Guitar Gods Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck Set to Share the Stage at Japan Concerts

Two former Yardbirds are set to share the stage: Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck have announced they’ll play two shows together at Saitama, Japan’s Super Arena, on February 21st and 22nd. The duo have performed together at album sessions, benefits and festivals in years past, but these concerts mark the first time the pair have ever shared the bill for major arena shows. How mighty are these two axmen? Clapton ranked Number Four on our list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and Beck came in Number 14. If by some chance you’ll find yourself in Japan for this epic exhibition of guitar gods (or you just happen to live in Japan), take note that tickets for these concerts go on sale January 17th.

Both guitarists have roots in the Yardbirds, that blues-tinged British band that also lists Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page among its famous alumni. After the Yardbirds’ hit “For Your Love,” Clapton exited the band in 1965 out of protest of the group’s move from the blues to a new pop sound. Clapton’s replacement, ironically enough, was Jeff Beck, who was fired from the band in 1968 before they ultimately disbanded. Jimmy Page formed a band in late 1968 called the new Yardbirds, but you more than likely know them by the name Led Zeppelin.

Of course, Clapton and Beck went on to have pretty huge post-Yardbirds careers as well: Clapton as a member of Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominoes and a successful solo career, while Beck fronted the Jeff Beck Group and also enjoyed a noteworthy solo run. And now, more than 40 years after the original Yardbirds disbanded, the two will finally be together on a stage in Japan.

Hey Guys, what about me? *flips hair around* I’m a good guitar player right? We can all just forget about “Your Body is a Wonderland.” I really can play guitar, I just want to sell some albums now, and I’ll play the blues (which is what I should be playing) sometime down the road in my career when I decide I don’t care what sells or what people like; just like Scott Weiland!

Heathen2002 | 1/5/2009, 10:25 pm EST

Love them both, but of course, Beck will wipe Clapton off the stage. God, I hope John Mayer doesn’t show up!

Rolling Stone needs to attempt to salvage it credibility with an admission as to just how lame the Top 100 Guitarist list is: Jeff Beck should be listed at either 1 or, 2 -he is clearly better than Hendrix now, but who knows what Jimi would have done given the opportunity-

But some of the other choices -Jerry Garcia -Keith Richards, Kirk Hammett, Kurt Cobain….or Duane Allman…..not to mention Eric yawnnnnn……. Clapton better than Jeff Beck? -thats just moronic and, idiotic -it really is stupid, and, an injustice- but then again, this is a list that includes Joan Jett and excludes J Macis-

Moonie | 1/7/2009, 7:46 am EST

In what universe is Jack White,John Fogerty, and Thurston Moore, a more influencial guitarist than Pete Townshend? Your magazine is bias crap!

PJs of Rock | 1/7/2009, 12:56 pm EST

russ joyner/kickin' kountry ba | 1/8/2009, 6:00 am EST

RS is really sucking these days.
Their list are freekin’ re-dick-u-lous! Kurt cant play…really…
Beck is and always will be better than Clapton. Top 5 besk geetarist
ever?
1-Page
2-Beck
3-Clapton
4 -Perry
5-Hendrix

russ joyner/kickin' kountry ba | 1/8/2009, 6:03 am EST

My mistake….number three was supposed to be Eddie Van Halen…
my bad

jeffreyjay | 1/8/2009, 12:03 pm EST

It’s nice to see that the little people have the common sense to recognize Jeff Beck’s greatness. He is truly the best electric guitarist alive.

gouge | 1/9/2009, 2:46 pm EST

jeffreyjay -you said it……and Beck has gotten even better over the last decade! -his right hand technique, the many facets to his playing…he is the finest electric guitar player -For those who havent seen him -do so when you have the opportunity. You won’t soon forget it-

Jeff Beck | 1/9/2009, 11:35 pm EST

Clapton is GOD and will be always better than ME!!

Ernik Clapton | 1/11/2009, 8:25 pm EST

My cousin influenced several generations pf guitar player, Beck influenced other player who, like him, can’t improvise. He makes nice noise with his guitar but when does he improvise?, never, he can’t. Him and Van Halen are the same.

Beck Fan | 1/12/2009, 5:38 pm EST

Nice to see he’s still playing live, leaving hope I might see him for a fifth time. Funny comment Hethen. I don’t disagree, Jeff can wipe about anybody off the stage, just totally different styles. Should be interesting and can’t wait to see some utube of it.

CR1ZZ | 1/20/2009, 5:09 pm EST

Sounds awesome. And I hav’nt bothered to read the RS top guitarist list yet because everyone said its shocking. I’m kinda new to the mag. Did they honestly put Kurt BEFORE clapton???

Brian May, (Queen) | 1/29/2009, 6:12 pm EST

Guess that doesn’t leave room for me, huh?

David McLeod | 2/12/2009, 10:00 pm EST

This shoould be a really good show. Both of these guitarists are very good.

im in japan NOW | 2/20/2009, 8:59 pm EST

i just saw eric on 2/18. he was really great. i was surprised at how intersting many of his improvisations were on the solos. solid, mood-changing stuff…im on my way to saitama today to catch the saturday show. this should be interesting.

Sam | 2/23/2009, 11:06 am EST

These guitar polls are purely subjective and near worthless beyond a measure of so-called “popularity”. While most agree on Hendrix’s enduring mythic status the rest is pretty well a matter of opinion. For instance, how many of you have heard the music of Jerry Miller, for instance? There are hundreds of great players out there, all of whom we can learn from. Guitar playing is an art, a journey. Picking “the best” from people at that level is more a matter of taste rather then skill (that is, apart from the near supernatural abilities of a soul like Mr. Hendrix – oneCAN make an exception in that case).

gouge | 3/1/2009, 2:13 am EST

Sam -you obviously have not seen or heard Jeff Beck play- if there is an heir to Hendrix -Beck in the last decade of complete and utter brilliance -with his unmatched, right hand -without a flatpick skill, his vast, complicated musicianship -really is taking the the relatively new instrument -ie the electric geetar into new realms expanding the technique and possibilities for how it can be played -what it can do -with very little electronic gimmickry….at the Eric Clapton Crossroads festival here in Chicago two summers ago -he with the brilliant young bassist Taj Wilkenfield wiped the staged with EVERYBODY -and there was a whole stadium of people who knew it- Jeff Beck is the best electric guitar play playing today -playing quite beyond what a twenty six year old Jimi Hendrix was capable of doing-

Hello to all ! Greetings From Poland. very Good Page !

Sammie D | 4/7/2009, 6:50 pm EST

There is no better then Jeff Beck. I’m 55 and playing guitar since I was 13 years old.Clapton and Page are good, but they are not better then Beck, he is the best.

seizedcarautos | 4/9/2009, 2:03 pm EST

Hello to all ! Great site. I am new here greetings to all from Poland.

Craig | 5/21/2009, 3:57 pm EST

I’m with the last guy..saw him 3 months ago in Sydney and he blew the roof off , amzing band and as a guitar player unique /brilliant. As good as anyone I’ve seen or heard. Very humble and hardly said a word other than the 2 nights were very special and thankyou. Just catching up with his recent work Have a listen to Room for the Papa from “Who Else” or the Ronnie Scott DVD if you cant see him live He and Clapton are having a ball playing basic blues The who’s best thing is idiotic… guitar players play because we love it. Its not a contest ..theres a million technically great guitarists but Jeff Beck is one who constantly reinvents himself and inspired /inspires countless name players as well as unknown millions.

Dash Riprock | 10/21/2009, 5:39 pm EST

Who was passing out the stupid pills at RS for this list. If there are any real musicians at RS they should have known that Beck is regarded as tops amongst his peers. God RS you are so freakin passe. Go away!
