Graham Nash Talks “Reflections” Box Set, Performs “Right Between the Eyes”

1/30/09, 2:53 pm EST

On his way to Rolling Stone headquarters in New York to talk about his new three-CD career spanning box set, Graham Nash began thinking about a song he wrote in the city more than 40 years ago. “I was seduced by a beautiful woman down in Long Island,” Nash says. “She was married. The song is a confession to a friend.”

Nash sang us an acoustic version of the track, “Right Between The Eyes,” for what he believes is the first time in 20 years (click above for the exclusive video). It’s one of 64 tracks on Reflections, which traces his career from the Hollies through the many incarnations of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to his recent solo work. “I went through 44 versions of the set before I settled on this one,” he says. “It was painful for me because I’m not for introspection or resting on my laurels. A lot of the musical soundtrack to my life is on this box set.”

Nash plans on hitting the road this summer for Crosby, Stills and Nash’s 40th anniversary tour. He’s also in the early stages of recording a new covers album with his famed trio under the guidance of producer Rick Rubin.

The last time Nash was hanging at Rolling Stone along with David Crosby and Stephen Stills, the trio took us track-by-track through the making of their landmark self-titled debut album:

A three-disc box set? For the least talented dude in a middling band? Don’t you dopes realize that in thirty years, this will be the equivalent of a Larry Mullen, Jr. career-spanner?

Also, are you aware that people made records after 1975?

I am so pleased, so very pleased that the nicest, most humble, most tenderhearted and sensitive member of CSN(Y) has come out with a landmark retrospective of his work. So many melodies here –! Such a good songwriter, too.

Congratulations to Graham for actually RELEASING a box set. He`s not like Neil Young who talks shit in interviews for 20 years about releasing a career spanning box set.Get over yourself Neil.

To the dopey person who asked the question “Are you aware that people made records after 1975″ my answer is: “Gee do you realise that living will eventually kill you…?”
The bulk of my record buying occured during the period 1976-1983 (I amassed about 500 of things – including lots and lots of CSN & Y stuff). CDs came and then things slowed down, so by this century I’m lucky to buy one or two CDs a year (mainly stuff like the Killers, Jet and Powderfinger).
I welcome artists with real talent releasing good material and praise the record companies that actually realise that there is still a market out there for music that is not bland, “manufactured” and souless…
I just wish that all 4 of the guys would tour and play TOGETHER again. I’ve seen CSN and I’ve seen My Young – all great shows, but never the four in 1 (and I’ve been going to concerts since the late 70s) – so there’s a request to Graham Nash, who by the way was the man who wrote classics such as “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” – hardly least talented or middling I must add…

I realise that most music of this “Woodstock” generation is completely lost on my generation today…it seems unless you are The Beatles or Bob Dylan, you are not considered valid anymore. But, being a huge fan of MUSIC, I explored myself and when I found the gem that is David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash, I considered myself truely lucky!! These men in their combined and individual careers have made more music that can/will/does affect humanity than a majority of musicians today who focus on top-selling singles you can dance to in a club. I am ecstatic to own this box set, even though I already own multiple copies of Grahams entire discography. He is truely a musician that others should follow and learn from. Thanks Graham for this set, and I cannot wait to see what you do with Stephen’s box set in the future!

Seeing the video again, and I look forward to getting ‘Reflections’ on the 3rd. Nash’s admission that it was painful to put it together sounds honest to the bone – a rare thing in anyone – but I hope and trust he’s happy now and may he be well rewarded for his efforts. If there had been no Graham Nash, rock music in general might have been very different.

Fantastic that GRAHAM NASH is issuing his “REFLECTIONS” Box Set! Can’t wait to get mine! I hope all the fave Nash hits and key album tracks are featured, along with demos and rarities. While I love CS&N, it’s Graham’s voice that has always stood out to my ears, and in the HOLLIES recordings as well where he contributed – both bands have ample space in my music library.

Just because “Anonymous”’s lackluster, self indulgent Box Set flopped and was axed by the record buying public doesn’t mean GRAHAM’s immense talent isn’t heralded and loved by music fans all over the universe.

I Wonder... | 1/31/2009, 11:44 pm EST

Ah, here he goes, turning gold into self-indulgent dust in the style of King Midas in Reverse. I wonder if he does this conciously or under the influence of the ‘items’ available during the hippy era…I wonder?

Graham Nash is quite simply, one of the best British songwriters of his generation; his feelings are expressed deeply in his songs, whether its with The Hollies, CSN&Y or his solo material, all of which are a great place to start. Good luck with the box set, hope there’s more years of great songs to come.

Hollies Reunion Tour????? | 2/2/2009, 9:02 am EST

I think this is cool (NAsh’s box set) – but I would like to see one more Hollies reunion tour. The last on (1983) was great as I caught them in Worcester MA that summer.

But I think one last tour with the Hollies (the classic lineup: Nash, Allan Clarke (if he can be coaxed out of retirement for a Last Waltz), Tony Hicks, Bernie Calvert and Bobby Elliott) would be GREAT and a nice change of pace from all the CSN and CSNY tours (not that I am knocking those tours…I would just like to see The Hollies again!!)

In the Box Set REFLECTIONS, reminds us how talented Graham is.
He continues to bring his command of harmony and melody to the recorded disc. This is only a fraction of his work which still brings joy to the heart and a smile on the face. Willy, if you read this a big thank you for sharing your work with me. I would request that you consider to do a project not yet tried by you…that is a duet CD between you and Allan Clarke(with maybe a little Croz. thrown in. This would bring the circle fully around.
I am waiting for Vol 2 of your box set.

Great job, thank you again!!!

I have it right here. Wow. If you love Nash’s work, you definitely won’t be disappointed.

WOW!
Mike 1/30/2009, 9:51 pm EST —you are so spot-on. I had nearly enough of NY when he tried to use the BSpringfield box set to re-cast them as his band. A few of his old mates must be spinning 6ft under.

i like the old piano version better.
i wish a compilation of the old recordings could be released.
