Beastie Boys To Reissue “Paul’s Boutique” With Original Artwork, Song Commentaries

12/29/08, 12:55 pm EST

It’s too late to make David Fricke’s top reissues of 2008, but next year’s list has an early contender: Beastie Boys will reissue their epic Paul’s Boutique on January 27th to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary. The classic LP has been digitally remastered for the first time, with all three Beasties overseeing the 24-bit process. The album’s original vinyl artwork will be restored in an eco-friendly, eight-panel digipak displaying a panoramic view of the intersection at Rivington and Ludlow in New York City’s Lower East Side. A foldout poster will also be included in the package, plus the reissue gives fans access to a free download of a “track-by-track” album commentary, with Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA talking about the songs while the track plays in the background, much like Director’s Commentaries on DVDs.

Despite a four-star Rolling Stone review, Paul’s Boutique was deemed a critical failure upon its release in 1989. But the Beastie Boys’ second album (and follow-up to the massively successful License to Ill) has gone on to become a cult classic and is recognized as one of the greatest rap albums of all time. With sample-heavy production courtesy of the Dust Brothers — who would go on to produce Beck’s Odelay — the post-modern lyrics on the album would touch on everything from Steve McQueen to The Empire Strikes Back to Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas, and that’s just in the song “High Plains Drifter,” itself a reference to a Clint Eastwood film.

As for the Beastie Boys in 2009, the trio is reportedly working a new album that is expected out in May. The band last released their instrumental The Mix-Up in 2007.

Great album, but would love to see a remastered License to Ill with a few extra tracks, namely the one from the movie “Pump up the volume”

A remastered License to Ill Will probably never happen. The band pretty much disavows that album.

they can disavow it all they want, but they would not have a career if they did not make that album. So they should bend down and pray to God they did everyday. Was it overplayed, absolutely.

I’ve seen the Beasties still incorporate some of the “License” songs as recent as last tour, though what I’ve seen them do is, in the case of “Paul Revere”, turn it over to the audience to do on their own. “Time to Get Ill” was another one dusted off the shelves in the 90’s and was truly one of their better live tracks even to this day…
Have a feeling they know that album helped put them on the map, but I can’t say that I see people showing up to their concerts waiting to only hear “Fight for Your Right”.

you know people throw around the words “sgt. pepper” around loosely but “pauls Boutique” is more than that. It is a masterpiece. ( so isn’t Sgt Pepper).

Best. Hip Hop. Album. EVER.
Bring back sampling. The fools nowadays spend enough $ on bling, spend that money on samples instead.

I’m not sure what “Anonymous” is talking about by saying they “disavow” Licensed To Ill. The last show of theirs I went to (last year) they played 5 out of the 13 tracks that is on that album. Not bad for a catalogue that is 7 LP’s deep. The remaster for that record might be a while because of them still being signed to Capital… and the shit storm it took for them to get away from Russell Simmons and Def Jam.

AS hip hop gets lamer, this record stands out as what could have been. It’s fun, it takes risks, it is arty, the songs have hooks, it has an overall vibe and works as an album… when is the last time you could say that about a rap record (sorry I meant hip-hop…hate that term)

The only thing they | 12/31/2008, 5:01 pm EST

disavowed was their party persona circa Licensed. Pauls’ Boutique is quite simply a great album, hip hop or otherwise.

Back in the day n’ 1990 when I was in the U.S. Army, me and barracks boyz would drop science with some “3 Minute Rule” schooling all those not in the know. That shiznit was the bomb back then and Paul’s Boutique is a classic only the truly blessed know of.
