person. but i think instead of putting a bandaid on the current situation, this money could be better spent addressing the cause of these problems, which is the need for a migrant worker program so that they could be an integral part of this country, since they already are in a crucial way. i feel for them i really do. but if i was to go to the country that they have come from illegally i would not be received warmly by anyone there, much less receive medical, monetary, or educational benefits from anyone. be mad at the farmers who pay them next to nothing, but don’t be mad at me because i am already paying for their unpaid medical bills from hospitals, and paying the salaries of the underpaid teachers that are teaching their children, and i don’t want to spend any more of my money enabling the current situation to continue

matt | 2/3/2009, 11:50 pm EST

the reason why its canceled is because the sold out their true fans by moving it to downtown miami and no hippy wants to go to a big city and listen to the shitty bands they had

last year was amazing. i hope they come back to their roots next year

Caro | 2/4/2009, 1:51 am EST

False statement addressed by the news yet again. BAD LOCATION FOR LANGERADO!

Script101 | 2/4/2009, 7:39 am EST

I can see what your saying about the migrant workers man…but would you really rather keep giving your money to corporations that charge ridiculous fees and do nothing to help out anyone instead of knowing that there are poor migrant kids who are benefiting from your ticket fee? I mean get serious. Whether or not you feel like Harvest of Hope helped you out, you cannot possibly think that paying out the corporate machine is better than helping out the people who put food on your table. You say your friend is a migrant worker? Then be a friend a cough up the $60 that it takes to go to a three day festival with decent bands and camping. What kind of sense does it make to sponsor a bunch of money sucking promoters if your pissed about your own situation? Not to mention that these commercial swine are sucking the blood out of music festivals across the county. At least HOH is still a reasonable freakin price the way it use to be. Get serious.

Anonymous | 2/4/2009, 9:35 am EST

Number 1 rule…listen to the fans!! When we first discovered that Langerado would be in Miami so many people said they were not going due to cost.If the powers that be were really being cost efficient they would have considered the economy from the day they thought to move the festival to Miami. People can barley afford to buy the tickets and then you want them to pay for a hotel, which on the website stated they were discounted showing cost from $149 to $299, go to shows in bars/clubs where there will be charged a cover and do not allow re-entry into the park…hmmm…No wonder it was doomed from the start.

Crispy | 2/4/2009, 10:26 am EST

WHAT THE FUCK I TOLD THEM FROM THE BEGINING NO CAMPING NO ONE WILL COME YOU FUCKING ORGANISERS ARE FUCKING STUPID I AND A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE COULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB THEN YOU FUCKERS

Cigtone | 2/4/2009, 10:54 am EST

I can’t believe its canceled. Yeah once they announced Miami I knew it wouldn’t be worth going. Just too expensive without camping. I hear there is a new festival Buzz Locofest which has camping. Anyone have any info on that? Maybe see you next year Langerado.

RyanAdamsLovah | 2/4/2009, 10:58 am EST

its no wonder. I knew it was doomed. Miami???? WTF?? Go to LOCOFEST! For $25, you cant lose! And there’ll be camping. Looks like a blast! We already got 4 tix and it was still cheaper than just driving to Miami. FFF them Langerado fuckers.

RockChick | 2/4/2009, 10:59 am EST

Yeah, LocoFest.Net! I’ll be there! And way cooler line-up.

MetalMel | 2/4/2009, 11:02 am EST

Whats Locofest? Where is it? How much? and when?

Vector Salad | 2/4/2009, 11:07 am EST

I wonder how long to get my money back. They never should’ve moved it. I was really looking forward to it. Anyone gonna check out that Loco fest?

BazookaBabe | 2/4/2009, 11:12 am EST

I just got tix to Locofest. I heard it started in Boston, they have a great music scene up there. I’m giving it a shot. Langerado cancel just disappointing and they should never have moved it! Rock on!

whosnextbiatch | 2/4/2009, 11:14 am EST

Loco blows…too hard. Not the same vibe at all.

flyboyz | 2/4/2009, 11:18 am EST

It is too hard. F*** that. Go to HOH $35.00 and fifteen of the same bands as stupid friggin Langocrapo. Plus you can camp. We got our tix yesterday and are looking forward to chillin without going to stupid overpriced Miami.

N Shore Rocker | 2/4/2009, 11:20 am EST

I’m from Boston and Loco was the best time ever. Such a cool vibe and you can walk around from stage to stage no re-entry fee, no hassles, no BS. Check out the lineup, its diverse. Something for everyone, and if you’re a chick, lots of men there!

deathMeTal | 2/4/2009, 11:46 am EST

Langerado = corp sell out

music scene is dying. we can’t afford to see live bands anymore. thwe whole system wil have to collapse for anything to be done. Langerado is just the start. We have to support local events. Fuck the corporate fuckers!

anonymous | 2/4/2009, 12:06 pm EST

prbly depends what you consider local. 4 south fl. Lebo is local for north fl. hoh is local…but they’re both cheap and have camping so right on

NM Fan | 2/4/2009, 12:34 pm EST

What about all of us people who bought non-refundable airfare, pre-paid for hotel rooms and took time off from work?

I hope some of the bands that were scheduled to play set up some shows for those of us who will be going to Miami ’cause we’ve already paid for the trip!

Ralph | 2/4/2009, 12:42 pm EST

Used to be it was all about getting your music heard and not so much about making money. Now they can’t even produce events like this cause too many hands are in the pot! Unbelievable. Have a good time in Miami peeps who pre-paid. You can always go Salsa dancing.

Music + Camping Fan | 2/4/2009, 1:34 pm EST

I am going to LOCOFEST for sure!!!
I checked that out and I can listen to Jam bands on Friday night then camp and then Rock all day saturday with more than 25 bands! Then camp on Saturday with even more bands! Way cool! I was told they will have about 50 bands total there and its only 25 bucks!!! I also hear they are now adding some bands that were supposed to play Langerado! + Motorcycle racing!!! This has got to be the best deal I have seen for a festival! I am serious! Check it out ! locofest.net

yahdoood | 2/4/2009, 1:50 pm EST

I think it’s funny that the hippiefest doesn’t offer camping but the metalfest does!

I’m goin’ to go to Loco and get LOCO!!!!

lexcake | 2/4/2009, 2:07 pm EST

EVERYONE GO TO HARVEST OF HOPE
NOW!

DZooks | 2/4/2009, 2:13 pm EST

Guess it depends on your music taste which “fest you’re gonna go to. My cousin lives in NY and I know Locobazooka used to be up there (no locofest). He said it was one good party! Dont know what this harvest hope is. Sounds too mellow. Is there camping?

Eddie A.R | 2/4/2009, 2:18 pm EST

Damn! What the fuck is going on? Where Am I going to see Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Modest Mouse, Death Cab For Cutie and more? I bet Miami was the reason. 85% of Hispanics don’t listen to Alternative Music

Potato | 2/4/2009, 3:00 pm EST

Though last year at big cypress was amazing (ferris wheel and phil anyone?) the camping kinda sucked as did the weather. If i’m going to camp i’ll do it at a place like deerfields where they had trinumeral in august. I’d rather be somewhere mellow and beautiful than a cow pasture in the middle of a swamp.

As for cloud nine, they lost a whole bunch of money last year and the logistics were miserable. They almost had to cancel the biscuits because of a tornado warning. Durring the beastie boys the sound was miserable for the first half because of the conditions during the daytime. Several of the bands almost weren’t able to get there because driving the RV’s on those roads after the rain was impossible.

So, despite the awesomeness of the festival do not romantisize the festival grounds, they kinda sucked.

As for miami, I live there and though i wasn’t happy that they moved it to those grounds i did not want to camp near a fire ant hill durring a freezing monsoon again. It was the line-up that killed it. And frankly, ill be ok with it being cancelled as long as some of the bands (hopefully bisco) come down here.

Langerado - moving target | 2/4/2009, 3:15 pm EST

So Langerado’s roots finally gave out after being transplanted from venue to venue, year after year. …I’m sorry to see it go. HOWEVER… with a high ticket price and trying to pull this off in Downtown Miami was insane to begin with. I just got wind of LOCOFEST.. A HUGE bang for the buck… $25 for so many bands plus super bike races… plus free karting… …camping! ..No Brainer! I wish I knew about this before I bought my ticket to Langerado. …whats the word on the free SPIN mag… does that go away too?

jonathan | 2/4/2009, 3:18 pm EST

wow eddie a.r. you just blamed this on an entire race. winner.

TJLUVJUZ | 2/4/2009, 3:47 pm EST

THE DECISION TO MOVE THIS EVENT TO MIAMI WAS STUPID BEYOND BELIEF. THIS WAS AND ALWAYS SHOULD BE A “CRUNCHY” JAM BAND FESTIVAL WITH CAMPING, ETC. LANGERADO ALIENTED AND PISSED OFF THEIR CORE BASE OF FANS WITH THIS STUPID SELL OUT MOVE. NICE JOB DOUCHEBAGS. NO WONDER NO ONE BOUGHT TICKETS. SAVING MY PENNIES FOR B-ROO.

TJLUVJUZ | 2/4/2009, 3:49 pm EST

AND THE LINEUP PROPOSED FOR 2009 WAS AS WEAK AS THE VENUE CHOICE.

anonymous | 2/4/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Harvest of Hope Fest is a split between Punk, Jam, and Dance bands…and yes there is camping. It’s also really cheap.

kate | 2/4/2009, 5:05 pm EST

anyone looking for a smaller festival (with camping!!!) should check out harvest of hope fest near st. augustine. it’s got a great line-up and is only $40 for the 3 days.

brian | 2/5/2009, 12:30 pm EST

If they had an incling that sales would be slugglish based on the number of festivals that didn’t sell out last year I would think they would have choosen a venue that allowed the festival goers to camp rather then stay in pricey Miami Hotels… The venue was lame and didn’t lend itself to the same atomsphere as the previous years. That’s why this guy said screw it, I’ll go to Bonnaroo…

Shadrach | 2/7/2009, 12:28 am EST

The only reason this festival was shut down was the lame line up and the horrible venue. I went last year with 5 friends and planned on a bigger group this year. But since there is no camping no one wanted to go. In lacked spirit. I’ll pay $300 for a ticket but expect people to pay that and tell them go find a hotel and travel back and forth for three days…..i’ll stay home. Horrible planning not sluggish econmy killed this once great festival

gd | 2/7/2009, 12:35 pm EST

Go ahead and try blame the economy but this was cancelled as people like myself whom have been to Langerao in the past noticed that this uears lineup was beyond weak compared to previous years. Just look at the headliners. Death Cab is not Phil Lesh or Trey Anastasio. I can go on and on but the bottom line is the lineup stinks and the new venue sucks the fun right out of the festival. Who wants to party all day at a festival only to be hasseled by the Miami police upon exiting the facility?

joy | 2/9/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Langerado went down because of greed They forgot the basics .They turned there back on the langerado fans……..

Bad move langerado

its not about the economy.first of all miami?i mean seriously how do you move from an indian reservation to the middle of a fuckin city.thats super scetchy.and death cab for cutie and dashboard confessional?langerado went too mainstream and SOLDOUT.ALL GOOD IS WHERE ITS AT AND 10K LAKES.be there!

ETHAN SCHWARTZ YOU ARE A MORON

tree | 3/27/2009, 12:12 pm EST

Sorry Langerado,

You got what was coming to you…. trying to mimmick the transition Bonnaroo has made over the years slowly morphing into a Woodstock 99 scene…

You ignored your target market, and loyal customers/fans and it bit you in the arse. All you gotta do is keep it real and schedule the fest over spring break as in years past.

What happened to the langerado I used to look forward to with the heady lineup? Your shows have always been so well promoted, executed, and attended. What happened? What changed? Thats pretty obvious… get back to basics ya’ll…. and remember the old adage. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it !

Peace,

PS: Hope you’ll be back in fighting form next year. I always loved langerado. This was the first fest in 5 years I didn’t buy a full weekend ticket for….(the lineup and event was simply uninspiring).. I gather I wasn’t alone in making that decision.

Cheers to ya.. VIVA 2010 !

tree | 3/27/2009, 12:14 pm EST

oh and btw: who and based on what research or marketing study determined that the poersonality shift of Langerado be pursued ?

Dude,… ya boffed it man,… ya totally boffed it.

A | 4/1/2009, 2:25 pm EST

I was so disappointed to hear langerado was going to be in a city this year, such a shame… who wants to get out of their head and be around a bunch of cops and straight people in miami… this got worse than bonnaroo! haha
