Empire of the Sun’s Electro-Pop Is Huge in Australia and Heading Your Way

1/8/09, 12:15 pm EST

Our intrepid Australian correspondent Pete Maiden just returned from a voyage to his homeland and reports that this is the biggest thing on the other side of the globe: an insanely catchy electro-pop tune by Empire of the Sun called “Walking on a Dream.” The group — Luke Steele of indie-pop band the Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore of electro act Pnau — have a fantasy-rock aesthetic going on that rivals MGMT’s “Electric Feel” clip and our favorite Eighties revivalist, Chris Dane Owens of “Shine on Me” fame. The song (which is already the soundtrack to Sydney’s summer — yes, be jealous, it’s the summer there) was blaring from every bar and pop-radio station on repeat, much like Sneaky Soundsystem were in 2007.

In reference to their epic look, the pair recently told the BBC, “We are superheroes. We are Emperor Steele and Lord Littlemore.” We like them already! The group took their name from the JG Ballard novel Steven Spielberg brought to the big screen in 1987 and recorded their debut album Walking on a Dream over two years in Sydney. Steele, who describes the album as “a spiritual road movie,” adds “We’ve done the band thing, which is great, but we wanted it to be a lot more epic and theatrical.”

“We want to start something a bit bigger than what bands have been for the past 20 years,” he says. “We want to bring entertainment and colour and positivity and melody back into it.”

They’re a big deal over the blogosphere too. Everybody loves them. Cannot wait for the US release of Walking on a Dream.

who decided this was cool? “hey, let’s create a 4 bar music sample, loop it 100 times and sing some stupid high pitch lyrics over it!”

give me a break people… this would be a great song for a GEICO commercial though.

Ummm… I think Pete is getting a bit excited. That or this is a purely PR driven article because I live in Melbourne, Australia and am into the music scene here and can honestly say I’ve never even heard this song. Bad attempt to be Cut Copy, Presets, MGMT (and 1000 other electro bands) if you ask me.

I’m in the eastern suburbs of melbourne and its playing all over the place – I first noticed ir a chaddie shopping centre (our biggest shopping centre). The album was sold out at the 2 stores I tried to buy it from (including Borders).
This is amazing – its very dreamy and a little spiritual!

So what if it is a simple loop. It sounds great music doesn’t have to be complex to sound good.

It’s not bad, it’s better than have the shit coming out of the US

“It’s not bad, it’s better than have the shit coming out of the US”

Tigercity out of NYC has a similar style but is better and living in the 21st century.

Like mentioned in the article, it`s a catchy, positive, dreamy style song. I`m from Melbourne, AUS. and I like it. Congratulations to the band for doing so well, they`d be praised in Japan not only for the music but as they mentioned, they are into entertainment which is definately a great thing and also missing from a lot of bands today.
As for people from Melbourne dissin the song, it`s completely expected. Nearly 90% of Melbourne people think they`re too cool for school and diss anything that`s too commercial or liked by people they don`t like. Don`t get me wrong, it`s a beautiful city, heading a great direction but the people still need to open up to each other.

their album is amazing i recommend listening to it through headphones with your eyes closed and you’ll know what i mean. it seriously blows me away how much talent has gone into this record with the eery unique voice of steele and the freaky production skills of littlemore. don’t listen to age if he thinks he is ‘in the music scene’ and hasn’t heard of empire of the sun then he’s got no idea. what a wanker

dj bj's freeway | 1/18/2009, 9:43 pm EST

roll a joint sit back and take it in doesnt get much better.

ug | 1/21/2009, 5:53 pm EST

this is thousands time better than cut copy.

ben | 1/22/2009, 2:09 am EST

These guys are the coolest new gig to come out of 2008. Luke Steele has an awesome voice and the lyrics rock.
And for people like “Age” who think their too cool, feel free to disappear back to your sheltered hideout.

Listening to this on repeat! PS I’m a little in love with the one in the military jacket

Joe | 1/30/2009, 7:04 am EST

Kate | 2/7/2009, 3:35 am EST

i wish people would stop comparing them to MGMT. they sound nothing alike, and MGMT are so much better.

Sam | 3/1/2009, 11:30 pm EST

Walking on a Dream is Awesome! I’ve played it over 100 times on iTunes. I think it’s great they aspire to bring melodic inspiration back into popular music. We need more of it.

kenau | 3/4/2009, 7:53 am EST

Good album. They are not a copycat of MGMT. You can definitely hear inspiration from Pnau in the band, who were around long before MGMT’s popularity. As I recall, MGMT and Empire of the Sun started getting radioplay here in Aus about the same time. It is very radio friendly but an enjoyable album to listen and chill to. I am so glad that electropop and electrorock have taken over the cruddy stuff from the early 00s.

nonameface | 4/20/2009, 9:30 pm EST

for those putting down australian music and or comparing it to MGMT, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Mill | 5/14/2009, 3:50 pm EST

omg this is the worst music i’ve ever heard. EOTS are like MGMT for disney or something….such a rip off and MGT are wayyy better.

Mill | 5/14/2009, 3:53 pm EST

*MGMT

Mr Posh | 5/16/2009, 10:41 am EST

Listen to ‘We Are the People’.

Astonishing.

None | 5/24/2009, 4:03 am EST

Mgmt sucks

Aang | 5/30/2009, 7:49 am EST

We Are The People is going to be big worldwide

chickenbutt | 6/13/2009, 1:02 pm EST

aight, obviously no one really listened to Empire of the Sun or MGMT because the only similarity is their vocals. their music is COMPLETELY different, i barely see a comparison. EOTS is much more marketable because their sound is less abrasive. yes, their music is less deep than most but it’s pop, they’re not trying to pretend to be anything other than that. we don’t need to be elitists all the time. we should enjoy some chill tunes and relax, EOTS is just that!

mollyb | 7/1/2009, 4:29 pm EST

TreasureFingers (an Atlanta-based DJ) has a pretty fun remix of Walking on a Dream. Check it out.

GR | 8/1/2009, 2:07 am EST

If your taste sucks as bad as you look (Mill). Then shut the the f*** up!!!!!!

f***thehaters | 9/19/2009, 2:30 am EST

I think this band is great, I do agree that they sound a bit like MGMT, but I really like both groups.

Shlomo | 9/20/2009, 5:16 pm EST

Empire of the sun cannot REALLY be compared to anyone at the moment. They are fantastic. Just listen to Emperor Steele’s voice, the way he sings and acts in video clips. Its amazing. I havent seen this sort of charisma in an artist since the mid 1980s.
