MTV Orders More Reality Shows, Avoids Music

MTV has heard your calls to put the Music back into Music Television, and it now has your answer: 16 new reality shows that have nothing to do with music. With the death of TRL, FNMTV remains the last vestige of original music programming on the station. The new crop of non-music shows shifts into a category MTV lovingly calls “aspirational, enterprising and empowering.” For instance: a student-shot series filmed at the University of Wisconsin called College Life, a daredevil program called Nitro Circus, the Donald Trump-produced Charm School-esque Girls of Hedsor Hall and a show about the founders of Collegehumor.com, ingeniously titled The College Humor Show.

“These new series reflect Generation ‘Why Not?’ — living, working and playing on their own terms, ‘adventure capitalists’ if you will, pursuing a variety of thrill-seeking, 2.0, express-yourself enterprises,” says MTV entertainment president Brian Graden. Everyone from Justin Timberlake to Kanye West have made public pleas for MTV to return to their music video ways, but the recent schedule announcements show those cries have landed on deaf ears. Should MTV even be allowed to put on the Video Music Awards anymore? It seems kind of superfluous, like if ESPN handed out Academy Awards.

Of the new reality shows announced, only Daddy’s Girls has anything to do with music, and that’s only because it stars the daughters of Run-DMC’s Reverend Run. Thankfully, MTV has outsourced all its music videos to their video site MTV Music, but that doesn’t mean we forgive them for making the world suffer through the upcoming Bromance.

This coming from a magazine that hardly covers music any more.

Matt | 12/23/2008, 5:10 pm EST

Wait.. REALLY? Rolling Stone has always covered a variety of things but how can you say they don’t cover music?

Oh. and MTV has sucked for quite some time, I’m not at all surprised by this.

Schultz | 12/23/2008, 5:29 pm EST

To answer the question, I think it would be hypocritical of MTV to hand out “music” awards any more – being so out of touch with the scene.

They can just hand out the People-behaving-badly-on-tv-fo r-the-world-to-see-at no-matter-how-douchebaggery-I- look-to-get-my-own-show award

Bastards

obvious | 12/23/2008, 5:42 pm EST

So MTV should go away all together? Because if they increase music programming, that’s what’ll happen. Why broadcast full songs when kids just want bytes (a la The Hills), and is there that much out there in terms of full songs that appeals to an audience as broad as The Hills? I’m not defending the vapid wasteland that is currently MTV, but they’re just trying to stay alive with ad dollars just like every other network. The reality programs bring in the dough better than any broadcast of whole Top 40 songs or today’s sparkle’n'fade up-and-coming artists.

BOB | 12/23/2008, 5:52 pm EST

they could at least show videos on mtv2. mtv2 kicked ass in the mid 90’s

Travis | 12/23/2008, 8:14 pm EST

Rolling Stone:
remember that saying “ye who is without sin cast the first stone”?

Maybe you should sop with the political non sense and get back to the music

But.... | 12/23/2008, 8:27 pm EST

RS supported eagerly, MTV’s not covering music when it had its reality show on there last year. Don’t act like you didn’t add to MTV’s reality fest. It hasn’t been a music channel for years, even TRL was a joke….and they cut that off too.

Hannah | 12/24/2008, 7:31 am EST

Rolling Stone is still mostly music…
and I don’t think it has ever been 100% just about music, I’m pretty sure they were political from the beginning.
Look at the cover gallery. In the 70’s there are plenty of political covers
MTV on the other hand used to be music, and is now all reality shows

Jere | 12/24/2008, 8:54 am EST

As much as I think Rolling Stone is the guy in your group of friends who says “Oh, yeah, I like that band too!” then buys all their albums/DVDs/swag to prove it when they’ve never even heard of the band, you can’t accuse them of not covering music. They do other things, but they certainly cover music.

If MTV were to go back to broadcasting videos, they’d have to come up with an interesting way to present them. I don’t even know if it’s possible in the age of YouTube. I don’t really support the reality show trash that they’re feeding the public, but do they have a choice from a business/ratings standpoint?

Hannah | 12/24/2008, 10:06 am EST

Germany’s MTV has music videos and music shows in addition to the stupid American reality shows.

Including Flavor of Love, exactly the representation of America that we want to project to the rest of the world, rite?

ShingoEX | 12/24/2008, 12:19 pm EST

1 7-letter word describes MTV

GARBAGE

I used to love you, MTV…what the hell happened? Why have you forsaken me and everyone else?

Homer | 12/24/2008, 12:41 pm EST

MTV sucks. They should just rename it to RTV, reality television.

mr mtv fan | 12/24/2008, 12:50 pm EST

what kind of show is BROMANCE and ofcourse this new show coming called THE CITY…

MTV needs shows like Boiling Point…
not the Hills, not bromance and definately not the City.

Joe | 12/24/2008, 12:57 pm EST

What happened to The Tube?

Lalo | 12/24/2008, 1:03 pm EST

It’s not only in th US, here in Mexico is happening the same, is all about the realities. Ih hate that.

Anonymous | 12/24/2008, 1:05 pm EST

It’s funny seeing all these MTV employees trying to save face for shows that only teeny boppers watch.

Bring back the music, and the good music at that…They stopped playing music around the time they decided to air nothing but backstreet boys and brittany spears.

Greg | 12/24/2008, 1:19 pm EST

Maybe I’m too young, but I don’t ever recall MTV playing music videos. If you want music videos, FUSE tv is the way to go, in my opinion.

Justin B | 12/24/2008, 1:30 pm EST

GODDAMN IT! THE CASH COW IS DEAD! Reality shows are garbage. Stop milking the teet of Elimination Shows the concept is no good anymore! Instead of MILK ITS ALL PUS!!!!!

Stop PLEASE!

STEVE | 12/24/2008, 1:48 pm EST

F MTV

MORE TRASH VISION

Mark0 | 12/24/2008, 1:56 pm EST

….just watch one of the numerous constant music channels your satellite/ cable provder gives you and stop all your complaining…mtv has at least three themselves and there are more…

Deb | 12/24/2008, 3:49 pm EST

I was very young when MTV started. I got to see the first video and I was hooked. But if video killed the radio star. What’s going to kill Reality TV…
Apathy?

Steve | 12/24/2008, 5:16 pm EST

I think Mtv stopped showing videos sometime in 1995. I had to switch to Mtv 2.

jennifer | 12/24/2008, 5:20 pm EST

i remember watching mtv in 1990 and then some. i was only 6 then but i loved the music. too bad they don’t seem to get the name Music TeleVision. They need to change that name.

Guest | 12/24/2008, 5:22 pm EST

4 months huh? Well ok but after these reality shows are done in April can we please, please go back to the music the way it used to be after that.

wtfRyan | 12/24/2008, 5:45 pm EST

MTV sucks, everyone knows it. BRING ROCK ‘N’ ROLL BACK to music television..please?

Lori | 12/24/2008, 5:47 pm EST

I used to love watching MTV. I watched shows like Remote Control, Headbanger’s Ball and 120 minutes. They actually played music in the late 80’s early 90’s. Then the horrible reality show explosion came along. Oh, and let us not forget “scripted reality”. The terribly shallow and awefully acted shows like The Hills and their Barbie and Ken lookalike attention whores. It’s a travesty that they are still called MTV(music television). They should be the reality channel, or bad teenage drama network, something like that…death to MTV!!!

Moe | 12/24/2008, 6:40 pm EST

blame jenny mc carthy and that stupid dating show she had on there years ago

Jim McCabe | 12/24/2008, 7:09 pm EST

MTV has sucked for about 15 years. You’re now just PO’d?

Joe | 12/24/2008, 8:05 pm EST

At one time, MTV was the only source for music videos. But now because of the internet, they’ve had to diversify.

They have simply provided (cheap) programming content to their target audience: teenage girls.

There is obviously more money to be made by showing these shows than music videos. It’ll be interesting to see if FUSE TV can exploit this.

Steve | 12/24/2008, 8:47 pm EST

It’s a shame what has happened. If you look past all the generic rap and metal music videos, there is a lot of great stuff still being churned out. A lot of the videos I see these days are still pushing the envelope as far as film technique and I’d much rather see them on TV than on a little compressed youtube video.

I'm2Old | 12/24/2008, 9:07 pm EST

I remember back when it all started. VJ’s playing music all the time. It was a beautiful thing boys and girls. Bring back Mighty Martha Quinn and the moon man and play some damn music!

Anonymous | 12/24/2008, 9:07 pm EST

” — living, working and playing on their own terms, ‘adventure capitalists’ if you will, pursuing a variety of thrill-seeking, 2.0, express-yourself enterprises,”

Really?! How many more buzzwords about this generation can he throw out that say virtually nothing!? So basically, what he meant to say is that MTV is putting on more worthless stuff so it can sell even more ad space directed at some horribly vague audience demographic.

Even though advertising to youth has always been a foundation of MTV’s business model, at least they used to put some thought into their programming. Now, it seems anyone who can write “reality” show script can get on MTV, so long as they promise to ensure the actors just happen to wear designer clothes and drink only one type of beverage.

Vicki | 12/24/2008, 9:10 pm EST

I remember when I first got MTV2 a few years ago, I loved it because it played a whole lot more music videos than regular MTV. But now, even MTV2 has turned into mostly reruns of reality shows. :(

She Epy | 12/24/2008, 11:01 pm EST

Big LOL @ Michael who said “This coming from a magazine that hardly covers music any more”

Baker | 12/24/2008, 11:23 pm EST

That’s why Pitchfork.tv was invented.

Curmudgeon | 12/25/2008, 8:54 pm EST

It’s kinda like a music magazine that’s all ads and politics.

TruTH | 12/26/2008, 1:30 am EST

Reality TV…..Brainwash garbage…

celebrity sadist | 12/26/2008, 6:36 am EST

I already have an idea for a reality show: It would be nice to see my favorite stars on MTV´s newest ultimate show called “Celebrities Cook For MTV”! Of course this should be a live broadcast, in which celebrities receive a rating that can be between zero and five stars!

mynameisearl | 12/26/2008, 12:05 pm EST

the folks who are mismanaging this company have no idea what they are doing.
truly, Empty-V.

OUR MTV game | 12/27/2008, 2:55 am EST

This is something you can all do. All you need is cable and a remote cause getting up to change the tv is for old people. Shot glasses and a lot of booze because you shouldnt be sober and watching this crap

turn on MTV, Ok now the first one who can name a actualy musician that is on the screen gets to tell another friend to drink.

If a person is able to call the lineup for the next ring tone commercial they get to make everyone take a shot.

If you call who isnt the one to get Nexted on NEXT you get to make a friend take a shot.

If mtv plays anykind of music with the music video included you have to chug a beer until the video is over(dont worry is never lasts longer the 10 seconds)

The first person to call who will have a phone to phone conversation on the hills gets to hand out a shot……..

Well ya get the point. Basically if you want any enjoyment out of mtv then just create a game.

If you are watching mtv because you enjoy its program then dont worry your period and boobs will come soon enough

mtv? | 12/27/2008, 5:15 am EST

now they can change the name of program vtv(video tv)….what the fuck???

wow | 12/28/2008, 7:22 pm EST

wow! wtf’s happening to mtv? whats wrong with people? its because of those people who likes to watch reality shows that makes mtv gain more confidence to create garbage shows.

thedetoxg | 12/29/2008, 7:45 am EST

mtv and vh1 are a joke. u cant watch these these stations and tactually thnk there music channels..i remember behind the music.. not the hills were its staged “real life” situations or flavor flav picking ugly hoes to marry for a month. we need a channel that brings you music news, videos, bios, concerts. isnt it called MUSIC TELVISION :

i dont want my MTV

Den | 12/29/2008, 5:55 pm EST

WE WANT VIDEOS, air the reality shows on another channel

Chloe | 12/30/2008, 6:57 pm EST

I don’t really agree with music vidoes, because I don’t think visuals should define the meaning of a song, but that’s another story. MTV used to be so awesome because all they played was music (vidoes).
Now all they play is shows based on Laguna Beach. I’m sick of it! They say that my generation wants this? Most people my age want MTV to cut at least half of the crap shows and put some good old countdowns on the air-and please exclude some Rihanna-type stuff. They never play music. It should be FRSTV, for fake reality show television or something.

Chloe | 12/30/2008, 6:57 pm EST

MTV stands for Music Television why not just change it to RTV meaning Retarted Television

deets | 1/1/2009, 5:49 pm EST

i wanna music back!

CB | 1/2/2009, 12:38 pm EST

I like how Moe says blame the Jenny McCarthy show…how about blaming the first “REAL” reality show, The Real World. That started this whole thing! The other networks should be writing checks to MTV for making reality tv into what it is.

That being said, we still live in a capitalist country where demand eventually garners supply so if we all want music back on the teley, someone pony up some cake and make it happen! You’ll be a hero and your pockets will get stuffed full of greenbacks.

Adam | 1/7/2009, 4:12 pm EST

Two A Days.(Stupid)
The Hills(OC Girls Can EF Off)
Bromance(Really really crappy)
The Real World(Washed up, 19 seasons is too much)
Real World Road Rules(Just as bad as the previous)
Punk’d(Ashton does better Nykon CommericalS!)
Pimp My Ride(Xzibit you suck)

Only thing on MTV that I enjoy is reruns of Jackass and when they took over MTV. The Jackass crew even play music that was hilarious! And all in all the takeover was LAME but thats more MTV than I have watched in years. Screw MTV. I choose youtube over MTV for any video! I hope they go bankrupt!

Boooo MTV You Suck Nads.

Bunny | 1/30/2009, 12:43 pm EST

My Grandson asked for my support in getting MTV back to music videos…is there a site for this?? He is an angel!

steve adams | 2/7/2009, 6:03 pm EST

john reilly | 7/20/2009, 11:12 am EST

In ireland mtv europe was the channe.l best music, shows, vj’s and overall programming , then in 97 mtv uk complete crap. I have tracked down mtv europe now but its not like it used to be. nottin but teen crap no vj’s same repeat videos. if mtv want reality they should set up a channel for that and leave our mtv the way which made it what it is today.

eydie | 7/26/2009, 9:40 pm EST

i remember mtv in it’s glory days, with adam curry, martha quinn, kurt loder. the music was wonderful and then about the mid 90’s, it all ground to a screeching halt. rap nonsense and so called reality crap took over and i for one am ANGRY!
