Jeff Beck’s Road to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

When he joins the class of 2009 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland on April 4th, Jeff Beck will join a short list of rockers that have entered the Hall of Fame twice: The guitarist was first inducted in 1992 as a member of the Yardbirds, and now 17 years later he’ll be honored for his solo career. (Coincidentally, Beck’s Yardbirds predecessor Eric Clapton is the only musician to be inducted three times: With the Yardbirds, Cream and as a solo artist.)

Beck, Rolling Stone’s 14th Greatest Guitarist of All Time, was coming off a two-year hiatus when the magazine profiled him in the June 24th, 1971 issue. Working on the follow-up to his classic Beck-Ola, the rocker was embroiled in record label controversy and spending time in the studio with famed Motown producer Minnie Most. Talking with writer Andrew Bailey, Beck reminisced about the night when after a gig with the Tridents, he was approached to join the Yardbirds:

“One night we’d just done a great set when this chap comes out of the audience, smoking a cigar, and asked me if I wanted to join this group. And I said, ‘Naah. Fuck off, man.’ And then I thought that if I had some more money, I could do more things. Then I found out that the group was the Yardbirds. I didn’t like them when I first met them. They didn’t say ‘Hi’ or anything. They were pissed off the Eric had left, they had thought that the whole Yardbirds sound had gone. That was the impression I had got. They said, ‘Can you play blues?’ I said, ‘Wot, slow blues? Chi-ca-go blues?’ They said anything. So I honked around. They said to get rid of the echo … you don’t use an echo in Chi-ca-go blues … yeah, that’s just what they said!”

For more from this interview, including Beck on the nervous breakdown that forced him to quit the Yardbirds, playing lead guitar alongside Jimmy Page and his infamous freak-out in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up, check out the entire profile:

Solo Career? | 1/14/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Beck is inducted fr his ‘Solo Career’
What in the wide world of bass players is going on here? Beck can’t sing, can’t write a song and is most definitely the most overrated guitar player of all time!!

Anonymous | 1/14/2009, 7:13 pm EST

Jeff Beck doesn’t have to sing to have a solo career! That argument makes no sense. So you’re saying Miles Davis had no solo career because he didn’t sing? Shut up, not all music is centered on vocals. Jeff Beck composed the music, and whether it was instrumental, or sung by Rod Stewart, or whoever, it was Jeff’s band. And overrated? No, shut up.

the mon-ster | 1/14/2009, 7:19 pm EST

@ Solo Career?

Most overrated? No. That would be Santana.

Immerstahl | 1/14/2009, 10:41 pm EST

Overrated?! WTF?! If you need a lesson in why this cat belongs in the HoF, check out his set from Clapton’s guitar festival last summer. Beck was cuttin’ head! He stole the show–with the likes of Buddy Guy, Clapton, Derek Trucks in attendance.

shut up | 1/14/2009, 11:34 pm EST

Jeff Beck is a geinus player,he can’t sing ,so what????Who say that guitarist must sing??
He can play the best sound, best tone, interpretation the mature, deep emotion beyound many other guitarists.
who say that he can’t write??
Check up all his works first!!
“most definitely the most overrated guitar player of all time!! ”
really??
haha, what the ridiculous and innocent opinion!!

MisterHate | 1/15/2009, 11:55 am EST

Fourteenth best on ‘the list’ huh? I believe that’s one spot behind Jack White, if memory serves. Just goes to show ya that the list means nothing. Kinda like how the R&R HOF inducts their members. Blah.

Jeff worked with Mickey Most, not Minnie Most. But he is not overrated, he is underrated, and very deserving of this long overdue honor. Too bad The Stooges aren’t also being inducted: the Hall of Fame voters ought to be ashamed.

bluesriff | 1/15/2009, 3:22 pm EST

Great, It takes Jeff Beck 40 years to get accepted and now he must share the stage with RUN DMC?
And you morons crying “overrated!”….
Beck has long been known as one of “the most influential guitar players of our time!”
Plus, he was doing this wild and genius stuff 40 yrs ago. Take off that new David Archuletta CD, throw away your Jonas brother’s poster’s and memorabilia,.. Pop in Beckola, listen and learn!

Considering that he was her idol, I could think of no other person to induct Jeff Beck into the Hall thanChrissie hynde.

flappo | 1/23/2009, 12:09 pm EST

most overrated ?

ahahh , too funny

he’s a living legend revered amongst his peers ; clpaton , page , may , admired by the modern generation such as , evh , vai and satriani and as has been mentioned even jimi hendrix was a fan

I agree with the non-singing comment. I think there needs to be vocals to be appreciated as a musician, if Keith Richards can sing? there is hope for Beck.

His whammy-bar happy antics grate on my last nerve, but he can play the hell out of a guitar. Take some voice lessons Beck, and join the rest of the guitar gods when you’re ready.

Overrated? What kind of idiot would say that? Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix are probably the 2 greatest guitarists that have come out of rock music. He should have gone into that HOF long ago. He went in as a Yardbird but his true greatness came later. I guess it is partly a popularity poll.

Chris Gordon | 3/25/2009, 4:48 am EST

I have 31 Jeff Beck albums and I think he’s lacking as a guitarist. In terms of what his fans think of him he is overrated for sure. He’s not as good as they make out by a long shot. In terms of accomplishments versus fame he is not overrated at all. That crown has to go to Earwick Crapton.

Chris Gordon | 3/25/2009, 4:53 am EST

I mean it’s like if you are a Cure fan or something, they’ve been around since 1979 and fans love Robert Smith. Their opinion is skewed from reality by their love. It’s not a bad thing, but it’s there. Beck isn’t any better or worse than Robin Trower, Leslie West or John McLaughlin. He’s one of the greats, he should be in the HOF. I think Crapton is the pits quite frankly, and Santana isn’t far behind in many ways.

Chris Gordon | 3/25/2009, 5:01 am EST

@Flappo (not his real name?) modern generation: EVH, Vai, Satriani. How old are you mate, if that’s what you call modern? Vai will be 50 in a few months. I’m so sick of sycophantic fans. Just like love is blind, guitarists’ fans are retarded.

jimmy | 4/2/2009, 6:29 pm EST

Ive seen jeff play live in the seventies and 4 times in the last 10 years. He is without doubt the master of tone, soul, feel, and can blaze with anyone!!!!! Check out high ho silver lining..yes thats jeff singing..mickie most wanted to make him a singing pop star…long overdue for hof…

Noah | 7/11/2009, 10:45 am EST

For the record, Jeff Beck can sing, and he does so on several songs from throughout his career. And while he’s not an incredibly prolific songwriter, he has written some great songs. Oh, and he’s the est guitarist ever.

Irish Brian | 9/5/2009, 12:23 pm EST

Jeff Beck plays the worst kind of muzak blues …. it’s truly embarrassing to listen to him sometimes……
