Lil Wayne Plots Rock Album “Rebirth,” First Single “Prom Queen” Leaks

Lil Wayne will reportedly release his next album, Rebirth, on April 7th. And as evidenced by the album’s first single “Prom Queen,” the album will feature Weezy’s “rebirth” as a rock & roll star. Lil Wayne’s publicist told MTV News that the new LP will indeed be a “rock album,” and that the record has nothing to do with the Tha Carter III: The Rebirth release Wayne was plotting in late 2008.

We knew Weezy had the desire to go rocker, from his collaboration with Kevin Rudolf on “Let It Rock” to Wayne’s guitar antics with Kid Rock at this year’s Country Music Awards to his six-string noodling during concerts, so this next step in the rapper’s artistic evolution seems strangely natural. Rebirth will be the rapper’s first official release since Tha Carter III sold more than a million copies in its debut week last year. With an album so potentially polarizing, however, it seems unlikely that Weezy will repeat the feat.

Now you’re probably saying to yourself, “There’s no way this is actually happening,” but Wayne’s new single “Prom Queen” leaked this weekend, so this must be reality. The song features Wayne and his Auto Tune singing over a bed of guitars instead of a standard rap beat. In a way, this LP seems like it’ll echo Kanye West’s genre-bending 808s & Heartbreak, with a renowned rapper “singing.” Unfortunately, on “Prom Queen” as least, what makes the song unique is also what almost ruins it, as the background rock music on the single sounds like Limp Bizkit effortlessly recorded it in 1996. Weezy is still scheduled to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony, so it’ll be interesting to find out if the rapper will bust out “A Milli” or a guitar.

There’s a difference between an artist experimenting with new sounds (Kanye) and an artist using a gimmick to try and sell albums (Lil’ Wayne).

He ain’t experimenting with shit other than autotune.

He don’t play an instrument (regardless of him pretending to play guitar), he can’t sing for shit so he uses autotune to cover that up, and he don’t produce.
So what exactly is Lil’ Wayne experimenting with here?

He ain’t doing a damn thing other than trying to build on the current wave of hipster shit going on and appeal to the white audience to sell more records.
Everything Wayne does is contrived and fake, from his clothing style to his so-called blood affiliation, to his “experimentation” with music.
He wasn’t on none of this tight pants wearing rock star shit before the hipster movement started.

He saw that shit catching on and decided to switch off to that before any of those artists could make a name for themselves in the mainstream.
Wayne gets no respect artistically or personally around here.

Just because you hang out with fall out boy doesn’t mean you
should make music like them..

Try mastering rap first.

I’m stoked about this album.

I was mad at 808’s & Heartbreak but it grew on me and now I’m not mad at Kanye for that. I think Wayne should have waited for his image to fade before he decided it should change. But if he want’s to be a rock star, let him try it out.

I’m a much bigger fan of rock than rap, and I bet Lil Wayne’s album will be a great mixture of the two genre’s.

People think Lil Wayne is incapable of making a successful rock album. Why is that? Either they think rock and rap do NOT go together or for some reason they dont like Lil Wayne. Well rock and rap have worked together and that goes WAY back to the 70’s. Don’t tell me they dont fir together cause they do. Like SOulja Boy, people hate him for no apparent reason. He is a real artist, he had established himself as a powerful artist pretty much creating his own unique style not seen now-a-days. I myself am a producer of Hip-Hop music. Lil Wayne is combining 2 very unique styles. People are just no longer able to see a real artist. Such as 50 Cent, I like his music but he doesn’t make his beats or write his own lyrics. Uhhh wow long comment but I disagree, Lil Wayne might use autotune but most artists who are hot do. Such as Kanye & T-Pain. Million copies or not, there is no way Kanye is to be compared with this. Kanye is a cross-genre artiste whose songs are proper pop songs in addition to rap/hip hop, and so everyone listens to what he has to offer, even a rock fan like me.

Rappers sell a million album or two all the time – but nobody remembers their ’songs’ six months later. It was easy for rappers to top the charts – heaven knows who bought those albums but they bought it in droves. And it was easy for them to come up with new material, since they don’t have to ’sing’ or ‘play’ any instrument, except their f-bomb button about 86 times. Worthless, disgusting.

Rock made it back into top ten only when digital downloads started counting. And I am so happy to see that finally rap/hip hop ‘tracks’ are not topping the charts for weeks on end.

If you want to prove Lil’ Wayne as “legit” then DO NOT buy his album, instead let it ride the roller coaster of capitalism into the ground. The man has enough money as is. If the CD burns out and sells for shit and he releases another rock album then you know where is mind is, but if he goes back to what sold albums then you know he is a tool. First off, to Wyane and his tremendous success, we as fans and listeners applaud you for your music and i personally appreciate this change because as a rapper myself, I am a huge fan of rock music and the rock culture. Lil Wayne has pushed and pushed himself to become a multi-platinum artist, and by experimenting with other genres would show him a new perspective on music and different ways to make new music for the listener (us), or maybe give a spark in another artists mind to experiment with different types of genres and also create new, better music. We as listeners rely on the entertainer to show us his or her style of music and there ways of entertainment. As an entertainer, Lil Wayne must create new music and keep us entertained by giving us a taste of his new materiel and his new ways of combining or experimenting with music. I think that’s how all artists should think. These negative opinions should be overlooked by the writers and should consider that no matter what, Lil wayne will always have money and always continue his career as an “experimental artist” as we should say. You don’t have to like Lil Wayne to appreciate his music. His success shows that the truth is obvious, our job is to look a little closer.

Public Enemy/Anthrax: Bring Tha Noise.

Ice T: Body Count, “Cop Killa”, funny shit really.

Vanilla Ice: If you missed it, you didn’t miss anything at all.

Ice Cube: He actually had Korn backing him in his video for “Fuck Dying” too. That one really topped the charts didn’t it?

Cypress Hill: “Rock Super Star” was good, but when they try to push the envelope further, it just sounded like B-Real was passing stool.

Korn even had Lil John, Snoop Dogg, David Banner, and Xzibit in their “Twisted Transister” video. We didn’t see that take home a grammy, did we?

His “rock career” will be short lived, and be mediocre at best. Then he will immedialtley go back to doing what he does best.

Selling albums doesn’t make you the best. And, if Wayne really wants to take a lesson from the rock-n-roll gods, Kurt said it best, “It’s better to burn out, than fade away.”
