New “American Idol” Judge Kara DioGuardi Talks Season 8: “The Males Were The Strongest”

As we inch towards next week’s premiere of American Idol, this season’s wild card, fourth judge Kara DioGuardi, held a phone conference to give some hints about the new season’s contestants, discuss her role on the show and talk about how she fits in with her fellow judges, specifically Simon Cowell. DioGuardi was pretty tight-lipped about contestants, but as the show heads to Hollywood Week, she admits, “The males were the strongest.” “In the competition, there were five to 10 men who I think were great,” DioGuardi said, “but there were one or two females that I’m excited about as well.” Why is she so high on the guys? “There’s a uniqueness to some of the male contestants, in terms of their voices and their song selection and what the sound of the records would be.”

As for what she brings to the judging table, DioGuardi said that her experience as a songwriter and producer, as well as her work with artists like Christina Aguilera, Pink and Celine Dion, make her a unique voice. Plus, she has a “very close relationship” with first Idol Kelly Clarkson, for whom she co-wrote six songs for her breakout Breakaway, so DioGuardi knows what it takes to be an American Idol.

Still, she won’t be a harsh critic in the vein of Simon Cowell, as she believes in “second chances.” With this year’s new format of four judges, a two-to-two tie will result in Cowell ultimately becoming the decision maker in some cases. While Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson were noted as the lenient pair on Idol, DioGuardi and her higher expectations were expected to give Cowell a greater hand in who decides who makes it to Hollywood. “A few times, it came down to [Abdul and Jackson] would say ‘yes,’ and I knew Simon would say ‘no.’ So I had to make the critical decision there of whether I’m going to give them another shot or not,” DioGuardi says. “And that was tough.” Still, DioGuardi pledges that this year’s panel will have more “girl power.”

It also took Kara some time to settle into her judging spot because, “I would talk over people a lot, because I didn’t know when to talk.” Still, DioGuardi felt like she “hit the lotto” when she was asked to be a judge this season. Even with her Idol obligations, DioGuardi promises to be busy as a Seacrest these next few months, as she’s still writing and producing whenever she gets a chance. In fact, DioGuardi said she hadn’t slept in 48 hours because she just got back from Hawaii, where she was helping Colbie Caillat work on her second album. And the tip for getting on DioGuardi’s good side: “I love when people play instruments. It adds another component to their artistry.”

PAULA IS THE BEST. Kara seems ok but the main reason to watch this show is Paula Abdul, always has been, always will be. And you know why? Because TV would be so freakin boring without her!

Kara DioGuardi is kind of like the Sarah Palin of American Idol. A complete moron that nobody has ever heard of, all of the sudden thrown into the national spotlight, but will ultimately be a total failure.

I admit, I used to enjoy American Idol as a guilty pleasure, but this show has seriously jumped the shark.

funny you say no one has ever heard of her or sarah palin.. hmm.. you seem very uneducated about politics & MUSIC.. yeah right your opinion should really be listened to…

I can’t believe people are dissing Kara DioGuardi for being a nobody! She is a singer, songwriter, and producer of pop music. She is also a VP at Warner Bros records. She has written songs for Enrique Iglesias, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Pink, Faith Hill, Britney Spears, the Jonas Brothers, Leona Lewis, and Ashlee Simpson, and Idols Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, McPhee, Bo Bice and David Archuleta. She produced David Archuleta’s hit single Crush, and she wrote and duets on his album track To Be With You. So I think she has pretty good credentials for judging Idols. I look forward to seeing her judge.

Idol is a train wreck show we all admitt to loving. We don’t watch it to see someone good we watch it to see someone bad so we can be entertained, The contestants are ridiculed for the sake of GOOD tv and we buy into it! Why?
Plus the band with that ricky minor idiot..sounds like bad keroke and I have heard them make more mistakes than the contestants! I think the new judge Kara is a nice addition and brings a fresh take on things. She and Randy are really the only ones with any real musical talent on that pannel. lol

for you people who say she is a NOBODY i suggest you do your research. Kara knows what she is talking about, how dare you compare her to Sarah Palin.

Kara is great, well presented, well spoken and a very good judge. South African

Kara does not fit in and the show was better without her. She copies what the other judges say, and says silly things.

she makes a lot of sense… i love kara

Zac | 4/4/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Kara sucks!!!!! Three judges work ok before they don’t need a dud like Kara. Drop her PLEASE!!!!!

Cathy | 4/28/2009, 10:18 pm EST

Kara is another waste of space and time on Idol. As a matter of fact it would be interesting to see Idol with NO JUDGES at all. It’s getting real tiresome listening to them try to out-judge each other and listen to their nonsense. “Dog” “Dude” “That was da bomb”. Please. Lose ALL the judges except Simon – the only one with any common sense and the only one who says it like it is. This may save Idol for another season or two.
