Bob Dylan Teams Up With Will.i.am for Pepsi Super Bowl Commercial

1/30/09, 12:25 pm EST

How do you make Super Bowl Sunday even more of a spectacle? By adding Bob Dylan, even if it is just for a $3 million minute. The legendary singer-songwriter and the Black Eyed Peas‘ once again ubiquitous Will.i.am will make a cameo appearance during this Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast when the pair team up for a new ad for Pepsi. As Billboard reports, the duo will sing a new song penned specifically for the commercial. No other details have been released, but Pepsi executives are reportedly considering selling the new song through iTunes. We’re kind of baffled why Will.i.am and not Jay-Z or Kanye West would be given the opportunity to appear in a commercial with Dylan, but we’ll take what we can get when it comes to the Highway 61 man.

By appearing in the Pepsi ad, Dylan becomes a part of Super Bowl advertising tradition that in the past has included artists like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Willie Nelson and many more. For your viewing pleasure, we’ve collected the 20 best rock star-filled Super Bowl ads. And just a reminder, Rock Daily will be at the Steelers vs. the Cardinals, so check back for all things Springsteen and gridiron this weekend.

A Short History of Rock Stars in Super Bowl Commercials

In other commercial news, Billboard also reports that Dylan has granted permission for his “Blowin’ in the Wind” to be used in a U.K. TV spot. The ad, for the Co-operative Group — which allows its members to collectively run businesses like food stores, banks and pharmacies via — will run next month.

I wonder what a 1965 Bob Dylan would say if he was asked to do a Pepsi commercial?

I wonder what a 1965 Dylan would say about Will i am….

Crowe | 1/30/2009, 3:41 pm EST

Maybe a 1965 Dylan would spit on this, but a 1966 Dylan and every Dylan afterwards has been about confounding expectations. This doesn’t surprise me at all.

mark | 1/30/2009, 5:13 pm EST

Why Bob? Why? Will I Am is a joke, he’s the corniest producer and songwriter in the modern era, why should a genius like Dylan be in the same commercial as this guy.

Masked & Anonymous | 1/30/2009, 6:12 pm EST

Bob Dylan’s son Jessie Dylan directed Will.I.Am’s Barack Obama-inspired viral sensation “Yes We Can” video. So that explains that connection.

And the Co-operative Group is a network of consumer-owned businesses, so I don’t know if that constitutes “sell-out” the way Pepsi, Cadillac, and Victoria’s Secret do. That being said, I do give him mad props on pulling off Victoria’s ad in his 60s!

Jeremy | 1/30/2009, 9:54 pm EST

I hope this isn’t as bad as it sounds. (see bowie/puff daddy)

I Wonder? | 1/30/2009, 11:16 pm EST

I wonder what a 1965 Dylan would say about you 2009 posters on this site/ I bet it would be one word only, “Wankers!”

luvtobackpack | 1/31/2009, 8:30 am EST

Judas!!

Lonesome Hobo | 1/31/2009, 9:59 am EST

Dylan is famous, as much for his genius, as for doing exactly what no one expects him to do (from born again, to going electric, to being a DJ, to doing Victoria Secret Ads). Just when you try and label him…he’ll go the other way. Pepsi, the Superbowl and Dylan…he’s done it again…bet you didn’t expect it.

Anonymous | 1/31/2009, 4:21 pm EST

No.It would be “complete wankers” I would wager.

Anonymous | 1/31/2009, 4:23 pm EST

I’d bet my fucking kitchen on it.

Bison | 2/1/2009, 1:27 pm EST

Mr. Dylan cannot be defined by others (see the movie “I’m Not Here”) – he defines himself. He does not care if we think his art is good, bad, or ugly. Were we all that self-actualized and brave. No fear, no guilt, no pain (read “The Fountainhead”).

lafawnda | 2/1/2009, 4:48 pm EST

Just want to cover him in that great squirty cream you can buy from the Co-op in England and proceed to EAT HIM he’s SO loved by me. GO BABYCAKES! xxxxxxxxx I adore you.

Lisa | 2/1/2009, 7:04 pm EST

I’m so disappointed that Bob Dylan would do a Pepsi commercial. I guess you can say a bunch of stuff about Bob Dylan “cannot be defined by others”, etc… But this is just plain selling out. How sad.

Forever Young, I just love Bob Dylan. One of my favorite songs of all time.

A young man once wrote | 2/2/2009, 1:36 am EST

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred

michael L. bloomington Mn. | 2/2/2009, 2:46 pm EST

bob dylan is the greatest song writer ever born period.even though he doesn’t sing like a meadowlark.that doesn’t matter one bit. bruce, jagger, beatles, etc… they all know bob dylan is truly the only living legend.so back off and let him do his thing….

lio | 2/2/2009, 4:50 pm EST

I am a big Dylan fan and I like the original, don’t get me wrong, but if this was put on iTunes I would totally buy it. It is much more up tempo and even though I don’t like Will.i.am, this a really interesting cover.

treasurebent | 2/2/2009, 10:21 pm EST

Well Bob,sad to see you back at Maggies Farm again-You can do what you want to but the corporacy has just done its thing with you but after all we all gotta be a part of something.

I imagine some would say,it’s good to see the last nail get driven into the coffin of the 60’s.As for me Iraq Iran Afghanistan I’m still grateful I’m alive and not just blowin in the wind.

“judas!!!”

oh yeah, that’s right. it doesn’t matter because he cannot hear you and he does not care to hear you.

it’s his life.

does it matter | 2/3/2009, 5:13 am EST

hes tangled up in the wrong kind of blue selling out a song supposedly for his kidsis wrong but hey, he must’ve needed the money, hes no longer “Forever young”

Kent | 2/3/2009, 9:44 am EST

I loved it. Maybe it will open up the doors of Bob Dylan to a younger generation. Although at his concert at the Univestiy of Minnesota, (where it all began, in Dinkytown!!)at the Norththrop on election night, the crowd was very suprisingly very young. I went with my uncle and I’d say half the crowd if not more was my age, I’m 24, and Bob Dylan is a god to me. Cant wait for Dylan Days 09 in Hibbing, MN. All you Dylan fans should check it out, its a great time, people in northern MN are some of the most real and cool people around. No wonder Bob is from there.

Kevin | 2/3/2009, 12:51 pm EST

Roger Waters once said of BOB: “Everyone has their price Bob and you’rs is prety low.” Bummer.

His songs are becoming business transactions. Need a bailout Bob?

Just as the energy and vitality of our youth inevitably fades away, so too, will the great art of the day will be exploited and commercialized.

Although I must admit, it hurts deep down to see such a beloved song dethroned before my eyes, I cannot blame Dylan, or any other artist for doing so. “selling out” feeds the family, and there is nothing negative to be said by taking care of one’s loved ones before you depart this ill-forsaken world.

Bill | 2/4/2009, 9:15 am EST

Hey Kevin, ask anyone who Bob Dylan is and they will know….ask anyone who Roger Waters is and they will say ‘Who?’ the times they are a changin’ as does the ever evolving mind of Bob Dylan…its not 1965 anymore.

tunahelper | 2/4/2009, 7:24 pm EST

wow some of you folks are really wacked.Dylan does a nice commercial and the empire is lost.I thought it was quite entertaining and I am happy to see Dylan where ever I can.

Bob Dylan's Rocks | 2/4/2009, 8:18 pm EST

This was my favorite.super.bowl.ad.ever! It even beats coke’s “i’d like to teach the world to sing”.

I’m 47 and the whole rock ballad / rap hip hop juxtaposition works perfectly for me.

The video references were inspirational. This is the furthest from a sellout i can think of.

As i said.BEST.EVER.

haters: open your ears

gw | 2/5/2009, 7:03 am EST

really think he does it for the money?! with over a 100 shows a year i think he has plenty

Masked & Anonymous | 2/5/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Roger Waters? Nobody under the age of 50 cares what Roger Waters said about Bob Dylan. Four hundred years from now, NOBODY will care what about what’s-his-name. But they WILL care about Bob Dylan said.

A Roger Waters quote…good one. What’ll they think of next? Has Peter Frampton commented on Bob recently?

It would be ok if it wasn’t will.i.am Dylan is such an iconic figure. Isn’t there some other entertiner more fitting to juxtapose with Dylan? Is there a modern day Dylan… it ain’t will.i.im

I’ve Loved Dylan all my life, but what the !#$? man a commercial?

Hey Mr. Zimmerman
Pour a drink for me
I’m so thirsty and my caffeine levels sinking
Hey Mr. Zimmerman
Pour a drink for me
Make sure that it’s Pepsi that I’m Drinking

Though I might have seen dark shadows of cola’s in my mind
I have left them all behind
But for the one they all have been forsaken
Hey Mr. Zimmerman
Pour a drink for me
Make sure that it’s Pepsi when I awaken

Hey Mr. Zimmerman
Pour a drink for me
I’m not sleepy and there is no place I’m going to
Hey Mr. Zimmerman
Pour a drink for me
I will dance upon the sand a Pepsi in my hand
As my caffeine levels rise
I will open up eyes
I will have no fear of hate surrender to fate
In the jingle jangle morning I’ll come following you

Roger Waters is spot-on. This is a disgrace. Bob Dylan was once the primary face of the counterculture and now he’s sucking up to the very same Establishment he once portended to stand against. How can you call that “evolving”?

No wonder the hippies told us not to trust anyone over 30…

Bob Dylan | 3/28/2009, 10:36 am EST

Listen, folks. I never was a protest singer, I never was the leader of any movement. Period. I write songs and sing them because I like to. It also happens to be my way of making a living. If I want to do blooming commercial, what’s that got to do with you? Leave me alone forgoodnesssakes!

rainman | 4/7/2009, 10:25 pm EST

Do what you want Bob, but your legend died long ago anyway. Haven’t been any good since Blood On the Tracks in ‘75. Total phoney, I’m afraid

jayman | 8/12/2009, 11:25 pm EST

You know what. I love Dylan, seem him once live – great show. Know what else? His collaboration with Will i am made his “Forever Young” song 10 times better than the original.
