Lynyrd Skynyrd Keyboardist Billy Powell Dead at 56

Billy Powell, the only keyboardist Lynyrd Skynyrd ever had, died last night at his home near Jacksonville, Florida. He was 56. No cause of death has been announced, and a post on the official Skynyrd Website reads, “A Great Loss — Beloved Pianist for the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, Billy Powell, passed away last night. We will post more info shortly. The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you.” The band is canceling upcoming shows and directing fans to its Website for tour updates.

Powell first joined Skynyrd in 1973 after serving as the band’s roadie for a year. His keyboard work features prominently on the band’s debut (pronounced ‘leh-’nerd ’skin-’nerd), with Powell credited for crafting the intro for their epic anthem “Free Bird” (Number 191 on Rolling Stone’s Greatest Songs of All Time). After impressing Ronnie Van Zant with his work on the song, Powell was officially invited to join the band, and remained a member from their debut album until 1977’s Street Survivors.

Powell survived the 1977 plane crash that took the lives of singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and other crew members. Despite suffering injuries including facial lacerations and nearly losing his nose, Powell was the first to be discharged from the hospital and was the only member to attend his bandmates’ funerals. After Skynyrd, Powell joined the Christian rock band Vision, but reunited with Skynyrd after a decade-long hiatus for some concerts in 1989, and ultimately remained with the band until now. In May, Skynyrd played their first-ever gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden with Kid Rock.

Powell and the rest of his Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmates were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. With Powell’s death, guitarist Gary Rossington becomes the lone surviving original Skynyrd member touring with the band.

This article really downplays his role in the plane crash. Billy was credited for saving bandmates lives by pulling them from the wreckage.

Sad day indeed- only 56!!! Way too young!

And Allen as well is there with you Billy!! We will never forget you!!

peterk | 1/28/2009, 1:55 pm EST

Truly devastated. Is there an error in the article? Billy didn’t start with them til 72 and didn’t Ricky Medlock start out as their drummer?? That would make Ricky and Gary the lone surviving original members. Anyone got answers?

St pooch | 1/28/2009, 1:56 pm EST

SIMPLEMAN CRUISER | 1/28/2009, 1:56 pm EST

I’m so glad I got to go on the SIMPLEMAN CRUISE Jan 8-12 and got my picture taken with Billy and the band. They are the nicest most down-to-earth people anyone could have EVER meet. White loafers with no socks and big dark sunglasses was the way Billy rolled. God rest your soul baby.

YOU WILL BE MISSED.

No, Ed King is still around, so that two.

Kelly T (z95.3) | 1/28/2009, 2:10 pm EST

I received a phone call this morning saying our promo was off for the Skynyrd Biloxi show this Saturday. After gearing all the Skynyrd fans up out there, it was so hard to have to relay the sad sad news to them. The calls have been pouring in with Skynyrd fans sharing their heartfelt feelings. Billy will be missed immensely! We hold Billy Powell up with highest honor and will keep the Powell family as well as the Skynyrd family in our hearts and prayers. May you rest in peace my friend.

Orange | 1/28/2009, 2:19 pm EST

Ed King was not an “original Skynyrd member” and he left in 1975.

Generation Mike | 1/28/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Actually, there are 4 originals left: Gary, Ricky, Ed King and original drummer Bob Burns.. as usual, Rolling Stone does not know what they are talking about.

RIP Billy.. you were the one of the best southern keyboardists around.. I hope ARS’s Dean Daughtry is up to taking over the mantle.

Chris | 1/28/2009, 2:30 pm EST

Actually the original drummer who I have met is Bob Burns… to my knowledge he is still living…

lamar p | 1/28/2009, 2:30 pm EST

billy powell has his on style that noone can clone we will miss him.

Sheryl Bryant | 1/28/2009, 2:31 pm EST

We on this Earth just lost one of the greatest keyboardist of all times. I hope Rolling Stone devotes a major section to Billy Powell posthumously. He, like the rest of the superb musicians in Lynyrd Skynryd who were so often slighted by the magazine, deserves better. A 1/4 page tribute just won’t get it for a musician of this magnitude. Think it about Jann!

Utah man | 1/28/2009, 2:35 pm EST

What a great loss to the R&R world.Nobody tickled the ivory’s
like Billy in that Sweet Southern style.God be with you Billy and your Huge family.RIP

CC | 1/28/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Met him at the mall of america and when I asked him who Tuesday was all he could do was laugh. He is missed.

Orange | 1/28/2009, 2:39 pm EST

Was Bob Burns still in the group when the band name changed to Lynyrd Skynyrd? He was definitely in the pre-Skynyrd original band lineup, but I thought he left before returning later.

Jules | 1/28/2009, 2:43 pm EST

LS became my favorite band because of Billy on piano and remained so for 28 years. Saw many times in concert and Gimme 3 days cruise. I never cried when a famous person died before, but this brings tears to my eyes! Now I don’t mind dyin cuz the LS band will be there.

Billy | 1/28/2009, 2:53 pm EST

I was lucky enough to meet Billy inm 1987 in CAmbridge, MA (a now defunct club called Jonathan Swifts). He played on a double bill withj Mark Farner (Grand Funk) and I met Billy before the show and he was the coolest and nicest guys to me and all around. A true gentleman (as was Farner too) and I will miss him!!

Dixie-Man | 1/28/2009, 2:55 pm EST

You played it pretty Dude! And you will never be forgotten. Thank You Billy. RIP

Damon Clement | 1/28/2009, 2:56 pm EST

As a self-taught keyboardist, Billy Powell was and is still my all-time favorite. His style unlike no other, inspired me in so many ways and he will always be one of the most influential people in my life. Losing Billy saddens me greatly, but I know he’s in a better place now. Rest in Peace Billy. I love ya and thanks for the many many years of your great talent and inspiration. You will be missed but never forgotten. Peace – Damon C -

Noooooo. I sit at my desk a greatly saddened man today.
Thankfully I have seen him perform several times, but as a fan of Skynyrd from the 70’s straight through to now, I am truly heartbroken.
To his family, friends, and bandmates… He meant so much to so many, and we all hope he is jamming again with the rest of Skynyrd up in heaven.
Sad, sad day.

Time to get Ed King & Bob Burns or Artimus Pyle back, so they’re not all replacements. R.I.P. Billy.

This is as tragic as when Elvis died. “Billy Powell on the piano” will live forever in the minds of true Skynyrd fans. I have met and talked to Billy on several different occassions when they played in West Virginia and he always would give you as much of his time and talk about anything you wanted to discuss. God broke the mold after Billy was made and there never will be another. Play that beautiful music throughout Heaven Billy. We all love you and will truly miss you. Please pray for Ellen and his entire family, both at home and with the band.

I’m only 28 and not many people in my family have passed away. I’ve been listening to bands like Skynyrd and Pink Floyd since I was 16. When members of the band die I feel like a small part of what I grew up with has move on as well.

Art | 1/28/2009, 5:56 pm EST

Tragedy continues to haunt this great band – undoubtedly one of America’s best rock ‘n roll groups (they are more than just a southern rock band). Billy had the chops but he, in many ways, was also the heart of Skynyrd, as we currently know them. To lose him is just as devastating as it would have been had we lost Gary Rossington. Because though Skynyrd is known to so many as a classic guitar band, without Billy’s piano and keys, it wouldn’t been the same nor had the same impact. I can’t imagine the band continuing now, but we will see. When Billy was interviewed on TV while in bandages, bruised and cut after the infamous plane crash that took Ronnie, Steve and Cassie he was asked if Lynyrd Skynyrd would continue, and he respectfully answered: “I don’t think so.” Yet we know they did continue, bringing their music and amazing live concert prowess to millions all over the world. We don’t know how the band moves forward from this immense loss, but we can only hope that whatever it is they do, that it will keep the memories of Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Leon and now Billy in high regard and with deep respect. R.I.P. Billy Powell.

Rickey Medlocke was behind the drumkit the night Ronnie Van Zant announced from the stage that the band’s name would be Lynyrd Skynyrd. So yes, that does make him an original member. Rickey left Skynyrd before they hit it big, had a great run with his group Blackfoot, then was invited by Gary Rossington to rejoin in 1996 as a lead guitarist.

With tears in my eye, I write this. As a 46 yr old man who has been following you since 1977, I can say I felt the tragedy of losing a family member when I read of your passing. I had the pleasure of seeing Skynyrd twice in 2008, the last at the Harley davidson 105 in Milwaukee. Billy, you were lights out that night! I will forever remember you on the pedestal turning in circles and the sound of your piano filling the night sky as you pounded out free bird! Rest in peace free bird, the world has lost a terrific man!

Greg, Atlanta | 1/28/2009, 8:39 pm EST

Billy, you played it pretty for Atlanta and the rest of the world. Play it pretty in heaven my brother. An amazing musician and class act. Your legacy is within the hearts and minds of all who loved your music. Rest well, Billy, Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Leon, Allen and Dean. God Bless you all and the joy you each brought to my life.

The man was on borrowed time and very lucky that he didn’t die in the plane crash that claimed so many of his bandmates. He seems to have spent his second chance doing what he loved to do. That’s all you could ask and continued to provide Skynard fans with the music they love. Godspeed.

Zeke | 1/28/2009, 9:07 pm EST

What a sad day for the Skynyrd Nation. I got hooked on LS back in ‘73-’74 when I heard Free Bird for the very first time. BP’s talent’s drew you in and the rest of the band kept you there! When you listen to the the music closely
you really hear how talented they are. The truely have been underrated in regards to their talent and their contributions to music as a whole. Billy we’re really going to miss you. I know God, Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Dean, Allen and Leon are ready to jam. RIP

I became an instant fan when I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd the first time in 1974. I have enjoyed your music through the years and I have introduced your music to alot of people of different ages. Lynyrd Skynyrd is my all time favorite band, number one on my list every time. I have met you and talked to you and it hurts to hear of the passing of Billy. He was awesome playing the piano. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and bandmates. Play on in heaven Billy.

So weird, I brought his story about Cassie Gaines dying in his arms up out of the blue with a friend yesterday… Maybe his spirit sent a pulse of his vibe out on its way onward.

All the best to his family – He lived a couple lifetimes in one, short life.

Robert | 1/28/2009, 10:25 pm EST

Another sad day in Rock & Roll history. Billy my friend, you will be missed dearly.

Please not, Gary Rossington would not be the ONLY remaining original LS member. Rickey Medlocke is also a founding member. Rickey was the bands first drummer.

I met Billy Powell in the local Best Buy not so long ago…he was a great guy with so much talent and a real appreciation for his fans! He’s now in heaven’s rock & roll band and his great contribution to
Lynyrd Skynyrd lives on forever!

What a shock to hear of Billy`s passing today. Growing up with such great music and then a loss such as this…makes one really reflect on things. You were a remarkable musician Billy and will be missed dearly. But never forgotten!! Rest in peace my friend and tell the guys on that stage up above that LS music is just as popular today as it was back in the day. Farewell!!!!!!!

Jimmy | 1/28/2009, 10:57 pm EST

I first saw Lynyrd Skynyrd when they did the tribute tour. I was not one of the lucky ones to get to see the entire original group. Watching Billy play the piano, you could tell that it was not a job to him, but rather he was doing something he loved to do and you could tell he was having fun with it. Recalling him playing the piano, live on on DVD, always made me smile to hear such beautiful playing. A definite musical artist has now left us. If there is a rock n roll heaven…they have a helluva band. RIP Billy Powell, your with God now, as well as most all other members of the band. Rock heaven, like you did earth!!

Dave Friedman | 1/28/2009, 11:24 pm EST

Words can’t express how tragic this is for me. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music is so special. My first time witnessing the spectacle that was a live Skynyrd show was in ‘74 at the tender age of 14 and I was hooked from then on. Saw them 5 times with Ronnie & met him, Billy & Gary at one of those shows… in Atlanta. Such cool, approachable & down to earth people. No egos at all. Saw them 8 times with Johnny and Rossington Collins Band once in between so that’s a total of 14 times I saw this amazing man play the keys. So talented. So unique. There have been many players brought in to this band in place of those that have passed or left but I don’t see how they can continue now & it makes me so sad. Billy’s style, presence & grace literally just can’t be replaced. He was that good. As much as I’d love to see & hear more Skynyrd music & shows (if there is I’ll be there) I think this looks like the end of the long flight of a very proud & “free bird”. Truely a terrible loss to the music world but more importantly my heart goes out to his family, bandmates, friends & everyone else that knew & loved the man personally.
RIP Billy. You were one of a kind. Also RIP to Hughie, Leon, Allen, Cassie, Steve, Ronnie and as much as it pains me to say this….. probably RIP to Lynyrd Skynyrd as well.
The greatest american Rock & Roll band !! EVER !!

I was a student at Ga. Southern College in 1977 when Skynyrd played there one week before the crash. I was also one of the students asked to drive the band for 4 days. I got to meet all of the band and even took Billy to the local drug store. I truely have a storey to tell my grandchildren. Every time a band member has passed it feels as if I lost a brother. Rest in peace Billy.

I am offended (like another poster here) by Anonymous 9:15 for makin that KFC comment. Dare ya to say that in front of Skynyrd fans, you spineless piece of butt residue! You TRULY deserve a good ol’ fashion Southern ass-whoopin’! And may you receive it before February ‘09!!!!

Joe DeBacco | 1/29/2009, 8:27 am EST

I was so sadden to read about Billy Powell’s passing…very sad indeed! He was a terrific keyboard player and added great sound to Lynyrd Skynyrd. I saw the band once and only once in 1975 in upstate NY, on a bill with the Doobie Brothers…will never forget that confederate flag hanging behind them. I was in college in the early ’70’s in central Florida when I first heard Skynyrd’s “Second Helping”…was hooked ever since. May Billy rest in Peace amoung his fellow bandmates.

Mark Ambrose | 1/29/2009, 8:31 am EST

I just saw you for the very first time at Mohegan Sun (CT) on January 3rd. You had golden fingers and it was a pleasure to witness what a genuinely good time it looked like you were having, when seated at that piano. Rest in Peace, Brother!!!

wild1apache | 1/29/2009, 8:45 am EST

After I heard this terrible news yesterday morning, I just wanted to watch my recording of Skynyrd at CMT’s Summerfest, I think it is called from 2006. I was watching the show and then imagining all of those songs without the keyboards. Billy made such a huge contribution to the band as there is no better out there. Gary Rossington and Billy’s bandmates in Skynyrd, and Billy’s family- my heart cries for you today. God Bless Billy Powell.

Anonymous you are a complete waste of oxygen. First of all, go back to school and learn Grammar 101 before you try to make a post to insult someone, and secondly you couldn’t be anymore incorrect. Freebird is the 2nd most played song in radio history. Billy Powell not only created a piece of work known by tens of millions, he created one of the most recognized piano pieces in music history. What have you done with your life?
Billy Powell was a class act a wonderful pianist.

To Billy’s family I’d like to offer My sincerest condolences for what must be a truely heart wrenching loss. At the same time, I wish to thank you as well, for the absolute gift you shared with all of us. As my brother Randy said earlier, Lynyrd Skynyrd hooked us up pretty good at a fairly young age, and we all have stayed pretty true to the southern rock ethic ever since. We were just kids, but I can’t imagine any other keyboardist in history inspiring so much “air piano” from so many “too cool” kids in such a red neck, rural, small town setting as we grew up in. So inspirational it was, I attempted to take up piano a few years later, with visions of Billy-esque greatness dancing across my imagination. To this day, my old Skynyrd albums (and disks) still inspire a love for the keyboard in a way none of the other greats ever has. Forget rest and peace Billy…Rock em hard! If your new gig has a little different way of doing things, no doubt you’ll still find a way to change it up a notch!

“the greatest pianist to ever live.”

You’re actually saying there’s never been a better pianist in the entire history of the world? Wow!

You certainly don’t have to like Skynyrd’s music. After all they were just a bunch of poor white trash. Far to unsophisticated for the rock snobs who roll thier eyes when “Freebird” comes on the local classic rock station.

Just consider this, Eddie Van
Halen is a guitar legend and considered such an amazing talent (rightfully so, I might add). Yet you can walk into any music store in America and find some seventeen year old wannabee who can play his guitar riffs note for note. Now ask yourself, how many keyboardist anywhere on any level you’ve seen pound out a Billy Powell solo note for note. Brothers and sisters, there just ain’t many on this earth who can do it. We just lost arguably the best honky-tonk piano player of all time.
R.I.P. Billy.

I was fortunate to have seen the original band at mile high stadium in Denver back in June of 77 90,000 people were on their feet during Free Bird. mrmusic248 | 1/29/2009, 9:49 pm EST

In 1976 I was in attendance at one of the best three act shows I’ve ever witnessed.
1st, Skynyrd, 2nd, Peter Frampton, & 3rd, Santana.
During the course of this day, the guitar work was as blistering as the sunburn I received, the concert being held outdoors on a murderously hot & humid day in July on the campus of Eastern Michigan University.
Despite Ronnie VanZant’s disparaging remarks concerning the quality of the P.A. system, Skynyrd proved that three guitars were not too much for the crowd to handle.
They, of course, closed with “Free Bird”, performing same with amazing intensity and passion.
Now, Bill, Ron, Allen, Leon, Steve, and Cassie have been reunited for all eternity.
We thank the Creator for the gift of those people and the musical gifts they gave to us all.
All the fans send out their collective hearts to the giant extended family that is Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Long Live Lynyrd Skynyrd!!!!!!
Yours Truly, mrmusic248

Thank you Billy for all good tunes……fly high…

deano | 1/30/2009, 1:14 pm EST

This is indeed sad news — what a talent. Probably the only concert where the piano solo was considered enough of a highlight that the beer drinkers didn’t automatically head off to the concession stands. And that’s a compliment.

Anyway, I know the Skynyrd entertainment machine makes way too much money on the road for Rossington to consider putting it to rest, but now that he’s the last original member, it’s pretty much a traveling tribute band. So why give the Kiss guys flak for saying they might pass the makeup torch to a younger quartet?

Kate | 1/30/2009, 1:16 pm EST

Orchard Park Stadium/Buffalo, NY summer of ‘77. We still remember you.
As for the rude comments being made, ignore the ignorance. They are obviously rapp fans that have no idea what real music and real musicians are, yet rapp performers keep stealing the music from greats like Skynyrd. RIP Billy and say hello to the rest of the band from the fans. Fly on freebird!

Southern Outlaw | 1/30/2009, 5:18 pm EST

LS fans ignore the dis- respect stated by the idiots out there …they would not say those things to their face – Ronnie would give them a good ass – kicking. Hank W. would say ” we say grace and we say mam and if you not into that we don’t give a damn”. Charlie D would say” just leave this long hair country boy alone”. Billy was part of the true southern band that spoke our langauge – if they don’t like it spit some beechnut in their eye… again Billy thanks for representing us so well with great music and you had fun while doing it – a life well lived. You are in much better place …

Southern Outlaw | 1/30/2009, 5:27 pm EST

Forgot to mention , I saw LS, ZZ TOP and the Rolling Stones in Memphis in 1976 – both LS and ZZ out rocked the head lining Stones… – the British bands stole all their style/soul from the southern blacks and whites artist- which they admit.. Billy you are truly Free now…say hello to D. Allman

What a sad, sad thing to happen to a band that is no stranger to tragedy. Billy Powell dead at only 56, another Freebird gone much too soon. My heart and prayers are with Skynyrd and Billy’s family. His was a great talent and thankfully will be left to the world to remember him by. I can only imagine the reunion when he joined Ronnie, Steve, Dean, Cassie, Allen, and Leon. It must have been a very happy thing for them all to reunite in Heaven. Thank God for the gift of each of their lives and the music they left behind. R.I.P. Billy, another Freeebird who’s free at last. God Bless his soul and the many loved ones left behind.

Sorry to hear this news. Billy was once of the greats…….

Will in Tucson | 1/30/2009, 9:43 pm EST

I only got to see this band once, when they rolled by here in 2006. Billy Powell’s playing was a thrilling highlight of that show. What an incredible talent he had! I remember how he and bassist Ean Eads would simultaneously lean back and then tear into some more devastatingly awesome riffs during the solo parts of songs they did. Most of all, I remember that big radiant smile B.P. kept on his face the whole show, just shining out joy at getting another night to play in front of his nearest loyal fans. I’m glad he enjoyed his life. I’m sorry he’s gone. This hurts. My deepest respects to all his family and friends.

Gary | 1/30/2009, 10:00 pm EST

Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of my favorite bands, and Billy Powell was my favorite keyboard player. He inspired me to get started at keyboards while I was in my forties. I stopped for awhile, but I’m now removitated to start again.

Billy, thank you so much for the joy you’ve given me through your music.

dlt | 1/30/2009, 10:08 pm EST

Billy Powell is trim in that old black and white photo. Makes me think of Ron Asheton.

I saw Skynyrd w/ J Geils and Dickie Betts–Betts didn’t seem too happy that day–and Peter Frampton, who, unbeknowst to everyone, was already on his way down. Me, I enjoyed Frampton that early June Saturday in early 1977. I’ll bet Powell and the boys did too as Frampton did some covers, Junior Walker’s Shotgun, Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Skynard, if they were waiting backstage at the time, probably enjoyed J Geils. I was one of the freaks at the concert, imagining Iggy Pop on that stage. My feet in the slime, my delicate eardrums getting blown by the–the awful plane crash, three months away–original Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Madhatter | 1/31/2009, 10:40 am EST

Billy was part of the team that brought us so much joy through the years . He will never be forgotten . My heart goes out to his family . I think i speak for the rest of Lynyrd Skynyrd fans when i say ” If you can’t leave a respectful comment about this legend of a man , then don’t leave a comment at all.” We’re one step behind you Billy and we have your back . Love and miss you Brother.

ROLLTIDETOMMY | 2/1/2009, 2:13 am EST

All of Billy’s work was incredible and I’m pleased to see hundreds of references to “Free Bird”; however, if you want to hear Billy at his absolute pinnacle crank up “Call Me The Breeze”, especially while cruisin’ down the highway on a summer day with the top down! Billy was my favorite member of my favorite band. We’ll all miss BP, and I look forward to seeing who’s tickling the ivories in his stead when I next see Skynyrd (for the 8th time)! I don’t believe in Heaven or Hell, but as a devout Christian Billy certainly did. If I’m wrong and there is a Heaven, I’m pretty sure that Billy’s playing a solo for God at this very moment.

Enjojed seeing Billy Powell perform with the band in Boone NC recently. Great performance and a great band. The songs this band played tell a story about their lives and experiences, and what great storytellers and musicians they were! I am looking at my framed lp cover of Street Survivors as I write this. I will miss my friends but continue to enjoy and share their music .

When my son, Levi Krystosek, was 18 months-old, Billy Powell and the whole Lynyrd Skynyrd Band met him and signed a guitar for him. It was to help raise awareness, Levi has a rare form of debilitating dwarfism. The kind, generous act that Billy and the rest of the band showed Levi, gave me hope. It was only a few short months later that we found a doctor to help Levi. I was told by several doctors that Levi may not walk but because of that meeting with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Levi has been walking for 2 months with the help of a walker. Billy you helped us and I will forever be grateful. May God grant you peace. Know that I will think of you often and I will pray for your family and friends during this difficult time. Peace be with them too.

The Terminator franchise is what got me interested in the movies in the first place.
The first was a suspenseful cyberpunk thriller, and the second became my favorite movie of all time.
The third fell short of intelligence but still solid nonetheless, and the TV series was a good addition to the franchise.
Nearing the end of May, the fourth and latest film addition of the beloved sci-fi franchise will open, and viewers are in for a sheer summer spectacle.
