John Lennon Appears Digitally In New “One Laptop Per Child” Ad

12/29/08, 11:50 am EST

With permission from his widow, Yoko Ono, a digital John Lennon stars in a new commercial for One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), a charity attempting to grant Internet access to children in developing countries. The clip features Lennon’s voice seemingly digitally sewn together. “Imagine if every child, no matter where in the world they were, could access a universe of knowledge,” the virtual Lennon says. “They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want. I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way.”

Multi-colored pixels bombard the screen until they form an image of Lennon, who speaks into the camera: “You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine, you can change the world.” Even 28 years after his death, the ad is still pretty haunting. This isn’t the first time a celebrity has been integrated digitally for commercial means: Fred Astaire danced with a vacuum cleaner during a Super Bowl ad, and Elvis Presley and Muppets mastermind Jim Henson have also posthumously appeared in commercials. OLPC was founded in 2005 by Nicholas Negroponte and hopes to provide children in poor countries with durable, solar-powered laptops that cost a mere $200. The program is one Ono obviously believes in, as she has been very hesitant to lend Lennon’s image to ads in the past.

Umm… couldn’t they have found a better voice? Wow. The shots at the end were nice…brilliant idea and charity. …but the voice… sounds like a two bit Lennon impersonator. I think that creeped me out the most.

better use of funds | 12/29/2008, 1:06 pm EST

hey, how bout we worry about feeding those kids and eradicating diseases in their homeland before we give them laptops?

apparently exposure to more Britney Spears and mtv.com is more important than eating.

Shogun | 12/29/2008, 1:53 pm EST

Fuck off! Do you think John really would have done that? What makes people think that they can speak for him?

And laptops of all things…I’m sure John would have been more concerned with spreading peace…not internet access

Liz | 12/29/2008, 2:55 pm EST

Really Yoko? Really? Someone needs to revoke her rights to say “this is what John would have wanted.” Because really…I don’t think she has any idea.

Bad concept, worse execution | 12/29/2008, 2:55 pm EST

If you’re going to dig up a beloved musical icon to push a product without his actual endorsement (even with the best of intentions, at least make the digital trickery believable and the voice authentic! Those e*Trade ads with the puking baby are more realistic than this!

stevefrehley | 12/29/2008, 3:07 pm EST

awful voice, why even bother…

rob | 12/29/2008, 3:48 pm EST

this is just disturbing. If it was a United Nations type plea for peace, I would have got it. But this is just a complete mess. Lennon for a lap-top? What the hell is Yoko thinking?

KPRIFM | 12/29/2008, 4:36 pm EST

Obviously, You people have NO IDEA what a great cause this is and how it is giving education opportunities to kids who would never have them! It wasn’t a great interpretation of John Lennon, but I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t agree with the cause. Why don’t you turn off your streaming music and listen to NPR once in awhile before bashing Yoko for trying to help disadvantaged kids.

John | 12/29/2008, 4:39 pm EST

Is the world ready for third world children to access universe of knowledge ?? I think not.

And this is not a bad thought.

If you were starving, and this laptop could bring you three squares a day, that is good.

But if you are starving, and they gave you a laptop, what would you eat ?

A couple hundred dollars goes along way to feed people who have nothing to eat.

And the laptops could get a lot more use in schools in the USA.

Think about this, before you send laptops, instead of food, to third world countries.

V_in_Chicago | 12/29/2008, 5:24 pm EST

Perfect timing as Yoko tours the world with John’s artwork. This is a shame. Feed the kids food before feeding them knowledge. How’s about a table top campaign first. And in this economy? Log onto reality, Yoko.

I really hate Yoko Ono. I really want to like her, but it’s hard. She keeps licensing and cashing in on John Lennon.

Musical Jenius | 12/29/2008, 6:25 pm EST

Nice idea, but yeah, i’m not sure how this is important in light of kids probably preferring food, medicine and vaccines. Also, last time I checked a good internet connection cost money too. Does each child get 30 days free or something with an option to subscribe?

Oddjob | 12/29/2008, 6:31 pm EST

doesn’t osund “digitally sewn together” to me… this sounds like an impersonator. Not a very convincing one either.

Yoko Brought Her Walrus | 12/29/2008, 6:50 pm EST

It’s amazing YOKO even keeps trying. She could never possibly do anything that people wouldn’t tear down.
How could a man who tried so hard to bring the world to a better understanding of itself, instead inspire this monumental pile of garbage? Yes, the people who continually post insults about his widow.
Why don’t you all just f-f-f–fade away.
These impoverished people are eating, they are mostly farmers, but the cycle of poverty persists because there are no opportunites for them to change. These computers present those possibilities.
Check it out before you condemn it. And I’m sure Yoko isn’t making a thin dime in the process.
Bastards!!!!

Positive cause, bad execution, imho >>> Can’t they find a very much living celebrity to convey the message??? Lennon paid his dues. He did what he could while he was with us, why can’t John Lennon RIP and/or be left alone to get on with his spiritual dimension if there is one??? Tacky. Disrespectful. I hope the charity will take the criticism as constructive, and put something else together to ask for support… Java Jive Jay

PS.: Another deceased celeb used in a tv ad was John Wayne in a beer commercial…

Ginny | 12/29/2008, 7:56 pm EST

How sad that Yoko would do this to John.

oorstevie | 12/29/2008, 9:15 pm EST

i remember when john and i used to hang out as we were preparing for the two virgins photo shoot. there we were, hanging ‘plumb’ to the ground with yoko looking like the ‘ace of spades’. i thought back then that this would look good as a screensaver on a laptop. now my dream has come true. or…has it? i wonder…mmm…mmm…

stylee75 | 12/29/2008, 9:28 pm EST

rolling round and round in his grave.

Who... | 12/29/2008, 10:45 pm EST

the hell do all you people think you are? I am not sure of anything of what John would think, since I didn’t know him, and neither did you. All I know is that he hated belittling fools and thrived for peace and equality. So letting his wife, his chosen partner, live out his dream they way she sees fit, is fine by me. It certainly isn’t like she has hung him out to everyone. She has made this icon as sacred as possible. So judge not, working class heros.

Who... | 12/29/2008, 10:53 pm EST

P.S. Last I checked it was Paul McCartney that let the Lennon/McCartney catalog be bought by his fabulous friend Micheal Jackson, so who is the foolish living legend that did the biggest dis-service to John and his art? I would have to “say, say, say” PAUL!

spencer | 12/30/2008, 2:38 am EST

o-no!

Martin | 12/30/2008, 9:13 am EST

No, Paul didn’t “let” Michael Jackson buy the Lennon/McCartney catalog. He did it behind his back after it had already been lost in bad business dealings. Ironically due to copywrite laws, due to John’s death a lot more of that catalog belongs to Ono than to McCartney. Julian Lennon has long been annoyed at the tacky cashing-in of Yoko, so I wonder how he feels about this.

brywool | 12/30/2008, 11:29 am EST

This is terrible. That is SO not John’s voice. Why don’t we just get some guy, dress him up as John, have him make records and go home at night to Sean and Yoko? It’ll be like he never left. Wouldn’t that be just lovely?
This is absolutely in poor taste. John may or may not’ve supported this (Yoko did, that’s what counts) but to have some CRAPPY imitation of his voice- What the Hell was she thinking? Yoko- PLEASE stop saying yes to this stuff. While you’re at it, stop with all the reissues of John’s songs, making his artwork into Ties and Coffee cups, etc. You’re making a mockery of him. Regarding the cause, that’s not the issue. The Cause might be great, but to try and pass this off as “John” is ridiculous. Rethink your approach for John’s sake.

Surf City Sounds Plus | 12/30/2008, 12:36 pm EST

Just one more thing. I registered my complaint about the Lennon ad to the laptop group. Bickering about it amongst ourselves isn’t enough for me…

getthedoggie | 12/30/2008, 12:42 pm EST

It’s a noble cause- hunger and a lack of education ensure millions of people will stay desperate and disadvantaged. The commercial is horrible though .. can they stop exploiting John? What’s next, ‘Happiness is a Warm Gun’ shilling for Viagra? This clip is actually from the Grey Whistle Test interview (’75)- he’s talking about someday visiting England again

El Freak | 12/30/2008, 2:13 pm EST

To all you people making comments about how the money would be better spent on providing food and wiping out disease, yes, that absolutely NEEDS to be done and there are plenty of amazing groups of people who are trying to do just that. But after you’ve fed them, then what? The only way to break the cycle of poverty is through education, which is what this program is trying to do. Otherwise you’re just keeping them barely above a subsistence level. Some of you act like it’s one thing or the other. It’s not. You can feed, clothe and educate these kids all at the same time.

A little weird- exploiting a dead man. Not really evil, just a bit creepy and unnecessary. How about using Yoko- who is alive- expressing the opinion? Makes more sense- more credible, too.

Anonymous | 12/31/2008, 4:10 am EST

wow, rolling over in his grave….
can we get people 4 walls, food, first, before starting in on corrupting their souls with the internet?

Jon G. | 12/31/2008, 1:44 pm EST

AbsoLUTEly an impersonator. There would have been no reason for John to have uttered the words “laptop” or digital” during his lifetime, and in listening to the audio, those particulkar words (if any) were not constructed by pasting syllables together.

pam | 12/31/2008, 4:50 pm EST

mrb | 1/1/2009, 3:42 am EST

creeped me out a little, but i dont think john would have minded the slightest bit about using his own myth to publicize a charitable organization

Fuck-OFF! | 1/2/2009, 5:52 am EST

I don`t even fucking care whether John Lennon has ever said the words “laptop” or “digital”. It`s not the point, and you people should drop the whole “impersonator” bullshit – IT DOESN`T MATTER! You`re missing the whole point you blundering fools!

Suckers!

unRest in digital pieces | 1/2/2009, 9:17 am EST

is this what’s to come, our dead hero’s images manipulated into advertising schemes, does Yoko own John lennon? Nobody should have the right to do that, to anybody.

basser | 1/2/2009, 1:50 pm EST

A musical hero (John). A worthy cause.

But this ad is tacky. It’s creepy that it’s digitally altered to make it appear Lennon says these words, and it’s creepy that that isn’t Lennon’s voice. Yoko herself should have done the commerical, holding a large photo of her and John. That would have been better (and more tasteful and, in the long run, more memorable)

wjdavies | 1/2/2009, 6:43 pm EST

I agree that it IS a tacky ad. It would have been better to have Yoko doing it and mentioning John sometime during the ad. But to you people that say he should have shot Yoko instead, I remember the night he died, people in the bar where we were watching the football game when the news broke started shouting out the exact same shit. I hated it then and I hate it now. Yoko was his loving wife, I have always admired her. She has the right to do as she pleases, if sometimes the ideas go bad, its nobodies business but Yoko’s. Peace and love to the Lennon’s!

Horrible and tasteless commercial. I heard the voice, walked over to the TV and stood in disbelief.

And it’s not about whether John would have done that, it’s that he didn’t.

BTW, I read an article on BBC that said a vast majority of these third world youngsters were accessing pornography on these computers. Great cause.

mitchperkins | 1/4/2009, 1:58 pm EST

I love Yoko Ono. And John Lennon was a profound influence on my life. I believe Yoko has done an incredible job with Lennon’s legacy, and I think she is a brilliant artist. That said, THIS ad for laptops is too much. This is ill conceived and borders on tacky. The voice track is ill conceived, actually its pretty terrible. I am sure John and Yoko had their artistic differences. I have a feeling John would have found this enterprise appalling at best. Thanks Yoko – pull the ad.

Reality Check | 1/4/2009, 2:53 pm EST

Can someone tell me what Internet access to developing children in “third-world” countries will bring?

John | 1/5/2009, 4:21 am EST

I for one think Lennon would have been a big supporter of any tech that would help open the minds of children anywhere, But John Lennon didn’t chose me to speak on his behalf he chose Yoko. So if he chose Yoko to speak for him who am I to say he picked the wrong person to do so.
And yes I agree more money is needed to help feed starving people all over the world, but before you start deciding how someone else should spend their money to help people, ask yourself “How much money did I give to feeding the worlds hungry”. Enough money to be able to decide how much money others should give to a cause or what cause or what kind of help to give.
Personally I thought the voice needed alot of work, it just didnt sound right. But I thought it was a touching commercial and I think Lennon would have approved.

Alex | 1/5/2009, 8:05 am EST

I dont’t care about the ad. In my country, the OLPC program is called Plan Ceibal and it works! Not all children in third world are starving, but if they still were, we´re contributing with a better future for them trough digital literacy.

Yes, it’s a good cause, but creating a collage of someone’s entire image and persona to make yuppies spend money is an issue of personal creative license and the power of the estate. The Fred Astaire/ vacuum clip is nauseating. But Lennon’s voice must be impersonated; there’s no way that kind of clarity could be reconstructed from any recordings that were created prior to his death. Perhaps Yoko just wanted to do something for a good cause, but please, leave John out of it.
