News Ticker: Smashing Pumpkins, “Thriller,” PJ Harvey and Frank Black

1/28/09, 9:55 am EST

  • A new Smashing Pumpkins song, “FOL,” will debut during the Super Bowl as the soundtrack for a Hyundai commercial. The 30-second ad will premiere in the commercial block right before the kick-off this Sunday, February 1st. Stay tuned to RS for rock coverage from the big game.

  • “Thriller” director John Landis is suing Michael Jackson for royalties owed for the video, E! reports. Landis estimates Jackson owes him roughly $1 million in royalties, especially considering Jacko recently signed a deal to turn “Thriller” into a Broadway show.
  • Speaking of Broadway, PJ Harvey has written the score for a current adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler.” “I’ve wanted to do theater or film music since I first began writing music. I’ve just never been approached before,” Harvey told the New York Daily News.
  • Pixies’ Frank Black and his wife Violet Clark will release an album together under the name Grand Duchy. Pitchfork reports that their debut album, dubbed Petits Fours, is out April 14, or February 16th if you live in the U.K.
