On the Charts: Nickelback Can’t Catch Taylor Swift as Sales Continue Slump

The Big News: If you thought last week’s sales were slow, check out these numbers. Taylor Swift sold 72,000 copies of Fearless — 17,000 less than last week — to take Number One. Nickelback’s Dark Horse jumped from five to Number Two, followed by Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak, Beyoncé’s I Am … Sasha Fierce and the Twilight soundtrack. Only three albums sold more than 50,000 copies, and the Number 10 disc, Akon’s Freedom didn’t crack 27,000. That, in a word, is bleak — and might explain the closing of Virgin Megastore’s massive Times Square location.

Debuts: Evidently recessions make people want to groove more: the only new LPs to hit the Top 50 were dance compilations — Total Club Hits came in at 16 and Ultra Dance 10 hit Number 41. Glasgow rockers Glasvegas (more on them later today in the Breaking Blog) entered at 126 and Rolling Stone favorites Blitzen Trapper hit the chart once again with 2,600 copies of Furr — enough to reach Number 189. And it’s not a debut, but it certainly made us smile: onetime American Idol hopeful Kellie Pickler rounds out the Top 200 in last place with her self-titled disc, just in time for the premiere of the show’s new season!

Last Week’s Heroes: The Top Five reshuffled, but nobody came or went, and the six, seven and eight spots remained the same: Britney Spears followed by Keyshia Cole and Jamie Foxx. It’s unlikely the chart will get a jolt until Bruce Springsteen’s new album hits stores (unless Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion moves big numbers based on its huge blog buzz).

Can someone explain to me how Taylor Swift is different from Shania Twain? I heard “Love Story” on the radio today and I liked to puke.

Who is buying anything Nickelback? Obviously someone is, but I can’t for the life of me figure our who. I have never once seen a Nickelback CD on anything but a shelf in Walmart.

I think anyone who would actually buy that crap doesn’t really like music so much as just the thrill of spending money.

Id love to see Nickelback get to number 1.

“Dark Horse” is awesome.

dude | 1/14/2009, 2:01 pm EST

people that listen to Taylor Swift and Nickelback should just keep listening to Taylor Swift and Nickelback…those people don’t deserve to listen to anything else other than that horrible CRAP!

Animal Collective | 1/14/2009, 2:19 pm EST

I would love for Animal Collective to chart well. I think they are great…..I don’t think they are going to shake up this bleak chart though. Maybe the Boss can work some magic….

Nickelback is racking up hit single after hit single. Their albums usually land in the Top 10 and momentum builds slowly to a sure fire #1 and sales of the mother album explode. Funny how people bash and make fun of anything/anyone who is a fan of this mega-multi-platinum band, yet their recordings sell and move massive numbers over a period of time. Reminds me of THE CARPENTERS during the era of Led Zeppelin, Santana…When I was a kid, it was not cool to buy/listen/be a fan of the Carpenters, yet, they were all over the radio, they racked up over two dozen hit singles, sold over 100 MILLION records[still selling], and became classic pop icons. Nickelback seems to be enjoying the same popularity and exposure. The fans are out there…somebody is buying their records. Even during this sales slump, Nickelback will attain huge sales from their music.

As for Taylor Swift..here today, gone tomorrow. That’s NOT Country – it’s slick pop-rock with a fiddle thrown in the mix here and there. Remember Taylor Dayne? She was huge for a short period in the 80’s – # 1 singles, hit Lps…by the end of that decade, she was gone, gone, gone.

Mike from Texas, it’s OK if you like this band. It’s your decision. But record sales do not equal quality. Sorry. The American public is known to buy and mass consume shit. How else do you explain the KFC Famous Bowl? Or the Jonas Bros.? How many total shit songs have been No. 1 lately? Or ever? Middle America (where most of their sales are tallied) is made up of sleepwalking consumers whose tastes definitely should not be considered any sort of measuring stick for what is quality. But if you like them, go ahead and consume. Just don’t get mad if people laugh at you for it (and really, why should you care anyway?).

Are the charts really relevant anymore? 1/4 of the albums on the charts are from young Disney artists and are targeted for younger audiences.

The people who like Nickleback are the same people who like Nascar. I dont know any of these people, but there are a ton of them out there.

Simple Math | 1/15/2009, 12:07 pm EST

Vanilla Ice=10 million coipes sold of “To the Extreme”

M.C. Hammer=15 million copies sold of “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt Em”

Nayer | 1/15/2009, 12:24 pm EST

I absolutely love the fact that Mike/Houston TX lumped Nickelback in with the Carpenters!!! Beautiful, so appropriate, enough said!

Heathen2002 | 1/15/2009, 5:50 pm EST

The charts are irrelevant, but thankfully Nickelback are the victims this time. “Mr. Kroeger- I believe your 15 minutes are up. Please take your place in line behind Creed.”

Heathen2002 | 1/15/2009, 5:53 pm EST

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why she’s so hot right now: She’s hot. That’s it. Unfortunately, that’s the only way to make it…Sad..

love nickelback

LOVE BOTH | 1/18/2009, 8:11 pm EST

I love both Nickelback and Taylor Swift and have all of their albums including their respective latest releases. They are both great in their own respect and possess massive talent that will keep them around for quite some time…Nickelback has already been around for the better part of the last decade.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 1/20/2009, 2:56 am EST

Yeah Nayer, but I’m NOT knocking the Carpenters nor Nickelback. I like them both. The late Karen Carpenter possessed an impeccable voice that has reached beyond generational borders and far across time to connect with music lovers from all walks of life who never existed during her Karen’s lifetime. My neice is 18, loves death metal, alternative and heavy duty rock & mostly listens to that genre, but one day she came home and had heard a Carpenters song and asked “WHO IS THAT?” She was amazed at Karen’s voice, researched her, and has become a huge Carpenters fan as well. That’s a tremendous impact, considering she was born in 1990, 7 years after Karen died, and 15 years after that band’s radio/chart hit era. You can’t limit yourself – variety is the key in music. Let’s remember that Karen was the very first female drummer who sang immaculately as she played drums simultaneously & provided the beat for the band behind her massive drum kit in perfect time without missing a single beat on both fronts. You don’t see many drummers also singing lead vocals on every song, it’s a rarity, and much less a female. The exact same can be said of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Three Dog Night, etc. who racked up dozens of hit singles in a short period and generated funding for their record companies to keep producing the music. Bands like these generate millions of $$$ in revenue for record companies and in turn, this helps promote and develop much lesser up and coming bands. Roger Hodgson, lead singer of Supertramp & record company labelmates[A&M Records] thanked The Carpenters after Karen died because he discovered that while Supertramp was in its developing stages early in their career, the Carpenters provided the funding for that band’s hotel rooming, meals & touring expenses while they were financially broke and barely staying alive out on the road and off as well. Nickelback’s massive recording sales are doing the same – not all that $$$ goes diresctly to the band itself.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 1/20/2009, 3:03 am EST

I love Nickelback too – Chad Kroeger is one of the most dynamic and greatest male vocalists ever. And I am not ashamed, not embarrassed to say I adore Karen Carpenter and her music – she and her brother Richard were true musicians in a touring band.

CLAMHORN:
I am a die hard country music fan and have been for over 25 years. I buy the “crap” as you say and listen to it daily. I don’t buy it “just to spend money” you moron. Not in this economy.
I did buy Nickelback’s Dark Horse after seeing and hearing Gotta Be Somebody on VH1. That album is the best album I have ever heard in ANY genre of music. ANY GENRE OF MUSIC! Why is it if people don’t have anything nice to say they still can’t keep their damn mouths shut.

perry | 6/1/2009, 3:00 pm EST

nickle back rocks tayler swift suks

Nickelback? | 8/17/2009, 10:03 pm EST

Nickelback sucks. All their songs sound the same. Listen to The Beatles. They have sold over 1 billion, so don’t act like 100 million is some huge number. And don’t say all their sales came from the 60’s, they are the second best selling musical act this decade.
