Scott Weiland Seeks Sweaty Redemption Onstage as Solo Tour Rolls Into Austin

“I ain’t no sinner,” Scott Weiland announced before he and the three guitarists and drummer comprising his five-piece band launched into a fevered rendition of “Interstate Love Song,” the alternative-rock classic by Stone Temple Pilots, one of a handful of bands Weiland experienced problems with, presumably due to his well-chronicled, heroin-related sins.

Weiland at least gave the appearance of a redeemed rocker Friday at La Zona Rosa in Austin. It was the second stop on a tour in support of his second solo album, Happy in Galoshes, which arrives a decade after its predecessor, 12 Bar Blues. Weiland looked svelte in a dapper three-piece suit. He danced his own frenetic version of the twist, with the stamina of a long-distance runner. His only onstage vice was the occasional cigarette.

(Check out exclusive, intimate photos of Weiland backstage and onstage here.)

The thirtysomething males in the audience went as ballistic during “Interstate” as they did during fellow STP heavies “Vaseline” and “Unglued,” raising their devil-horn hands high above their heads. In between said golden oldies, Weiland tried out the new stuff, albeit to lukewarm reception. That might have had less to do with the quality and presentation of the songs — “Paralysis,” in particular, with its foot-stomping refrain, “call my name, shout my name,” playing out against a backdrop of an EKG graphic and female silhouettes common to the mudflaps of 18-wheelers, was especially exhilarating — as it did with the scattershot nature of the songs. One minute there was a Latin lounge vibe, as on “Killing Me Sweetly”; the next there was an industrial tone with electronic accents, as on “Big Black Monster.”

But while Weiland’s repertoire was erratic, his faith in the absolution of his sins remained steadfast when, tiny bubbles floating about the stage during encore lead-off “Beautiful Day,” he reiterated his newfound disposition: “Doing well/Feeling fine/Modulate/Higher mind.”

Set List:

“Reel Around the Fountain”
“Killing Me Sweetly”
“Vasoline”
“Paralysis”
“Mockingbird Girl”
“Atlanta”
“Big Black Monster”
“Unglued”
“Blind Confusion”
“Interstate Love Song”
(Space Jam)
“Barbarella”
Encore:
“Beautiful Day”
“Missing Cleveland”

Awesome.. The Bret Michaels of Grunge resurfaces. Have a nice trip to the casino circuit.

SchreckenGost | 1/20/2009, 9:29 pm EST

Say what you want, the guys a living rock legend and that’s reason enough to see him before he inevitably dies young.

JL1K | 1/20/2009, 9:41 pm EST

Atlanta show was shockingly good. I had low expectations, but I was so happy I went.

RayRay | 1/21/2009, 7:57 am EST

i love the guy, but he is so erratic lately…you never know what you are gonna get. he is a pleasure to watch perfom when he is on his game

I have always loved Scott’s voice and writing, but after a too-short STP show (for no announced reason) on their last pre-breakup tour, I won’t spend $ on a ticket for any act that he’s with.

Stevo | 1/21/2009, 8:48 pm EST

This guy lost me as a fan long ago. All his rock star posturing makes me sick. What a waste of talent.

STP was notorious for playing the same setlist at show after show. I got ripped off seeing them a couple of times in 2000 and it was the same set with his same usual jokes thrown in that he’d been using since 93.

I was at the Austin show, which was friggin sweet, and met Weiland afterwards at the bar. He was somewhat lucid and approachable. One of the last of a dying breed. Enjoy it while you can.

I was at the Austin show & loved every minute of it. Face it, everyone’s job gets repetitive, & this is his job you know. He looked happy to me; was smiling quite a bit. I’m just amazed at the stamina it takes to do this tour right after having toured with STP.

Haters! its like in school when the jocks picked on the kids that they felt threatened by…
Weiland is a true rock star …posturing!!??? its what rock stars do…Plant, Jagger, Townsend, Vedder…………………… ………….

Scott’s a talented singer and songwriter. He is Human and has shortcomings like all of us.Maybe he is working to correct them, maybe not.Who the hell am I to judge.Hope he heals his stuff. Can’t wait to see him in Philadelphia.

I sold back 12 Bar Blues but after listening to Happy In Galoshes and really enjoying it I’m thinking of buying 12 Bar Blues again. Maybe I was a little hasty.

I also want to say that guitarist Bob Grean is a great collaborator for Weiland. I hear they met in rehab. If that’s true their drug problems are a blessing in disguise.

Alright let’s be real. Is Weiland’s appeal not built around his junkie label? Half the excitement is seeing how erratic he will be onstage! That IS Scott Weiland. I would rather see a trashed Scott Weiland acting like a crazy rock star than a pretending to be all clean and sober like a bunch of other wash ups from his generation.

Anonymous | 1/24/2009, 5:33 am EST

Oh and I’ve seen him three times in three obviously different state of minds. Wasn’t disappointed once.

rob c | 1/24/2009, 5:14 pm EST

hey guys don’t forget about the music.

I just got back from the Scott Weiland show at Starland Ballroom. The band was tight, and Scott looked healthy and sounded great. Big difference from the thoroughly disappointing STP show in Holmdel this past summer.

Starland | 1/25/2009, 12:48 pm EST

Band was NOT tight. Not sure what to make of this show. STP renditions were very good but really broke the mellow almost jam bandish vibe that his solo music offers. Definitely check him out if you are a Weiland fan but don’t go wnting to see STP material.

S&S | 1/25/2009, 2:08 pm EST

I saw him Friday night and he is a true rockstar. Put on a fantastic performance. I am a forever fan of Scott Weiland.

Scott weiland is a true rockstar,a great singer, songwriter,n performer

I saw The Scott Weiland Band (SWB) at 3 different venues this weekend. TLA in Philly, Starland Ballroom in Sayreville and Paradise Rock Club. I thought they were all great shows with Starland Ballroom being the best. I also saw them 3 times last month. Showcase Theater in Boston, The Fillmore in NY and The Music Box in Atlantic City. I thought they were all good shows. You can’t make everyone “Happy”. When everyone is perfect, then they have the right to dis Scott. You put yourself in his shoes … see how easy it isn’t. Remember… if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. True words spoken from the mouth of Bambi’s mommy.

sbennett | 1/26/2009, 6:01 pm EST

The Starland show on Saturday nite was awesome. Anyone posting on this board who has seen him within the past year would have to be def and blind to not see a huge difference in the guy. His voice was right on perfect, the band was tight and most important Scott was enjoying every minute that he was on that stage. There’s no way you could have missed that!! Keep up the GREAT WORK Scott!! We love you!!!

Brian | 1/28/2009, 5:26 pm EST

This guy is the rock-star America deserves: talented, erratic, and kind of a jerk-off.

It’s unfortunate that the music he’s making now completely doesn’t vibe with what he got famous for. I almost wish he’d tour under an alias so we wouldn’t have these poor fellows stomping around at his shows looking disappointed, waiting for “Down” to come on so they can act like they’re 20 again.

stephen | 1/28/2009, 10:08 pm EST

Anyone know if he has performed blister on my soul,or the man I didn’t know at any shows, those are the 2 highlights of HAPPY

Scott Supporter | 1/30/2009, 9:03 am EST

I saw Scott at the TLA last Friday night & the performace was brilliant. His voice, the band & the music were all in harmony. I have seen Scott through the years with STP,VR & solo and he NEVER disappointed! I think the people who are bad mouthing are jealous b/c they do not know anything about music. Scott’s writing is outstanding. Shut up & Listen! Scott, Keep up the good work. Philly loves you!

Your Mom | 2/9/2009, 12:08 pm EST

MFingNinga – were YOU on drugs that night?

Scott Weiland is Jesus Christ!!!
