Neil Young Debuts Hilarious Clip for New “Fork in the Road”

1/13/09, 12:43 pm EST

Neil Young was frantically writing songs about the economic meltdown and his LincVolt project during his 2008 world tour, playing as many as ten per show by the time the trek wrapped last month (click here to check out a live report). Just a few days ago he posted another new one on YouTube and his website with virtually no fanfare. Wearing a blue “Tube Amp Repair” t-shirt and eating an apple (with headphones plugged into it), Young sings about the economic collapse against a basic blues beat. “I’m a big rock star,” Donald Trump’s favorite rocker sings in the hysterical single camera video. “My sales have tanked, but I still got you. Download this, it sounds like shit.”

Near the end he plays some mean air guitar while a flat screen TV is repossessed in the background. A spokesman for Young confirms the song is the title track to a forthcoming studio album. What does that mean for the perpetually delayed Archives box set that was due out in March, and the Crazy Horse album Toast? “It seem logical in light of the timeliness of the subject matter that it will preempt Archives and Toast for the time being,” the spokesperson says. “But that hasn’t been confirmed yet.” With Neil Young, very few things ever are.

ARGH…

Well, see you in 2025

JP | 1/13/2009, 3:07 pm EST

I can’t afford the “Archives” set. So, I’ll settle for this timely-themed album.

As for the song, I LOVE IT! It’s as urgent as the album “Living With War” with the snarkiness of the song “This Note For You”. I can wait for “The Archives” and the lost Crazy Horse album to get this album first.

Rustoid | 1/13/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Love it.

Keep on rockin’, Neil!

Peter S | 1/13/2009, 3:59 pm EST

Absolutely GREAT! Funnny! and true.

buffalo tom | 1/13/2009, 4:04 pm EST

forget the archives – that can wait until neil stops making amazing, relevant music.. there’s plenty of time to dust off old tracks later, for now appreciate this living legend – he still has so much to say.

Luke | 1/13/2009, 7:12 pm EST

kujive | 1/13/2009, 7:50 pm EST

If only Bowie could toss ‘em out as fast as Neil.

RTickle | 1/13/2009, 8:45 pm EST

I heard 4 new songs back-to-back-to-back-to-back in Chicago and they were FANTASTIC. I turned to the guy next to me and said, “that son-of-a-sports-writer just hit a frickin’ GRAND SLAM”.
Bring on the LUCY!!!!!

StillsHashnCrosBite-Me | 1/14/2009, 12:36 am EST

p.s. kujive.. get your head out of your ass before you suffocate.

HisMajestyMichael | 1/14/2009, 10:43 am EST

Neil Young, rhymes with quintessential ARTIST.

Anonymous | 1/14/2009, 5:34 pm EST

Neil = Classic !

Matthew Parrish | 1/14/2009, 10:37 pm EST

Listen…I love Neil Young but he needs to STOP. I liked Living with War for the most part and a couple of songs on Prairie Wind but I didn’t even get around to Chrome Dreams II and now there’s ANOTHER ONE? And this is the single? It’s terrible. The simple blues riff isn’t the problem…it’s that there’s no engaging melody. I realize it’s basically a spoken word song but I think those are awful 99% of the time. You’re a musician, not a poet.

Jim Walberg | 1/15/2009, 1:46 am EST

I wasn’t going to say anything but Matthew Parrish is such a dumbass that I felt obliged. Neil Young is Neil Young. Just as you are Mathew Parrish. Why do you feel the need to criticize Neil? First of all, he’s one of the only musicians saying something about all the bullsh-t going down right now. Second of all, Neil Young is one of the coolest dudes our lifetime will ever know. Just respect the brotha. Peace out. And Matthew, go f yourself. haha.

cavi | 1/15/2009, 8:42 am EST

great… simply great! neil is a legend.. if he keeps spitting out amazing songs like this, the box set is going to monsterous…. and worth every cent!

Jim | 1/15/2009, 12:45 pm EST

DMRoberts | 1/16/2009, 12:49 pm EST

Neil – keep rolling it out. You’re awesome.

Carolyn Haack | 1/16/2009, 3:47 pm EST

I love anything Neil Young puts out. He is so on top of what is current. And he is so on top of what is truth.

bunnerabb | 1/16/2009, 8:58 pm EST

Remember when a lot of brilliant music came about because artists took stock of their POV and their history and the music that they owned and said what they had to say, without pretense?

So does Neil Young.

Keep on ROCKIN"""" | 1/16/2009, 10:33 pm EST

That’s right NEIL YOUNG IS JUST NEIL YOUNG !!!! who cares what Parrish thinks anyway. Neil will keep telling the US govt just what he thinks of their greed AND I WILL keep listening like so many others. Neil young is the shit! always has been and always will be. Thank you Neil Young. Telling the truth IS a revolutionary act! AND someone needs to take a stand against the hate and greed of the US government….before its too late.

mike snider | 1/17/2009, 1:43 am EST

thank you jim walberg. neil young is my reason to live. can’t wait for the archives.

Cooler | 1/17/2009, 4:58 am EST

JUST GIVE ME SOME TRUTH NOW!

Hoonda | 1/17/2009, 10:25 am EST

Right on!!!!

Hairy Carrion | 1/17/2009, 10:26 am EST

Fucking hilarious! Too bad the metaphors (visual and otherwise) were lost on the critic. But I guess that’s just age or lack of education. Neil Young is not for those who can’t read and write… a talent that is often lost in the LCD generation.

jaw69 | 1/17/2009, 1:07 pm EST

Neil— ROCK ON,MAN….
“Truth”—keep tell’in..”IT” like it really is!!!! I’m glad that your still around to keep on–keep’in on!!!

“Just give us the old stuff-your new stuff sucks! Who gives a shit about your views (another Jackson Browne)”

You liked all of that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young stuff because it didn’t have political overtones, huh? Turn your Alan Jackson records back on, and leave the rock and roll to people who can stick it to assholes like Bush.

Brad | 1/17/2009, 5:41 pm EST

Keep on Rocking till the power goes out…

mike anderson | 1/18/2009, 2:00 am EST

Thanks to Neil Young I’m still rockin n’ the free world.

rob . ireland | 1/18/2009, 5:56 am EST

dont stop Neil, saw you at malahide, awsome. mat parrish, if you dont like it go and listen to girls aloud or something. Chrome dreams 2 is classic N.Young. No stone should be left unturned on the hidden path to find truth and Neil is one of the few artists of his era still rocking better than modern bands. Remember he never sold out or ‘retired’ he just kept doing what he feels is right.
Thanks Neil.
Rob

Maurice Skogen | 1/18/2009, 11:08 am EST

Zak Claxton | 2/17/2009, 6:40 pm EST

I really, really love this song. While everyone’s trying to pull him backwards (where’s the Archives! Wah!), he’s still looking forward, and is timely and funny and rocking as ever.

Stuart Taylor | 3/3/2009, 4:29 am EST

I love Neil Young but he must take an anti corporate stance against the price of his concert tickets and the proposed price of the Archives.

mittster | 3/23/2009, 8:40 pm EST

Neil you’re the shit man,and have been since day one.these young dudes are full of shit. Rock on,Dude. I love you man.

CRAZYHOUSE | 4/15/2009, 11:30 am EST

THANK YOU NEIL!

May you stay, FOREVER YOUNG!

Stoney | 4/15/2009, 1:22 pm EST

Neil is a one of a kind artist. He is current and relivant. He is old school as well, pumping out material almost every year like clockwork. Todays young artists release new material every three or four years which is nothing but lazy.If Neil went that long without a release we could assume that he was dead.Keep on rockin’ Neil you are an inspiation.
