Super Bowl, Super Gig: How the Big Game Can Boost Springsteen’s Sales

1/8/09, 10:45 am EST

When Bruce Springsteen plays the Super Bowl halftime show on February 1st, it will be for the biggest audience of his career: Last year, 148.3 million Americans watched Superbowl XLII, more than the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony and the Academy Awards combined. Which should mean good things for Springsteen’s new Working on a Dream and 2009 tour (for the story behind the making of the album, check the issue of Rolling Stone that hits newsstands this week). In the week after last year’s Tom Petty performance, “Free Fallin’” sold 63,000 digital copies — and his tour, which kicked off that spring, went on to become one of the year’s biggest. In 2006, sales of the Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang album shot up 34 percent the week after the Bowl.

So why Bruce? “We have a lot of fans in common,” says NFL exec Charles Coplin. “And he performs so well on a large scale that we always felt that it was a good fit.” One thing neither party will discuss is what songs Springsteen will play. Prince performed a medley of hits (including a Foo Fighters cover) in 2007, and the Stones played a new song plus two classic cuts. “The goal of the Super Bowl thing,” says a source in Springsteen’s camp, “is to see how much fun he can get into those 12 minutes.”

well, it’s a safe bet that no wardrobe malfunctions will take place.. rock n roll oldies will continue to dominate the superbowl from now on..

Jungleland2 | 1/8/2009, 3:34 pm EST

This year again the halftime will be much better than the game.

How is Bruce “Oldies” if he is still putting out some of his best work (and selling out shows and #1 records)

My guess is that Bruce will do

Nice short set list, but no way The Boss could fit more than three of those in a 12 minute slot–and they would have to be significantly shortened at that.

CosmoNYC | 1/8/2009, 4:35 pm EST

“This year again the halftime will be much better than the game. ”

Umm, Jungleland2, did you notice that last year’s super bowl was one of the best in the history of the game? The Giants defeated the Patriots, if you haven’t heard!

lol | 1/8/2009, 5:23 pm EST

you never know. some people perform with faster tempo on stage than on cd

GET READY FOR THE LAST E-STREET TOUR EVER! PATTI IS BUSY WITH THE KIDS, HAVE YOU SEEN CLARENCE TRY TO WALK LATELY? MAX IS GOING TO CALIFORNIA FOR THE CONAN SHOW, NILS JUST HAD A DOUBLE HIP REPLACEMENT, AND DANNY DIED.

brucefan | 1/8/2009, 9:41 pm EST

First of all…it will be hard for bruce to play even 1 song in 12 minutes….he adds a lot of stuff to his songs on stage. And for LWG you are as dumb as a fence post. They will keep touring for a long time. Clarence can walk fine i have seen concerts on the magic tour, sure he sat down but he is 67, if u think max would pick conan over bruce you are an idiot. He has always been allowed to leave for a tour. Nils has already said that he is ready and willing to tour again. And sure patty is ok but they don’t really need her. And we all miss Danny but they will tour in his memory.

GLORY DAYS | 1/8/2009, 10:13 pm EST

WOW! dumb as a fence post, then why would the next tour as reported on backstreets.com only last 50-60 shows and feature a whole album to reflect on the past. brucefan let the band end while on top. All good things must come to an end and this band is at it’s peak and would be a perfect ending to a story book band.

Tom in vegas | 1/8/2009, 10:19 pm EST

To brucefan, To say that Max won’t choose Conan over Bruce, YOU are crazy. Conan is a full time gig, with Bruce, he is at ( pardon the pun ) The Boss’ whim. As far as the network always letting him go for a tour, that was at 12:30, now it will be the Tonight show, a different story there. I guess we could bring back Clarence (Boom) Carter, or Vini (Mad Dog) Lopez. Hell that’s who was drumming when I started listening to Bruce!

Tom in vegas | 1/8/2009, 10:21 pm EST

BTW – Super Bowl playlist, Workin’ On A Dream, The Rising, and Born To Run, in that order

DAvid S. | 1/8/2009, 10:44 pm EST

Glory Days
Badlands
Working on a Dream
Born to Run

Not necessarily in that order.

for those about to rock | 1/8/2009, 10:48 pm EST

Should of had ACDC rock the super bowl.

Jbro | 1/9/2009, 8:22 am EST

I think the set will depend on if the Giants are in the Super Bowl or not. It won’t be NYC Serenade, but Rosie might come out with the “Swamps of Jersey” reference.

Jbro | 1/9/2009, 8:24 am EST

Maybe Devil in a Blue Dress. If the Giants get there.

harpo | 1/9/2009, 12:01 pm EST

Do you think he will do that new song…”Working on Some Kool-Aid”??

Halftime belongs to Prince! | 1/9/2009, 1:50 pm EST

Prince’s performance was praised as perhaps the best halftime show ever, so let’s see, may be The Boss can top it…may be.

PETTY WAS THE BEST | 1/9/2009, 2:43 pm EST

sounds like brucefan has some issues.

Ari | 1/9/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Should have been AC/DC. They could have done ‘Hells’ Bells’ ‘For Those About to Rock’ and ‘Highway to Hell’. That would have been a fun halftime! This American jingoism sucks specially when the acts are boring, like Bruce.

PimpsmainProphet | 1/9/2009, 4:41 pm EST

Born to Run
Lucky Day
glory Days or DiTD or American Land

brucefan | 1/9/2009, 6:38 pm EST

For Glory Days and Tom in Vegas, you are still and idiot if you think max would still pick conan over bruce. Conan is just a job for max music is his passion. And he has stated that before. And i no the tour is 50, 60 shows that is because they toured for pretty much a year only about 5 months ago. They aren’t going to do another year long tour right away. Also if you started listening to those drummers you should know is name is Ernest “Boom” Carter. And Bruce has stated himself that he never wants to quit making music and touring. So if he says he’s done, i will accept that but he said i’ll make music and tour until you don’t see me anymore.

superbowlbrucefan | 1/9/2009, 11:58 pm EST

for a fun show:
We’re Havin a Party (SSide Johnny song)and Clarence solo into….a rowdy American Land…into Born To Run

Mary Ishkabibbell,Westport, CT | 1/10/2009, 12:16 am EST

I would like to say that AC/DC would have been the right choice, not Brewce Springsteen

bobby | 1/10/2009, 9:58 am EST

ac/dc is good but bruce is the better choice. there is not alot put into ac/dc songs, they all sound the same but they are still one of the best along with bruce.

NotMozart | 1/10/2009, 2:35 pm EST

I like SA 10’s list:

Glory Days
Working On a Dream
Born to Run

A couple concise crowd-pleasers and a new song to promote the new album which will have just come out before the Super Bowl. Of course there’s more on my wishlist, but I’d bet that these are what get played.

NotMozart | 1/10/2009, 2:38 pm EST

… and yes, Prince friggin’ rocked, the Heartbreakers rocked, and Bruce WILL rock.

bruce rocks | 1/10/2009, 11:32 pm EST

3 favorites of the boss is impossible. Have it in 12 minutes is miracle. Bruce and the band are the reason we have brotherhood. Been a fan since 1975 the boss is great with or without the E street. Racing In The Streets, Waiting on a Sunny day, spirit in the night

Super bowl choice | 1/11/2009, 8:44 pm EST

Yes I agree Springsteen was a good choice, but not the best. ACDC would of rocked the Super Bowl.
Yes the Band is almost finished they are all getting old and don’t need this anymore. Springsteen will continue to tour solo or with others. Good night and farewell to the E-street band after thier next tour. It was a great run ladies and gentlemen. Angry brucefan do not waste your time to respond to me. I will submit my post and not return

The Rising
and something new from his album

madmilker | 1/12/2009, 9:31 am EST

Since he sold his soul to tat company with the star in the name…
the first song will be “this bucket has a hole in it” followed by “Don’t Fence Me In” and lets not forget… “Always” and “To Each His Own.”

mynameisearl | 1/12/2009, 9:57 am EST

the posts concerning the set lists range from histerical funny to the absurd.
the ghost of tom joad, please.
could you pick another slower, darker, introspective song to totally drown out any superbowl spirit ?
the set will be short, possibly 12 minutes.
a good medley of commercial and recognizable radio hits will be featured.
don’t hold your breath for “cover me”.

thedetoxg | 1/12/2009, 10:36 am EST

fuck bruce springsteen as halftime show, im tired of these fucking show is the same every year its slow and always mellow, how bout metallica,or at least something a little more edgier than the new jersey soul searcher i going to fall asleep…… BORING

R Ferrante | 1/12/2009, 1:21 pm EST

You know what? I’m sick and tired of reading comments from people who can’t even write English properly (I won’t even go into the spelling!) Get some education and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be able to understand what the Boss is singing about!

Ed | 1/12/2009, 3:18 pm EST

You can hear AC/DC at ANY NFL game over the loudspeaker. Hell’ Bells is an NFL staple!
I’m looking forward to the Boss coming to rock Tampa no matter who is in the Super Bowl. B-R-U-C-E!!

AC/DC? METALLICA? What about their music says “AMERICA”? The SuperBowl is nothing but a big beer commercial! Go back to Reagan who thought that Born in the USA was an expression of patriotism and not a scathing indictment of our treatment of VietNam Vets!

lizypups | 1/13/2009, 11:32 am EST

BRUCE is the BOSS. We just saw him live, and there is NO ONE compared to him. He is an American poet, a Patriot and a true artist. Emotional and with deep feeling – he loves this Country and will ROCK THE SUPER BOWL. Read his lyrics…that is how you know him. The title’s of his songs don’t always reflect his meaning. READ the lyrics.

R Ferrante | 1/16/2009, 9:19 am EST

You go, Lizypups! If more people would take the time to really pay attention to his lyrics, maybe they’d get the idea! Bruce tells it like it is and, although some may not want to hear it, he’s not afraid to take the “unpopular” stand. (41 Shots (American Skin)

Anonymous | 1/18/2009, 10:11 am EST

Bruce is lame.

GrowlingTiger | 1/29/2009, 3:57 pm EST

Not so “super” actually on all fronts. The only reason I “might” have the TV on is to watch the commercials……yawn.

unacat | 1/30/2009, 9:04 pm EST

Sold out to Walmart. Go away, boss.

57ESQUIRE | 1/31/2009, 3:14 am EST

Yes I’m a HUGE Fan of BRUCE & The E-STREET BAND…Like anything in life U like him/them or NOT…Why bitch…As 4 the set-list the safest bet would be 2 play the “marketing” game…I’ll be SURPRISED if he pulls out any Great Gem(s)

rushmore | 1/31/2009, 5:59 am EST

I like notmozart’s picks. Not in that order, Born to Run will be the first played – has to grab 150 million and that’s the most recognizable – needs his latest – Working On A Dream(appropo for the times) – and Glory Days works well with the sports crowd.

mikethekiwi | 1/31/2009, 8:10 pm EST

Some of you americans are such dicks,

You honk about having somebody like Springsteen front the super bowl show your biggest sporting event of the year, and then you scream to have somebody like AC/DC who are from Australia with a Scottish frontman, Angus young is about 62 Malcolm is older than that and they hant released a decent album since Back in Black,Someone even said they should be playing highway to hell, that can only really be sung by one person, Bon Scott, so get a grip on reality. all their music sounds the same now anyway. Bruce proved how diverse and talented he was when he released his first album and he has just much innovation imagination and fire today as he did in 1972, AC/DC were firmly estblished in Australia in 1972 so dont play the aged rocker card on Springsteen, you dicks.

kiktback03 | 1/31/2009, 9:13 pm EST

BRUUUCE! He is the Boss. He will Rock! If you’ve never seen him, look out! Him & the boys are gonna prove themselves.Twelve minutes aint long enuf, but, hold on to ur seats. Just Wait & see…

scoups200 | 2/1/2009, 8:18 pm EST

What a pathetic performance by this has been.

fan | 2/4/2009, 3:28 am EST

Bruce and the band rocked and I enjoyed watching them. Especially Glory Days! There’s no good reason that talented all-American musicians should be discarded just because they have been around longer than 15 minutes- being fickle like that is what’s truly lame.
