Barack Obama Selects the Dead for Inaugural Ball: “It Was Quite an Honor”

Just a week after confirming their first tour in five years, the reunited Dead are booked to rock the Mid-Atlantic Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. on January 20th. “A DJ will open up — it’s a long, strange trip!,” Mickey Hart jokes to Rolling Stone (the DJ in question is celeb spinner DJ Cassidy). “[Barack Obama] picked us specifically,” he adds, “so it was quite an honor. There was a short list and we made the cut.” (For a peek into the President-Elect’s iPod, click here.)

As for the most important question — can the band jam at the ball? — Hart is dubious: “It’s pretty tight, about an hour set. When you play these kinds of things you say, ‘How can I be of service?’ The entertainment committee makes it so that it fits into their huge schedule.”

Another pitfall of political rocking: a background check. “It gave me pause when I had to get a security clearance to play a gig!” Hart says. So did they get past the security scan? “Oh, yeah, we don’t look so bad on paper. It’s not as bad as you might think.”

The Dead partially reunited for a Deadheads for Obama gig in spring 2007, and drummer Bill Kreutzmann rejoined the group for a “Change Rocks” Obama fundraiser at Penn State in October. The tour that kicks off April 12th in Greensboro, North Carolina, features founding members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir as well as Hart and Kreutzmann, joined by keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes.

Obama is a Dead fan? I cannot believe I have never heard about this development before now. I am glad to know that our president elect likes to listen to good music, and gets a good band to play at his events. I wonder what other bands Obama likes?

I wonder if there’ll be a tapers section? That would be pretty hot if Obama set up a FOB rig.

Having the Dead (sans Jerry Garcia) playing the Mid-Atlantic Inaugural Ball in Washington is not going to do shit for this country. Obama has made alot of promises for our country. Hopefully he can live up to those grandiose claims.

“how can he do this then snuff the marijuana question, does he want every one that likes this band and the band itself in the big house?”

i fully agree…don’t invite the dead to play and then skate around the issue. this makes no sense to me…

theotheroneishere | 1/16/2009, 4:14 pm EST

To “Give Me a Break”, I don’t expect the Dead to fix our woes. They’re a band-pure entertainment. It’s just about having a good time. Can’t you just let go of whatever resentment you have and see it for what it is. Music for a party. That’s it, nothing more. Jerry never wanted to be politically affiliated with any party as he always felt he was an entertainer “albeit a ritualistic entertainment” (his words).

To “Good But True” he didn’t skirt the issue. He was clever in his response as to say “I did inhale” which, unlike Clinton trying to cover up the fact that he smoked by some ludicrous statment as to show he didn’t like it or it was some off the wall moment, Barak is at least admitting he did and seems to have enjoyed it by the expression on his face when asked this question.

That’s it for the other one.

The world needs healing now, not divisive comments about someone who hasn’t even done anything yet and people already having enormous expectations of him not understanding the framework he works in. He will do his best I am sure, but for us to unload our insercurities on the man is unwarranted.

Dean | 1/16/2009, 5:27 pm EST

I wasn’t even sure this was real, it looks like something from a conservative blog mocking Obama. Obama is mocking conservatives, I love it.

natfinn | 1/16/2009, 6:32 pm EST

The Grateful Dead seems to be a symbolic choice given the America Obama is inheriting

It’s not about color any more. We’re hopefully past that. As an African-American I’m ready to move on. I’m an “old school revolutionist” and everything isn’t based on color. The man has made his choice (and it is his choice, like it or not). I grew up with the Temptations (a respectful, upstanding, group). I’m not about to take a chance on crotch-grabbing, foul-mouthed, artists who seem to have no respect for anyone but themselves. Thank you, Mr. President-elect. CHANGE HAS COME TO AMERICA.

barb | 1/16/2009, 9:36 pm EST

I was looking forward to Obama’s inauguration until he chose the most boring live band I’ve ever seen. zzzzzzzzzzz

Dak | 1/16/2009, 10:23 pm EST

not for nothing but probably half the people that voted for Obama never even heard of the Dead. the choice befuddles me.

Geoff | 1/16/2009, 10:27 pm EST

Barack may not be a fan of the band – maybe this is his way to say thank you for the two benefit shows they played….. just my $.02

TerpTurtle | 1/16/2009, 10:28 pm EST

Change Rawwwkks! When the power of love overcomes the love of power,We will really be getting somewhere. President Obama has shown just by this selection of The Dead for the Inaugural gala that change is definitely afoot. Keep on Truckin Pres! We gonna get back truckin on!

cosmicA | 1/17/2009, 12:19 am EST

Here comes sunshine, a wake of the flood.barak knows…when life looks like easy street there is danger at your door. Good luck mr president!

kingpaddy | 1/17/2009, 3:30 am EST

Yeah, I had to do a double take too. Yet, Phil, Bob, Mickey and Warren with Gov’t Mule have filled the best house in Fort Worth,Bass Hall a number of times and I can think back 20 years and remember caravaning following the dead. Why not the Prez? Enough of race baiting too. African American…why not just an American.
When the rest of us throw our own party we can pick the band.

Jason Brantley | 1/17/2009, 4:06 am EST

If this isn’t a sign of CHANGE, I don’t know what is. I couldn’t be happier to see this. I’m sure Obama has absolutely no Grateful Dead background or history, but the fact that this iteration of the Dead was chosen for such a historic event speaks such volume to an understanding of generations of people that are ready for a new world order. An acceptance of true thought processes that have the bigger picture in view. Those that cherish love, understanding and progress, the good kind of progress.

Guitstef71 | 1/17/2009, 5:25 am EST

Jerry would puke give me a break!!!

Guitstef71 | 1/17/2009, 8:06 am EST

I guess I should back this with some fact as to why I think Jer would have puked. First of all, he was thrown out of the military for 9, yes 9 a.w.o.l.’s- a little trouble following orders I’d say, secondly, his whole trip was what he called antiauthoritarian-ism, which he believed until the day he died, thirdly, he had a criminal record for possession of narcotics, therefore he would never have “looked good on paper” as Mickey explained, and last but not least, Jerry never had any political or religious affiliation whatsoever, so to say he would have been proud or even involved himself with such a thing is hysterical. Remember what he said about being a leader..”I don’t want to be a leader because I don’t want to be a misleader”
God I miss him!

Shan | 1/17/2009, 11:59 am EST

I am sooo Stoked that Barack picked the Dead!! WoO HoO!! Obviously, he IS a fan by choosing them ~ common sense people! ~ ;)

freakdad | 1/17/2009, 12:11 pm EST

This will be an interesting hour set. Not to many heads will pass the background check. I guess it will be a little like Hendricks playing on the Monkeys tour.

freakdad | 1/17/2009, 12:24 pm EST

Oh and on the whole race thing. His mom was white and his dad was black. He just happened to have skin and hair traits like his father. Hopefully we can get past the whole race issue, since in reality he represents the melting pot of America. Hopefully this fresh face can unite our country and we can move on to a new day where our public servants actually serve instead of serving themselves.

Dark Star Dan | 1/17/2009, 12:58 pm EST

“I want to say to my sisters and my brothers, keep the faith. Through this world of trouble, we have to love one another…” Great choice mister Pres… The lyrics of the Jerry Garcia Band and the Grateful Dead are all that need to be said…

socal | 1/19/2009, 4:00 pm EST

It’s funny that anyone claims to know what Jerry would have thought/done/said.

The fact is, if Jerry *didn’t* do something in times like these, I would lose much respect for him, no matter how apolitical he claimed to be.

The rest of the band has never done something like this for a political candidate, but then again, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Good going, Boys! We’re proud of you.

Surrealfeel | 1/19/2009, 6:01 pm EST

Ok. Spoiler here. Um…does anyone care what the “Dead” spawned a generation of? Oh, love, live let live, yeah. But also a generation embracing the drug culture and the hatred of “the man”. So, they lived in their parent’s basement or on the streets and refused to get a real life. Yeah, hippies. Don’t worry, us real hard-working folks who give a s@*t about things will take care of the losers who sit around and get wasted every weekend.

Mike | 1/19/2009, 6:54 pm EST

None of you know what Jerry would do. None of you. You all think you know so much about Jerry. The problem with that is, he didn’t show all of you all of his private thoughts. You have no idea what Jerry would have done. This is 2008\2009 and you have no clue what his mindset would be – after eight years of Bush.

p.s.
I hope Jackie Greene won’t be there. I really wish he wasn’t in Phil’s band now. I bet you all that know what Jerry would do I bet you’re the types that also like Jackie Greene. Phil doesn’t think straight sometimes.

Jack Strawb | 1/19/2009, 7:56 pm EST

I heard that at the crescendo of the concert, Obama will appear on a flying carpet and throw out sheets of blotter acid that say “Yes we can, dose” and then will transform everyone into smiling, loving people that can do no harm. I can hardly wait.

scott | 1/19/2009, 8:07 pm EST

PS- I dont think alot of people realize how hard Phil rocks these days! Its gonna be fun! And although nobody can possibly know what Jerry would do, I truly think he would support Obama. Especially after all the BS of the last 8 years. Nothin left to do but SMILE SMILE SMILE!!!Peace!!

Past and present they have always been free thinking, hard working, entrepreneurs, that pushed the boundaries of their discipline, unafraid to take a chance, make a change, and embracing the change to move things further. It’s an honor for them to be recognized as such. Keep on truckin’ on!

karen | 1/19/2009, 10:29 pm EST

Guitstef71,
You don’t know what Jerry would have thought 15 years later. If you asked Bob back then if he thought he’d ever be doing this, he probably would have said no, too. It’s not at all inconceivable that if Jerry were alive today, that he would have been inspired by Obama to do it.

You have no clue what you’re talking about. Do you have any clue how many of those hippies are now lawyers, dentists (two of which I know personally), stockbrokers and other people of value that you consider yourself to be one of. Alright you people, you just wait, your all just caught up in this bullshit how the dead are marching into this wonderful new world of change, ‘Obama is going to save the world’ Give me a break, and do some research…Do any of you know that Obama has been being groomed by Zbigniew Brezezinski, David Rockefeller, and a group of trilateral corporate evildoers, who’s main goal is global domination. Forget Iraq, forget Iran, as the next object of U.S. occupation will begin with Pakistan, followed by Sudan, only to get to their main goals( I mean come on do you honestly think that any of these tiny little muslim countries pose any REAL threat to the stability of the grand ole’ US of A) that being Russia and China, which do pose a threat to you Americans (proud to be Canadian)It is those two ‘Powers’ which will become more and more part of US foreign policy in the next two years, and oh yeah beware of the human micro chip…Don’t say I didn’t warn you. And to further my arguement, Jerry was a very smart man, and would have been knowledgeable, and distrusting of this whole scheme, I mean scene!!

Dead Ahead | 1/20/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Guitstef71 – Do you really believe yourself? I mean really , were you one of the people at shows who frowned when others were havin g to much fun. Get over yourself.
