The Jonas Brothers: Not-So-Secret Fans of the Band

You already know that Nick Jonas idolizes Elvis Costello — but did you know he also digs the Band? At the Jonas Brothers‘ January 4th show in Nashville, the trio busted out a cover of the Band’s classic 1968 track “The Weight” with help from Vince Gill, Phil Vassar and Christian artists Steven Curtis Champman and Michael W. Smith. (Think The Last Waltz, but with more Jesus and less pot.)

“That chorus is undeniably perfect for a group of people to sing together,” says Nick, who was inspired to tackle the harmony-heavy tune by his manager, a die-hard Band fan. “We were sitting up there like a supergroup — it was so cool.”

The Bros also put their spin on Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” (on which Jordin Sparks duetted), Don McLean’s “American Pie” and Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain.” “We pick our cover choices by the city we’re in,” says Nick. “Obviously, ‘Waiting in Vain’ isn’t from Nashville, but that’s one our band really likes to play, so we let them showcase their musical abilities.”

Despite the unorthodox (by Jonas standards) covers, the sold-out crowd was loving the set list. “Some of the younger fans didn’t know the lyrics,” says Nick. “But for the most part, people 16 and up were singing every word.” So which beloved tunes are the Jonases going to dust off next? “[Elton John's] ‘Tiny Dancer’ might happen in the future,” says Nick. “And one day, maybe we’ll do ‘Allison’ with Mr. Costello.” He pauses, suddenly sounding shy. “Actually, there’s this really cool transition of ‘A Little Bit Longer’ that I already worked into it.”

A Jonas Brother actually referred to themselves as part of a “supergroup”. Wow.

themusicelitist | 1/15/2009, 12:40 pm EST

I wish the Jonas brothers would just go away

themusicREALIST | 1/15/2009, 1:09 pm EST

I believe when he said “supergroup” he meant his brothers + Jonas band members plus Vince Gill, Vassar, Michael W. Smith, Steven Chapman.

I’m an adult fan of the Jonases and I was there at their Ryman show. They sounded great, and looked like they were having a blast. It was fantastic.

On top of my pop-rock tastes, I am much more familiar with The Band and music like that than any of Christian or country artists that appeared that night, but they all really pulled off a range of awesomeness all around, and it was very nice to see the Jonas boys stretch and do such a good job of it, too.

They are great (and they are getting greater all the time). SORRY, haters…wah, wah.

It took long enough for this to get press coverage!! Thanks, Rolling Stone.

I don’t understand what business these children have being in Rolling Stone.

Kevin the Robot | 1/15/2009, 1:52 pm EST

When exactly did Rolling Stone turn into Tiger Beat?

Al Jardine | 1/15/2009, 1:55 pm EST

I agree with Kevin. I don’t think Rolling Stone was doing stories on Leif Garret and Donny Osmond in the 70’s.

backSpace | 1/15/2009, 1:59 pm EST

I swear people like musicRealist are just Disney’s PR people paid to counter any honest criticism with gushing hype. I mean, you are an ADULT fan of the Jonas Bros?? Really?! That’s either sad or a lie.

actually ... | 1/15/2009, 2:00 pm EST

they kind of did:

Jonas Brothers…. enjoy the ride and invest you money well…. you may think you have some kind of cred and will have a long career… maybe you will… but it won’t ever mean anything. Better start working on your real estate licenses and planning casino tours now. Boys you are just corporate pawns. … nothing more … nothing less.

WHY | 1/15/2009, 4:41 pm EST

why is this news? We dont care what the jonas brothers like. I cant even think of a song they did. They are not on the radio and only little girls like them so stop reporting on em. Even the hansons had a hit song that everyone knew. These boys are just riding the disney wave to drugs and depression… I hope that taylor swift rights a song about the one being a premature ejaculator and ruins their career

Debi | 1/15/2009, 5:05 pm EST

It always amazes me that so many people who claim to dislike JB take the time to read articles and comment. If you are so fed up, disgusted, or whatever…why do you waste your time with it.
Personally…me and my kids adore JB and I could think of a lot worse role models for my kids.

Keep rockin boys!!

themusicREALIST | 1/15/2009, 5:41 pm EST

Nope, not on anyone’s payroll. Unfortunately. I just use complete sentences. But the accusation does show that a lot of haters are much more fixated on the marketing connections of this band than what they have done musically…I think that’s an opinion as shallow as their branded image is, and says less about them than it does about you. There was no “honest criticism” when I made my comment…there was the lame whining of people who didn’t really have anything to say. Adults can like power-pop, and I like them a lot. And I know I’m not the only one. To each our own!

jenna28 | 1/15/2009, 5:51 pm EST

If you read the article you would realize he meant the artists they played The Weight with (some pretty heavy talent)not just the Jonas Brothers.
I’m an adult fan too. Trust me, they are serious about their music and have shown great growth these past few years.
Thye will be around for a long time.

socool | 1/15/2009, 6:01 pm EST

yeah, anti-jonas hate comments = always the bleating of insecure, unfulfilled men and/or the eager to please women who love ‘em. butch up, guys.

mmmmmk | 1/15/2009, 8:49 pm EST

Did any of you actually read the article? Did you look at the set list for that show? How could anyone with a serious interest in music (most Rolling Stone readers?)not be impressed.
I am a huge fan and I can tell you that they are really talented and continue to grow as artists. It’s unfortunate that the Disney label causes so many of you to dismiss them.
Thankfully Rolling Stone gets it right.

Anonymous | 1/15/2009, 9:03 pm EST

I started listening to the Jonas Brothers because my daughters were interested. To my great surprise, I enjoyed their music too. Several of my friends have had the same experience and were surprised how much they enjoyed their live performance. Their most recent album shows more depth and it is apparent that they are growing as artists. Remember, they may be young…but these boys come from a musical family and have been performing for years. Their parents were singers and their father an accomplished song writer working with some of the gospel greats. Take some time and watch some of their unplugged videos, acoustic sets and covers. The youngest, Nick, is all over the stage playing lead guitar, piano…and he is truly gifted on drums. I think there is a lot more to come from this band. Their concerts OUT SOLD Madonna last year landing in the top ten tours for 2008. They sold out Madison Square Gardens three days straight and drew in more than 50,000 at the Texas State Fair. That is more than the State Fair had ever seen. The fans are growing up along with the band…many of their early fans are in their 20’s now and getting ready to raise families of their own. Remember, when the Beatles were first introduced…the ‘ADULTS’ weren’t impressed either. They wrote them off as a teener booper fad. The fanfare that surrounds these boys is very similar, they create hysteria whever they go. I for one cannot wait to hear the new album this summer.

If you would take that time that you took to post your hate filled messages and instead, look past the image you have of these boys as “kids”, you might notice how incredibly talented they are. They are all under the age of 22 and are wise beyond their years when it comes to music, among many other things. You wouldn’t believe the talent these boys displayed on the stage in Nashville, covering artists like Stevie Wonder and John Mayer, among others. The three of them have a hand in absolutely every part of the music-making process. They write, they play the instruments, and they produce. They write and produce for other artists as well. What else are you asking for?

What exactly would it take for you to give them a chance?

way cool | 1/15/2009, 11:00 pm EST

i think it’s interesting that these boys could sell out an area every night if they wanted to (which they do) and yet, they choose to play a toned down show, in a small venue. making it about the amazing talent that nashville has to offer, and most importantly, about the music. what exactly is wrong with that again?

Deal with it | 1/15/2009, 11:01 pm EST

You can wish for the JB to go away all you want, and you can call them puppets all day. It juset shows that you are insecure, and totally jealous of the fact that they have more talent and drive in their pinky finger than you have in your entire body!

We do not have to like the same things, that is the beauty of being an individual. Being rude just shows your immaturity, and ignorance. Not to mention it displays your supreme insecurity. Grow Up!

The Jonas Brothers are just the kind of band Rolling Stone should be covering.

ftw | 1/15/2009, 11:23 pm EST

i think it is interesting how these boys could easily sell out any arena they wanted to (which they do, often), yet they choose to do a stripped down, intimate show that is about not just the talent that nashville has to offer, but most importantly, the music. it was not a showcase of the boys, it was a demonstration of how music can bring people together. i’d say that’s pretty impressive for such young boys.

WGoops | 1/15/2009, 11:38 pm EST

The Jonas Brothers are exactly who should be featured in Rolling Stone. They are up and coming and they have potential for serious longevity, and they respect musicians who come before them.

ugh i hate that so many ppl look at who they work for in stead of their actual work. I know it’s disney but people on disney are credible artist now. I think it’s sad that people just go and mark them off because of their label.

Jonas Brothers Best Band ever

Better than led zeppelin, doors , beatles, pink floyd, hanson ,

And all those other lousy bands that wish they were the jonas brothers

Whatever,Bitters! | 1/16/2009, 1:28 pm EST

Yeah, “Jonas Brothers Best Band ever” – that’s exactly what Jonas fans are trying to say. *rolls eyes*

It’s not a Best Ever competition, last I checked. The Jonases are simply doing all the things that make all great bands great…playing good music, making their fans happy, and trying to grow as artists by challenging themselves constantly. They deserve respect instead of being mocked for superficial reasons. That’s all.

Insecure haters need to leave them be…if you’d rather live in the past by spending your time with your records or going to see tribute bands rather than a young, evolving band that performs live NOW….that’s your prerogative, and your loss.

Rock on Jonas Brothers!

Friend | 1/16/2009, 1:53 pm EST

Hanson did more before they got pubes than the BloJobros will ever do.

WhateverBitters! whatever | 1/16/2009, 1:56 pm EST

it’s kinda cool to share old songs to new crowd though.

i don’t like their songs but they seem to be decent people

Connor | 1/16/2009, 3:24 pm EST

There would be no Jonas Brothers if it weren’t for Zeppelin, Floyd, The Beatles, and The Band. The only respect that I have for these guys is that they at least show their roots, and give the respect that these guys deserve. All of you senseless commenters need rethink your thoughts before posting….

Jonas Brothers are cute :) | 1/16/2009, 3:38 pm EST

Hey Everybody, What band are they
fans of the article says they are

other crappy groups like Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Pink Floyd
and the other lousy groups .

Jonas Brothers Rock better than
your crappy bands :)

Kliff | 1/16/2009, 5:08 pm EST

If you can put The Jonas Brothers, Britney Spears & Rappers in your magazine, you can surely put Boy George in it. The man is more rock ‘n roll than all 3 of them combined. Twisted, addicted & entertaining. Things that the 3 above aren’t.

nice | 1/16/2009, 5:39 pm EST

Jonas Brothers are pretty cool. Cool story. I like them.

Pop Sensations will last for the moment…. But Real rock n’ roll will only last forever.

A long long walk home for the Jonas Bros to approach The Band.

dude | 1/18/2009, 12:55 pm EST

haha all the JB fans are like “COOL!” “NEAT” and they have no clue who The Band is…here’s a suggestion, stop listening to horrible music like the Jonas Brothers and buy The Last Waltz (on vinyl…not on your iTunes or iPhone or what the fuck ever)

jmo | 1/18/2009, 1:36 pm EST

I call bullshit on the Jonas Brothers and I highly doubt they have a clue what makes Elvis Costello great. I call extra special bull shit on their manager using these prettybots to redistribute whilst destroying his old favorites (clearly not favorites of the Jonas Bros).
tsk tsk.
What would Dylan say?

Goo Goo!!! | 1/18/2009, 6:35 pm EST

Here’s an observation. Why do the BloJobros have no harmony? Most brother duos do, such as the Everly Brothers and Hanson. Methinks the Blojobros have different mamas and papas.

wow. really? | 1/18/2009, 6:59 pm EST

rolling stone, i’d first like to start with you. . .

your publication either needs to shape up or ship out asap. one bullshit cover after bullshit cover has made this publication go from the best to frankly embarrassing. i never, NEVER thought i would see the day when you conformed to plastic manufactured dime a dozen teen fads, i guess they must have you in their pocket, how much do they pay you? frankly, its a slap in the face to all of those many many talented people who used to grace your covers. let tiger beat have their false idols and you bring back real rock and roll, unless you’ve already forgotten what that really is. . .

now i’d like to address the jonas brothers…

stop. stop what your doing right now. you are disrespecting the greats. defiling them with your filth. you want to learn how to cover songs? look at the flaming lips, now there’s a band that can pay respect and keep their own integrity, unlike yourselves. choosing the most mainstream and overplayed songs from these bands doesnt prove your a fan, it shows you really dont know their catalogue and want to pose like a fan for the sake of self image. you will never come close to doing what these bands did, your simply too unoriginal to accomplish anything of the sort. so please, do the right thing for once and admit that your untalented lip syncing bafoons and leave the music making to the real professionals. hopefully you havent done too much damage to the genera, let us pray to the god of rock that it can revive…

dude | 1/18/2009, 10:01 pm EST

yeah, what he/she just said.

JuSt Me! | 1/19/2009, 1:20 am EST

Why you people hate them so much??? They are just the group of the moment, the same happened with Fall Out Boy, The Killers, Kings of Leon and others, the only difference with them is that they, unfortunately, are labeled as Disney singers, but they did an exceptional job and like the others, they got a long way to be on where they are right now!

Just leave them alone now, and get worry if Miley Cyrus enters to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, then all of you have to be very very mad and dissapointed!

Slugger O'Toole | 1/19/2009, 9:20 am EST

Richard Manuel and Rick Danko are turning over in their graves. Have some respect for the greats and stick to your bubblegum bullshit.

Jonas Bros. Own you | 1/19/2009, 3:21 pm EST

Jonas rock all the other bands
to obscurity …

Jonas,Jonas,Jonas,Jonas,Jonas,
Supergroup forget the beatles,
led zeppelin, pink floyd,
grateful dead and the other
crappy groups.
Jonas,Jonas,Jonas,Jonas,Jonas,

haha, but really, no. | 1/19/2009, 11:48 pm EST

hello Miss “Jonas Bros. Own you” (i assume your a miss because it would be far too embarrassing for you to be anything but an obsessed teenie bopper fan girl, hopefully for your sake under the age of 14, you dime a dozen fad girls are as common as barbie dolls, and just as plastic)
now normally i wouldnt be quite so cruel to a brainwashed (assuming there is a brain might be too brash of me)minor like yourself, however i feel like someone had better take you by the shoulders and shake you. hard. so let me pose a question to you. what makes the jonas brothers so great? do they really have something so damn original that they blow those other “crappy” groups out of the water? have the jonas brothers ever come close to writing something like The Song Remains The Same or heart breaker, or something as beautiful as The Rain Song? Have the Jonas Brothers ever dreamed about composing something like Strawberry Fields Forever, or hey jude, or Let it Be. They could NEVER touch Abby Road. and to say the Jonas Brothers trump Pink Floyd?! Pink floyd is still to this day more modern and progressive than the Jonas brothers ever could be. do the jonas brothers even know what a synth is? oh wait, my apologies, that’s the thing that makes their music for them so they don’t have to play it them selves. Pink floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is perpetually playing somewhere in the world at all times, non stop. and it came out 1973!!! The meanings of pink floyds songs reach beyond false heartaches and petty materialism, they delve into insanity and emerge with biting remarks on our trashed corrupted society. could the Jonas Brothers ever make a statement like Animals? no. The Grateful Dead paved the way for an entire genera and then some. not only could they write songs, they could make them up on the spot, play them for hours and still make them interesting. they played with an amount of virtuosity that the Jonas Brothers could never dream of reaching. The Jonas Brothers, would never even call those bands crappy like you did, thats because those bands are great and demand respect. if those bands didnt exist you jonas brothers would be playing turkey in the straw, the generas of rock or pop wouldn’t have been invented, those bands INVENTED THEM. so “Jonas Bros. Own you” get on your knees and thank those bands for what you have now and maybe you’ll learn your place, and the jonas brothers should learn theirs too! it goes sex, drugs, and rock and roll, not chastity ring, warm milk, and rock. no.

HOLD ME CLOSER TINY DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANCER

i hope sir elton gives them a nice cup of “shut the fuck up” soon.

Me | 1/21/2009, 10:06 pm EST

I would like to begin by saying that I’m a metalhead and have never listened to these, Jonas people. However, I’m seeing some sick, disgusting things here. ZOSO is pretty fucking amazing. The Beatles are pretty fucking amazing. Bob Dylan is amazing. I can name a million other bands that are amazing, but it doesn’t truly matters. What matters is the fact that these bitches, sponsored by disney, call themselves rock and roll. Rock and roll is meant to be a form of rebellion, disney can’t be molesting that for their own financial gain, what’s the industry coming to?

How about all you JoBlow fans actually recognize where the “real” “talent” is in this “band” is.

John Taylor – Lead Guitar (I can’t stress LEAD enough)

Greg Garbowsky – Bass guitar

Jack Lawless- Drums and percussion

Ryan Liestman – Keyboards

These are the people who actually produce the sound that you JoBlows fans believe, and attempt to pass off, as music. As you can see, the only parts left for the three incestuously homosexual brothers (IHB) is Lead Vocals (which they suck at anyways) and BACKUP, READ IT, BACKUP guitar.

I don’t believe that they should impose stupid ideals to promote themselves, e.g. family friendly rock. That’s what annoys me, they each wear rings on their left hand to show that they won’t lose their virginity until they’re married.

*As nice as possible way to put it*

That’s their own decision there’s no need to show the world and it’s retarded, my opinion is that it’s more marketing than music, guarantee you that they don’t write a lot of their lyrics or music no matter what they say.

Plus the fact that they compared themselves to the Beatles, they will NEVER be a fraction as good as the Beatles. I for one, have never liked the Beatles, but I respect the ground shaking changes in the way rock and roll was heading a few decades back.

Please let their reign of terror end soon.

partygirl33 | 3/7/2009, 3:02 am EST

Marama | 4/20/2009, 7:33 am EST

I would not usually care enough to comment like this on someone else’s post, but I’ve heard this stuff so much and it’s dang annoying (and I’m a little bored right now), so ‘Anonymous | 3/4/2009′ I feel like dissecting your post, just for a hoot.

“How about all you JoBlow” First off: Wow, mature.

Also, Garbo, JT, Ryan and Flawless are greatly respected by the fans of the Jonas Brothers. They have fans too.

“I don’t believe that they should impose stupid ideals to promote themselves, e.g. family friendly rock. That’s what annoys me, they each wear rings on their left hand to show that they won’t lose their virginity until they’re married.

The decision to wear purity rings was made before the fame. Many people wear purity rings, these guys just happen to be famous. It’s fairly commendable that they haven’t given in to the peer pressure and the sheer hassling that they get from the media and abandoned them. They stick it out.

“Plus the fact that they compared themselves to the Beatles”

Nope. Other people did.

There, that killed some time.

Sarah | 6/24/2009, 8:46 am EST

Why do people care if they are on the cover? Face it, the are artists, even freaking Miley Cyrus is an artist, they have fans who are dedicated, but that doesn’t mean you should look at them differently. Listen to the songs they talked about in this article, and you would realize people who have NO musical talent wouldn’t be listening to these songs. If you actually give some of their music a listen, and not just say its bad because where they come from, I’m sure you will here at least one little piece of something you like in a song, maybe it’s only a riff of guitar, or a verse or a bridge. But they are trying to make music. There is no need to hate, because it’s all based on opinion.
There are artists that I cannot stand, but I do not doubt there musicianship, it is just music that I cannot listen to. Try listening to one of the songs off of “Lines, Vines, and Trying Times” I bet you will at least think one of them is “OK”

-Modern music sucks to older music. 70’s rock is better than modern rock. No one can compare Zep and The Who to anything on the radio today. Some thing with country. If anyone tries to compare Johnny Cash to Taylor Swift it shows how pathetic mainstream msuic has become.

-The JoBro are way more talented than most people will give them credit for. If you listen to radio Disney for longer than 15 mintues ( I have a young daughter) it’s obivous than most of these teen acts are pitiful. The JoBro aren’t the best singers, but they have more raw talent than 90% of the teen acts out there.

Besides their Disney show is cute!

It actually bugs me how ridiculous some of these comments are. So what if you don’t like the Jonas Brothers? That doesn’t change the fact that many people (albeit often young people) do. But can I just quote from a young man called Faris Badwan, please? “Young people are future, and that includes music.” So why, oh why, does it matter that a bunch of immature ”adults” feel the need to spit on the children’s choice for the future? Honestly, I actually feel for some of you sad acts. Is your life so utterly boring you’ve taken to playing Music Elitist with young girls who have barely started to venture into the music scene? Even if you don’t agree with the Jonas boys perhaps you could see them as a stepping stone for these girls into a world full of fantastically mind blowing music? It’s called progression. The JoBro’s are progressing musically and I dare say their fans are too with or without the Jonases in tow.

Anyway I wish I was there, that sounds like the most amazing line up. And tying into my last point, I think it’s opened up a lot of fans to a new side to music and that in itself is fantastic. We need more bands like this.
