News Ticker: Delaney Bramlett, Rihanna & Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance

12/29/08, 9:35 am EST

  • Songwriter Delaney Bramlett, who co-wrote songs like Eric Clapton’s “Let It Rain” and the Carpenters’ hit “Superstar,” died December 27th as a result of complications following gall bladder surgery. He was 69. Bramlett was also a leading member of Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, which at points featured artists like Clapton, Duane and Gregg Allman, George Harrison and Dave Mason, and is credited with teaching Harrison how to play slide guitar.
  • Rihanna, Fall Out Boy, Enrique Iglesias and Lifehouse will take part in the NFL’s Pepsi Smash Super Bowl Bash, a two-night event at Tampa, Florida’s Ford Amphitheatre on January 29th and 30th. Actor Jerry O’ Connell will host the event, which will air live on VH1 three days before the Super Bowl on February 1st.
  • My Chemical Romance have begun work on their follow-up to 2006’s Welcome to the Black Parade. According to bassist Mikey Way, the album’s sound is constantly changing: “So if, say, we wrote some songs that sound like Rick Springfield, a week later they’ve all turned into Children of Bodom songs,” Way said. As opposed to the band’s last three albums, the new disc likely won’t have a central concept.

Being a geezer who had the great pleasure to hear Delaney & Bonnie live on several occasions, and who began selling Rolling Stone in the dorms in 1969, it is appalling to me that Rolling Stone has all but ignored the death of one of the great figures of 60’s rock music. There was more flash around but no other white bands had the musical chops of D & B & Friends. That sound morphed into Joe Cocker then
Eric Clapton (who copped Delaney’s musical voice)and now Amy Winehouse. In an era where the music and musicians dont count, it is sad that a great American musician’s passing is given little comment in a publication that once was dedicated to rock music.

According to official BMI records, Delaney Bramlett co-wrote “Superstar”, “Let It Rain”, “Never Ending Song Of Love” with the other listed writers. Let there be no mistake. Just ck the records. Delaney Bramlett was one of the most prolific songwriters of the era and never stopped writing amazing material up until his death.

I agree with the above comments about Delaney Bramlett. Rolling Stone has degenerated into a just another celebrity magazine. Just one paragraph about Delaney? How sad!

Some fact-checking:

According to Bramlett’s own website, he co-wrote the song “Let It Rain,” however, “Due to contractual obligations he relinquished the writer credit to his then wife, Bonnie Bramlett enabling him to keep them in the family.” So yeah, you’re right but you’re wrong. Delaney co-wrote it. As for “Superstar,” the trio of Delaney, Bonnie and Leon Russell penned that, so “that information” in the post is correct. Thanks for checking in.

Sad to hear about Delaney. However, contrary to what the news items & obits say, he wasn’t the co-writer of “Superstar” & “Let It Rain”; the Bramlett who co-wrote those is Bonnie, his ex-wife. Doesn’t RS bother to fact-check? That information should be in YOUR OWN ARCHIVES!!!

I agree with Mr. Wolf. RS seems to ignore certain artists like Mr. Bramlett and Mr. Dave Mason, who has been completely ignored with his latest, 26 letters and 12 notes. Why these artists are so overlooked by RS mystifies me.

I agree with Mr Wolff and the fact is that as a quadruple threat singer, songwriter, musician and producer whom played with Hendrix, Harrison, Mason, Joplin to name a few, this guy means a lot to the music. This is Rolling Stone, right?

Michael Wolf | 12/30/2008, 12:26 am EST

Guys, thank you for mentioning the passing of Delaney Bramlett. However, it would been nice to devote more than a paragraph to him. Eric Clapton would not be the singer that he is without Delaney and his band was a training groun for a lot of great musicians such as Bobby Whitlock.
