Count Five Singer John Byrne Dead at 61, Penned “Psychotic Reaction”

12/29/08, 1:45 pm EST

John Byrne, the lead singer of garage-rock band Count Five and the writer of their 1966 hit “Psychotic Reaction,” died on December 15th following kidney and liver failure in San Jose, California. He was 61. Inspired by the Yardbirds’ “I’m a Man,” “Psychotic Reaction” peaked at Number 5 on the Billboard charts and became a radio staple during the Vietnam War era. “Psychotic Reaction” was also listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll.

The song proved to be the band’s biggest hit, as the band broke up in 1969 so its members could pursue college educations. “Psychotic” lived on as a live staple for bands like Television, the Cramps and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, who included a cover version on their Playback box set. Byrne went on to become an accountant but never stopped playing music, even forming the Count with some former Count Five bandmates in 2002. The Count Five reunited for one night only in 1987, and were among the first inductees into the San Jose Rock Hall of Fame in 2006.

John “Sean” Byrne was my friend and he will truly be missed by his wife Dagmar (married since 1970), his children, grand-children, band mates, friends and fans. Music was the heart of John. Although John suffered for years from poor health, he continued to perform, when he felt up to it with Count Five, JJ TRA, The Count and many other bands off and on through the years. Count Five continues to perform and they will keep John’s words alive. My heart goes out to Roy, Johnny “Mouse”, Kenn, Rocco and Phil (Count Five now) I know you each loved John and will miss him. John used to tell me “Love, I wake up each morning composing in my mind; When I go to sleep at night it’s complete”. He had this uncanny ability to compose a song at the drop of a hat. He was a remarkable man and was a very cool dude, indeed! His life was full of hope and dreams and he lived it through his music. I am honored to be a band mate of his in Roy Chaney’s band The Count. He was a complicated spirit and we worked great together. He payed it forward with me by sharing all of his wisdom of words, melody and how to focus on finding that right hook for a song. I will miss his soulful open way of singing his feelings out into the microphone during rehersals. He inspired more people than he ever knew but, he will live on through his music and that is VERY cool! Thanks, John…for being such a wonderful influence in my life.

Does anybody know how to reach Tina, John’s daughter ? Does she have an email ? We would like to help her and her mother. But it should be much easier to get help through the Internet if Tina could create a Paypal account. We’re a lot of Count V fans all around the world. If a part of us all would give only one or five dollars, it sureley could help them.

Here is Tina’s message :

My name is Tina Byrne. I am the daughter of John ‘Sean’ Byrne lead
singer and song writer for the band Count V (hit song ”Psychotic
Reaction). On December 15, 2008 my father passed away after being in
the hospital for over a month. He was the young age of 61. In his
passing he left a pretty big pile of hospital bills, funeral costs, a
huge mortgage, and not to mention the other everyday bills we all get
each month. My dad had no life insurance and was disabled for the
last 6 years of his life and needed 24 hour care (which my mom Dagmar
provided until the end). So both of my parents were unable to work
and the only income they had was my dad’s monthly disability checks
(which didn’t cover all the bills). In March of 2007 my parents were
on the verge of foreclosure and needed money to keep their home of 33
years so my dad, having nothing of any real value (except the rights
to his music), had to sell ALL rights to his songs
(including ‘Psychotic Reaction’) to have enough money to stay in
their home. So my mom doesn’t even get those royalty checks anymore.
Needless to say she is not only mourning the loss of he husband of 35
years and best friend she is also overwhelmed financially with bills
she can’t pay. Her mortgage is due and she has $40 in the bank. So I
am trying to help her raise money to help her in her time of sorrow
and loss. Just enough to get her back on her feet and help out until
she can secure a job to pay her bills. I started The John Byrne
Memorial Fund to try to raise a few bucks but no one sent anything.
So on February 21, 2009 with the help of Dan Orloft (co-founder San
Jose Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame) and Mark Fenichel (clear channel
radio stations KFOX) I am having a benefit concert in my father’s
name to further help with money issues my family is facing. The show
is at 777 Lawrence Expressway in Santa Clara, California. Doors will
open at 7:00pm and tickets will be $25 each. We will be hosting a
silent auction that night and we are trying to get some donations of
memorabilia to be auctioned and also any musical instruments (guitar
to be signed by all bands performing and raffled off) would be
greatly appreciated. I am also in need of endorsements and/or
sponsors for the concert. Basically any help you can give. If you can
in anyway help please contact me any time. My family and I thank you
for taking the time out of your busy schedule to help us in our time
of need. You will be helping not only remember one of the most
influential artists ever but a family who could really use a helping
hand. Thank you again and I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Tina Byrne

u cannot imagine the effects of such a man and song on all aspects of so many lives. as a musician and surfer and person in this world, that song drives me to joy – as it does for so many

John Sean Byrne. R.I.P. The Count Five had more potential than household name bands like The Rolling Stones and The Who. I will always hold on to my Psychotic Reaction LP in mono, as well as my Teeny Bopper/You Must Believe me 45…rocks harder and better than any band coming to this lame music scene today. Thank you for it all…
