On the Charts: Taylor Swift Enjoys One Last Week On Top As Indie Rockers Invade

The Big News: Taylor Swift’s Fearless enjoyed what’s likely to be its last week at Number One, selling another 62,000 copies to top another week of poor overall sales. Beyoncé’s I Am… Sasha Fierce and Nickelback’s Dark Horse remained entrenched at Number Two and Three. Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak rose up one spot to four thanks to 39,000 in sales and the Twilight soundtrack rounded out the top five. Only one debut managed to crack the top 10, as Mariah Carey’s Ballads compilation arrived at 10.

Debuts: With sales slumping yet again, it was an indie rock party in the upper echelon of the charts. Andrew Bird’s Noble Beast bowed at 12, while Animal Collective’s acclaimed Merriweather Post Pavilion scored 13th place with 24,000 copies. By comparison, AC’s previous album Strawberry Jam debuted at Number 72 in 2007. Bon Iver and his Blood Bank EP landed at 16 and Antony & The Johnsons’ Crying Light hit the chart at 65.

Last Week’s Heroes: The Top 10 essentially stayed the same from last week, with only David Cook’s self-titled exiting and Mariah Carey’s Ballads entering. The Notorious soundtrack suffered the largest drop, falling from four to nine thanks to a 32 percent sales drop. Bottom line? Taylor Swift enjoyed her two-month vacation atop the charts, but the fun ends next week as Bruce Springsteen and his five-star Working on a Dream seem like a lock to claim Number One.

I have now heard 4 songs off of Fearless and there is absolutely nothing new or special about it. But, of course, nothing offensive or challenging about it either, which means the Wal-Mart Bible Belt will be all over it.

Sarah | 1/28/2009, 12:14 pm EST

Hiya Joe maybe you should listen to the whole album it’s awesome. It’s one of the most special albums I ever heard and own and it’s obvious special to a lot of others for an artist to sale 2.4 million copies in just a few short weeks. Check out her debut album also it’s #2 and it was released 117 weeks ago! It’s been in the top 10 for over 2 years! Amazing album too!

Joe | 1/28/2009, 12:31 pm EST

If you are a teenaged girl then yeah, I’m sure its special. But I heard this already with Faith Hill, Shania Twain, etc etc. I will admit as to not having heard the album. But the rest of the songs have to be a major departure from what I’ve already heard to make it “special”. Teenage girls relate to her. Nothing wrong with that. I don’t.

Joe | 1/28/2009, 12:34 pm EST

“Our Song” is nearly a direct ripoff of Sugarland’s “Baby Girl” melodically.

kellz | 1/28/2009, 12:47 pm EST

I don’t understand the big fuss over Taylor Swift. I know that she writes her own songs, and has a nack for telling stories in her music, but I would like to hear her sing a little better live than she has lately. I heard her sing that “Love Story” song live, and maybe the album is good, but I tend to like performers who can perform their songs live at least at the same level that you hear on the radio. I’ve seen her perform three times now, and for someone who has the number one album, she should be performing better than she does. That’s just my opinion. I find her to be quite pitchy and sometimes just downright off key. On the AMA’s her performance wasn’t very good to me to say the least. I think she’s pretty and appeals to young girls who want to be like her and guys who want her. I think her best talent is storytelling as oppossed to singing. She doesn’t even compare vocally to great country singers like Martina McBride, Leanne Rymes (not sure if I spelled that right), Carrie Underwood, Leanne Womack. Ok, I’m done.

Sarah | 1/28/2009, 12:58 pm EST

Joe, people of all ages can relate to Taylors music. She has fans from three generations in my home and I’m a very active member of CMT and most of her fans there are between 18-60 years old.

Also, If you believe ‘Our Song’ sounds like Sugarland’s “Baby Girl” melodically, then Sugarland ripped it off from Taylor because ‘Our Song’ Taylor wrote and performed in a 7th grade talent show six years ago and has it on video, it’s all over the web and if you check “Baby Girl” was released wayyyyy after that!

Kristy | 1/28/2009, 1:05 pm EST

I will tell you what the fuss is about. Taylor is amazing. She’s such a unique singer and person. Her voice is so pure and real. Her songs are hers and she sings them with a passion that many others don’t have. Don’t get me wrong I love singers like Martina McBride, Leann Rimes, and Leanne Womack to, but Taylor has the ‘it’ factor that ’special appeal’ the others don’t have.

Music Fan | 1/28/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Taylor is one of the best artist out today. I agree with Kristy, Tayor has a very unique and appealing voice there’s a purity about it that just grabs you. I could sit and listen to her 24/7.

Also hers a tidbit of info for “Fearless” to demonstate it’s appeal.– “In its debut week, seven songs in total on Fearless were charted on Billboard Hot 100, tying Swift for the most songs by any other artist in a single week. When “White Horse” charted at #13, this gave Swift her sixth top 20 debut of 2008, a calendar year record for any artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. Of the 13 tracks on Fearless, 11 have already spent time on the Hot 100.”

C’mon 11 of 13 tracks? That is freaking amazing!

Joe | 1/28/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Again, nothing special. we can agree to disagree.

jenna | 1/28/2009, 2:22 pm EST

most people who talk about taylor or compare her to other artist, tend to forget that she writes her own songs, unlike mostly everyone out there. yes her voice is worse than a lot of famous singers, but i will take writing ability over singing any day. that being said she still sings great, but writing about her experiences is what gives her so many fans and makes people relate

christy | 1/28/2009, 2:25 pm EST

she does write all of her songs unlike mostly everyone else, her fans relate to those experiences

Reality Check | 1/28/2009, 2:57 pm EST

What makes her special to others in her age group is the same theing that makes the Jonas Brothers special. Their age. And since they don’t challenge anyone or any genre and are a “safe bet” with parents, then that’s why they sell so much. Absolutely nothing wrong with it at all.

JP | 1/28/2009, 3:32 pm EST

Anyone who is a fan of Taylor Swift, do yourself a favor and check out the album “Pretty Runs Out” by Amanda Shaw. She is 18 year old fiddle prodigy from Louisana. She is head and shoulders above Taylor Swift in regards to singing, songwriting, and performance. This is one country album that unjustly overlooked last year.

Pharaoh4 | 1/28/2009, 4:03 pm EST

Taylor Swift is hot and has songs that kids like. Kids still buy music. That will always win. Case Closed

Olman | 1/28/2009, 7:26 pm EST

I don’t know what is the sensation with Taylor, everybody say is because of her age and the fact that she writes her on songs I mean common when Michelle Branch appears she was the same age and wrote and produced the songs o the album and has better voice than this girl but her success wasn’t that big (well she won in the vmas and the grammys) but Im talking about sales.
I just dont understand this

eightball | 1/28/2009, 7:39 pm EST

Taylor Swift can’t sing with two shits live. That right there SHOULD demote her in anyone’s eyes, knowing that she is a studio singer.

Tana | 1/28/2009, 8:39 pm EST

This is very sad. There is nothing special about her, just someone else in the crowd. Her lyrics are average. Her voice is pretty much a pain in the ass. Maybe she should start selling calendars..

Anonymous | 1/28/2009, 10:39 pm EST

This is sad, so the #1 album sucks? Is that the first. I’ll do you a favor, just copy and paste the following comment.
I cant believe that people are wasting money on crap like (insert popular artist) when there are great artists like (insert pretentious indie band) making great music. When will people learn?

Youre welcome

Arcade Fire sucks

Rocco | 1/28/2009, 11:18 pm EST

Listened to Amanda Shaw. She’s good, and the drummer must have produced her record. Man, that snare drum is too loud.

Anonymous | 1/28/2009, 11:18 pm EST

I didn’t get what the big deal with Taylor Swift was until I heard the song “Hey Stephen”. Structurally, it’s a nearly flawless pop song, with some pretty ingenious hooks. I didn’t know who it was at the time and never would have pegged it for country. Lyrically she still leaves quite a bit to be desired; here’s to hoping she runs out of boys to trash for the next album. She’ll be around for a while.

MC Hammer-Please Hammer Dont Hurt Em—-#1 Album

Vanilla Ice-to the Extreme—#1 Album

Milli Vanilli-Gilr You Know It’s true—#1 Album

Just because it’s #1, doesn’t necessarily make it GOOD.

HAIL PRINCESS TAYLOR! | 1/29/2009, 11:53 am EST

TAYLOR SWIFT is the most beautiful irl in the USA! Only fat chicks and loser guys don’t like AMERICA’S PRINCESS!

Indie rock SUX!

mmm... | 1/29/2009, 12:34 pm EST

Dan | 1/29/2009, 1:01 pm EST

There is nothing special about Taylor Swift and that is the key to her popularity? Oh? She writes her own songs?….Every one of her songs is virtually the same both structurally and harmonically; every verse and chorus is a I-V-vi-IV (sometimes I-V-ii-IV) with a bridge using the same chords in a slightly different order. Her music is easy to get into because it all sounds familiar (that chord progression is all over pop music).

I find it amazing that Rollingstone has never pointed this out; it’s becoming clearer and clearer that their reviewers know nothing about music but everything about pop culture.

dunner56 | 1/29/2009, 1:35 pm EST

HATL PRINCESS TAYLOR, please, let the adults talk. I know about 100 people personally who don’t like unintelligent, predictable, shitty pop music like hers and none of them are fat chicks or losers. To be honest, the only people who do like her music are spoiled, stupid, ordinary high school sluts like you. So go away and leave good music to people who have 3 digits in their IQ’s

Callie | 1/29/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Taylor is just an all around awesome singer/songwriter/producer she plays guitar. The young lady is so multi-talented it isn’t funny. Taylor has this wholesome pure appeal about her. The young lady sings with such passion and soul that her voice is amazing, appealing and unique more so than any other artist. She has this ‘it’ factor and that is appealing to all ages, not just the kids. Check out her 25-75 fan group at Taylor Swift CMT message board.

Callie | 1/29/2009, 1:47 pm EST

dunner56 if you had 3 digits in your IQ you would know how to spell and not leave an un-intelligent post like you did.

HAIL PRINCESS TAYLOR | 1/29/2009, 3:05 pm EST

“Surprise You’re Gay” by Def Karaoke Jam is better than anything on Taylor’s album though…

Future ICON. | 1/29/2009, 3:50 pm EST

ALL indie rock sounds the same to me.I like Taylor Swift, she will be a 21st century icon someday.

I like her but her voice isn’t THAT special.

lamar | 1/30/2009, 2:20 pm EST

I agree, listen to Amanda Shaw. Way better than Taylor Swift.

ugh | 1/30/2009, 3:08 pm EST

ugh ugh ugh taylor swift is ugh her music is ugh

Whenever I hear her songs on the radio, which is alot for being so crappy, I change the station, her voice is killing my brain…also she must be a slut if she can write about so many boys.

DORF | 1/31/2009, 9:54 am EST

Just what we need, more suburban country crap, and that’s exactly what Taylor Swift is – I’m sure she fits right in on CMT. Loretta Lynn still has more talent in her right nipple then Swift has in her entire body.

The only sound I’d like to hear coming from Taylor Swift’s mouth is moaning and screaming while I’m doing her up the ass.

raisedlefteyebrow | 1/31/2009, 5:30 pm EST

screw swift. the real story is the coming indie takover of the charts.

Red | 1/31/2009, 11:44 pm EST

Ok, I just listened to Pretty runs out by That Amanda Shaw chic. Whoever said she was better than Taylor Swift must be tone deaf, she must be the worst thing I’ve heard next to someone running there fingermails across a chalkboard.

DAVID COOK RULZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

JP | 2/1/2009, 4:07 pm EST

I don’t expect everyone who embraced the bland pop-country sound of Taylor Swift to like Amanda Shaw. To everyone who did check her out, I thank you. “Pretty Runs Out” was my pick for best album of the year. It hardly got any press or airplay. It frustrating to be a country music fan when mainstream radio and music networks play nothing but acts who are regurgitating the template established by Garth Brooks and Shania Twain over ten years ago.

John, TRS | 2/2/2009, 1:20 am EST

Animal Collective songs to dig, for those interested:

- Leaf House
- Grass
- #1
- Water Curses
- In the Flowers

Going in chronological order of their release. Leaf House is arguably their most outright pop song structurally so that’s a good start. Water Curses (and WC EP itself) doesn’t get enough praise when it came out.

Merriweather Post Pavilion is the best record of 2009, musically and sonically.

lamar | 2/3/2009, 10:11 am EST

In responce to RED, your ears are obviously trained to listen to over produced music and not real music.

taylor swift rocks and i love her music i lisen to it every day and i learned to play it on my guitar i think she is good and u all are stupid to say that stuff

Sandy | 4/23/2009, 1:22 am EST

Amanda Shaw is the best thing since sliced bread!
I`m listening to “Pretty Runs Out” right now. She is an environmental activist, A magnetic performer, A seasoned professional at 18 yrs. old, and she takes the time to talk to her fans after the show. She grew up in New Orleans and embraces many musical styles. If she doesn`t become A huge star the world is really missing out! I hear she likes A good crawfish boil too, my kind of girl!

courtney | 5/12/2009, 11:07 am EST

look, we all have our own opinion about Taylor. But, to me Taylor is my role-model. The person I look up to. Taylor hasn’t done very many things wrong. unlike miley who likes posing on top of her father. but anyway, her lyrics are good and i can relate to them. she is a person to look up to. don’t forget about that! she is one of the only stars that is greatful for her fame and realizes that it is because of us that she is famous. this keeps her down to earth.

gaetano | 5/21/2009, 10:01 am EST

allie | 8/22/2009, 7:55 am EST

Ok so taylor is a great girl- pretty and kind.
But seriously- she can’t sing!!!
The only people who like her music are teenagers who like the lyrics because they relate to them. But her songs have no real melody and her tone is terrible.
Sorry fans- but please listen to some real music!
