Weekend Rock List: Jam Bands

1/9/09, 4:55 pm EST

Photo: Slevert/Michael Ochs Archive/ Getty

For jam band fans, the past seven days were probably the best week since Phish played that Lemonwheel festival back in 1998: Trey Anastasio and gang, the Dead and the Allman Brothers all announced plans to tour in ‘09. To honor all of the proprietors of 30-minute songs, this week’s rock list is dedicated Jam Bands, those wonderful artists that give us a reason to quit our jobs, stop showering and caravan around in worship. If they jam, they count (thus, Sonic Youth qualifies — we’ll expect to see plenty of Disco Biscuits and moe. in the votes, too) So tell us your picks, and on Monday we’ll bust out Europe ‘72 while we count the votes. Until then, good luck in the Phish ticket lottery and check out our picks:

• The Grateful Dead
• The Allman Brothers
• Phish
• Sonic Youth
• My Morning Jacket

while Dave Matthews Band are not quite as ‘jammy’ as the Dead, Phish, and the Allman Brothers Band, it should be noted that the new DMB tour also goes on sale next week.

Between the Dead, Phish, Allman Brothers, and DMB all going on sale within a few weeks of each other, I think a lot of hippies are going to be broke by the end of this month!

Anything involving Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule, The Dead, new era Allman Brothers Band) should be on this list. The Grateful Dead are one of the most important bands of all time and it should be noted that they are far beyond any other band anyone could put on this list.

My Morning Jacket?!? Seriously I can’t understand why anyone considers them a jamband (even though I hate that label). Go listen to a Phish, String Cheese Incident, or Disco Biscuits NYE show and then tell me that My Morning Jacket (or Sonic Youth for that matter) are in the same genre.

STS9 – not sure if they qualify as a ‘jam band’ but they sure do know how to jam!!!

Alex Williams | 1/10/2009, 10:46 pm EST

For me, jambands are live bands that improvise every night and change the setlist every night, not bands who jam out there songs some times (DMB, MMJ, etc…).

1. Gratful Dead (invented the format)
2. Allman Brothers
3. Phish
4. Widespread Panic
5. moe.

IntelDiplo | 1/11/2009, 12:16 am EST

In response to Chris from the Half Hour Music Hour, have you seen the setlist from My Morning Jacket’s NYE show at MSG???? Or listened to the recording for that matter? That show was definitely a Phish-like NYE show…

Phish being back is more than enough. I’ve spent the last five years gradually becoming a die-hard, and now that they’re back I’m over joyed.

With The Dead, Allmans, Umphrey’s all on tour as well, I’m ready to take 4 months off.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Tea Leaf Green and Yonder Mountain hittin the NorthEast sometime soon.

And ChoooDude, I’m totally with you on an ARU tour…

I would rather listen to a band that does the most with the fewest notes (Ramones, Beach Boys, U2, Prince) than these “noodlers” who do almost nothing with the most notes.

wolf | 1/21/2009, 8:32 am EST

dude…. dmb? they are not a jam band. if they do jam a song out, or add a stop or something along thoes lines, they continue to do that same “jam” for every show of the tour. so….. dont put dave on this list?

Stan: So it seems like we have enough people now. When do we start taking down the corporations?

Hippie (takes a drag on his joint): Yeah man, the corporations. Right now they’re raping the world for money!

Kyle: Yeah, so, where are they? Let’s go get ‘em.

Hippie: Right now we’re proving we don’t need corporations. We don’t need money. This can become a commune where everyone just helps each other.

Hippie: Yeah, we’ll have one guy who like, who like, makes bread. A-and one guy who like, l-looks out for other people’s safety.

Stan: You mean like a baker and a cop?

Hippie: No no, can’t you imagine a place where people live together and like, provide services for each other in exchange for their services?

Kyle: Yeah, it’s called a town.

Nathan Alan Snyder, Jr. Esq. | 1/21/2009, 9:08 am EST

Does Sonic Youth really count? I don’t know if I would call avant garde noise improv “jamming.” And they certainly don’t jam on their non-improv songs… jamming means improv, which is nonexistent in their normal rock songs. But, like I said, I don’t think the horrible garbage they put out on their SYR “experimental” discs qualifies as “jamming.” Free jazz, experimental, avant modern whatever, but not jamming.

Wook #17 | 1/21/2009, 9:56 am EST

Widespread Panic is NOT a jamband. They are a southern rock band that occasionally jams out of one song and into another. In other words, they can jam but it isn’t their strength. Especially now with Herring on board. They always have been and always will be anchored in writing good songs. As well as covering other people’s songs. They are more a cover band than a jam band.

There is only one contemporary answer to this question now that Hampton has been scheduled. And that answer is PHISH.

katman | 1/21/2009, 10:28 am EST

damn you people ever hear of umphreys mcgee? probably one of the best jam bands of our time. they are the present and the future. phish at alpine june 20-21st gonna be sick.

Donny Wallace | 10/16/2009, 1:30 am EST

But Velvet, Beefheart and Can are always good choices. Zappa is too pretentious in a 1-D way and he is supposed to hold the record for underage girls anyway so you know isn’t that a bit hypocritical? Also in their earliest days the Pink Floyd guys did some great jams and let’s not forget Flatt and Scruggs.

Donny Wallace | 10/16/2009, 1:57 am EST

But what are the best Jam recordings:
1) A Love Supreme
2) Albert Ayler Live at the Greenwich Village
3) A Kind of Blue
4) Velvet Underground & Nico
5) Giant Steps
Honorable Mention: Apple Jam bonus record
And every once and a while Mingus made some great jams….

Donny Wallace | 10/16/2009, 2:02 am EST

Somehow the Donny forgot the Who- Live at Leeds- Deluxe edition which should be in all Jam band collections.
