Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Jennifer Hudson Set to Honor Neil Diamond at MusiCares Gala

12/29/08, 3:55 pm EST

If you’ve ever wanted to see Dave Grohl rock for Neil Diamond, your moment has arrived. Diamond, 2008’s MusiCares Person of the Year, will be honored at a ceremony featuring performances by the Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Jennifer Hudson and the honoree himself. The gala will take place Friday, February 6th — two days before the Grammys — at Los Angeles’ Convention Center. Proceeds from the event will benefit the MusiCares program, which ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need.

Over the years, Diamond’s charitable contributions have been well-documented, and recently the singer donated to efforts like hurricane relief in the wake of Texas’ Hurricane Ike. Diamond joins past honorees including Brian Wilson, Bono, Paul Simon, Sting, Aretha Franklin and many more over the award’s 19-year history. In addition to the all-star concert lineup, the night will also feature a silent auction, with many “one-of-a-kind celebrity memorabilia” available during an online auction. Additional performers for the night include Adele, Tim McGraw, Josh Groban and Raul Malo. Performers for the 51st annual Grammys Awards have not yet been announced, but it’s a safe bet that some of the artists performing at the MusiCares ceremony will double up and play the actual awards show as well.

It is interesting that Neil Diamond is hooking up with something that has ignored him for the last 50 years (the grammy awards).Look at this year-zero nominations for his critically praised #1 new album. While every other performer on the face of the earth is nominated for something, from Barry Manilow to my dog .

Skip, you hit the nail on the head, just look at the artists in The Rock&Roll Hall Of Fame. The Moody Blues, The Hollies and Neil Diamond and other greats are not in The Hall. But Bob Dylan is, and just look at the 09 selection. It is a slap in the face that Neil has not been selected years ago.

what did your dog get nominated for???

Neil won a Grammy Award for Jonathan Livingston Seagull and was nominated for that abysmal Movie Album thing he put out in the late 90’s. But HBD gets overlooked? Shows the stuffed shirts that nominate artists for The Grammy’s, have no clue what real talent or music is.

Best non-verbal performance by a non-human for ‘Songs in the key of Bark’.

i think neil diamond sucks and hasn’t contributed anything revolutionary to music.

As an old woman I grew up listening to Neil Diamond. Mr. Diamond is a performer that my father introduced me to, I only wish my dad would be here to see this day. He is long overdue for recognition, a fact that I am sure most young people are unaware of…, for you younger kids, you might remember, Pulp Fiction’s “Girl, you’ll be a Woman Soon” and “Red, Red Wine”…. either way I am elated that Neil Diamond is being recognized.

I think it’s sad that some individuals have to put someone down just because they do not understand their music. Neil Diamond can put feelings into words that many of us can not express. I am proud to be a long time fan and would like to thank him for all his beautiful music!

Song writing, live performance, even the hardest rockers can feel his intensity. His influence is everywhere. Back off non-believers!

It is way condescending of you to say that that person does not “understand” diamond’s music. Music is not an understand thing, you don’t like music because you understand it, that sure helps, but i wouldn’t dig so deep as to say that neil diamond’s music is so good and full of depth to say that someone wouldn’t understand it. in my opinion, it is surface level music, with very little depth. no offense, please continue to like his music, just don’t make outrageous condescending claims of the lack of soulful depths of other people.

I think being in the business for over 40 years & still having number one albums, selling out arenas and stadiums all over the world speaks for itself. Even if he isn’t your cup of tea, that’s something that should be recognized and respected.

Yes, aws a fan for nearly 30 years, (Jazz Singer was the album everyone had at college), and having enjoyed exploring all his music from the mid-60s to today, I agree Neil Diamond has been long-overdue a bit of true critical acclaim, but I’m not really worried. He has kept working all through the decades, pleasing his audiences and exploring musical styles, as indeed many artists do, if they are able to survive long enough. Let’s hope the third in the Rick Rubin-produced trilogy might garner him a bigger award, perhaps even just the “I gave my life to music” award, which doesn’t exist but should. Diamond’s always been easy to criticise, and, indeed, has never seemed to be ‘hip’, yet is about as uncontroversial as they come – a regular nice human who cares, shares, loves and still feels – the philospohy of his music that he is still true to today. Here in the UK, hip young bands namecheck him, hip young things dance at his concerts, and I recognise how his songs are almost a soundtrack to my life… Largely ignored by gong givers, almost an ‘underground’ treasure, Neil Diamond perhaps proves it’s perhaps hipper to be unhip!

Wow! What a singer! What a songwriter! What a voice! I have adored Neil Diamond for years. He is the best singer, songwriter in the business. He is just an amazing man. His songs are beautiful and you can understand the words, and of course the music is the best.

Go Neil! You should be winning a Grammy this year. This is your year. You should have been chosen. You should be in the Rock and Roll Rock of Shame.

I try to see Neil Diamond every time he’s on tour. I have all his CD’s except one. I wish I could see the award tonight, but I can’t find it listed.

A living legend! I’m a rock ‘n roll guy at heart and I have seen many concerts in my time, and have been lucky to see most of the big names, but seeing Mr. Diamond live soars above the rest. The ultimate performer!

TIMBO | 2/24/2009, 12:22 am EST
