Joaquin Phoenix’s Next Big Role: Rapper (Co-Signed by Diddy?)

1/16/09, 2:52 pm EST

The weirdest news of the week comes by way of former actor Joaquin Phoenix, who bid adios to Hollywood with the phrase “Bye! Good” scribbled on his knuckles in order to pursue a career in music. If the Hollywood Reporter is to be believed, Phoenix has set his sights on a specific genre: hip-hop. That’s right, the man who played Johnny Cash on the big screen will attempt to become the next Eminem, and making it all more fun and surreal, the whole ordeal will be filmed.

According to the showbiz mag, Phoenix will perform his first hip-hop show tonight at an unspecified club in Las Vegas. The gig will be the filmed by Phoenix’s To Die For co-star, actor Casey Affleck. Ben’s brother will turn Phoenix’s pursuit to become a hip-hop star into a feature-length documentary. Stranger still, the Hollywood Reporter says none other than Diddy, who was recently seen partying up with Phoenix, will produce the actor’s album.

In what we thought was just a joke at the time, Phoenix actually attempted to rap during an impromptu concert last month in Culver City, California. As this fairly awesome video demonstrates, Joaquin, looking like Jim Morrison during the recording of L.A. Woman, mumbles and slurs his way through his verses while rhyming the words “Boom” and “Room” over and over again. The MC tells the likely stupefied crowd, “He ain’t done yet,” before Phoenix retakes the mike to similar results. If this is all a joke, this is maybe the best joke ever perpetrated by an actor. If this is really happening, well then at least the documentary should be entertaining.

Wow… that’s a worse career move than Heath Ledger’s presciption overload!!!

Your awesome… rap your way right into Celebrity rehab.

I predict back to movies in less than 2 years.

Matric | 1/16/2009, 4:08 pm EST

I’d like to announce that this is my last show as a musician. There’s
no hope for us in the streets.

I’m going to movies, where I can
make a difference.

BYE! GOOD

Joe | 1/16/2009, 4:19 pm EST

If Joaquin pulls this off right, he’ll be right up there with Andy Kaufman as far as I’m concerned, minus the death and flies and stuff.

Lovergirl | 1/16/2009, 4:36 pm EST

So let him try what he wants to. He is in a weired mood at the moment – but … doesn´t everyone sometimes is allowed to have a bad time.
Maybe it works for him …
I´m curious and can´t wait to see the first video about his gig today in Vegas. – Is anyone going to see him?
I like the Lavo – if it won´t be a good show it´s surely a good party.

Uhhh..... | 1/16/2009, 5:03 pm EST

Other than that pesky dying thing, Heath Ledger’s OD made him and his career and his last performance immortal. See Morrison, Jim for further reference.

Mame | 1/16/2009, 5:29 pm EST

Unfortunately, he suffers from an affliction known as Axl Rose disease. This disease causes the sufferer to make stupid career choices, mess up their reputation and become national jokes. The cure for this disease: COMMON SENSE.

he'll be fine | 1/16/2009, 5:53 pm EST

i want to see his show, hopefully he won’t regret anything about what he wants to do,

AB | 1/16/2009, 8:48 pm EST

I hope they are making a “Borat”-style prank/documentry movie. Numerous musicians and actors crashed and burned thinking anyone can be successful rapper. Also, Joaquin Phoenix is one of the few actors who’s involvement in a movie makes me interested in that movie.

Vanilla Ice | 1/18/2009, 5:53 pm EST

Assholes!!!

Mame | 1/19/2009, 12:14 am EST

Simple Math’s career success rate: NONE.

Sad to say Joaquin will end up like his brother. Joaquin is totally on drugs and he is out of control. Very sad story since he is a good actor. Hopefully there can be some intervention before it is too late.

Luvfunnystuff | 1/20/2009, 2:55 pm EST

I picture Diddy & Jaoquin doing blow together at some party and thinking this would be a good idea – it’s sure not beyond Diddy, remember Making the Band!?

C’mon Joaquin!!! The hair and now you wanna be a homie g? 2 wrongs don’t make a right… But 3 rights do make a left.

ChainsawReaction | 2/10/2009, 8:14 am EST

I think he’s just doing this to show that anyone can rap, attempt to rap, or learn to rap. Rap is nothing but a joke these days, Most rappers now dont have a vocabulary of more then 25 words and we all know its not hard to ryhme like Dr.Suess. Most Hip hop songs now dont have a fucken point at all, turning into a waste of music, but if he really is into this then I dont know what to think, he may just have lost his marbles, maybe a identity crisis?? Either way best of luck, Joaquin Phoenix, you’re a good man, great actor, hopefully this wont turn you into the joke it seems your playing…

Oh wow... | 2/10/2009, 11:16 am EST

Am I the only one that thinks that this story couldn’t get more random? Joaquin Phoenix + Mountain beard + hip-hop = WHAAAT???

srius | 2/11/2009, 8:10 pm EST

wow…is he for real…this has to be a joke..

Bob | 2/11/2009, 8:11 pm EST

will the real slim shady please stand up?…

Autumn | 2/12/2009, 4:11 pm EST

Heroin all the way. someone needs to intervene…remember what happened to his brother River Phoenix? drug over dose..

joaquin | 2/12/2009, 6:05 pm EST

I played johnny cash
now you suckers are trashed
My little bro died by the viper room
If I keep up my herion use I’ll die soon.
The minacacle laughter are you f***ing kidding me.
There’s no chorus of angels singing to me.
I party with diddy in the vip
all you broke jokes pray to God for mercy.
I’m not like you and I never will be.

Hrm | 2/12/2009, 7:00 pm EST

It looks like he might be aiming for a Mishka thing? Very strange, but if it’s something he wants to do it’s his choice pass or fail. I think he did well during his Letterman interview, considering the obvious roast. I have to say somehow he was funnier than Letterman, but it may be an attempt to project an alternative image to promote his new career path.

BobbyEmrick | 2/16/2009, 9:27 am EST

DUDE! Joaquin Phoenix is a badass actor and now he is even more badass! he looks like he would be in a hardcore band or something, i am defently buyin that cd!

You know what? Who cares? A mediocre actor claiming early retirement to pursue a music career. Heard this one before? He’s filled with self-importance, He’s deluded. I don’t care.

Elvis P. | 2/24/2009, 1:55 am EST

Joaquin is only doing what I’d done if I had not overdone it…Mind@#$%ing everybody willing to buy it…the rest of us are very entertained and it’s take a true artist to accomplish such a feat. After all…his name is Phoenix…Viva Phoenix!!!

Mike Malice | 2/24/2009, 11:29 am EST

Him and Matisyahu should team up and have the first jewish rap group…

JT O'Sullivan | 8/25/2009, 9:35 am EST

It’s not just a prank on the media.

The ‘punch line’ is going to come around two thirds of the way through the soon to be released documentary directed by Casey Affleck portraying Phoenix’s ‘transition’, and will come as a surprise to many.

Pheonix and Affleck are compiling an experiment where he ‘acts’ as though he is a talent less rapper (the homeless, drugged, despondent character seen on Letterman; the debuts where he falls off the stage etc) in order to bait the media into creating what they have created, Joaquin Phoenix ‘the troubled actor who turned his back on a glittering career to become a failed rapper’.

Ultimately the prank is going to be on everyone who bought into the media’s version of Phoenix, everyone who thought he was actually a talent less rapper. Truth is he was just in transition, building his arsenal of rhymes up from all the hating. Then at the height of the documentary showing all the negative media clips of his ‘failure’, he will flip the script. Some tight production and this is where we will see the real Joaquin Phoenix rap.

It’s a tribute to his bro River. R.I.P
