Ryan Adams Announces Split From the Cardinals, Hiatus

Ryan Adams and the Cardinals are going their separate ways, the prolific singer-songwriter writes in a long, long blog post. Adams proclaims that the band’s tour-ending show in Atlanta will be “my last venture with the band and i am grateful for the time we have had and maybe someday we will have more stories to tell together.” The Cardinals have served as Adams’ backing band from 2005’s Cold Roses to last year’s Cardinology. “I am however ready for quieter times as i think it is very evident i am struggling with some balance and hearing issues.”

In fact, Adams blames his ear problems for “false” reports that he’s been intoxicated during concerts. “People accusing me of not being sober when i am suffering tremendous pain and nausea from my inner ear symptoms,” Adams blogs, stating all the reasons why he’s going on hiatus for a little bit. “I am excited to step away. i lost more than anyone will ever know (hearing, someone i loved, my sense of dignity, a never ending losing battle with stage fright.” Adams also promises not to blog anymore, as he needs a private life that is his own.

Despite Adams’ threats of hiatus, it was reported just last month that Adams was already hard at work on the Cardinology follow-up, tentatively titled Dear Impossible. Getting Adams to stop recording seems more impossible than anything else, given his bottomless vault of unreleased material, but we’ll take him at his word. Adams is keeping himself busy as a fledgling author with two books: his 286-page Infinity Blues is due out in April and another book is in the pipeline (Adams says “i LOVE writing….yay!”)

i’m so sad. not.

Hey! Look at me! I’m Ryan Adams! Fall for my bullshit!

andrew | 1/14/2009, 4:51 pm EST

loves writing and hates editing. soverrated.

John | 1/14/2009, 5:14 pm EST

The hostility shown by previous posters here is exactly why Ryan needs this hiatus. I hope to hear from him again sometime soon. And if he (god forbid) decides to leave the music world permanently, let’s remember him for the great American songwriter that he’s always been.

As for the inevitable negative responses to this post – That’s sadly what RA fans will always have to deal with. I’m just glad Ryan is deciding to isolate himself from all this nastiness for his own sake.

Josh | 1/14/2009, 5:16 pm EST

Too bad. I saw Adams and the Cardinals a couple years ago and they were fantastic. They only played 2 or 3 songs that I even wanted to hear, but I walked away thinking it was the best show I had seen in a year or more. The interplay of the band, how they moved together intuitively as one, that was something special to see.

Jere | 1/14/2009, 6:00 pm EST

His past 2 albums have been more consistent and less exciting… I’m still waiting on that boxed set, but I’m not holding my breath either.

em | 1/14/2009, 6:15 pm EST

Noise | 1/14/2009, 6:31 pm EST

Underrated. You all still listen to Jet.

ninecasey | 1/14/2009, 8:31 pm EST

I just read his full post and while it makes me very sad, the fact of the matter is that Ryan Adams is a human beng and if he needs to step away to take proper care of himself, then so be it. I am thankful for all of the great music he has released. I am even more thankful that I was lucky to see him and the Cardinals twice in two years. I still hope he does release that box set–but who knows, that may not ever happen. I just hope, most of all, he takes care of himself.

MaryRay | 1/14/2009, 9:29 pm EST

I understand, but have been extremely impressed with what I have been introduced to in the last 2 years. I hope to hear you in New Haven or NJ. Loved MSG! Feel better:) You are an amazing artist and band. I have been bragging that you are rock n roll.

Can’t wait to get a copy of Cardinology—just waiting for the cold to go.

Johnny Pea | 1/14/2009, 10:02 pm EST

Ryan Adams is and will always be one of the best singer song writers of our time. His lyrics are amazing and his voice is one of a kind.

Lowden | 1/14/2009, 10:41 pm EST

This makes me very sad, being a huge huge fan of Ryan. I hope that the NJ show won’t be the last time I get to see Ryan. Get well soon!

Denton | 1/15/2009, 12:05 am EST

OV-VER-RAT-TED!!!!

This guy has nothing but a huge ego and too much free time.

Lindsey | 1/15/2009, 12:50 am EST

I can’t believe this shit. I was going to his concert for my brithday. Does that mean that they’ll cancel his tour?

dearimpossible | 1/15/2009, 4:06 am EST

Ryan, why do you only pay attention to negative comments? This is a sad day and hope you come back in some form. You are amazing and have one of the most beautiful voices ever. You are certainly prolific- a borderline genius. You have a career most musicians would die for. You have saved people, got them through hard times…this breaks my heart. Of course, all your fans want what is best for you, hopefully it’s not forever…

Red | 1/15/2009, 4:21 am EST

Well Ry, this round of songs was a good push for sure. and as for the rest
This world is ruled by violence, don’t for one second think you will ever be greeted with anything but violence when you try and give something freely of yourself. If you wish to speak freely, you must give them their freedom as well, and love them despite their fears.

Mariska(Netherlands) | 1/15/2009, 4:29 am EST

Leave the man alone, respect whatever he decides, stop judging. amazing how people think they know how his life is, I think we cannot even get close to imagine how it must be to live in the spotlights. I hope he will find his peace, and I hope he will find a way to live with his eardisease. I have a friend who suffers from it, and it is a very terrible condition, you don’t want to have that. Ryan, don’t let the bad things get to you, never, it is not worth it. xxx

Iain Harris | 1/15/2009, 4:35 am EST

Ryan,
If you read this try not give too much credence to hurtful comments by people you do not know.

Nobody likes to read unjust and nasty things about yourself. I find that it is the mindless majority who usually shout loudest in times like these.

I do know of the condition you are suffering and you should be comforted by the fact that people do improve through time.

On a musical level I was at you’re Edinburgh gig in November in and it was musically the best gig of yours I have seen. I have been to your shows 4 times now but the band and yourself had pushed things up a level on this tour. It was an awesome night and I loved hearing Cardinology live.

Do not listen to the doubters. Know that there are true fans out there that care and wish you well. Hope to see you back in Scotland in the not too distant future – obviously with the Cardinals.

Take it easy

Dumb | 1/15/2009, 4:35 am EST

Ryan Fing Adams is in love with hating himself. Somehow garnering a sense of self through music blogs and cherry picked blog comments is seriously F-ing childish. Grow the F up A hole, please care about something more than your own f-ing media induced shadow!

FyouCK

dearimpossible | 1/15/2009, 4:50 am EST

I’m not sure where my post went as it wasn’t off topic, but he is amazing. This is so sad.

MICKY ENGLAND | 1/15/2009, 5:02 am EST

This man gets far to much sh** from twats on the internet, nothing better to do than slag off a artist who has recorded more tracks and albums than most bands in there life!!! he’s got health problems which he need to address Meniere’s Disease is no walk in the park! let this great man chill and sort his problems and stop talking shit or talking things out of context as Ryan has put it “the Cardinals cave” is FOR THE FANS not rubbernecking wasters and haters! peace Ryan hope all is cool Much love to the Cardinals!

Ryan Adams | 1/15/2009, 5:12 am EST

I just wanted to let everyone know that a strange combination being a minor celebrity for as long as i have and also the real lack of any connection to reality has led to this narcissistic media-fed feedback loop. I have no real sense of anything. I am barely human, if that.

I care about the fumes that are coming out of the tailpipes of journalism, I care about the bathroom habits of the gossip communists. I don’t know why, i just do. I mean, if there were anything, and i mean anything more important in the whole entire universe than what people write about me i would be doing that, caring about that. But theres not, not anything i would rather do, than freak out over this stuff. I mean, jease! Come on.

ryan the world is hard enough right now as it is.personally i need you in my life more than ever. get well.

Poor little rose, beaten by the rain
In the wind in the gale, thunder and the hail
Sometimes I feel like I’m going insane
Without the numbness or the pain so intense to feel
Especially now it added up through the years
And I, I taught myself how to grow
Without any love and there was poison in the rain
I taught myself how to grow
Now I’m crooked on the outside, and the inside’s broke

Most of the time I got nothing to say
When I do it’s nothing and nobody’s there to listen anyway
I know I’m probably better off this way
I just listen to the voices on the TV ’til I’m tired
My eyes grow heavy and I fade away

‘Cause I, I taught myself how to grow
Without any love and there was poison in the rain
I taught myself how to grow
‘Til I was crooked on the outside
I taught myself how to grow
Without any love and there was poison in the rain
I taught myself how to grow
‘Til I was crooked on the outside, inside’s caved
Crooked on the outside, inside’s caved
Crooked on the outside, inside’s caved
I taught myself how to grow old

MICKY ENGLAND | 1/15/2009, 5:46 am EST

For everyone alone I wish you faith and hope
And all the strength to cope
To be your own best friend have
confidence and keep the faith
Be patient oh the past is just a memory and heal
Heal your vines you’ll heal inside eventually

peace!

thanks for everything Ryan, you helped me grow up. The Netherlands loves you!

Mike/Houston,TX. | 1/15/2009, 9:10 am EST

I’ll definitely miss RYAN ADAMS. He needs a break! Adams has issued more albums – 11 – in less than his first solo decade, than most noteworthy artists release in their entire careers. Then, there are those Whiskeytown albums from the previous decade. He’s not even 40 yet – that’s till five years away! He needs to go off and regroup, recharge himself, get some rest and enjoy life for a while after years of nonstop touring and record releases. I prefer Ryan as a solo artist than in a group, and I can’t wait to see/hear what music he will rebound with in the future. He won’t be gone very long – MUSIC is his life, his entire existence. He will be missed.

alma | 1/15/2009, 9:49 am EST

thanks ry. your music has always been a true inspiration and cure for me, hope you´re getting better and enjoy whatever´s up next.

Griff Simmons | 1/15/2009, 11:18 am EST

So if that’s really him below, he already lied about not blogging anymore. Attention whore, can’t keep away.

cmon | 1/15/2009, 11:34 am EST

really? Hiatus = rehab? The new album out later this year will be brilliant. Ryan is at his best when his poor little narcisitic heart is “broken”. As for the Cardinals, good riddance to overhyped hippie nonsense. Ryan can finally get back to what he does best. Putting together albums that defy genre. The Cardinals routine has become a stale cliche. Back to basics Ryan.

Bryan Adams | 1/15/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Thanks for laying low.

Tom | 1/15/2009, 1:29 pm EST

Dude, what??? anyone dissing The Cardinals needs to get their hearing checked. “Hippie nonsense?” what does that even mean? Moron. They are supremely talented group of players. Sad to be so misguided – and a hater.

C (Argentina) | 1/15/2009, 2:58 pm EST

Ryan, your music gave sense to my life in very sad moments, and it keeps every day. maybe its not enough but thank you!

Lazystar | 1/15/2009, 3:40 pm EST

Stay with the groove!
MFCEEEE!

killtheindustry | 1/15/2009, 4:09 pm EST

He lost Parker Posey……. the world’s coolest woman… what a tool. Ryan is far too self indulgence and really hasn’t produced anything interesting in about 5 years. This guy’s due date has past.

suz | 1/15/2009, 4:32 pm EST

don’t read this crap, ryan. there are too many people that enjoy your music to just focus on the haters. and for the people that don’t like ryan: why are you wasting your time reading this article and making comments then? get a life.

dan | 1/15/2009, 4:54 pm EST

funny how only the greatest artist can conjure up so much reaction both good and bad. i suspect most of Ryan’s detractors are failed songwriters sitting in they’re bedrooms with jealous heads full of misery wondering why they cant seem to write like him. the kid was a legend by 21 and you just know his best work is still inside him aching to be released.hopefully this will turn out to be the extent of a jay z retirement at most….

Anonymous | 1/15/2009, 5:45 pm EST

There is a God! Of course, I’m sure he’ll be back in a year..

Four Nick Eight | 1/15/2009, 7:00 pm EST

At best, he has flashes of brilliance. At worst, pablum drivel (New York–gag). He does have diarrhea of the pen and should edit himself a little bit more, but overall body of work I would say is 84 out of 100. A real hiatus where he doesnt write for a while would do him good.

shotgunz | 1/15/2009, 7:50 pm EST

next-whiskeytown reunion pleeeeeeze.

Austin fan #2 | 1/15/2009, 8:41 pm EST

53-years-old and can’t imagine how dull my life would have been without Ryan/Cardinals these last few years. Their absence will leave a deep, dark hole. At least Ryan is still writing…suppose I’ll have to provide my own melody.

Ivory+Blue | 1/15/2009, 9:58 pm EST

These comments are ridiculous…
Ryan should wise-up and stop reading this junk that other people write about him.

Enjoy your break from all this bullshit, Mr. Adams! Come back to those of us who actually care about the music & art soon.

MICKY ENGLAND | 1/16/2009, 9:24 am EST

You lot are selfish bastards!!!

Hes got health issuse!! can you fuckers not read!!!! “Ménière’s disease” There is no cure for Ménière’s disease. However, the symptoms of the disease are often controlled successfully by reducing the body’s retention of fluids through dietary changes (such as a low-salt or salt-free diet and no caffeine or alcohol) or medication. Changes in medications that either control allergies or improve blood circulation in the inner ear may help. Eliminating tobacco use and reducing stress levels are more ways some people can lessen the severity of their symptoms.

Different surgical procedures have been advocated for patients with persistent, debilitating vertigo from Ménière’s disease. Labyrinthectomy (removal of the inner ear sense organ) can effectively control vertigo, but sacrifices hearing and is reserved for patients with nonfunctional hearing in the affected ear. Vestibular neurectomy, selectively severing a nerve from the affected inner ear organ, usually controls the vertigo while preserving hearing, but carries surgical risks. Recently, the administration of the ototoxic antibiotic, gentamycin directly into the middle ear space has gained popularity worldwide for the control of the vertigo of Ménière’s disease. symptoms of Ménière’s disease occur suddenly and can arise daily or as infrequently as once a year. Vertigo, often the most debilitating symptom of Ménière’s disease, typically involves a whirling dizziness that forces the sufferer to lie down. Vertigo attacks can lead to severe nausea, vomiting, and sweating and often come with little or no warning.

Some individuals with Ménière’s disease have attacks that start with tinnitus (ear noises), a loss of hearing, or a full feeling or pressure in the affected ear. It is important to remember that all of these symptoms are unpredictable. Typically, the attack is characterized by a combination of vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss lasting several hours. People experience these discomforts at varying frequencies, durations, and intensities. Some may feel slight vertigo a few times a year. Others may be occasionally disturbed by intense, uncontrollable tinnitus while sleeping. Ménière’s disease sufferers may also notice a hearing loss and feel unsteady all day long for prolonged periods. Other occasional symptoms of Ménière’s disease include headaches, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea. A person’s hearing tends to recover between attacks but over time becomes worse.

This great man is going deaf!!! :( get your head round that! you fucking haters!

Time to chill Ryan and sort YOURSELF!!!! forget the haters!!! world full of them!

rednano74 | 1/16/2009, 8:55 pm EST

Over the last 2 years Ryan Adams has become my favorite artist and definitely my artist of this decade. Finally got to see him and the Cardinals in concert last month and they really impressed me. Sorry to see the Cardinals go but I am hoping Ryan goes more raw in his furture material than Cardinology. LOVE IS HELL is one of my all time favorite albums. Hope to hear from you soon Ryan and enjoy your time off for whatever reasons turn out to be true.

Fan in OK | 1/17/2009, 9:41 am EST

I too suffer from the same symptoms as Ryan has the vertigo, although I do not have hearing loss, yet. I love your music and will miss seeing anything new from you, although I will still listen to your older stuff over and over. There are a lot more people out there who love your music than hate it. Still, I don’t think you can deny yourself what you love to do and that is play and compose music. Beethoven did not stop writing music when he lost his hearing, that was his destiny. Maybe you just need to get away from all the hype and get back to nature and let your body and your soul heal itself. If I were you and had the means to do so, I would get a place somewhere away from all the fast paced living and relax for 6 months. I would love to quit my job and do that!
I am sure you will find yourself writing more music and also those books you want to write. I have a feeling you will be back to us someday, you just need to take care of yourself now. Good luck I wish you the best!

Nicklas | 1/17/2009, 12:01 pm EST

We in sweden will miss you. Get well soon!

jrmcrna | 1/19/2009, 9:15 pm EST

OK-a friend saw him in KC and he laid on the floor for 3minutes until the guitar played a rift he had been practicing on the tour bus…that had nothing to do with vertigo but being an idiot(which the guitar player never played).
he said it was embarrassing and the show was totally off-kilter.
he has some wonderful songs but needs to “GROW UP”.
don’t blog is you can’t handle the criticisms and want privacy for god’s sake!!!!!!!

CS | 1/21/2009, 12:49 am EST

I met Ryan In october and found him to be genuine, caring and supremely kind. And very sober. I’m a fan of all his work and understand his dilemmas but truly, I wish he’d avoid the drama of blogging. Just hire a PR person, already and let them send out the press releases. C’mon, you’re a professional, man!

Aaron | 2/2/2009, 11:35 pm EST

I have always thought that Ryan had a ton of potential and was always waiting for him to blow everyone else out of the water. It has never really happened, but I could pull 15 of my favorite Ryan Adams tracks together into a playlist and I would still feel like its some of the best stuff I have ever listened to. I have never understood how anyone could listen to My Sweet Carolina and a few other tracks and not be interested. Maybe one day I can go to a Whiskeytown reunion tour.

certainlynotryanadams | 2/7/2009, 1:27 pm EST

how does it feel to have your noses so deeply in someone elses peanut butter? No wonder he’s going recluse!

Now, I love Ryan Adams but for fuck sakes you people are creepy!

Jesse

Francoise | 4/15/2009, 11:58 pm EST

What a shame. I love his music. I hope he does whatever is best for him, whatever the motivation and despite others’ opinions, good, bad or ugly.
I didn’t know about Ryan’s balance/hearing issues, real or rumored. I have balance problems from MS and I have lost about 30% of my hearing. Only people who have lost any amount of their hearing can understand how frustrating and disheartening it is. The sense of isolation in a crowded room has to be the worst. Hearing issues and vertigo-type problems (which my mother has) could very well be why Ryan wants a break.

Kevin | 4/17/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Your show in Mobile SUCKED!!! Shame on YOU!!!

jrmcrna | 4/24/2009, 1:03 pm EST

hadn’t input this yet..he played in kc and quit in the second set.
played 16 song where as other venues 24..i have to say the crowd was rude-the row in front of me was like a clown car-beer, bathroom, talk, talk, talk(6 people)-7th row center…no wonder he quit..it was really pathetic for those of us around them-the show was good until that moment.
don’t go to concerts when you can go to a bar and talk.

bella blue there is this time in view
sitting in front of this open mind
stories my morning glory
aged soul brought forth
tributaries lead inside moments
over the dreams of past days
horizon life
strung together by events
practical patience burning slowly
the final inhale of love
lasting beyond the night fall
where did we leave off
consciously correcting tides
that create questions of the present
built by the past
when i did not know u
or feel the strings inside
the marionette of love
strength to build a new
four cornered axiom
hinged on the breath of our souls
mind and heart see clearer
day light distractions
reflecting your beauty
tracing the burnt impression
from the cast of crowns
so would you be
better yet could you be
it is just that simple
a boy. . . a girl

met RA in Madison . .seemed stage fright when not on stage. . GREATEST singer songwriter since Dylan! I vote he writes the novel that is itching inside him. . PINK MAGIC is GR8 and potential is burning.

Good time for a break is up to the person who take’s it. Don’t be mad at him for taking needed time. I Had a bout with drugs and a long last 6 years with alcohol, i also play in a band. Iv’e been sober 15 months and it is still hard to look and see thing’s sober. I feel like i’m being spyd on all the time. it’s strange. plus his hearing problem, i could not imagine dealing with something like that, on top of that. I know how bad it sucked for me. Playing show’s is nerve racking for myself, espically without the crutch. Best of luck to you ryan. and the cardinals. i saw you guys in feb this year in missouri. Honistly That was the best concert i have ever been to. Beat’s the dead. the eagles brad paisley, ratdog, violent femmes, and others I have seen just in the months b4 i saw the cardinals live. I can honistly say that show changed my life. It also opend my ears musicly to things i never dreamed i could do:)
