Ron Asheton, guitarist and founding member of the Stooges, was reportedly found dead at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan this morning. He was 60. Official cause of death has not yet been announced but initial indications suggest Asheton had a heart attack. Police entered Asheton’s home and discovered his body on a couch after his personal assistant was unable to reach the rocker for days. Detective Bill Stanford told Michigan Live it appeared Asheton passed away several days ago.

As the guitarist for the Stooges, Asheton crafted some of rock’s most memorable riffs, including “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “No Fun” and “TV Eye.” Guitarist Asheton, along with his brother Scott, Iggy Pop and original bassist Dave Alexander formed the Stooges in Detroit in 1967. The original lineup released two albums, The Stooges and Fun House, before Ron Asheton shifted over to bass guitar for 1973’s Raw Power. All three LPs made Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, ranking at Number 185, 191 and 125 respectively. Asheton was also Number 29 on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

After the Stooges initially split, Asheton went on to play with the New Order (not the U.K. one), Destroy All Monsters, New Race and the Wylde Ratttz, a supergroup featuring Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Mudhoney’s Mark Arm, Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis and Mike Watt, who would eventually become Asheton’s bandmate when the Stooges reunited in 2003. For the band’s comeback album, 2007’s The Weirdness, Asheton was once again in his rightful place onstage as the Stooges’ guitarist as Watt picked up bass duties. Last year the Stooges played as Madonna was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; this year, the band was nominated for their own induction. Check back later in the day for more on Asheton’s death and his immeasurable impact on rock music.

Tommy Jay | 1/6/2009, 10:26 am EST

My heart just sank to my toes. The greatest guitarist for the greatest band gone forever.

I’m just glad the Stooges were able to successfully reunite so Ron and his brother could get some of their just due. They were the best!

Swingline | 1/6/2009, 10:50 am EST

R.I.P. Ron

The musical dynamite that you and the Stooges created will live on forever.

No fun, my babe, no fun…

stuporfly | 1/6/2009, 10:56 am EST

I’m grateful I had the chance to see the Stooges after they reunited.

Safe journey, Ron…

LoveTheSun | 1/6/2009, 11:07 am EST

RIP,one of my favourite guitarists of all time. The rawness and ferocity of his playing will remain unmatched till the end of the guitar.

Josh | 1/6/2009, 11:11 am EST

I am so glad I was able to see J Mascis and Mike Watt play with Ron at the Black Cat a few years back. They rocked Stooges tunes during an hour and a half second set that blew away the 30 or so peeps that trudged through the snow to see some real rock and roll. R.I.P. Ron. You will be missed but never forgotten.

kliffee | 1/6/2009, 11:28 am EST

True bummer. Great riffs never die.

Heathen2002 | 1/6/2009, 11:34 am EST

This is really sad news. Funhouse is one of my favorite albums. Rest in peace my friend.

RTickle | 1/6/2009, 11:34 am EST

I sure hope he passed a happier person then the man I met when he was with Niagra in a band called Dark Carnival or something…
Hand Over Head opened at the ARK in Ann Arbor.
Ron was bluer than a folkie on downers at a heavy metal reunion show of broke-neck headbangers.
Across the Universe, indeed…
1969 through 2009.

Craig Hlavaty | 1/6/2009, 11:37 am EST

The Stooges are my Beatles.

This sucks so bad.

Let’s hope the Rock Hall let’s them in now.

eli | 1/6/2009, 11:42 am EST

Thanks for the great tunes. You and your band gave birth to something really inspired and unique. Thanks again.

Colin Clary | 1/6/2009, 11:43 am EST

Awwww. I know what I’m gonna listen to tonight – TV Eye! Sorry to hear of his passing – sad news.

Travis | 1/6/2009, 11:48 am EST

I am shocked with the death of Ron. He was a punk icon and I was lucky to see him at the Virgin Mobile Music Festival last summer. RIP Ron!

Aaron Perkins | 1/6/2009, 11:50 am EST

Man what a bummer.. A great band losing a key member sucks. He was a great guitar player. Im glad they were to make one last record. R.I.P Ron.

SkydMark | 1/6/2009, 11:55 am EST

I was a JR.@ RiverviewGardens H.S. in St.Louis in ‘67.When I got with my Friends, each brought an “Album of the Month”. No one had heard the ‘Stooges’ yet but I sure turned them on. A few of us are left; Sadly, another Memorial Service, Honoring another Rock Icon. What happened to the Music that had us all by the short “HAIRs”? Todays bands just don’t have “IT” in ‘em anymore. They could stand to _check-back_ & learn a lesson or three from that era! Thank-You for the Chance to “Tell ‘Em” __MarCarl So.__

BC | 1/6/2009, 11:56 am EST

At least I was fortunate enought to see them twice since 2003…at two great Michigan venues…Pine Knob and The Fox.

If you haven’t seen the Creem video Live in Detroit 2003..GET IT! Seeing the insanity as the crowd takes over the stage during No Fun makes it worth the price alone.

RIP Brother Ron

Designated Dale | 1/6/2009, 11:57 am EST

R.I.P. brother Ronnie. Give my Michigan regards to Rob Tyner & Fred “Sonic” Smith.

absolutely devastated.my band [ primal scream] had the honour of backing the re-united stooges in japan a few years ago. ron had a smile and genuine joi de vivre about him whenever i saw him and im glad the rock and roll game finally paid him back these last 5 years or so. a true icon, thanks for the guidance ron. mani, primal scream.

Joey | 1/6/2009, 12:30 pm EST

The Stooges “Funhouse” album was , and is, the blueprint for how Detroit rock is supposed to be played. R.I.P. Ron.

No fun, indeed.

White Rose Steve | 1/6/2009, 1:17 pm EST

The Stooges were heroes to us Michigan kids. They were one of the bands we could point to and say, “Look, they could do it, so can we.” I’ll miss Mr. Asheton.

diane pop..... | 1/6/2009, 1:29 pm EST

I am so sad… Iggy will be crushed….. love to the dum dum boys. xoxoxox.

James C. | 1/6/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Replying to “Josh” – I was at that Black Cat show, too! Def a low turnout (it was before Iggy got on board for the reunion, and I think J. was handling vocals?), but they seriously rocked. Ron came out afterwards, and shook hands with everyone, signed my shirt, and also said he had actually been born in D.C.! Wackapedia says otherwise…might have to investigate further. R.I.P. Ron – You gave rise to most music I now consider sacred.

Erik | 1/6/2009, 1:34 pm EST

we lost a legend

smitty | 1/6/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Sad news. Rock Action.

(By the way, it’s just like Rolling Stone to include their own “greatest whatever” rankings in an obituary. That’s an unfortunate editorial decision.)

r.d. | 1/6/2009, 2:04 pm EST

geniunely upset by this news. thank you Ron, your music honestly changed my life. Rest In Peace.

No Fun.

Stooges and the MC5 set the tone for punk. The Ramones and the Pistols and more carried it as a movement. Ron Asheton deserves his due. RIP in R n R Heaven…………

Hey Jeff,
A guy dies of an apparent heart attack at 60… SIXTY… and you’re blaming drug use? You’re a putz!

Anonymous | 1/6/2009, 2:58 pm EST

I hope you die Jeff!

Anonymous | 1/6/2009, 3:00 pm EST

a heart attack at 60 certainly CAN be related to years of substance abuse.

I’m not saying that’s what it was in this case, but its very possible.

R.I.P. Ron.

Bob | 1/6/2009, 3:16 pm EST

Last 2 Stooges shows (2005 and 2008) were hands down the best 2 concerts I’ve ever seen. Ron kicked ass.

Tom from Det. | 1/6/2009, 3:19 pm EST

Sad to hear Ron’s gone, far too soon!

Rest In Peace Ron, you and the Stooges changed my life, for the better.

Eric | 1/6/2009, 3:20 pm EST

What? Somebody from the 3 Stooges died? Which character did he play – Moe, Larry or Curly?

shane | 1/6/2009, 3:46 pm EST

Ronnie & The Stooges changed what I listened to, and more importantly how I listened to it. Ronnie was the guitarist that taught me my guitar is more than just an instrument but a weapon rather. Hometown hero is lost but for sure not forgotten!

jeffoy | 1/6/2009, 4:15 pm EST

we will miss you ron!!

mageeee | 1/6/2009, 4:31 pm EST

I knew Ron and the rest of ‘em when they lived at the Coronet up on Sunset. Jimmy was a mess, James was a pain, but Ron was a prince up there on the top floor. A sweet spirit. He was really there for me once upon a time when I needed a bit of kindness. RIP, Ron. See you in the next life.

wrecksracer | 1/6/2009, 4:33 pm EST

Easily my favorite electric guitarist. So sad to hear. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn’t deserve Ron Asheton or the Stooges.

Saw them when they played NY the first time at the World’s Fair Site (NYS pavilion)in NY in’69, been a rabid fan ever since.Had the pleasure of seeing the last time they played in NYC this summer as well. The first words I said to my wife of 25 years when I first saw her were “I Wanna be your Dog”. Enough said!

youd | 1/6/2009, 6:11 pm EST

Too bad the Stooges still are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (yet Madonna is – WTF)
also missing – The Cure, Devo, The Cars

speaking of the hall – when’s Jan Wenner going to have the ceremony in Cleveland, or are we just supposed to pick up the tab for the museum and not get any of the fun.

mike defendant | 1/6/2009, 6:12 pm EST

its a sad day in punk rock history!

rest in peace ron stooge!

Jim | 1/6/2009, 6:25 pm EST

Without a doubt the strangest thing in the world. Someone I work with randomly mentioned Iggy on Friday and wondered if he was still alive. I said yes, he is. It got me thinking that it had been a while since I broke out the Stooges, so I grabbed ‘Fun House’ and ripped it to my Ipod. Jammed to it all afternoon on Monday and couldn’t believe how good is still sounded. The timing could not have been more prophetic.

RIP Ron, and thank you for the incredible music. You’ll be sorely missed

Mark | 1/6/2009, 6:41 pm EST

Oh, and Jeff, just FYI, I had the opportunity to work with Ron on an occasion. Not only was he polite and cordial, but a genuine, kind human being. Sorry, but he wasn’t drugged up or any of that. Obviously, you have issues you need to resolve on your own… And don’t forget the razorblades when you take a bath tonight.

RevNateDowgg | 1/6/2009, 7:57 pm EST

Wow-another living legend gone. Rock n’ Roll heaven is getting full maybe one day they will all come back.-You will be missed Ron!

This is really terrible. I was sincerely shocked when I read this.

He was one of the greatest guitarists and worked magic with the Stooges. Goodbye Dum Dum Boy.

Torry | 1/7/2009, 12:11 am EST

Fuck the sappy bullshit. It sucks that Ron is gone. We all know that. I think the biggest thing we can do to honor him is skipping the “Rock and Roll Heaven” analogies, not whoring this out, and not name dropping him like a leeches. Can we at least do that ONCE?

revras | 1/7/2009, 1:38 am EST

Ron you rocked hard from 67 to 09. May you rock on forever. Rest in peace

damn | 1/7/2009, 1:14 pm EST

in honor of Ron’s death I am going to download all the stooges songs on bittorent and put them on my ipod. free of charge!

Eddie_K | 1/7/2009, 9:08 pm EST

I met him once at a Destroy All Monsters show back in the 80s. He was very kind, humble and didn’t subscribe to any of that “rockstar” b.s.

Steve Nelson | 1/8/2009, 5:23 pm EST

Rock has lost a true guitar legend. I too had the honor of meeting Mr Asheton and Niagra of the band “Destoy all Monsters”. They were the friendliest people. No attitude, we just sat and talked for hours. I made Ron piss himself when I asked what does Iggy eat for breakfast! I’m very saddened to hear this news. I actually won some tickets too see the Stooges at a filming they made at 20th century fox last year. I lost it completely when ” I wanna be your dog ” was played by the band. It was my mantra in my youth . It hurts when the people you admired SO much pass on..Very sad day for Rock. Mr Asheton will be very much missed. Condolences are in order very his bandmates, and to Iggy Pop..This must be hard to take,as I know they were the best of mates since the beginning. RIP dear man, you were on of the greatest, and THANK YOU ..It was an honor to meet you, and have the extreme pleasure of again having the honor and luck to listen to your and your bandmates music..

In appreciation
Steven Nelson

Ron was a special kind of person.
one who had a great heart and fun to be around. My memories of him from the late 60’s and 70’s and the old Grande Ballroom Days will warm my heart always. To see the Stooges back in the day… wow, you just carry it with you as a pivotal moment in time…Heaven is lucky to have you Ronnie.

Mark McVee | 1/18/2009, 8:46 pm EST

A tremendous and wonderful influence on us in Michigan. Guitarists will tell you his compositions are especially “fun” to play. He laid the foundation for us. Rock personified.

Stoogiee | 1/31/2009, 8:55 pm EST

The self titled album was my favorite because of Ron’s amazing catchy riffs. :(
RIP Ron , a lot of other rockers should be thankful to him and his influence.

Very sad news. I loved Ron’s guitar playing, but I also loved him as the park ranger in Gary Jones’ Mosquito. A total classic if you ask me. RIP Ron.
