Joaquin Phoenix Makes Official Rap Debut in Vegas, Falls Off Stage

1/20/09, 1:57 pm EST

Last week we reported that Joaquin Phoenix was making his move from actor to rapper official with a performance at a Las Vegas club. Well, as we can all see in the video above, the performance was nothing short of a train wreck as Phoenix struggled to even string together sentences in his official debut. To cap an already disastrous affair, Phoenix proceeded to fall off the stage as soon as his one-song set wrapped. The whole ordeal is being filmed for an upcoming and inevitably hilarious documentary. Stranger still, Diddy will reportedly produce Phoenix’s rap debut.

We’re assuming that this has to be a big joke. Actor Casey Affleck, who is directing the doc, is also the onetime movie star’s brother-in-law. We don’t want to start analyzing the whole family situation, but if a relative of ours was quitting an acclaimed acting career to appear shitfaced and disheveled while garbling and rhyming in public, we’d probably intervene rather than enable, but that’s just us. As for Phoenix’s fall from the stage, which also doubles as a fall from grace, check the video below the jump.

The fall comes around the 32-second mark, right as the MC orders everyone to “say ho!”

Why isn’t someone intervening?

This just in: Definitive Proof that MC’ing is Waaaay Harder than Acting.

This has to be hoax. He looks like a grunged out Jim Morrison (towards the end of is career) and he wants to enter the world of rap? Please let this be a hoax. Otherwise, we will be look at his career the way we look at Nicholas Cages… The first phase amazing – The second phase wincing with pain remembering the first phase.

I hope that this is a hoax as well. He is such a gifted actor as was his brother River. If this isn’t a hoax and he’s exploring an art form, more power to him…that’s a good thing..why not…but if there are addiction or other issues at work, I pray that people who love him are surrounding him and have his best interests at heart.

CECILIA | 1/20/2009, 9:07 pm EST

I LUV JOAQUIN PHOENIX AS AN ACTOR AND THINK ITS FUNNY HE WANTS TO RAP. CANT WAIT TO HEAR HIS MUSIC.

Dan | 1/20/2009, 10:56 pm EST

HAHAHAHAHAHA…wow…This is bad.I saw him doing an interview a month or so ago talking about how he did’nt want to act anymore which is his choice, but he was so fucked up on something. Now it looks like he’s gained 50 pounds since the Johnny Cash flick. It would ok if this was just some goofy bit,but if it’s not…well, we might be watching River all over again.

Spin | 1/20/2009, 11:03 pm EST

It’s not a hoax (sadly). When I heard that he was quiting acting to do music, i thought thats cool. I thought he would make a good rockstar. This is not what I was expecting. I like the guy but I hope his agents are working hard to recover his career!

Frank | 1/20/2009, 11:19 pm EST

This is some kind of Andy Kauffman shit he’s doing.

nicole_d_keewatin | 1/20/2009, 11:30 pm EST

He can go back to films, I know that, but it’s scary seeing him do stuff like this , is he trying to make hype about himself ,for him, if he comes back to Hollywood, and he gets to be “a poster guy for new found stability again, with an interesting story in the lime light” or is he really sick, like this, because any craft needs attention, I watched “Walk the line”, and to me personally if he took off with an album right after that and just did it in country, he would have made millions upon millions of dollars, I’m very serious because of the way he came off, just spinning from what he did, in fact he would have been producing himself by now! He was real gold but I can’t stop to think of sad stories like of, for example a 1980’s model named GIA and it’s none of any ones concern what a person life is, or that, we could know ,who they are at all, because I see dot’s and lines and that is the matter of observation for anyone looking at entertainment, in splendour or other paints in emotions, take it or leave it, I thought he was always a nice actor. From Nicole in Calgary,

shiv sham | 1/21/2009, 9:46 am EST

truly sad. truly.

Swingline | 1/21/2009, 9:51 am EST

If you were an award-winning actor and had basically “been there, done that” in nearly every aspect of the film spectrum, who’s to say you wouldn’t end up in the “I wanna be an MC” phase of your life?
Beard and shaggy look aside, I’d still take that over any of the other ridiculous crossover attempts that other actors (Don Johnson, The Hoff, etc.)have unblessed the music scene with.

Oh Beer | 1/21/2009, 11:33 am EST

Don’t forget the Bruce Willis Bruno Days…

that guy | 1/21/2009, 11:56 am EST

wow…. just wow…

cengle | 1/21/2009, 11:57 am EST

This is too familiar … remember when Scary Movie 3 spoofed Signs and 8 Mile? Joaquin’s character from Signs wanted to leave the farm and become a hip-hop rapper? Am I the only one that finds this eerie?

Anonymous Coward | 1/21/2009, 12:34 pm EST

This makes no sense. This guy makes really good movies. There is some kind of stunt to this. Two movies in memory that stick out:
- Gladiator
- We Own The Night

Its like an Entourage episode or something; only he’s combined both characters of Johnny Drama and Vincent Chase.

Somebody make this dude drink soem act right juice.

Anonymous Coward | 1/21/2009, 12:36 pm EST

Oh yeah – Walk The Line. That made me a Johnny Cash fan. Coem back to us Joaquin; you are one of the good actors out there.

Mame | 1/21/2009, 5:26 pm EST

This is your brain on drugs

Anonymous | 1/21/2009, 10:35 pm EST

He was my “actor crush” now I wouldn’t want to admit that. I hope this is a joke. He is a good actor, what a shame!

gareth | 1/22/2009, 12:34 am EST

i think he will succeed. as with his acting, he will work on his music and produce a quality record.

method actor | 1/22/2009, 7:33 am EST

havent you heard of living your character

Sue | 1/22/2009, 7:58 am EST

He should change careers more quietly..develop his rapping skills before people see him like this. What’s interesting is that he always has some woman standing by him…his latest is Christy Bella Joiner. He’s a spoile man sho is use to having people jump when he wants something.

CRG | 1/22/2009, 1:29 pm EST

I Love it!!!! He considers himself an artist as opposed to an actor. That is what makes him so great!!

Anonymous | 1/22/2009, 2:11 pm EST

Well, he was my celebrity crush too .. he’s an excellent actor, but he had to be on something while he was on stage .. c’mon, his words were slurred, and he fell off of the stage! .. but look at his background .. he grew up in a weird commune with hippie parents, and his brother (River) died of a drug overdose back in the 90’s … he NEVER watches his own movies, and once claimed in an interview that there were frogs in his hair … as hot and talented as he was .. the man is clearly unstable!

beanicboy | 1/22/2009, 2:15 pm EST

Either he’s up to something we don’t understand yet, or this is really embarrasing to watch. He’s the worst white guy rapper I’ve ever seen. It reminds me of Warren Beatty in Bullworth, except even THAT was better than this, and oh yeah, that was just a movie.

Anonymous | 1/22/2009, 2:53 pm EST

why can’t actors just act and rappers just rap? nothing good ever comes of the crossover… except for maybe Vincent Gallo’s Prince Vince. that was quality.

qween756 | 1/22/2009, 4:28 pm EST

I only hope this catches on… I anticipate a great trip-hop album from Nick Nolte.

maggie | 1/23/2009, 1:06 am EST

Why cant he do both. I can understand wanting to express their true self in music. But this guy has a gift for acting that noone of this generation have. It would be a great loss.

maggie | 1/23/2009, 1:06 am EST

People...this is a hoax | 1/23/2009, 3:58 pm EST

This is obviously a hoax, Joaquin/Casey are laughing their asses off at all the press/attention this is getting.

LonelyGirl15 anyone?

Rapsux | 1/26/2009, 2:14 pm EST

I hope he’s trying to kill rap and hip-hop. It’s about time it died. Freaking disco gone more wrong than it already is. Bring back “actual” music, not some over-sampled, over-produced garbage. I’m so sick of all the pop music too. American Idol… all that. Time for it to go. Down with big music! Down with vocalists who can’t play instruments! Down with $150 a ticket! Yeah, so hey, why shouldn’t Joaquin rap? He’s no worse than any of the other talentless idiots getting paid to make irritating noise.

john | 1/27/2009, 2:03 pm EST

It might not be too bad for him to reach a bottom with his music at this point, and who knows he might bounce back… William Shatner did. As far as crossovers between rap and acting two actors come to mind… Will Smith and Mark Walberg, of course they started with rap and then went into acting.

lú melendez | 1/27/2009, 7:41 pm EST

uuuh!joaquin mui caliente,mui lindo,mui formoso,mui sexy.Isso que chamo de homem víril,um macho de verdade.Delicioso,gostoso e com essa barba então..aff…alguém mi segure.GOSTOSO BRASIL

lmvalle | 1/27/2009, 8:06 pm EST

He’s gotta be the new Weird Al. Wait… Weird Al can actually rap. So he just sux. Eminem, where are you?

meditex | 2/16/2009, 2:58 pm EST

HMMMM…. do not know what to think about this. The Letterman show w/ Joaquin was pretty funny but…… Back in 2005 I worked with Joaquin as a volunteer @ the Astrodome in Houston for a couple of days after Hurricane Katrina and he seemed pretty normal then and was a great help. Funny thing was I almost ran over him with a golf cart the first night. I seriously hope this is a joke and NOT a cry for help.

lú melendez | 2/18/2009, 3:59 pm EST
