Paul McCartney, The Killers and The Cure Top Coachella Lineup

The organizers of the first big festival of 2009, California’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, have finally announced the lineup for their epic desert fest: Paul McCartney, the Killers and the Cure will headline on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively (the fest runs April 17th, 18th and 19th at the Empire Polo Club in Indio). The date will mark the U.S. festival debut of Sir Paul, who says in a statement, “I have heard that Coachella is one of the greatest festivals in the world. I’m really excited to get out there and rock!” The April 17th lineup will also include Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Leonard Cohen, Franz Ferdinand and Morrissey (not the Smiths, as many had hoped). Joining the Killers on the April 18th are TV on the Radio and the return of Amy Winehouse.

Robert Smith and Co. are headlining on April 19th, but the real draw may be My Bloody Valentine, who will finally make their Coachella debut after being at the forefront of most booking rumors last year. Sunday night is ’80s Night at the Indio festival, with bands like X, Throbbing Gristle, Public Enemy and Paul Weller all performing. Plus, there will be sets from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lupe Fiasco.

On the smaller stages, each day is dotted with top shelf indie acts, ranging from the Black Keys, Girl Talk and the Hold Steady on Friday to Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses and Liars on Saturday and Okkervil River, Antony & The Johnsons and No Age on Sunday. And that’s just naming a few.

If there’s one night that maybe looks weaker on paper, it’s probably the Saturday, April 18th lineup. Coachella had a cure to improve their slow-selling Saturday bill last year: adding Prince at the last minute. This year, there’s a star by the name of Bruce Springsteen who happens to be available during Coachella because of a six-day gap in his tour schedule that leaves him in Los Angeles with nothing to do starting on April 15th. Coincidence? We’ll find out soon.

Keep in mind, today’s announcement doesn’t include all those specialty dance tents that Coachella features. Britney Spears is among those rumored to be playing a dance tent in a move similar to Madonna’s appearance at the festival in 2006. Tickets for this year’s festival go on sale today at noon at the Coachella site, and interested buyers may want to take advantage of a layaway payment plan: today through February 28th, fans can pay 50 percent of the cost of a weekend pass now and the rest in either two installments or one final payment in March and April.

Are you going to this year’s festival? The full Coachella lineup is after the jump. And of course, Rock Daily will be on the Coachella grounds exactly 77 days from now with interviews, reviews, photos and more.

FRIDAY, APRIL 17: Paul McCartney, Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, Leonard Cohen, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Beirut, The Black Keys, Girl Talk, Silversun Pickups, The Ting Tings, The Crystal Method, Ghostland Observatory, Crystal Castles, The Airborne Toxic Event, We Are Scientists, N.A.S.A., Patton & Rahzel, M. Ward, The Presets, The Hold Steady, A Place to Bury Strangers, Felix da Housecat, Buraka Som Sistema, Ryan Bingham, Bajofondo, Peanut Butter Wolf, Noah & the Whale, White Lies, The Bug, Alberta Cross, Los Campesinos!, Craze & Klever, Molotov, Switch, Gui Boratto, Steve Aoki, The Aggrolites, People Under the Stairs, The Courteeners, Cage the Elephant, Dear and the Headlights.

SATURDAY, APRIL 18: The Killers, Amy Winehouse, Thievery Corporation, TV on the Radio, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, MSTRKRFT, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Atmosphere, Mastodon, TRAV$DJ-AM, Henry Rollins, Crookers, Turbonegro, Hercules and Love Affair, Superchunk, Glasvegas, Dr. Dog, Drive-By Truckers, Booker T & the DBT’s, Amanda Palmer, The Bloody Beetroots, Surkin, Para One (Live), Calexico, Liars, Bob Mould Band, Zane Lowe, Electric Touch, Blitzen Trapper, James Morrison, Drop the Lime, Glass Candy, Thenewno2, Gang Gang Dance, Billy Talent, Ida Maria, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Zizek, Cloud Cult, Tinariwen.

SUNDAY, APRIL 19: The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Throbbing Gristle, Lupe Fiasco, Paul Weller, Peter Bjorn and John, X, Antony & the Johnsons, Roni Size, Public Enemy, Jenny Lewis, Groove Armada, Paolo Nutini, Christopher Lawrence, Lykke Li, The Kills, Okkervil River, M.A.N.D.Y., Clipse, Sebastien Tellier, Fucked Up, Perry Farrell, The Horrors, Late of the Pier, K’naan, Junior Boys, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Supermayer, No Age, Vivian Girls, Shepard Fairey, Themselves, Gaslight Anthem, The Knux, Mexican Institute of Sound, The Night Marchers, Marshall Barnes.

NicoSuave | 1/30/2009, 11:27 am EST

The Killers are headlining? Really? Them? If anyone has seen them live would agree that they do not deserve to perform or even be a band for that matter. Are we human or are we dancer? No. You suck.

Will The Thrill | 1/30/2009, 11:28 am EST

If the Boss is going to come, I’m so there

Anonymous | 1/30/2009, 11:40 am EST

Gordon, Flash | 1/30/2009, 12:42 pm EST

Is there a more overrated band that the Killers? Jeez.

Steve | 1/30/2009, 1:10 pm EST

I saw the Killers this past sunday at MSG wow talk about overrated. They were beyond dull. The event might as well been sponsored by AARP

ellasride | 1/30/2009, 1:30 pm EST

This years line-up blows. 10 years? Where’s the draw? Ticket sales will lag and they will have to do something to kick start this festival. What were they thinking bring back RATM!!!!!

Paul McCartney on the bill alone, will ensure massive ticket sales.

Anonymous | 1/30/2009, 2:43 pm EST

In 2007, saturday’s main stage went from kings of leon to arcade fire to red hot chili peppers. then, on sunday, rage against the machine. 2009’s lineup comes nowhere close.

lahipsterr | 1/30/2009, 2:50 pm EST

Where’s U2 you might see themat caoche themat at themat ta aata at athere co

Watchdog | 1/30/2009, 3:11 pm EST

Anyone who has never seen Sir Paul owes it to themselves to do so at least ONCE in their lifetime, and Ringo just may show up. History in the making. I HAVE TO ADMIT I DON’T UNDERSTAND THE KILLERS HEADLINING, they’re okay but not headline material; Thievery Corporation/Henry Rollins Band/Superchunk/Drive By Truckers/Bob Mould will easily make up for Saturday’s lame headliner, however. Just my opinion. Thank you, Paul Tollet. You’ve done good. See ya there!

8080808 | 1/30/2009, 3:27 pm EST

You whiners are morons with no taste. This lineup is unbelievable!

asdas | 1/30/2009, 3:39 pm EST

Bonnaroo>coachella

Moozic | 1/30/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Paul is a legend. Recognize. Its gonna be awesome.

Swingline | 1/30/2009, 3:55 pm EST

Can’t imagine seeing artists like Mastodon and TV on the Radio Sat., only to stick around to see the Killers as a headliner. That’s a terrible choice considering what they have leading up to them.
That would have been like making Incubus a headliner back when they were MTV’s rock flavor of the month. Sure, you’re making a bunch of 15 year old girls happy, but there’s certainly much better music and live shows to be seen.

spot | 1/30/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Pmac and No age thats it
and maybe the boss if he shows up

Josh | 1/30/2009, 5:07 pm EST

Think I’ll skip the heat stroke and go to Sasquatch this year instead.

Ross | 1/30/2009, 5:17 pm EST

it’s a rad lineup! What would make people like it besides Bowie Radiohead and Daft Punk?

Jason | 1/30/2009, 8:01 pm EST

I have a strong felling the Jane’s Addiction will either be added on Saturday or play a surprise set on a side tent. With Perry there on Sunday it only makes sense. Unless he’s wants to keep it exclusive to lollapaloosa.

Thor | 1/30/2009, 8:39 pm EST

Typical American booking. What about the Death Metal bands? Millions of records sold and no representation. Even oldster Heavy Metal isn’t represented. Pitiful weak American tastes.

basser | 1/30/2009, 10:18 pm EST

Someone asked if there was a band more overrated than The Killers? I say yes there is/was – Nirvanna. And Hole, too.

Of course The Killers are a headliner. They have sold more records than the other bands who are playing on Saturday. And they’re good. I saw them in 2005 and they were great.

JIF | 1/31/2009, 1:05 am EST

Bruce Sprinsteen & E Street do not have enough pop like songs to be at coachella therefore he will be tearing it up at Bonnaroo…

Long Live Bonnaroo!

Anonymous | 1/31/2009, 10:15 am EST

Death Metal? Who needs that. To put it simply for those: Death Metal is dead.

eh | 1/31/2009, 12:33 pm EST

girl talk and Dr.Dog = win though.

sandy | 1/31/2009, 7:21 pm EST

The Killers are amazing live. Can’t wait!!!

Pslightly Psycho | 2/1/2009, 2:25 pm EST

WHAT an amazing lineup. I wish I lived in Cali; Milwaukee, WI, is boring as day old dog shit when it comes to music festivals such as Coachella or Lollapalooza. While I think McCartney is a bit off-putting for a generally alternative rock fest (like Prince last year) one can not argue that the best of the best in innovative, cutting -edge rock will be there! i am moping like Morrissey just thinking about it!

chris | 2/1/2009, 5:11 pm EST

i love the lineup this year….just a tad bit better than last years. im happy rollins is gonna be there, does that mean a black flag reunion???

Anonymous | 2/2/2009, 1:22 pm EST

in a earlier post you guys said neil young would be there.. what happened to that? misinformed? or did you leave his name out?

em | 2/2/2009, 2:16 pm EST

How exciting! Fantastic headliners this year!
I love all three… :)

dartparker | 2/2/2009, 3:04 pm EST

THE KNUX ROCKIN SUNDAY!

billy | 2/2/2009, 4:03 pm EST

oh yeA

Jason | 2/4/2009, 11:05 pm EST

My Bloody Valentine alone makes this a killer lineup

Velectronic | 2/9/2009, 10:16 pm EST

I have been to Coachella twice 06 and 07. I’m a big indie electronic music, any kind of music fan. This year, as well as last year, the line up is pretty blah. Overrated The Killers, McCartney?? (yeah, maybe with the Beatles). As far as electronic, they need to bring Daft Punk since they haven’t played for a quite a while now. How about No doubt? Justice? They do have good bands such as the Ting Tings, The kills, Crystal Castles (they are amazing), MSTRKRFT… if would be nice to see Amy Winehouse cracked up on stage. I wont be going this year. Have fun

em | 3/6/2009, 5:56 pm EST

The Killers headlining? Brilliant!

doug potoksky | 3/12/2009, 12:25 am EST

Wake up music fans you have the best underrated band in the World playing this year Ghostland Observatory! And i am not even big on dance music. They blew me away at Austin City Limits. And i have seen allmost everyone.

someone | 3/24/2009, 5:54 pm EST

bitch please, The Killers are wayy underrated. I’m glad they are headlining and you haters can suck it….

ElectricFan | 3/31/2009, 1:49 pm EST

I’m really excited about seeing Electric Touch again! I saw them last year and they blew me away, even in the middle of the afternoon sun.
