Nine Inch Nails’ “Ghosts” Tops Amazon MP3 Sales Chart Despite Being Given Away For Free

Despite being partially offered as a free download in March 2008, Nine Inch Nails’ instrumental Ghosts I-IV still became the Amazon MP3 Store’s Bestselling Album of 2008, beating out Coldplay’s Viva La Vida and Death Cub for Cutie’s Narrow Stairs. The achievement is symbolic on two fronts: First, it proves — along with Radiohead’s chart-topping success of the physical release of In Rainbows — that music fans are willing to support artists even if their music is offered up at no cost. Second, it’s more evidence that Nine Inch Nails truly has one of the most rabid fanbases on the planet. (In Rainbows, for what it’s worth, ranked Number 11 on the Amazon chart.)

Even though it was available for free, Ghosts I-IV was a good value even when sold on Amazon: the 36-track album went for $5. Multiple purchasing options were available when Trent Reznor first announced the record’s self-release, and after only a week Reznor revealed he made already made $1.6 million from the album. Ghosts was the first LP Reznor released after his exile from Interscope Records after a long, tumultuous relationship.

Of course, Reznor constantly rewards his fanbase for their support: He practically gave away The Slip in May, and he’s currently promising fans on his Website that “a gift” is on the way. Ghosts was released under a Creative Commons license, which allows fans to remix and share the songs as long as it was for non-commercial use and they credited the original authors of the work.

It was only the ‘Ghosts I’ section that was offered for free ie. the first 8 tracks.

I think what’s more remarkable is that an instrumental ambient album was the best-selling pop album.

On NIN website, Ghosts I was offered for free only, right. BUT the hole album is licenced with the Creative Commons licence mentioned. That means the whole album can legally downloaded from Internet where it is offered free (P2P included).

Reznor himself also put the album as torrent on Pirate Bay.

If you think that’s cool, check out what the “gift” turned out to be – 450 GB of excellent quality high-definition footage of three full shows from multiple camera angles from a few weeks ago. All raw and unedited so that “a few enterprising fans” can put together their own DVD.

Why? Because Interscope would not allow Trent the rights to legitimately film what would have been an incredible live concert movie to release to theaters, and some record of this amazing show needed to be preserved.

you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. 2009 will make you all shit your pants when you realize what’s coming from the nin community in the coming months. you can keep your shitty pop music and bullshit payola charts – real talent will shine through in the end.

Yes, all 36 tracks were given away free, but NIN did not make it obvious or easy to get all 36 tracks. Rather, they offered a free download of the first 9 tracks on their website. A *LOT* of people didn’t know the other 27 tracks were also free, and wouldn’t know where or how to get them even if they did know. This story should at least point out the confusion that NIN (apparently intentionally) created among the fans. So, the title “Ghosts Tops Amazon MP3 sales chart despite being given away for free” is misleading. Also, it’s worth noting that NIN ran all their $5 sales through Amazon’s MP3 service – which helped them top the charts (all their competitors had their sales split up among CD and MP3 sales and multiple stores).
