Today marks the official 50th anniversary of Motown Records, and members of some of the label’s most famous acts were on hand in the Motor City to help kick off what will be a year-long celebration for the famed label. The Four Tops’ Abdul “Duke” Fakir and members of the Miracles, Martha & the Vandellas and Rare Earth will spend the week at the Motown Historical Museum, housed in the original Hitsville Headquarters. Plus, today was officially named Motown Day in the city of Detroit.

(Revisit the birth of Motown in our 1971 feature by Jon Landau, “The Motown Story.”)

It was 50 years ago that Motown founder Berry Gordy first borrowed $800 with the hopes of starting his own label and founded Tamla Records, which would be incorporated as Motown in 1970 and produce its first hit a year later. “Fifty years is a wonderful anniversary,” Fakir told Billboard.com. “You’ve got to give credit to the songs, but of course you’ve got to give credit to Berry Gordy for the vision. He had the whole vision, and he made it come true.” Berry will not be on hand for the festivities, but said in a statement, “Motown music was for everybody, and it grew out of love. It has spread around the world and has become part of the culture and consciousness in all seven continents, and it all started right here.”

To honor the anniversary, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will house the exhibition “Motown: The Sound of Young American Turns 50,” plus Gordy has a documentary about his famed label in the works, along with a Broadway musical and a Marvin Gaye exhibit. In all, it promises to be a busy year for Hitsville USA. As we get ready to partake in the celebration, we ask our readers to tell us their favorite Motown hits.

Can we celebrate Motown’s 50th by finally awarding Diana Ross a Lifetime Acheivement Award from Grammy? It’s a disgrace that she has never won a Grammy when other less talented singers have several. Her unique voice can evoke emotions other singers can only dream about. Let’s hope the Grammy organization will correct this injustice in 2009.

No offence to you Tony, as you are certainly entitled to your opinion my friend, and this is not directed at you.

But, Diana Ross does not deserve a lifetime achievement award at all. She screwed the Supremes (and literally Berry Gordy), put out some of the worst schlock as a solo artist (not with the Supremes), had the balls to do a fake Supremes reunion tour without Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong and call it the Supremes (the tours pre-mature cancellation says enough about that) and has been the meanest primadonna in music for 40 years now.

We are supped to award that kind of behavior? I don’t think so.

Fave Motown Tunes

I Want You Back – Jackson 5
Ain’t No Mountain High – Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell
Take Me In Your Arms – Kim Weston
Uptight – Stevie Wonder
Psychedelic Shack – The Temptations
Walk Away From Love – David Ruffin
Girl You Need A Change of Mind – Eddie Kendricks

The list is actually ENDLESS for me but these are in heavy rotation in my Ipod

I have to agree with Sam on the Lifetime Award for “Miss Ross”. She seldom – if ever – gives the appropriate props to Wilson and Ballard, the two women on whose backs, as it turns out, she was carried into the public eye, and ears. A lifetime award to The Supremes would certainly be in order – plus, would make better television if just to see Ross and Wilson (possibly) share the same stage to receive said award. (I doubt it.) I’m not denying that Ross can carry a tune, but her C+ of a voice has been overshadowed by an undeserved A+ of an ego for far too many years. Her ship has sailed, Tony. Call her “Miss Used-To-Be” and in the words of The Beatles – let it be.

Diana’s personal relationship with Mary Wilson notwithstanding; Diana’s lifetime achievement award is indeed deserved for her contribution to the music industry and her legend outside of the Supremes for the past 39 years! Miss Ross has had many #1 hits, broken musical records, house records and is an internationally reknowned artist. Her fame has eclisped the Supremes’. As far as chart success only Mariah Carey has had more #1s (including her hits witht he Supremes and duet with Lione Ritchie on Endless Love). 11 Grammy nominations, and her enduring legend is most certainly deserved.

When Tiny Tim get his award, “Miss Ross” can have hers. Sheesh! She couldn’t be more done.

It;s a terrible injustice to not
recognize Diana Ross after all these years. How many millions and millions of records has she sold all over the world, and not one GRAMMY win..Most artists today will never know a career of 40 plus years.C,Mon ” Lets do whats right” before it’s too late..

I wish we could bring back a MoTown Detroit or at least Detroit Area music production company – This might be the perfect year to do it! I heard a local Metro Det 17 yr old at a coffee house in Highland Mich and my God she can out sing the greats! I think it was a Zahdee’s or something like that on Mondays – early evening. We have great singers here but no Michigan opportunities – even though it all started here!

What a great idea! I also feel mention of Cindy Birdsong’s role is appropriate. Let’s not just focus on Diana. The Supremes were an awesome group!

My favorite Motown songs:
“A Breath Taking Guy” by The Supremes; “You Lost The Sweetest Boy” by Mary Wells; “The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage” by The Miracles;”Don’t Mess With Bill” by The Marvelettes; “Heat Wave” by Martha & The Vandellas & “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” (equally good versions) by Marvin Gaye/ Gladys Knight & The Pips.
