YouTube Hits The Mute Button as Royalty Fight With Warner Bros. Continues

1/16/09, 3:54 pm EST

Last month while Warner Music Group and YouTube were bickering over royalties, the label demanded that all their music videos be pulled off the site. Despite the threat, users found many of the label’s videos — by artists like Madonna and Green Day — were still available. But now it seems YouTube has a new plan: muting questionable copyright-infringing material.

This new epidemic seems to only affect some of the thousands (maybe millions) of WMG-owned videos on YouTube. For instance, while watching the My Chemical Romance above, you should be hearing “Kill All Your Friends.” What you do hear is silence. The video’s page greets users with the notice “This video contains an audio track that has not been authorized by all copyright holders. The audio has been disabled.” Since some MCR videos on YouTube still have their audio intact, it’s unclear what criteria the site is using to determine what gets muted.

“Previously, when a music label or other rights owner issued a copyright claim to block audio, the video was automatically taken down,” YouTube said in a statement issued after the muting began. “Now we’ve added an additional choice. Instead of automatically removing the video from YouTube, we give users the option to modify the video by removing the music subject to the copyright claim and post the new version, and many of them are taking that option.”

it’s MCR so youtube did the right thing and muted this crap we call music.

Michael | 1/17/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Wow this is absurd. I really feel like posting everything Warner related on YouTube right now. Why am I being driven to feel as if I need to spite music companies for their inane shortsightedness?

Sable | 1/18/2009, 2:09 am EST

I agree about the spiteful ambitions. I feel it is a squeeze-of-fist by WMG and a fruitless effort. If they can’t stop file sharing, what makes them think they can stop their music from being exposed on youtube? WMG, UMG, EMI and Sony really need to revamp their attitude and redirect for the future. Especially when kids are getting smarter and smarter and technology cheaper and cheaper.

Hairy Plotter | 1/18/2009, 2:30 pm EST

WB are acting troll-ish and protectionist, and Youtube are suckers for playing into their hands and denying users counter-DMCA protections for fair use by closing accounts immediately.

Now, if videos of the WB logo being defiled started showing up on Youtube, now that would be funny.

brian | 1/19/2009, 12:54 pm EST

all it does is hurt wb anyway because it takes away one of the best promotion tools that they have right now.

Freaking Sucks | 1/21/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Most of my videos that I put into my playlists are Green Day. I literally had hundreds of Green Day vids favorited. Green Day is my all time favorite band and I used to watch the vids all the time. this seriously sucks. WB is SO STUPID. and yet they distribute most of my favorite things (albeit it’s usually very CRAPPY distribution on their part) such as Supernatural, Green Day, Harry Freaking Potter. (They don’t promote SN AT ALL, they pull this crap with YouTube which unfortunately involves GD, and they pushed back HP EIGHT MONTHS.)I hate the WB. I wish I could have GD and SN minus all the stupid WB crap.

thedetoxg | 1/22/2009, 4:17 pm EST

who the even wants lo listen to those bands like green day and who cares. they should be toltally erased from existence cuz that shit is exaclty lame and u should pulled off.

reeblite | 1/24/2009, 11:36 pm EST

epic fail on warner bros. part. they should be paying youtube for the free advertising they get from these bands. huge marketing tool ultimately increases sales. i end up buying cd’s, because the net doesn’t have the same quality sound…..

Deef | 1/25/2009, 12:25 am EST

This is just stupid. A friend put some WMG music in the background of his family’s christmas home movies and now the audio is cut out.

bebe | 1/25/2009, 1:35 am EST

It’s getting to the point where it’s utterly ridiculous. I came across someone’s gymnastics recital performance which had been muted because *gasp* the number had been choreographed to a song by a WMG artist. From 1987.

If THE ARTISTS THEMSELVES want the videos taken down, so be it because it’s their music, but what this money-grubbing corporation is doing is reprehensible. If the artists don’t have a problem with the videos being up there–and many of them have said they embrace YouTube–then the videos should be left alone. Period.

Raf | 1/25/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Do you think there is a list of artists and bands connected to wmg?

Troy | 1/31/2009, 8:22 am EST

I will make a conscious effort to not buy anything associated with Warner Brothers. I have the music, but sometimes like to watch the videos people make and those of the artist. In this economy, maybe Warner Brothers will be the next to go under.

Juileit | 2/1/2009, 3:53 pm EST

this is horrible. so while @ companies fight the rest of the world has to sit back and ‘relax’ while trying to find some of favorite music videos. I swear if this keeps up im gathering up all my friends from school, buzznet, myspace, and we will SUE!!!!!!
(lol jk????)

Nothing But Meat | 2/4/2009, 6:44 pm EST

People are just going to torrent what they want and STEAL it if they cant watch for free on Youtube, and once people start torrenting they never go back, so really WB is the one who will pay in the end!

DevoShire | 2/6/2009, 8:55 am EST

Maybe Warner Bothers could name one of their subsidiary labels as “ResprisAL Records”

The Unpromised One | 2/14/2009, 2:27 am EST

To HELL with WMG. They’re cutting the audio off literally every goddamn video for no reason. Most of the good videos are now completely useless or unwatchable all thanks to them. There’s no respect for WMG as far I’m concerned. Goddamn greedy corporatist scum. FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU UUU-

Aether | 2/19/2009, 4:20 pm EST

Ridiculous. Might as well steal my music. I’m not even gonna bother with warner or YouTube. I’ll find music somewhere.

toiletplungersinc | 2/27/2009, 10:57 pm EST

I really don’t see why WB has such a problem with youtube. It’s really one of the best things that could happen to their music. Totally free advertising that everyone wants to see.
But not anymore. If something doesn’t change, I see a major drop off in the amount of users on youtube. Which is pretty sad, since youtube is such an amazing thing.

SparkInTheNight | 3/1/2009, 6:24 pm EST

Man… all of my videos and all of my favorites have something to do with Green Day, so that really sucks. Warner must not see how much this will hurt them. With their videos on YouTube, 1. People will discover new artists of theirs 2. The people may become fans 3. The new fans then buy the band’s merchandize and go to concerts 4. The fans tell other people about the band, then the people look on YouTube etc.
But with WB pulling all of the videos off, 1. There is no way to discover Warner’s artists via the largest video site online 2. People get pissed at WB and boycott their music.
Hmmm… Which is better?

wbsucks | 3/4/2009, 10:10 am EST

On some of the videos they don’t even have a notice about the muting! I was watching one of my fav Blondie vids once and there was no copyright crap about muting… *whew*… but when the video started, instead of hearing the opening chords of “Call Me” … there was silence.

You can NEVER delete EVERY video with copyrighted music on Youtube. NEVER. So why even bother?

bragladish | 3/5/2009, 1:18 pm EST

I’m sick of lawyers screwing up everything. The labels totally rape the new bands, paying them less than minimum wage to tour and they have they them over a barrel, because they’re all tied into the whole conglomerate machine, so if you don’t use them as an entrance then yr left out completely… ya, Neil, not everyone can get yr record deal… screw the labels… period!

David | 3/23/2009, 4:32 pm EST

internet is in the proces of being taken over by coorporations and governments…

they get my finger

red with anger | 4/9/2009, 4:27 am EST

This whole copywrite deal has me pissed off. I feel like the record companys are putting their hands up my ass and controlling my every move on YouTube. Sincerely Elmo.

Lily | 5/9/2009, 8:28 pm EST

I think what we need to do is start a new website to watch videos on,and say screw it to youtube and warner! Has anyone told the artists what’s happening to their music? I’ve just told MCR, but I’ve yet to hear back from them.

Also, DevoShire, your comment is very funny. ReprisAL… lol.

MikeeSpikee | 5/21/2009, 9:35 am EST

Freaking hell – just got a letter from YouTube – about my vid that has a background music in it that belongs apparently to UMG – So not just Warner but all the music houses doing it – Wish YouTube would grow some big ones and stand up to them like those crazy Swede’s did with Pirate Bay….
Think we should just say sod YouTube and start using metacafe etc…

Nikara | 5/31/2009, 10:44 am EST

SparkIntheNight. I TOTALLY FUCKING AGREE WITH YOU!!! This is bull…. they’ve copyrighted 2 of my videos and I had three songs in one of them. ONLY ONE WAS FUCKING OWNED BY WMG!!!!! Grow up by Simple Plan…. DAMMIT! They should just leave the music up there. even if they don’t get royalties from people clicking on the vids, they’ll get even more money from the people who watch the vids and like them! This is Ridiculous and it’s really pissing me off to no end.

Bella | 6/13/2009, 1:08 pm EST

this is bull. and it frickin pisses me off.
I worked so hard on my latest video, and I tried uploading it 4 times today with 4 different MCR songs and they keep disableing the audio.
fuck you WMG.

WMG can burn... | 6/28/2009, 8:21 pm EST

Okay, so I have officially decided to stop using Youtube. Does anyone know another video hosting site that is atleast close to Youtube’s amazingness??

thanks.

Screw WMG | 7/2/2009, 1:01 am EST

Does WMG not see the totally free advertising they’re getting here? YouTube is the largest video sharing site in the world, and WMG is stupid for not taking advantage of the millions of people that use the site every day. What could have been a great way to promote all of their artists has now turned into something that is pissing off nearly everyone I know.

N/A | 8/1/2009, 10:55 am EST

Oh, well. Guess I’ll have to pirate an MP3 of the tracks in question and sync them up to the videos as I watch. If they’re reduced to this kind of silliness, they don’t deserve my money anyway.

Duo Maxwell | 8/13/2009, 2:49 am EST

The one thing I don’t get is why doesn’t youtube practice there right to this law/bill/act it would tell WMG and all other ‘companies’ to shove it.

I think Alot of people tend to forget that this law still exsists and has rights over all later laws. I mean I completely forgot about it until I stumbled into an old site I visited once before with there in there so everyone! start your complaints to youtube on how they should practice their rights to that law!

They cant be sued for what their doing, specially sence their not making a profit out of it, accounts are free, and they are being sponsered *aka money is being given to them for them alloweing companies to put advertisements on their site* so they are doing nothing illegal WMG just ‘thinks’ they can get away with it because they and most likely youtube dont know/remember this law
