U2’s New Single “Get On Your Boots” Hits iTunes Early

After a 30-second leak of U2’s first No Line on the Horizon single “Get On Your Boots” emerged early this weekend, the band decided just to stream the whole track in its entirety on their Website. From the opening drums and fuzzed out riff, it’s clear the band went the “Vertigo” route for their comeback single.

The verses are similar to Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up,” with Bono singing, “You free me from the dark dream, Candy floss ice cream, All our kids are screaming, But the ghosts aren’t real” in a similar cadence to Costello’s This Year’s Model hit. On the chorus, Bono sings “You don’t know how beautiful you are” in a style that echoes How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb’s “City of Blinding Light,” which boasted a chorus of “Oh, you look so beautiful tonight.”

“Get On Your Boots” was supposed to become available digitally on February 15th, but lo and behold it’s for sale on iTunes right now. The physical release is still scheduled for February 16th, while No Line and all of its five formats are due out March 3rd. For Rolling Stone’s exclusive preview of the new U2 album, check out our track-by-track breakdown.

In other U2 news, it’s come to our attention that there’s a bit of an uproar over No Line’s pretty-awesome new cover art. A bunch of comments on our item last Friday about the new album image led us to this, the cover of Richard Chartier & Taylor Deupree’s specification.fifteen. Both covers feature similar oceanic photos from Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. Still, the likelihood U2 stole this image from the sound artists seems just as likely as Coldplay stealing “Viva La Vida” from Joe Satriani. Commenters also pointed us to Brothomstates’ 2001 album Caro, which features a similar horizon image complete with an equal signs.

I must say that I think the new single is very catchy, if in my opinion somewhat unexpected. Nevertheless, the album art has yet to inspire me. It definitely does demonstrate their message, and it is interesting, but I was hoping for something a little more bold. A video on Q says that they are trying to incorporate colour into their look. I would have hoped that this could have been seen in their album cover, also.

Oh, and the issue about the similar album covers? I don’t see it as an issue, but I can see why the other artists may be surprised.

Blah | 1/20/2009, 11:20 am EST

“Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” it’s not.

pt | 1/20/2009, 12:50 pm EST

how exactly is this a ‘comeback’ song?

Phil | 1/20/2009, 1:30 pm EST

As a huge U2 the new single is rather “Meh.” Then again, I thought same thing about “Vertigo” and ended up loving it :)

Alison | 1/20/2009, 1:39 pm EST

I’d like to know why Bono thought it was ok to sit down on the Lincoln Memorial. Not cool.

ws | 1/20/2009, 1:59 pm EST

Uh Alison have you ever been to the 4th of July fireworks? Thousands of ppl sitting, stretching out, doing whatever they want. Its not a big deal.

And I think its only a comeback if you either a) breakdown (Britney) or b) are obviously well past your prime (Rolling Stones). Anyway the song is alright. Not a classic.

mix it right | 1/20/2009, 3:54 pm EST

Sounds like its over blown out with the loudness problem like Metallica’s last album. Let’s hope they can bring back the dynamic range to this CD. What ever happened to QUALITY recordings?!?!

U@RULES | 1/20/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Ownage

Harry Peratesties | 1/20/2009, 4:53 pm EST

U2 has clearly lost what they had. This song is absolutely awful.

Joe | 1/20/2009, 5:09 pm EST

A good continued devleopment from “Vertigo” with a clear lineage to “Fast Cars”, the bonus track on their last album, whose line “All I want is a picture of you…” segues nicely into “You don’t know how beautiful you are.” A dirty rocker with heart, and a killer guitar and bass line. The message of the song seems to be “Let’s all get to work” but it’s done with a kiss and a wink. Another influence is “The Fly”. Solid B for the first single.

Tyler John Arnold | 1/20/2009, 5:54 pm EST

How is any part of this song remotely like ‘City of Blinding Lights?’ And how do professional music journalists manage to regularly get song titles wrong website?

Crappy McCrap | 1/20/2009, 5:57 pm EST

Wow. That song kind of sucks. Its like Vertigo without the true hook and melody.

Hope the other tracks on the album are better

Four Nick Eight | 1/20/2009, 6:50 pm EST

U2 brings a neat little throwaway single to their repertoire with this one. Not nearly taking themselves so seriously (which will probably be left to other tracks on the album), this song is equal parts rap, post-punk, glam, hard rock and Middle Eastern. The boys are still looking for it, still hungry, still got that swagger, and their search gets more and more interesting. The first time I heard it, I was struck by how little it sounded like U2, other than certain vocal parts. Great drum rhythm (the hand claps are a nice touch), and the guitar sound is awesome. Im sure the lack of a true chorus will offput some, but I like the song.

iLly | 1/20/2009, 6:52 pm EST

The song is totally awesome.

Sean | 1/20/2009, 6:52 pm EST

uhhhhhhhhh ha

not too good.

mpp | 1/20/2009, 6:58 pm EST

Vertigo is better, the singles alright though not a classic

craigo | 1/20/2009, 7:01 pm EST

As a huge U2 fan the single doesn’t do much for me. Surprised that they would release a weaker version of “Vertigo”. Lame bands follow up a hit with watered down version of the same song, not constantly evolving bands like U2. I’m sure the rest of the album is great and will not dissapoint, but I am a little worried.

Hebjam | 1/20/2009, 7:46 pm EST

I like it. Going back into Discotheque territory. A bit Costello, a bit Queen, and I hear a little Zappa?? That riff……sounds like Apostrophe. Overall it sounds like maybe they won’t try and have every song save the world. Let each one be the piece of a bigger whole… like the albums we all love from the 60’s/ 70’s.

rlbgator | 1/20/2009, 8:42 pm EST

Meh, verging on pleh.

Jaime M Prater | 1/20/2009, 8:44 pm EST

This song is the perfect example of U2 making music instead of making art. Clearly U2 is trying to mine new territory and so they have. They’re not turning any heads, and it’s already been done. I don’t want a regression, I want eviscerating and spiritual expression.

‘Get On Your Boots’ is a well made song, but it stops there.

U2 has lost their relevance and have traded musical integrity for the currency of cool. I’ve loved this band for their fight, their bite, and their visceral might.

What I’ve heard from them the past two albums have been well made adult contemporary rock, feel good music without conviction, without spirituality.

A for effort, M for mediocre. They’ve walked the long road only to end up in the middle.

J M Prater

Very Meh | 1/20/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Man, this is a bad song. It’s sad to see the band putting out crappy first singles like this time after time. Usually, the first single at least has a hummable hook. I tried to find something to like about this song, but couldn’t. Edge’s “hook” is weak, and Bono’s singing is really annoying.

I hadn’t heard about Bono sitting down on the Lincoln Memorial. Bad form.

The Falcon | 1/20/2009, 9:06 pm EST

This song rocks!!!

killtheindustry | 1/20/2009, 9:11 pm EST

Hey Bono… The ghost of Freddie Mercury called … he wants you to stop ripping off his vocal ideas. How do you get the rest of the band to go along with this weak crap? You guys musically …. are done. This is really what your leading off with? Terrible… it’s even making all those little African kids cry it’s so bad.

Jungleland2 | 1/20/2009, 9:42 pm EST

Not crazy about this one. Electrical Storm was their last great song. Sometimes You Can’t Make it on your own is decent, the rest of Atomic Bomb was kinda lackluster. Hope the new one has more to offer than this.

Jono | 1/20/2009, 9:49 pm EST

The song is terrible. I am so sad about this. Let’s wait for Depeche Mode’s new album which will be 1,000 times better than this.

dudeman | 1/20/2009, 10:19 pm EST

Horrible song…if this is the first single, I can’t imagine the rest of the album being any good.

DJ | 1/20/2009, 10:32 pm EST

“The new Depeche Mode album will be 1,000 times better.” Ummmmm…doubtful. The last 3 records DM have released have gotten gradually more and more bland since Alan wilder’s departure, with only one or two halfway decent songs each.Gotta agree with you about U2’s new track… sorta sucks.

Fred G. Sanford | 1/20/2009, 10:37 pm EST

Best song they’ve ever done? No. But this song’s groove and attitude are undeniable. I’m glad they picked this as the first single. The ghost of Vertigo is there, but they have shown that they don’t have to sweat blood on every single song they put out. There’s a lot to be said for just getting together and rockin out and they do that on this one. This song kicks hard and feels good.

Jelly Belly | 1/20/2009, 10:39 pm EST

Wow. This song rocks and DEFINITELY blows the doors off of Nickelback, Hinder, Taylor Swift, David Cook, etc etc etc. Thank God for U2.

JaimePrater2000@yahoo.com | 1/20/2009, 10:46 pm EST

The larger issue at work here is that, like many other artists who’ve accumulated a vast fortune, their inspiration comes from innovation and not connection. They can no longer connect to the world in the ways that they’ve used to.

ALL of their albums up until [and excluding]‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ connected because there was something greater at work, something spiritual, political, human, in the very fiber of their musical blood.

There was once only a small pond between U2 and their connection to their fans. Now, there’s an ocean, and with each album of late, the expanse is widening.

Perhaps they’re tired of the way in which they’ve communicated in the past and they wish to journey? Tally Ho I say, but realize that you’re loosing us, one by one.
I want to hear some blood in their music, some life beyond the masturbation of lyrics as lube and instrumentation as cock.

JaimePrater2000@yahoo.com | 1/20/2009, 11:00 pm EST

Last Comment….

What are U2 even about these days? What’s their connecting point?

BGRL | 1/20/2009, 11:02 pm EST

Well, i knew it wouldn’t be the greatest thing i’ve ever heard but I can definitely see myself singing along in the summer time. I won’t listen to it til then so i don’t end up hating it.

Jabe | 1/20/2009, 11:11 pm EST

Some earlier posters mentioned Depeche Mode…It’s interesting when you think about their similar situations. They both are pushing 30 year careers, and recently, they both have released relatively weak albums with just a couple of hits here and there.Neither U2 or DM have released a KILLER album in over 10 years. Could be that they’re both tapped dry of great material.

spee | 1/20/2009, 11:29 pm EST

This really sucks, I hate to say…It sounds as if they’re targeting the Jonas Brothers’ audience (they are actually…), and I respect the Jonas Brothers.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea as a b-side but it seems that when inspiration is absent, the easiest way to fill the gaps is by creating little “dirty” rockers like this. That’s not why I like U2 but anyway…Hope the album is better.

Joe | 1/20/2009, 11:40 pm EST

This just in: Metallica has come under fire from AC/DC for their “Black Album” and its similarity to “Back in Black”….Count Chocula is also pissed at Metallica for using a coffin on their cover of “Death Magnetic”

Spec.fifteen’s “musicians” actually try to state that they have more of an emotional connection to Sugimoto’s artwork than U2, calling U2’s use of Sugimoto simply a “phonecall and a check”. How the hell do they a)know U2’s thought process in using the material and b)lay claim to ownership over someone elses work? Direct your lame attempt at venom at the original artist, boys. It’s his photo, he sells it to whomever he wishes.

Yadayaya | 1/21/2009, 12:00 am EST

I needed to listen to the songs several times to not hate it – and i’m still not sure how I feel about it. At best, a 4 out of 10.

I wouldnt rate it as a total dud – just not the great singles I am used to. Maybe the album is better…most likely not, but hey you never know!

The Undertaker | 1/21/2009, 12:09 am EST

When i heard this on the radio – the intro was really rockin – I thought yes, U2 are back. Then the song continues and my opinion started going very downhill from there. The chorus is really lacking – it sounds like there is an owl hooting during the first “Sexy Boots” chorus. I really wanted to turn it off as the song was seriously pissing me off …. but I stuck with it and listened to the entire thing. I liked the “Let me in the sound” part towards the end, but that’s it.

In a nutshell, it was crap.

Rip Off | 1/21/2009, 12:15 am EST

Sounds like Wild Wild West

RNagy | 1/21/2009, 2:08 am EST

Sounds to me like the recent songs on the remixed Boy that didn’t make the original cut. What I mean is, sounds like a “secondary” song the band would normally not include on disk

Hope the rest of the album is better

The Street That Has A Name | 1/21/2009, 2:10 am EST

I’m a HUGE U2 fan. Massive. With that said… this song is not up to snuff. At all.

It’s a complete MESS. It doesn’t know if it wants to be Vertigo, Pump It Up, Queen, rock, funk, techno beat or…uhgggg.

Take all of the experimentation U2 has ever done over the years (to great results!) crash them in two trains going 500 miles an hour and this is what you get.

That song is not a single at all. It’s a B-Side at best.

KarenD | 1/21/2009, 2:26 am EST

This new single is heavily lifted from Costello’s ‘Pump It Up’. There’s also quite a bit of Escape Club’s ‘Wild Wild West’ and Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues.’ If imitation is the highest form of flattery, the aforementioned artists should be very proud.

Cjboog | 1/21/2009, 3:43 am EST

Love the new single! At first I was a little bit disappointed but now that I’ve heard it a couple a times, I actually think it kicks some pretty serious ass. It needs loud headphones so you can hear all that’s going on.

Vijay | 1/21/2009, 4:45 am EST

This is a great song. Well, at least a very good song. The last album was so focused on playing hard that everything was so tight and formulaic. This is very like Vertigo in vocal cadence but otherwise this is more of an Achtung Baby sort of moment, this song is the new sound ushering in the new era. I’m just so glad they are no longer resting on their laurels.

When I first listened to it, I thought it was dreadfully scatterbrained and pretty weak. To the detractors: Listen to it. Again and again, on your way to work or something. The riff binds the myriad sections together. The lyrics are compulsive and energetic.. and excited. And the chorus is underwhelming but catchy. Listen to the ‘You don’t know/You don’t get it do you/you don’t know/how beautiful you are’ part, that is where it really comes alive

Give it more of yourself. That which takes longer to love will stay with you longer.

Anonymous | 1/21/2009, 5:31 am EST

Gosh, if a bunch of internet douches named “dudeman” and such don’t like it, maybe I should.

Rik | 1/21/2009, 9:08 am EST

Complain ,complain, complain! Damn, at least U2 and DM are still putting out records! Now all we need to do is drag Dieter’s old ass off the golf course and get him in the studio for some new YELLO!

Fa Q | 1/21/2009, 9:49 am EST

I think the problem with some of the detractors of this song is that they were expecting U2 to save rock and roll. When “The Fly” came out off of Achtung Baby, there was a similar reaction from people, calling it a “mess” and saying it wasn’t sure what it wanted to be. That one turned out pretty good.

Boomtown | 1/21/2009, 11:10 am EST

What a wicked f’n groove. Great job guys.

Ronald McGroin | 1/21/2009, 11:22 am EST

This single sounds nothing like the rest of the album. I think its a good hook to get people interested what the rest of the album will be like. you won’t be disappointed. This single has a true “Discotheque” feel to it, with much more glam and dirt attached to it. The rest of the album is a huge departure for U2, with tons of soul and heart.

Eno | 1/21/2009, 12:23 pm EST

Uhm, folks it really is subjective now isn’t it? I like it. I’ts no Mercuryhat, Blinding Blues Stinging Bees., but I like it.

Andy Plus | 1/21/2009, 12:27 pm EST

This song makes me want to vomit.

I can’t see how a band capable of such greatness could produce such rubbish. There is nothing about the song that makes me want to ever listen to it a second time. The band created ‘Until The End Of The World’ and ‘Love Is Blidness’ et al. Surely they must know shit when they hear it?

The production is horrible, I hate all this close-miked over compressed crap. Bono’s voice is so dry and upfront when its clearly seen better days and could do with some reverb to mask this. The recording sounds just like a series of overdubs; there is no excitement of a band playing in a room to the track. How Eno and Lanois could be paid to make this so unremittingly crap is beyond me.

I may be ready to utterly disown the 2000’s U2.

Bill | 1/21/2009, 12:43 pm EST

Sitting on the Lincoln Memorial was merely a performance gesture meant to emphasize the emotional intent behind the lyric “Blessings are not just for the ones who kneel… luckily” — it’s of one being so overwhelmed by awe and gratitude that you literally have to sit down to absorb it — he wasn’t slumming it. Bono was, after all, looking out on MLK weekend across a sea of a million Americans who had been “rebooted” by the promise inherent in Obama’s election.

Bono has said that he is very cognizant of creating visual moments during performances and that’s all it was.

Walter | 1/21/2009, 1:07 pm EST

Andy Plus,

They won’t miss you. Rock on, U2. I like the song a lot.

Fen Phen Jenn | 1/21/2009, 1:10 pm EST

“there is no excitement of a band playing in a room to the track”

Sure sounds like the opposite is true

I get a distinct “Elevation-Vertigo-I Will Follow” vibe to this song, that it would sound just as good in a pub as an arena-rocker. Sorry you don’t like it, Andy. Taste is the enemy of art, right?

deano | 1/21/2009, 1:21 pm EST

What the heck was that? I’m not even sure what that horrid melody in the chorus is supposed to accomplish except to get me to turn off the radio. Gag. Bono recently was commenting on “Boy” and said something like “I miss my boyhood.” Boy, so do we.

Pamela vs. Bonamusica | 1/21/2009, 1:55 pm EST

When I heard this song in the radio for the first time I liked it from the beginning and in my opinion it´s not bad as a first single. It´s true that it continues the musical approach of “Vertigo” in some way. At the moment I can´t judge which of the two songs I like more, I just have to listen to “Get On Your Boots” for several times. But one thing I would say is that it sounds more complex and also more radical than “Vertigo”, it rocks without compromises and this is something I really like about it. I think it´s positive that U2 always try to develop into new directions and in their late 40s they are still eager to learn.

Grady | 1/21/2009, 1:57 pm EST

Some people will never like anything new U2 does. It’s not a fault. I particulary think this is a very giddy, dirty, sexy song. U2 could be like Nickelback and crank out the same album over and over again and they would probably be just as successful. I am glad they dont. I would rather listen to U2 mess up than most other bands “succeed”.

Crisco | 1/21/2009, 2:18 pm EST

I like the new song, but I liked Vertigo as well.

I was sooooo disappointed, however, with How to Dismantle….

I was hoping that the vibe/sound/feel of Vertigo would resonate through some of the other tracks, but boy was I in for a let down. The rest of the album…IMHO…was somewhat of a snoozer.

hillarydelivery | 1/21/2009, 2:31 pm EST

No one pays more attention to U2 more than those that “hate” them. Our Rhodes Scholar friend here has probably rewound and watched the U2 performance at the inauguration 20 times so far. I think its so cool that U2 inspires such passion from those that profess their hate for them so vociferously. AWESOME!!!!

jogger50xxl | 1/21/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Its misleading – there’s a lot going on in this new tune. I didn’t like it at first but if you play it loud it’s great. Clearly, they are shooting for something less structured than Vertigo and not a pop song like Beautiful Day. While this song may not be what everyone is expecting U2 do a good job with throwing people off a bit making anticipating the new album even more intense. Whether you like U2 or not nobody creates the interest they do so its good fo rthe music business especially other BANDS trying to make it.

niall | 1/21/2009, 6:38 pm EST

this is a brilliant song its the desire, the fly, elevation and vertigo of this album. listen to it a few times before you make up your mind. dont be giving u2 a hard time look at all the other bands that made there first album in 1980 or even 90 they imploded e.g bon jovi rem. u2 are doing what u2 do they done this after joshua tree and zoo albumthey reinvent themselves and always works out. i remember when fly was released everyone thought the album was going to be stit but turned out to be the album of the ninthies. i cant wait for whats going to be the album of the noughties and i spit on all of you who call yourselves u2 fans and then critize get on your boots. so what if its not vertigo would ye be happyier if it was and they only made the same sound all over again until there dried up like bon jovi and the stones. bring on the new album and to that fella called me a loser you need to take a step back and look at your own life you sad gimp you call us losers your the one that came on a website to talk about a band that you dont even like FUCK YOU

Buck | 1/21/2009, 8:15 pm EST

I think it’s modern art, Bono- has is inner Lennon going on (which he does well) I sense a guy letting loose and rockin- Edge is very on par- nice textures- there is emotion in that Les Paul. Adam has his groove (the center)keeping it simple but powerful, and Larry has some skills going, esp. with the high hat – very cool production. These are guys having fun in the garage! Let’s not be so serious… The fact that this song is in the middle of the album means it’s a wake-up for the next track- U2 is U2, we have certain memories of other albums why can’t we have new ones? I thought the band played with alot of heart and soul during the We are One show- Let’s all move forward!

Release the Kracken!!!! | 1/21/2009, 9:14 pm EST

After hearing it about 15 times I have to say that the only real weak link may be Bono’s free-association lyrics. His voice sounds as good as it ever has on this song (as also evidenced by effortlessly hitting the high notes on “Pride” during the Obama event) and this rhythm section groove is just plain nasty. Edge jumps in and out of the rhythm, and then glides alongside it, with much dexterity. So back to the lyrics….I remember how much flak he took for “Freedom has a scent like the top of a newborn baby’s head” on “Miracle Drug” and I get the feeling he’ll take that same kind of flak for “Satan loves a bomb scare”. But you know what? I always stick around to see what he says next. And the Middle Eastern flavor to the chorus sounds awesome. I dig this tune. Can’t wait for the album.

This generation’s Beatles. Brilliant…you know it is.

Anonymous | 1/22/2009, 1:07 am EST

Sometimes I’m AMAZED at what some of you people’s ears actualy hear. This song sounds noyhing like Vertigo or anything U2 has done since pushing the envelope with ACHTUNG, ZOOROPA, and the POP. Of course its not BOY, WAR, UF, or JT, nor is it a structured song with verse, chorus, big hook arrangements. What it is after eeoeated loud listens is better then any thing I’ve heard on the radio in a long, long time. And U2 never releases their best songs as first singles so this could be the final finger of the hand of classics in their canon(BOY, WAR, JT, AB & maybe NLOTH?) Lastly for all you people that don’t like U2 bexause of BONO and the fact that they are still the biggest band in the world you better close your ears and shut your eyes because they will be owning the world again for the next 2 years, and not in the way the STONES AND OTHER BANDS WAY PAST THEIR PRIME DO!

VITO | 1/22/2009, 1:18 am EST

By the way sorry it posted 3 times, something up with my computer. Lastly besides The Who which BONO inducted into the hof U2 has easily been the most influential band of the last 30 years. And if you don’t like them just don’t f’in listen to them, but coming on hear and trying to tell people who love still the biggest band in the world that they suck is just stupid!

carlos | 1/22/2009, 5:47 am EST

this is ROCK n ROLL !!! That will finally kick off coldplay!

ki ora | 1/22/2009, 5:59 am EST

If the magic is not there find it if not give it away just tour with the old stuff still orsome your music is still something i would take to the grave with me peace on earth havent heard the rest it get on your boots 4/10

Lets buy goyb on iTunes !!!!!!
Only 0,99€ for fresh music!!!!

Hebjam | 1/22/2009, 7:35 am EST

It gets better the more you listen. I’m having images of the statue of liberty putting on boots…..I think it’s about America, Bono saying ‘You don’t know how beautiful you are.’ This feels like rock’n'roll, not just ‘rock’.

Niko | 1/22/2009, 8:18 am EST

combine “vertigo” and “discoteque” and you get average “boots”. Not exactly what I expected from my favorite band after 5 years of work! Hope there is more to it that I just don’t get but I doubt it. Waiting to hear the rest of the album. I’m still exited about it since they have never let me down so far.

JaimePrater2000@yahoo.com | 1/22/2009, 9:05 am EST

I don’t like how people are demonized for not being real fans because they happen to not like a song by a group they’ve always loved.

I submit that Get On Your Boots is a worthy track, a solid track, but, not memorable and lost in its own complexities. I want to love everything U2 does, and what’s happening is they’re turning into adult contemporary rock.

Griff Simmons | 1/22/2009, 11:39 am EST

I’m trying to think of one “adult contemporary” artist that sounds like this. U2 is nice n dirty on this song. What a blast!!!

“You can look for answers, but that aint fun

Now get in the pit and try to love someone.”

Dan Nicolini | 1/22/2009, 1:13 pm EST

I like it. There’s a lot going on on this track. I hear the Queen influence as well. I love the fuzz bass, and the way the song takes several turns. It’s not a typical structure at all. What really amazes me is how many people can sum this up without really letting it sink in. People have to stop hating a band for trying to sound fresh or new. If they made the same song over and over again they’d catch flack for that too. What do you want from them? I for one, am looking forward to hearing more. They’ve been my favorite band for years and they haven’t lost me yet.

Jeff Gilooly | 1/22/2009, 1:49 pm EST

I love it when U2 releases songs that are FUN and a BREATH OF FRESH AIR and are DIFFERENT from what they’ve done before. Yes, there is a hint of Vertigo and a dollop of I Will Follow, with a splash of “Pump it Up”, but this is a song utterly devoid of any of Edge’s signature guitar sounds and it ROCKS. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the Middle East influence.

Mother Night | 1/22/2009, 1:54 pm EST

They sure did pack a lot into a fast-paced rocker, didn’t they? Well, it works. Special kudos to Bono’s lyrics for not blasting us in the face to do something, white flag in hand. This has an Achtung Baby feel all over it, updated for now.

Troutisdead | 1/22/2009, 2:02 pm EST

Not really sure what to think of this song. I mean is this what U2 feels they have to do to make music and stay relevant? I myself have never been a fan of U2. Their sound is just kinda average and lyrically they try to hard to be taken seriously. I appreciate their influence on modern music but this song is ugly, noisy, and would’ve fit the current music scene better about ten years ago. I don’t think it sounds like Vertigo other than the fact they are attempting to write a rocker. Also, I don’t know if it is just me but I feel that The Edge is doing his best NIN impression with the guitar part not only with the distortion he chose but with the whole sound of the song. Nine Inch Nails is a good band but as long as you don’t have a vocalist with Bono’s style. Overall if I had to rank this song with other U2 songs it would be in the middle of the pack which is where a grand majority of their music exists.
Four out of Ten

Steven Adler | 1/22/2009, 3:11 pm EST

The new single sounds a lot like “Surprise You’re Gay” by Def Karaoke Jam, but with kind of a darker Costell-like vocal.

Randy Johnson | 1/22/2009, 3:28 pm EST

“Paperback Writer” vibe. Great groove. Its funny how people want U2 to be more serious when they lighten up, and vice versa.

A | 1/22/2009, 3:45 pm EST

Rubbish. Trying too hard to be light weight. Let me in the sound was the only good bit. There production is all messed up since after pop. Always to polite. Whack on zooropa and see and hear a great albumn. This is more like hey mickey. Hey mickey your so fine but its not as good. Do U2 really want to be a 2nd rate Blondie ? The edge has gone off the boil. about 2 albumns ago.

Buzzkill | 1/22/2009, 3:47 pm EST

“Staying relevant” and “fitting the current music scene” are just buzzwords that make fans feel better. Thank heaven U2 doesn’t fit in any one bag or box. This song kicks ass.

A | 1/22/2009, 3:59 pm EST

In fact it makes me want to say…alot more….they just want to be POP/PUNK now. but they can’t do it. Try doing something mature guys….your getting on a bit…do something worthy of your selves..It annoys me now. You mock the devil and now all you are really is a bunch of ad slogans, you are the devil no doubt. Your not even Macphisto. Your the devil..the devil….the devil….lol….arrogance is crass…stop overproducing, over tweaking, over commercing….damn its crap…..you can sell…..Britney spears is so much better…..She do it every time….this is the work of the DEVIL…….

??????? | 1/22/2009, 4:02 pm EST

Blondie? “Hey Mickey”? I’m still wondering if people are hearing the same song I am. Oh well. I’m lovin it and I know plenty of others are too. Another nice touch was the guitar groove near the end over the Led Zeppelin drum part. Yeah, that’s “light”.

casual observer | 1/22/2009, 4:19 pm EST

Hey A, try decaf. Put Zooropa back on and chill.

A | 1/22/2009, 4:28 pm EST

?????????????????
Ambition has bitten the hand totally off. Hey Mickey your so fine, your so fine you blow my mind….
The stadium has bitten off more than it can chew. This is the work of a musically bullemic devil. Are you telling me this is really the sound of U2. Tell me the truth don’t give me love peace or else. This is the Joshua Tree polemic writ large. This is the crass with out the location of that albumn…Where is the sense of landscape or the personal….this is a 60,000 seater a man or men communicating with their living room…Where is the insecurity. Don’t get me wrong you can have an upbeat joyous albumn…I don’t hold U2 to the dark of some of their albumns, but they have truly let production over take them…they have truly let sales dwarf them….they have lost the courage to write their own albumns any more, and they don’t have the skill of someone like Springsteen to be an identity. They left it all behind a long time ago, and they aren’t digesting there food properly anymore.
Said woman take it slow, we’ll come together fine all we need is just a little patience.
It’s guys like you mickey…….

A | 1/22/2009, 4:33 pm EST

I can’t chill……Led Zep, as if this was Led zep….now Miami that was Led Zepped….
Okay it may just be the production letting them down….Eno abandoned Roxy music along time ago….get a producer who knows where your going….somebody put them in a room and treat them like young men if thats what they want to be. Somebody whip the edge into submission. Let Adam produce the next one…..in fact just release an acoustic albumn….do us all a favour… or an albumn of covers…..Let me produce the next one guys okay !!!! I will let you play, and cross off all the extraneous bridge sections, and rehashed chiming guitar parts….

Matt Jaeger | 1/22/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Play “Get Your Boots On” alongside “Wild, Wild West” by Escape Club. Rhythmically, melodically, and even lyrically similar.

Simple Math | 1/22/2009, 4:44 pm EST

U2 and Axl=controversy and passion from their fans

Boy oh boy | 1/22/2009, 4:45 pm EST

I have never seen a band generate as many factions from their fans as U2. This is a good song. end of story.

come on | 1/22/2009, 4:54 pm EST

to write a masterpiece all the time is impossible. Ive heard it a few times now, first time didnt think much of it, now im liking it more and more. I will wait for the album to make final decision. No doubt I will end up liking it as with all their albums, but to expect a joshua tree or Achtung baby is asking alot. Great great band, no doubt.

A little reminder | 1/22/2009, 4:54 pm EST

It’s one song. Whether you love it, hate it, or just don’t care, proper judgment should be formed when the album is released. As a stand-alone single it’s a pretty good song.

A | 1/22/2009, 5:19 pm EST

Okay this is ridiculous, one more post….The lyrics are okay man….the lyrics are okay…..they are … but…. they got lost in the sound

G Brady | 1/22/2009, 6:07 pm EST

“they got lost in the sound”

LET ME IN THE SOUND

Spellcheck Karma | 1/22/2009, 6:13 pm EST

After sticking with u2 from the get go consider this thought. ALWAYS reinveting yourself ends up working against you—REALLY! If I love VanGough’s paiting style why do I want him to change? I enjoy the VARIETY of subject matter that he does–IN HIS STYLE. If he starts paiting like Pollack–wtf? If I want a Pollack—I go to him for one. U2 have tried to be so origional on everything after Joshua Tree that eventually it has worked against them. Auchtung and Zooropa work—but then it all falls apart. They make comments like “we didn’t want to do any songs that sound like U2…” WTF??? If i want POP drivel–I’ll buy B. Spears!!! Rolling Stones followed a vein of chords and played wonderful vartions within their career. Bono listen—STOP REINVENTING U2—Try U2 sound with different subject matter. Sure, we will all, myself included, keep buying WHATEVER you put out. How about returning to what made you relevant??? Shit–POP–didn’t even make a good coaster (too slippery) Bono–i know there is still good in you—trust me on this—BACK TO THE BASICS!!!!

Steve | 1/22/2009, 7:02 pm EST

I listened to this new tune twice this morning, about six hours ago, and since then I’ve had that annoying Wild, Wild, West song stuck in my head. And the last time I had that tune stuck in my head must have been….When did that thing come out? The late eighties? Either way I’m getting close to cutting my skullcap off and giving my brain a good srubbing with a Brillo pad.

Anonymous | 1/22/2009, 9:01 pm EST

My first thought was…different. Oh, it’s U2. They’re always different. And they’re new stuff always seems to take a little time to grow on you. Some of it takes longer, and some of it grows better. But one thing’s for sure — they’ll never repeat themselves in an endless coda of the same ‘greatest hit’ replayed endlessly.

Listen to PUMP IT UP instead o’ this noise!

Marco Macri | 1/23/2009, 12:29 am EST

Let it be known off the bat that I’m a HUGE U@ fan, BUT this is what happens when Bono spends to much time with his charity work and saving human kind and doesnt spend enough time working on his music. not even Daniel lanois and Brian Eno can save U2 from mediocrity, and that is exactly what the new single “Get On Your Boots” is in reality. Seems Bono has trouble hitting those once powerful high notes due to not enough practice (cause of chairty work of coarse) Simply put this new single is the begining of the end for U2 cause what goes up really HIGH must come eventualy down…this single is the worst song they have ever written….it is mediocre at best.

Drewdog21 | 1/23/2009, 1:09 am EST

Sounds like something from the “Zooropa” era. Also, sounds like Larry Mullen, Jr. had a lot of fun with this song.

Pam | 1/23/2009, 9:48 am EST

In the meantime I´ve been listening to the new single for several times and I have to say that I really enjoy it. It´s an edgy and exciting piece of music, which proves that U2 still try to explore new musical possibilities. This is Rock´n´Roll full of raw power, hot blood and courage and Bono sings, as always, with full commitment.
U2 mea bona musica est.

Orosz Balázs | 1/23/2009, 10:00 am EST

Unfortunately U2 put up again, with a pretty average production. Bono’s vocal sounds promising at some points but the outcome, – inspite that worthy structures are given, and with a wholly different arrangement it could have been mesmerizing – the production is a typical, very much the same sounding extravaganza which will be released in 5 to 7 seven different ways to please every fan’s favour, to help cultivating the experience.

How precious is The Last Night On Earth now when only this kinda rockin’ out is the best they could come out for years now. Any track from the underrated Pop considered to this are undoubtly much more dignified and inspiring tunes not to mention Achtung Baby – filled with vigour and eagerness – which proved they ‘re capable.

But that means the very need of taking the barriers. Here they ain’t done that. Just stepped on the same familiar road where everyone else is wandering too without taking a risk. We can say they picked up where they finished with Vertigo (Rolling Stone). But judging by only this track, no matter if the prestigous long time collaborators, such as Brian Eno, Danny Lanois and Steve Lillywhite is sharing the process, it appears that it’s merely a waste of possibilities.

Reynolds Rap | 1/23/2009, 11:45 am EST

This is a faster version of “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” I love it when U2 glams it up like this; their Zooropa-Passengers period sounds like its getting a tuneup and it rocks

November 1991 | 1/23/2009, 2:22 pm EST

When U2 came out with “The Fly” from Achtung Baby, the band was excoriated for changing their sound. A bunch of Joshua Tree worshippers went nuts that Bono would run around in a leather suit with an attitude. If this website existed back then I am sure the comments would be similar on both sides. March 3rd!!!!

Simple Math Redux | 1/23/2009, 2:25 pm EST

Great Dance Track=Put on your boots indeed

Betty’s daughter has a copy of the new U2 song? what did she do, tape it to cassette? LOL

Elly | 1/23/2009, 7:16 pm EST

Love love love this song – it’s got groovy, catchy layers to it. The lyrics are not overworked but they emote definate imagery and substance. The guys are having fun and I for one am glad for that. Well done and good things to come for sure!

btw U2 thanks for all your efforts and passion.

Bretton | 1/23/2009, 11:33 pm EST

It’s not the greatest….it’s not the worst. Still – U2 generates a lot of interest no? Be it the cover, the song, the anticipation, the rekindled love and hate and inquiry and speculation and postulation.

The bottom line is that no one can argue that this band has been a driving force in the music industry for 30 years. If you hit the ’start button’ of Rock and Roll in say – 1950 (yes…critize me for earlier manifestations or influences)….but from 1950 onward….U2 represent a presence of nearly 50% of that history. Remarkable. I’ve listened, I’ve thought about the songs…the lyrics….seen Bono’s outward charity seeking….I’ve seen them live many times. The bottom line is that the haters will hate…and the lovers will love. Why there is so much time spent on hating – I don’t get it….as one can tune out things like music quite easily in fact. Instead – why not celebrate the fact that people find enjoyment from it….that in their own way – they are moved, made happy….carried on… Instead – people of little minds will dissect a 3-1/2 minute song to the second…declaring victory for some proof of their mindset….is that what it is?

Whether you enjoy jazz, rock, classical, pop….whether your iTunes are filled with U2, Britney, Tony Bennet, Handel or Duran Duran – why not celebrate music and life rather than be so focused on criticism? Why not celebrate that this creative entity known as U2 continues on. Who knows how the new album will be? We’ll find out when we hear it…..but why crash the car over one song?

I think the song has similarities to their recent past….and some similarities to music’s past (elvis costello, a few 80’s tunes)….but what are we now but a conglomoration of our recent history? In this information age…what are we but a big stew anyway? Music is nearly dead mathematically…. the possibilities have been explored…and unless you prefer complete discordance – then you are probably going to have to face the facts that human interest, comfort and desire appeals to certain sonic landscapes…. And I think we are approaching a point of repetition….but one that we can see as re-envisioning instead….to create more of a palette than a color…. can you see it? can you hear it now?

GET ON YOUR BOOTS

Get them on.

The waters are deep – the march is long.

Pam | 1/24/2009, 2:35 am EST

In the end both lovers and haters can only try to…
COEXIST.

Kashmir | 1/24/2009, 6:42 am EST

I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t like this song. It’s catchy, fresh, and current. It leaves me wanting to hear more of the album, which for me is very reassuring. I’ll be honest, I got really worried as U2 started to pust the release date back, and when I heard the release date for the single, I got worried. I don’t want to see them fail (like with “Pop”), and their great single is proof that only good is to come. I think the reason I get so worried is because they’ve been my favorite band for a while, and I don’t want to see them crash and burn. When I got into Guns n’ Roses, I was 13 (that wasn’t too long ago). “Chinese Democracy” came out, and I was there, at Best Buy at 9 AM in the morning to buy it. I listened to it and liked only 3 songs off the album. It made me really sasd because here was a band that I loved who had just crashed and burned (Axl may be a maniac, but I still have respect for him). Their tracks were overworked and too industrial. So you can imagine my fear when Bono stated “We’re reaching out to a younger audience this time!” and when magazines had summaries of tracks, they talked about hip-hop beats and other stuff. The single was a sort of reasurance for me. Thanks again, U2.

Zoltan from Budapest | 1/24/2009, 8:28 am EST

I’m a U2 fun since the Joshua Tree album but I think this song is a bit boring. This would not be my favourite U2 song.

I guess the dude who cant spell, cant read either. Nowhere did that other poster say that U2 was 50% of rock. He said that U2 has been around (a “presence”) for 50% of the rock era (2010 – 1950 = 60 years, U2 has been around for 30 years). And your post about the “senior center” was just plain stupid. Oh well. Rock will continue to rock and U2 rocks.

Ted | 1/24/2009, 4:35 pm EST

As someone who has been listening to U2 since 1983, I’m excited to hear new stuff from the band. And it’s important to keep in mind that U2 almost always saves there best singles for later release dates! So as for “Boots,”…like it or dislike it…the best is yet to come! 2009 will be U2’s year!!

wow!!! now THAT was a rollercoaster ride. They sure dont SOUND like they’re in their late 40’s. This whole vibe reminds me of Achtung baby/ZOO TV when U2 spread their message with a smirk and a sly smile; It’s a great juxtaposition of a rollickin tune with a semi-serious message. I could TOTALLY picture the Fly singing this song.

Sound like Queen Hot Space Album. Bono is trying to imitate Freddie Mercury vocals… and the basslines have the John Deacon trademark sound. (Example: Queen’s Body Language song)

Danz Bootz | 1/25/2009, 4:41 pm EST

Holy hell! Almost a perfect single, the only issue I have is the hooting sounds after “Get on your boots”….Contradiction is the place to be, and U2 squarely occupy the center of it in this song. A lighthearted and throwaway tune with a monster riff, lyrics that are serious and nonsensical, empty and meaningful at the same time. Bono comes with stealth underwater in his submarine while others live up top, shouting their slogans, gasoline in hand; he also throws out “women are the future, hold the big revelations” as if to say, didn’t you know that already? Remember “Even Better than the Real Thing?” Bono had much less to say on that song but damn if it didnt sound great. Get on your boots. We can dance and work hard at the same time. Just another lovely contradiction in a wild song that’s full of ‘em. 9 out of 10.

When I need to know if rhythm sections are good or bad, Henry Rollins is the first person I go to.

Hey James Hetfield | 1/26/2009, 1:10 am EST

Lemmy Kilmeister called. Stop ripping off his vocal ideas.

I would consider this song “good” if it wasn’t a U2 song. For U2 being the greatest band around for the past 25 years it’s just O.K. The expectations were much higher especially after reading comments that this album contains their best work yet. In my humble opinion “Achtung baby” and “the unforgettable fire” were their two breakthrough albums. Nevertheless I do consider “the Joshua tree” and “Atomic bomb” masterpieces. Don’t know about the album yet but “Boots” is not “Bad”, “Promenade”, “In gods country”, “One tree hill”, “Zoo station”, “Until the end of the world”, “Miracle drug”, “Original of the species” etc. Almost every album they released has a song that doesn’t really do it for me. Hope this is the one from “No line on the horizon”.

"Woman" mentioned in SONG | 1/26/2009, 9:25 am EST

That’s me. I have to hand it to Bono for tipping his hat to me on this one. I wish it would have been a better song though. My son came and got me to show it to me online. Nevertheless, the “woman” (not the sexy boots woman) but the generic woman who is the future and grants revelations…

I’m suing U2 for copyright infringement. Chartier and D-bag got nothin’ on me.

the real issue | 1/26/2009, 12:29 pm EST

too many of their most rabid fans want them to save the world with every song. too many of their detractors dissect every aspect of this song and look for reasons for them to fail. to me, it just sounds like they are having fun. too many people in rock and roll take themselves way too seriously (radiohead, Coldplay, etc etc) U2 has done that too. Turn it up loud, captain. I blast it in my car and its quite a rush.

You have got be kidding me

“Bloody hell I’m getting a headache

Capitalist bullshit that you

Sunday Bloody sunday
Live and let live
It Takes a second to say goodbye”

Bono-”Hey Edge, after working on this one song for the past 14 months,do you think our slick production techniques are calculated enough to capture that elusive 18 to 35 demographic?”.Edge-”I don`t know about that, but it`s VERY safe to say we automatically won another 5 Grammys,Let`s party dude!”.

Edge: Hey Bono, I have a great idea for a live version of “Get On Your Boots”! You have to listen to this!
Bono: No, Edge, it´s so late, I wanna read the RS now!

(about 10 minutes later)
E: God,…..so many negative comments…
B: Don´t worry, this is the same every time. Just remember November ´91. I´ve observed this for a while.
E: Wow, you always have so much time, mate!.
B: What I wanted to say is: If we make music that is about the primary colors of Rock´n´Roll…you know…some fans recommend us to dismantle a wheelchair. And if we try something really new and radical the others don´t like our production…that´s just the way it is…better bring me a Guinness, Edge…
