U2, Kid Rock, Plant & Krauss and Rihanna Added as Grammy Performers

1/29/09, 9:08 am EST

Think the Grammy lineup somehow needed even more firepower? U2, Kid Rock, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss and Rihanna have just been added to the already incredible list of performers at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, airing Sunday, February 8th. Let’s look at the roster now: Radiohead, Coldplay, Paul McCartney with Dave Grohl, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Jay-Z, T.I., Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Jonas Brothers, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Kenny Chesney, plus those four huge acts announced this morning. That’s like a dream Coachella lineup. While we credit the Grammys with doing everything humanly possible to convince people to watch this year’s broadcast, we have to wonder how they are going to have time to hand out awards. How long will this monster show run?

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss are up for five awards, including the prestigious Album of the Year. Now Ne-Yo is the lone Album of the Year candidate not performing at the show. U2 aren’t up for any awards, but they’re U2 and have a new album coming out and Bono has some special pass that lets him play anywhere, anytime he wants, so playing the Grammys on the biggest night in music makes perfect sense.

Rihanna is up for three awards, including Best Dance Recording for “Disturbia.” We’re predicting it right now: Bet on Rihanna being a part of that super-medley featuring Kanye, Jay-Z and T.I. doing “Swagga Like Us,” T.I. and Timberlake performing a song (probably “If I”) together and then assume T.I. and Rihanna will duet on “Live Your Life.” Likewise, while Kid Rock is nominated for Best Rock Album and Best Male Vocal Pop Performance for “All Summer Long,” we’d be shocked if Mr. Rock N Roll Jesus doesn’t share the stage with Lil Wayne at some point, like they did at the Country Music Awards.

With the addition of U2, this year’s telecast will feature arguably the three biggest bands on the planet right now (U2, Radiohead, Coldplay) along with the three biggest rappers (Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne) and a Beatle (McCartney.) Well done, Grammys. The Grammys also revealed the initial slate of special guest presenters: Jack Black, Duffy, actor Simon Baker, Charlie Haden, Josh Groban and Gwyneth Paltrow, who we’re really hoping introduces her husband’s band. Also, Samuel L. Jackson! We’re officially stoked for the Grammys, set to air live on February 8th from Los Angeles’ Staples Center. And be sure to check out of Grammy Faceoff ‘09 as our panel of celebrity experts predict these year’s winners in the biggest categories:

And the Winner Is… Grammy Faceoff ‘09

I agree RS. This is going to be an INCREDIBLE grammys this year.

They just need to add Pink,Leona Lewis and/or Adele and we are good to go. I suspect Beyonce will show up there too, since JAy-Z will be there performing. lol It is like the best of rock, rap, pop and country with Carrie Underwood.

Thank god they did not ask Miley or Taylor Swift to perform. (shudders) After that horrendous performance by Taylor Swift at the Grammy nominations concert, I am happy to see that the grammy people had a clue and asked Carrie Underwood to perform over Taylor. Then again, Taylor didn’t get any nominations anyway, thank God. Talk about an over-rated artist! She is the wost singer in any genre live, period.

Will.I.Am | 1/29/2009, 10:38 am EST

Yeah Taylor sucks big time. I am actually looking forward to this lineup. Kanye always brings it, and Lil Wayne will be on fire. I also enjoyed Carrie Underwood’s performance at the People’s Choice Awards. I am not a country fan, but the girl can BLOW! lol

kj | 1/29/2009, 11:07 am EST

sweet…..the grammy’s are turning into the MTV music awards……awesome. get the fuck out of here.

scott91777 | 1/29/2009, 11:35 am EST

Perfomance Prediction: Coldplay will perfrom Viva La Vida backed by an orchestra and Bono will step on stage as a suprise guest to deliver the second verse, then the performance will segue into U2’s “Get Your Boots” performed by both bands. You can almost bet on it.

Joe | 1/29/2009, 11:42 am EST

Scott, ya think Joe Satriani will show up too?

Mike | 1/29/2009, 12:11 pm EST

I like this lineup alot. They have popular acts combined with perennial grammy favorites like Allison Krauss, etc. I am looking forward to coldplay, U2, and Radiohead the most..and Carrie Underwood as she is one of the best live singers out there.

Allycat | 1/29/2009, 12:13 pm EST

I bet Beyonce, alicia keys and john mayer somehow find a way to sneak into the performance lineup, as they do every year. I am kind of getting sick of them so I hope they do not perfom this year. They are all talented, but it is time to showcase some other performers.

Moshi Moshi Baby Baby | 1/29/2009, 12:18 pm EST

I still wonder what precipitated Radiohead’s desire to both show up and perform.

oh lord. | 1/29/2009, 12:31 pm EST

waaaaaaaahhhhhhh Radiohead has “integrity” and they’re playing at the Grammys!!! waaaaaaahhhhhh

all these up and comers like fleet foxes mgmt kings of leon anyone you can name would KILL to play at the Grammys. What motivated Radiohead? they want to get their music to the widest audience possible. Just like U2. Just like Lil Wayne. Just like Kid Rock. Just like anyone who joins a band or picks up a guitar. Quit being so elitist and bourgeois. Your band is not precious and special and doesn’t belong to you.

disgusted | 1/29/2009, 12:38 pm EST

An industry in the rut, not because of digital music and the industry not knowing how to react to it (see party line), but in an industry in the rut because mediocrity is rewarded and quality music is not being produced. We live in a culture where basketball players get $100 million dollar contracts and vascular surgeons can’t pay their malpractice premiums. So an industry that, at this point, could be the most vapid industry in business, throws itself a self congratulatory party with a bunch of people (with admittedly a few exceptions-Plant and Krause, U2-although a good band, officially the most overated act in the history of music) who couldn’t perform in an orchestra (most of them probably don’t read music)and have the nerve to dabble in “glamour fabulousness, dahling” (poor taste?) while our world is devoured by climate change, political corruption, war, and corporate greed. The music industry has become nothing but a new branch of marketing, the public is not as stupid as the people who don’t live in “flyover country” think, and in 5 years the music industry as we know it know will be gone. People are looking for integrity, skill, and hope in their music-not great abs and pseudo intellectual bands like Coldplay or materialistic, immoral rappers “collaborating” on bullshit songs nobody even plays an instrument on. The Grammies are about glamour (maybe they should retitle them the Glammies!), not musical integrity and any self respecting musician should throw his/her invitation into the nearest wastebasket. Money IS glamorous, and LOW ratings equal trouble paying the light bill. Here’s hoping the lights go out on the grammies soon. I would rather be shot in the head and rolled up in that crappy red carpet and thrown in the New Orleans sewer after Mardi Gras that watch that crap fest.
Oh PS-Where did you guys find a writer that blows and rims artists and the industry so well? He used to write political exposes for Swank or Barely Legal? Obviously a man of true integrity.

Again. | 1/29/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Waaaaaaaaaaaah!!! THEN DONT WATCH.

reuben | 1/29/2009, 1:26 pm EST

i think ac-dc & metallica are the two biggest rock bands at this juncture..

Edward | 1/29/2009, 1:40 pm EST

I would have thought that Muse was bigger than Radiohead.

Red Johnson | 1/29/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Anyone here go to Las Vegas and then complain about how commerical and gaudy and ovverrated it is?

Sure | 1/29/2009, 2:22 pm EST

you aint really disgusted. If you want to go all the way underground and indie, you can. Boycott the show. Shut up.

Anonymous | 1/29/2009, 2:35 pm EST

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Robert Anthony Plant
’nuff said

OFFICIALLY??? | 1/29/2009, 2:38 pm EST

well if “disgusted” says so, then it must be true!!!!

what an elitist d-bag. College treatin you well, eh?

Anonymous | 1/29/2009, 2:49 pm EST

U2, Radiohead, Paul McCartney, and Robert Plant all performing in the same show, is a pretty big deal.

I normally don’t like to watch the Grammys, but I just may have to tune in this year.

Like a Dream Coachella Lineup? | 1/29/2009, 3:30 pm EST

This would be the LAMEST Coachella lineup ever. Half the fun of Coachella is discovering great bands that are hovering under the radar. Let’s ruin that too by having overrated and overpaid egomaniacs play a 3 minute and 25 second song you hear on the radio every day. Blah Blah Blah!

woah | 1/29/2009, 3:32 pm EST

this is one of the sickest line ups i have ever seen. . .

save the jonas brothers, get them the hell off that list!

curtis | 1/29/2009, 3:32 pm EST

BRITNEY SPEARS!!!
WE ARE WAINTING FOR …

happy | 1/29/2009, 3:34 pm EST

1. muse wishes they were radiohead (and don’t get me wrong, i actually do like muse).
2. ac/dc and metallica will never be the biggest bands in the world because to be the biggest band in the world, people have to want to listen to you.
3. radiohead released their last album totally free to the public… they have nothing to prove to anyone artistically. maybe they’re playing the grammys so that some music that actually has artistic depth gets broadcast across the world that night.

Jhock | 1/29/2009, 3:44 pm EST

Wow. For someone who seems to think he/she has many a bright and idea, “Disgusted” needs to learn how to put a coherent sentence together. Aside from that, calling U2 the most overrated band ever absolutely obliterates any chance for credibility. I do agree though in part, I think of the Grammys (by the way, that’s how you spell it, not “Grammies”) usually just a Pretty People Parade, an awards ceremony mainly based on sales instead of skill, but this year in particular there are some performers who are living legends. That deserves some respect. Got that “Bro”?

Wow, “disgusted”. You sound bitter.

“Quality music is not being produced”? Please. Have you even looked lately?

OK, clearly I’m not talking about the Jonas Bros. But there is great music out there. Just look at bands like The Airborne Toxic Event, The Killers, Kings of Leon, and Muse. Just to name a few.

So cheer up “disgusted”, and turn that frown upside down. All of these great bands should win in their respective categories. Right? …oh, wait…

Randy Johnson | 1/29/2009, 4:29 pm EST

U2 is pretty much where they should be in the pantheon. One of the Top 20 rock bands of all time. Overrated? here are some.

Genesis, post-Peter Gabriel
Jefferson Airplane/Starship
The Doors
ZZ Top
Nirvana
Chicago
Boston

Jethro Tull

diaencephalon | 1/29/2009, 4:58 pm EST

Radiohead is selling out for no reason. In Rainbows is an amazing album but the general public will never love it no matter how many copies it sells.
Most people prefer bland Coldplay.
And U2 is definitely the most over-rated band ever. They should be filed under Christian rock along with Creed and Stryper.

morgan scott | 1/29/2009, 5:08 pm EST

I just can’t figure out Kid Rock’s success. The guy raps over well-known hits (Bad Co. and Lynyrd Skynyrd) and sells millions of records. Familiarity rules! His audience must be really lazy. God bless him tho, he’s taking it to the bank.

glenn theory | 1/29/2009, 5:12 pm EST

c’mon guy and gals,
old “disgusted” isn’t totally off base with his sentiments. i LOVE U2 but they are slightly overrated…i think they look so huge because of the lack of “talent” that is being shoved down our throats by what’s left of the “misic biz”. you gotta admit that sometimes even Rolling Stone looks a little too much like Blender wasting time on some of thesenewer “pretty” indie groups. but maybe their trying to sell a couple extra copies in these hard economic times, i can understand that- i don’t always like it- but i understand it. anyways, i like half of what “disgusted” had to say and i applaud him/her for having the balls to say what they had to say. cheers

glenn theory | 1/29/2009, 5:30 pm EST

oh yeah, and the grammys do blow…
i wont watch em. who’s gonna win? whoever the critics have been giving head to for the last 12 or so months (some deserving/some not)..the last time i did watch the big show was to see “the boss” and elvis costello jam “london calling”- that was amazing.

Logan | 1/29/2009, 5:31 pm EST

Three of my favorite bands ever: Coldplay, Radiohead and U2.
I’m shaking in anticipation!

Disgusted Sucks | 1/29/2009, 5:56 pm EST

Hey Disgusted why dont you grow some balls and tell us what great line-up you would put together for the grammies. Come on go out on a limb and shut us all up!

Anonymous | 1/29/2009, 6:04 pm EST

Coldplay started out their career brilliantly. Parachutes is a really amazing record. There’s not a bad song on it.

Then they made A Rush Of Blood To The Head. A few decent tracks, but not nearly as good as its predecessor.

Then we get X & Y, which was one of the biggest pieces of garbage ever. (Though ‘Fix You’ was the one nice exception.)

But by this time, I’d had it with Coldplay. They put out Viva La Vida, and I couldn’t care less. Blech!

They went from being one of my favorite new bands in 2002, to my one my least favorites a few short years later, where i’m almost ashamed to admit I ever liked them.

ribeye | 1/29/2009, 6:08 pm EST

Disgusted is wrong about no good music being made anymore. There’s more good albums being made now than ever. They’re just not new, different, or original sounding. Also modern recording techniques make everything sound similar.

Anonymous | 1/29/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Just look at bands like The Airborne Toxic Event, The Killers, Kings of Leon, and Muse.

Muse and The Killers being “Great” music? Hardly. Plus it depends on what that person likes. The killers have about 10 good songs, one of them is from the new album… as for muse, listen to one of their songs, it’s hard to make it all the way through.

Moby Griff | 1/29/2009, 6:14 pm EST

Yeah, I guess a band that has been around for 30 years and released at least 3 (and arguably 5) seminal rock and roll classic albums, dozens of instantly recognizable top 40 hits, continued innovation and passion in their live shows, a body of work that stands up against any band out there, a completely stable lineup, over 150 million records sold, and yes over 20 Grammy awards won qualifies you as overrated. Has there been any other band to accomplish what U2 has accomplish, and has yet to accomplish? No. Call them overrated if you will, but every damn band wants what they have, regardless of what they say.

That Guy | 1/29/2009, 6:14 pm EST

yeah, Coldplay got too big by means of overhyping way too fast.

They copy U2’s entire model for albums, but too quickly. Parachute’s was a Boy/October rolled into one, then they left out War/Unforgettable and went to to Joshua for Rush of Blood, then they did the whole Achtung with Viva…

Anyone with any common sense and understanding of music history knows Coldplay is bogus… musically and vocally, their lyrics are just horrible.

That Guy

Tom | 1/29/2009, 6:47 pm EST

Should be interesting to see if the Grammys once again get low TV ratings despite their stellar lineup. We shall see.

mama | 1/29/2009, 7:00 pm EST

to: that guy
coldplay is rally one of the best bands around.
three of their albums (minus x&y) are some of the greatest of this decade and this century.
these guys are def one of the best bands around including radiohead and u2

greg | 1/29/2009, 7:13 pm EST

All we need is the Killers and then we will have the last 3 “next U2s” there with U2 (Radiohead, Coldplay). Speaking of which, how many “next U2’s” have there been? Too many to count anymore…

goo goo | 1/29/2009, 7:17 pm EST

Coldplay’s most ambitious record was Rush of Blood. X and Y and Vida were identical.

glenn theory | 1/29/2009, 8:30 pm EST

i never said U2 wasn’t great. they are one of my favorite bands but, i know plenty of people who can’t stand them…but lets talk about bad music for a minute and i have not checked to see if they are grammy nominated or not, but the #1 case in point of BAD music being made and promoted and selling 7million copies of a terrible record—-NICKELBACK!
can anyone explain this phenomenon to me?

Anonymous | 1/29/2009, 9:27 pm EST

I want Foo Fighters to perform!!!

jew | 1/29/2009, 10:22 pm EST

how can radiohead be the next u2????? ya they got similiraties but radiohead is radiohead by itself ppl come on

TomSawyer | 1/30/2009, 3:29 am EST

Radiohead this, U2 that, blah blah blah…

Will somebody please tell Robert Plant to get his head out of his ass and tour with Zep?!? I was so psyched when I heard that Zep was going to tour with Bonzo’s son. Now…

I guess I’m a little bitter.

And somebody please tell me how Colplay got to be so huge. My God what a bunch of ninnies.

Kids these days…

Rick | 1/30/2009, 7:29 am EST

Leave it to Bono & U2 to crash the Grammys, even though they`re not nominated for anything. They gotta get the hype started early for their March CD release. After signing a 12 year long contract with Live Nation, U2 has guaranteed that they will slowly fade away over the next decade, when they could`ve bowed out while they were still on top.

happy | 1/30/2009, 9:18 am EST

It IS better to fade away than burn out. The problem with burning out is that whole dieing thing.
U2 is over-rated. I love them, but they haven’t made an artistically important album since Achtung Baby (okay, I’ll allow you Zooropa, but that’s it). They are old, and can’t be expected to be the ones at the forefront anymore.
A lot of people can’t stand them… the same way I can’t stand Kid Rock or Nickelback or any of that idiotic country music. Coldplay has gotten worse since A Rush of Blood, Radiohead hit their prime with OK Computer… and somehow have never lost it.
And YES, Plant needs to get over his Kraus crap and tour with Zeppelin. Who knows, maybe he doesn’t like his lemon squeezed anymore?
In any case, this Grammys show will be the best in a long time… probably the best in my lifetime anyway.

Nmar | 1/30/2009, 10:11 am EST

Cool!! Love U2!!! Can’t wait for No Line!!! The Music biz has struggled for way too long and seeing U2 perform is always a pleasure. Great lineup of performers.

tunabreath | 1/30/2009, 11:11 am EST

To Edward:

“I would have thought that Muse was bigger than Radiohead”.
—————— ——————

Um, what planet are you living on? Muse is good, but Radiohead are one of the most talented and highly regarded bands out there.

Pamela | 1/30/2009, 1:23 pm EST

I´m looking forward to this year´s Grammys, because exactly three of my favourite bands will perform there: U2, Radiohead and Coldplay. These bands give me everything I expect from music: intensity, credibility, energy, intelligence and emotion.

After recording the show I will watch it for…ah…how many times?

niall | 1/30/2009, 2:46 pm EST

why is everyone complaining. the biggest and best are playing and ye want better. the onyl way your going to see a better line up is if you go back in time to the eighties. i understand that some i you have bad taste in music and would rather listen to the predicable bon jovi or the talentless noise makers foo fighter. but we have to put our choices aside and agree that u2 are the best band since the beetles. i also understand what all the hype around kings of leon and coldplay is about but come on anyone who says radiohead are in the top three beside muse need there head tested i feel like crying when i hear radiohead but manage to hold back the tears of depression then i hear muse and get angry that good dj’s use up quality air time to play there rubbish mush should add an extra word to there name i’m thinking ‘MUSE SHIT’ if anyone out there agrees with me please post a comment and tell me what you think of u2s new song

Me Grimlock | 1/30/2009, 3:34 pm EST

U2’s new song is quite a rush, but I hope they play another new tune from the upcoming album at the grammys…would be awesome to get another sneak preview

ribeye | 1/30/2009, 7:52 pm EST

U2 have a handful of great songs but are they one of the top 20 bands of all time? Maybe they are one of the top 20 Irish bands of all time. Or Christian bands. But c’mon not of all bands.

Quentin G | 1/30/2009, 8:40 pm EST

It really is maddening to see coldplay haters all around. i love coldplay, parachutes to viva la vida. And for that guy who says viva la vida and x & y are identical: wow. coldplay deserves every nomination it got. (not to win them all though, give them a couple and share the love with kings of leon)

Glad to see the raconteurs get a nod for best rock album (still an underappreciated band) and paper planes get a nod for best song it is definitely sick.

Is there an indie category for bands like fleet foxes? i feel like they should be awarded for something because that album was really good

by the way…new franz ferdinand rocks!

Quentin G | 1/30/2009, 8:47 pm EST

oh and fuck that guy who said the doors are overrated

Father | 1/30/2009, 10:11 pm EST

The Doors are overrated.

Glenn Campbell Soup | 1/30/2009, 10:13 pm EST

Fuck these peeeepole

OH I GET IT!!! | 1/31/2009, 12:09 am EST

These lame attempts at hipster cool and humor are laughable.

bluzmama | 1/31/2009, 1:44 am EST

I cannot warm up to Coldplay. A few of their songs are good but I’ve never been inspired to buy an album.

Frankly I wish that more people became interested in Bugs Henderson. For an older guy he’s pretty radical on his most recent album. But the current wave of music is boring. Even in the blues categories the Grammies rarely show any imagination. Same old, same old.

I’m looking forward to Plant/Krauss but for the life of me I’ve never understood why Kid Rock is a so-called star. As far as I can see he’s a talentless, homely, stringy-haired douche bag.

Big Bad Booty Daddy | 1/31/2009, 5:09 pm EST

Most of us associate the blues (sadness) as the main emotion that can be wrung out of a guitar. The Edge has spent a career creating his own emotional landscapes of joy with it. Incredible guitar player.

For those of you badmouthing Kid Rock by saying he’s not talented enough to be grouped with this bunch, I’d like to see you pick up an instrument or a microphone and do what he does yourself. Make yourself a few million dollars… since it’s so complex and all.

Kid Rocks with “All Summer Long” which uses the music of “Werwolves of London” written by the awesome Leroy Marinel. It was his song not Warren’s…If Kid Rock thanks any body it should be Leroy Marinell.

For all you KID ROCK haters -Try listening to ALL of his new CD not just the songs played on the radio!
He does country, rock, rap, blues and it is all his own music except for that one song. He is very talented and creative and you are just jealous because your Liberal ass is too boring! FUCK U2 -they are a bunch of hippy Liberals that suck!LIBS BELONG IN CRIBS!They think that they are saving the world but they are really destroying it faster! HOLLYWOOD is all going to die and go to hell and you all are apparently going to follow them!

talent scout | 2/10/2009, 12:34 pm EST

The industry has been taken over by ex-convicts and no talent hacks. And Americans sit there like the sheeple they are, to afraaaaiid to say what they really think about it all. How many more rappers can they fit on a TV screen? How many more Disney test tube babies can they create before the public says they have had enough. I have seen very minimal true, natural talent come to the center stage. Its been since the late 80s, early to mid nineties. AMERICA NEEDS ROCK BANDS, you know, remember the old requirement of,,, we better make a good follow up album or we will be out on our asses. Today 1 studio produced bubble gum hit keeps guys like skid mark or kid rock whatever alive for upwards of 10-12 years. Also, the rap industry needs to be taken back down to where it belongs, thats right, I said it.
It may be a stretch for an example but,, many famous dictators in the past repeated messages and propaganda to the people until they would finally break down and believed what they were being told.
The music industry and MTV has done just that with the rapper blitz. We have been forced to accept it as talent beyond belief,, what a crock of shit literally. 10% of the rappers deserve to be there, Snoop, LL,,Diddy,,Lil Wayne is alright but dude. They made up over half the performances all the crappers. Give some hard working (Band,, instrument playing,,)talent out there a shot MTV… stop the blitz Industry Hacks!! Get back to the root of music. Search the country over and get back to us.
Peace
PS Dont be a hater, my opinion is my opinion
Coldplay,, give me a sappy break!
Guess its been a long time since the judges Rock And Rolled
