Lars Ulrich Confirms He Appears in Guns n’ Roses’ “Better” Video, But Where Is It?

1/21/09, 9:15 am EST

It’s been more than a month since Axl Rose told fans that the music video for Chinese Democracy’s “Better” was a week away from debuting. In a message board interview, Guns n’ Roses associate Fernando Lebeis said Lars Ulrich was responsible for the hold-up because the Metallica drummer needed to sign a release. That was on December 30th. Today is January 21st (hell, it’s a new year!). So where’s the “Better” video? Don’t blame Lars, Ulrich says.

Asked whether he knew he was being blamed for “holding up” the video, Ulrich responded, “I have heard about this, yes. There was a couple of clips of me in the video and they asked if I would sign off on it. When it got to me, I signed off on the one clip… I don’t know where [the rumor] came from. I’d love to be in a Guns n’ Roses video. It’s my favorite song on the record — I think it’s a great song.” Added Lars before the band’s concert in Milwaukee, “I can’t wait for the video to come out. There’s a shot of me and Axl embracing backstage at some concert, and I signed off that, and hopefully it’ll make it in the final cut.”

We don’t how it could take so long to edit together the live footage that will eventually become the “Better” video, but knowing Axl he’s probably meticulously overlooking the project to ensure it has proper continuity or something. At least now we have confirmation from outside the Gn’R camp that a “Better” video does exist.

how will hv to wait to this video a year?

Axl needs original line-up | 1/21/2009, 12:11 pm EST

Axl absolutely ruined any chance of this album succeeding in today’s new age of iTunes and bankrupt labels. No promotion, no concert and no interviews. Axl fleeced Best Buy and his record label. And I love the fact that Axl rants on his own message board to fans and curses the fans that even bother to show up on his board. It’s almost unbelievable. Too bad his pockets were padded with so much money. It killed any artistic ability he had left. Axl needs to go back to his original mates and start fresh, that is if he even cares about making music anymore. Axl has surrounded himself with a few people that continually kiss his ass and tell him no wrong. This new Axl album sounds so over produced. Credit Axl and his ever changing line up of session musicians.
What a waste of 10-plus years.

Marc | 1/21/2009, 1:28 pm EST

The first problem is trusting Axl when he says “the video is about a week away”. His word doesn’t mean shit.
Second, it’s great that they are going to start promoting the album now. Two months after is came out!! You take 13 years to make an album and that fail to promote properly?? The funny thing is, Axl had the balls to blame everybody but himself for poor promotion. Have you noticed that even though he is the common denominator in everything, he never accepts any blame himself?

thedetoxg | 1/21/2009, 3:30 pm EST

well axl lost another great guitarist so ive heard with buckerthead.. he must be fucking impossible to get along with. but the album is amazing (hands down)

JP | 1/21/2009, 3:34 pm EST

I went to a Best Buy couple of days ago. It had ton of copies of “Chinese Democracy”, but no price tags. Even if you wanted to impulsively buy it, you didn’t know how much it was. It’s a shame that Axl ruined what was once a great rock band.

Additional point, I heard “Civil War” last night. That song was more potent and timely than anything off of “Chinese Democracy”.

Guns N’ Roses are dead. Long live Guns N’ Roses.

Dave | 1/21/2009, 7:44 pm EST

As much as I think Axl is a true icon of rock, his inability to do anything in a timely fashion is almost insufferable. No one is going to care about this video, anyway. I consider myself one of the few die-hard fans left, and I couldn’t care less about a video for “Better”. It’s too bad Axl won’t accept any blame for the sluggish sales of Chinese Democracy…I guess he thinks Best Buy was supposed to play the role of miracle worker and air TV ads 24/7.

Guns N’ Roses have a new album out?

Rocker | 1/22/2009, 3:21 am EST

The footage of Lars being in the video was soooo important that they had to put the video on hold, thats just funny as h*ll!!!

The Sponge | 1/22/2009, 3:34 am EST

People just don’t get it. Axl is an artist, not a careerist. He couldn’t care less about sales or promotion, he finished the album he wanted to make and as far as he’s concerned his job is done.

If Axl wanted to make a bucket load of cash, feed his ego and restore the credibility of the GNR “brand” all he has to do is make half a dozen phone calls. That would be the easy thing to do and every other money hungry wanker would do just that.

That’s why he deserves credit. He’s got the balls to do what he feels is right, not what everybody else wants. As far as the mainstream goes he is one of the few pure artists’ left.

Jarmo | 1/22/2009, 8:03 am EST

Axl Rose is a complete and utter fucking idiot, he couldnt organise a piss up in a brewery. He has sabotaged everything his bandmates worked towards for the last 10 years by sitting idle in his cave with pouted lips, sulking with his thumb up his ass, while his album is ridiculed from piller to post. He claims to have artistic integrity and yet he whored his album out to the highest bidder, and now blaims them for the fact they could barely even give it away and it plummeted of the chart in a matter of weeks.
He consistantly shits on his fans like he shits on his band and the few hapless folks left clinging to his Illusion are finally deserting him in droves.
That bald bag of wind with a doormatt stapled to his head couldnt sell out the Roxy anymore, never mind a full tour.
Well done Axhole, you done good pig, you done good.

bw | 1/22/2009, 8:25 am EST

I think Axl got what he needed out of this album ,out of debt. When the Best Buy deal is done in 3 or 4 months , your see a lot of promo.
for a reissued album with new art
work and tour dates.Axl said he
always thought Chinese Dem. was a
double album when he did the message board interviews last month.

AXL??? | 1/22/2009, 8:51 am EST

Axl,
You are over! Your career is a joke. You ruined one of the best bands ever (the original line-up of G N’R) and you are a joke and you treat your fans and everyone like crap!

Do a reunion tour just to prove to the world you are not a total moron!

bw | 1/22/2009, 10:03 am EST

I don’t know why every one thinks
that a reunion would bring back the magic they had back in the day.
Appetite for Destruction was a one
of a kind album that was released at the right time in music history.
All the fans should be thankful that axl and slash are still alive to make music for us to enjoy.

Bill | 1/22/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Man you people are really stupid. You even bother to know the real answers to what really went down or do you just like talking dumb and acting like you know something? You don’t like Axl, fine. But, Chinese Democracy is a masterpiece show how about showing some respect. Unreal. So called music fans all pissy because they aren’t used to seeing an artist who has refused to sell out unlike the bands that they thought were cool. Just try arguing about the music morons. I defy you to even try and argue that Chinese Democracy isn’t a masterpiece.

renato | 1/22/2009, 5:26 pm EST

If you look back you’ll realise Axl’s always been very aware what he wanted back in the days. Meaning leading the band, music and business all together. Very focused. He’s never been a sellout however always said he wanted to make money unlike others great bands didn’t ’cause they weren’t prepared to deal with that. That’s the point about GNR: they always did wtf they wanted and earned good money doing it. What’s the problem about that} That band worked their asses to be in the place they reached back then. Nowadays is difficult to see where this guy’s mind is at. He’s very reclusive and certainly this release is lacking promotion as he and the old guys used to do. Don’t know why…
About the new album: you have to feel it, take the time, play it again, very nice. And I still think Slash is awesome, can’t I}

Nick | 1/22/2009, 5:27 pm EST

Awesome…Can’t wait!! Wonder what the holdup is.

Jarrad | 1/23/2009, 4:05 am EST

Better’s a great song and hopefully the video raises more awareness that Chinese Democracy has some rockin’ tunes and quality songs.

JL | 1/23/2009, 11:25 am EST

Axl is the last real rock star. All of the others are predictable paint-by-numbers drones. F ‘em.

P.S. The record exceeded expectations.

GN'R's big video return | 4/16/2009, 8:04 pm EST

I cant wait for the vid. “Better” is a great song and a video for it can really bring GN’R back to the mainstraem. which is where they belong.

To everyone that doubts Axl... | 4/16/2009, 8:18 pm EST

Shut ur mouths! U people r obviously obsesed with Slash or have just never taken the time to acctually give Chinese Democracy a freakin’ try! Its a great album reguardless if Slash is on it or not.
